Dear Professor, We are pleased to present the Spring 2020 Academic Catalog featuring Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective releases from September 2019 through April 2020 as well as key titles from the recent past that still need to be kept in mind. As always, our goal is to • publish across the broad spectrum of biblical, theological, and ministry-related disciplines; • publish works that stay abreast of current scholarship, written by the emerging generation of scholars as well as seasoned, proven scholars; and • publish works that model irenic discussion and represent a variety of viewpoints, and yet stay within the boundaries of our commitments to the historic doctrines of orthodox Christianity and biblical authority. We have three new members on the Zondervan Academic team—Amy Bigler, Senior Manager of Public Relations; Matthew Miller, Marketing Manager; and Emily Voss, Senior Marketing Associate. All three bring a wealth of experience and expertise and to their new roles, and we are so glad to have them working alongside the rest of the team. We recently launched MasterLectures, a Netflix-style subscription to thousands of video lectures from Zondervan Academic authors. Your students will get unlimited access to all the lectures for a low monthly rate. No matter what you are teaching, you will be able to find high quality video material to supplement the readings you assign in your courses. See page 28 for more information. Late last spring we launched a new and improved version of our ZondervanAcademic.com website. It is now more user-friendly than ever. The website still includes all the TextbookPlus+ teaching resources that aid in your course preparation, but now you can buy Zondervan Academic products as well. We offer discounts on hundreds of products and free shipping on orders over $25.

Guide Your Students to Understand Each Gospel’s Unique Portrait of Jesus
A Survey of Jesus and the Gospels Mark L. Strauss $59.99 | $35.99 Hardcover - 608 pages ISBN 9780310528678
We know it’s not easy. “Extraordinarily well written and thoughtfully organized. This book will be useful to anyone in need of a concise, clear, and knowledgeable guide through the four Gospels.” —FRANK THIELMAN, Beeson Divinity School The second edition of Four Portraits, One Jesus has been updated throughout to meet the needs of today’s students. It is a thorough yet accessible introduction to the four biblical Gospels and their subject: the life and person of Jesus. Like different artists rendering the same subject using different styles and points of view, the Gospels paint four highly distinctive portraits of the same remarkable Jesus.

He is the author of several books including Mark in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament, Luke in the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Background Commentary series, and Introducing Jesus.
These factors are not mutually exclusive, of course, and various needs and concerns may have motivated each gospel writer. I will discuss various proposals made by scholars as we examine the purpose and theme of each gospel in part 3.
T HE G OSPEL AUDIENCES: TO W HOM W ERE THE G OSPELS W RITTEN? There is almost universal agreement that the Gospels were written primarily to believers rather than to unbelievers. But who were the specific audiences? None of the Gospels identify their recipients except Luke, who addresses his work to a certain Theophilus (1:3). Yet even Theophilus is probably the patron who sponsored Luke’s gospel, rather than the primary or exclusive recipient. Luke surely expected his work to be read by others.

Joseph was a tektōn (Mark 6:3), which really refers to a “builder” who works in wood, metal, or stone. Such multiskilled workers were needed for construction, particularly for cutting stone, which made up almost all construction in Galilee. Jesus’s crown of thorns may have come from a palm. The fronds were trimmed away on one side and the longer fronds stood upright creating a halo of palms radiating like the sun. This imitated the god Helios (the sun god) and was used widely by Roman rulers. Jesus was thus mocked with an imitation royal crown whose palms were not trimmed, leaving sharp thorns. Jesus then left the city and entered an olive orchard not far from the road that would take him back to Bethany. Here he prayed fervently and was burdened by the dread of his coming suffering (Mark 14:32 – 42). The evening was interrupted when Judas, who had received thirty silver pieces (Matt. 26:14 – 16), led a determined band of men to arrest Jesus. Priests, temple police (Luke 22:52), and even a detachment of Roman soldiers (John 18:3, 12) arrived with weapons and torches. With the signal of a kiss, Judas identified Jesus, and he was arrested. Jesus’s trial was quickly carried out since the authorities feared a furious reaction from the masses, many of whom came from Galilee (Luke 22:2). The high priest Caiaphas gathered a cadre of leaders at his residence, and his father-in-law, the now-retired high priest Annas, began the interrogation (John 18:13). This was followed by witnesses who made unsuccessful charges against Jesus (Matt. 26:60). Because the witnesses contradicted themselves about details (Mark 14:56), Caiaphas himself entered the fray. He first prodded Jesus to speak in his own self-defense, hoping to find some incriminating evidence on his own lips. Finally, he asked him forthrightly: “Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God” (Matt. 26:63). It was considered blasphemy to claim divine honors for oneself. Jesus answered by describing himself as an apocalyptic judge who would possess a heavenly role with God (Mark 14:62). This was enough. After calling for a test vote, Caiaphas handed Jesus over to the temple police to be guarded until morning. For each gospel writer, the scene is tragic. Jesus was alone, and even his leading disciple, Peter, who had followed and stood outside the priest’s house and

Ritual Washing and the Baptism of John Ritual washing was common among both the Jews and the gentiles. Initiates into the mysteries of the Egyptian deity Isis underwent a form of baptism. Helping students understand the world of the New Testament can be complex, not only because major thinkers and schools of thought are so diverse, but also because students may lack the understanding of the land, history, and culture in which the story of the New Testament takes place.
Get more than just a new textbook. The New Testament in Antiquity carefully develops how Jewish and Hellenistic cultures formed the essential environment in which the New Testament authors wrote their books and letters. It argues that knowing the land, history, and culture of this world brings remarkable new insights into how we read the New Testament itself. Numerous sidebars provide windows into the Jewish, Hellenistic, and Roman worlds and integrate this material with the interpretation of the literature of the New Testament. Later Jewish theology prescribed ritual washing for gentiles who wished to become Jewish proselytes (b. Yebah 46a; 71a), though

scholars debate whether this practice was observed during the first century. Josephus provides further testimony that John linked baptism with the call to righteous behavior: “That the washing [with water] would be acceptable to him, sins [only], but for the purification of the body; supposing still that the soul was thoroughly purified beforehand by righteousness” (Ant. 18.5.2 [117]).

Like Matthew, Luke recounts both the genealogy and temptation of Jesus (3:23 – 4:13; see ch. 8), after which Jesus begins his public ministry in Galilee in the power of the Spirit (4:14 – 15). In his genealogy, Luke, a gentile, underscores the universality of Christ as Savior and Lord of all human beings.

Luke introduces Jesus’s Galilean ministry with a summary statement (4:14 – 15), which highlights characteristic themes in Luke: Jesus carries out his ministry in the power of the Spirit (4:14), he engages in a vigorous teaching ministry (4:15a; cf. 6:17 – 49), and “everyone praised” his ministry (4:15b). The first full picture of Jesus’s teaching takes place in the synagogue in Jesus’s hometown, Nazareth (4:16 – 29). The reading of Scripture and an exposition were common components of a synagogue service. Jesus presents himself as the Spirit-anointed prophet who fulfills Isaiah 61:1 – 2 and 58:6. After the reading he proclaims that the time of fulfillment has come (4:21). The blessings described are the signs of the messianic age — the Spirit has returned and is upon him, the good news has come, and the liberation of Israel is

An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar
Equip your students to translate the Greek New Testament accurately using the latest developments in linguistics and syntax.
Elementary Syntax and Linguistics Dana M. Harris $54.99 | $32.99 Hardcover - 448 pages ISBN 9780310108573
An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar focuses on the linguistic and syntactic elements of Koine Greek to equip learners for accurate interpretation. Drawing upon twenty years of Greek teaching experience and the latest developments in linguistics and syntax, Harris introduces students to basic concepts and categories necessary for grasping Greek in ways that are clear and intuitive. This solid foundation enables students first to internalize key concepts, then to apply and build upon them as more complex ideas are introduced. Several features are specifically designed to aid student's learning: NEW RELEASE JULY 2020
• Instructor’s manual • Presentation slides • Sample syllabus • Chapter quizzes
• Key concepts are graphically coded to offer visual reinforcement of explanations and to facilitate learning forms and identifying their functions • Key concepts are followed by numerous examples from the Greek New Testament • Students learn how to mark Greek texts so that they can begin to "see" the syntax, identify the boundaries of syntactic units, and construct syntactic outlines as part of their preaching or teaching preparation • Four integrative chapters, roughly corresponding to the midterms and final exams of a two-semester sequence, summarize material to date and reinforce key concepts. Here students are also introduced to exegetical and interpretive concepts and practices that they will need for subsequent Greek studies and beyond. • "Going Deeper" and "For the Curious" offer supplemental information for students interested in learning more or in moving to advanced language study. The accompanying workbook and video lectures (both sold separately) reinforce key concepts through additional contact with the material from each chapter of the grammar. All exercises in the workbook are taken from the Greek New Testament and the Septuagint and include extensive syntactical and exegetical notes to aid students.

Basics of Hebrew Accents provides readers of biblical Hebrew with a comprehensive working knowledge of accentuation. Hebrew accents can be perplexing but knowing them and their functions will help students become better readers of the Hebrew Bible. The book is an ideal tool for beginning students who are learning to read the language as well as for more advanced students who are reading and translating the Hebrew text. Designed for use alongside the 3rd edition of the bestselling textbook, Basics of Biblical Hebrew, author Mark Futato has carefully organized his book to emphasize accessibility while providing: • • • •
Basics of Hebrew Discourse
Clear explanations of the primary functions of Hebrew accents A student-friendly presentation Accessibility for independent study A practical and handy reference resource for all students of the Hebrew Bible
MARK D. FUTATO, SR. (PhD, The Catholic University of America) serves as the Robert L. Maclellan Professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando. He has published multiple books on the Psalms as well as an introduction to biblical Hebrew. His current work includes a commentary on Jonah. Advances in the Study of Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic is an introduction to issues of interest in the current world of biblical Hebrew and Aramaic scholarship. A growing knowledge of the Semitic languages and the field of linguistics continues to enhance understanding of biblical Hebrew. Comprehension of these items directly affects the way we read the Hebrew Bible and is therefore invaluable for those interested in the Old Testament. This book fills a gap in the field of biblical Hebrew linguistics and provides an accessible, comprehensive, up-to-date, and linguistically-informed investigation of the language.
Basics of Hebrew Discourse: A Guide to Working with Hebrew Prose and Poetry by Matthew H. Patton, Frederic Clarke Putnam, and Miles V. Van Pelt is a syntax resource for intermediate Hebrew students. This basics book introduces students to the principles and exegetical benefits of discourse analysis (text linguistics) when applied to biblical Hebrew prose and poetry. Where standard Hebrew reference grammars have traditionally worked to describe the relationship between words and phrases within discrete clauses (micro syntax), discourse analysis works to describe those relationships that exist between clauses and texts (macro syntax).
Topics addressed include: • • • • • • • •
Linguistic theories Lexical semantics and lexicography Verbal stems Tense, mood, and aspect in the verbal system Register, dialect, and code-switching Dating of Biblical Hebrew texts Discourse analysis Teaching and learning Biblical Hebrew
BENJAMIN J. NOONAN (PhD, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion) is associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina.

This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. “Inviting, accessible, irenic. I welcome this new book and recommend it highly!” —TIMOTHY GEORGE, Beeson Divinity School “Introductory theology textbooks are a dime-a-dozen. What separates Engaging Theology from the rest of the pack is it is genuinely engaging and in multiple ways: it engages the reader with its lively prose and common sense speak; it engages the Christian tradition in faithful and informed ways; it engages the contemporary world beyond theology; and it engages practice as it speaks into ministry, vocation, and praxis. Theology is on the move, and Blackwell and Hatchet are aware of this and help readers navigate the terrain in responsible and informative ways. This is the sort of introductory texts students are now looking for and need.” —MYK HABETS, School of Theology, Laidlaw College, Auckland, New Zealand NEW RELEASE NOW AVAILABLE $34.99 | $20.99 Hardcover - 304 pages ISBN 9780310092766
Engaging Theology is an introductory theology textbook that grounds a treatment of standard systematic topics in the wider context of life and practice and shows the relevance of each doctrine to the church. The book treats the essential doctrines of Christian orthodoxy by following the pattern of story, doctrinal exposition, theological relevance, and spiritual relevance.

“An ideal primer for anyone wanting to get a grip on the dense debates about the nature of the atonement.” —MICHAEL F. BIRD, Ridley College
“Blending lively prose with robust doctrine, this volume is one I will recommend widely and enthusiastically for years to come.” —KAREN SWALLOW PRIOR, Liberty University
Modern treatments of atonement doctrine often tend toward one of two extremes: either a defensive hierarchy, in which one model is singled out as most important; or a disconnected plurality, in which multiple images are affirmed but with no order or arrangement. In contrast to these imbalances, Joshua McNall argues for an ordered reintegration of four classic “pieces” of atonement doctrine through the image of a Christ-shaped “mosaic”:
“This well-crafted handbook is full of solid, wise, and practical Christian guidance for Christian students in theology.” —DOUGLAS A. SWEENEY, Beeson Divinity School
• Recapitulation—the foundational “feet” • Penal substitution (and vicarious representation)—the beating “heart” • Christus Victor—the crowning “head” • Moral influence—the beckoning and restraining “hands”
Around a table sit men and women with distinct roles: The Interpreter, the Theologian, the Virtuous, the Philosopher, the Scientist, the Artist, the Minister, and the Historian. Each is ready to engage in a passionate discussion centered on God, his works, and his ways. Regardless of which role you play at the same table, you’re invited. You simply need to pull up a chair and join the conversation. But how? What do you say when you take your seat? Where do you start? What are the rules of the dialogue?
While no one model of atonement is set above or against the others, McNall notes particular ways in which the “pieces” of Christ’s work support one another.
A Practical Primer on Theological Method is not only a “howto” manual for doing theology, but a handbook of etiquette for doctrinal discussions with other believers. This popular-level introductory text presents the proper manner, mode, and means of engaging fruitfully in theology.

CHURCH HISTORY & HISTORICAL THEOLOGY 47
Epic: An Around-the-World Journey through Christian History Tim Challies History doesn’t have to be boring and stuffy. And the history of Christianity is not. It is filled with interesting people and events. Though many of these events happened long ago and the people we remember are long dead, there are objects that remain—objects that whisper a story to us, if we are willing to listen. Join author and pastor Tim Challies as he embarks on a three-year journey spanning multiple continents and some of the most unusual places in the world. Challies introduces you to thirty-three carefully selected objects that helps readers understand the long and complicated history of Christianity in a unique and creative way. Beginning with Jesus and the early church, Challies looks at the importance of graffiti on an ancient jail cell, the creedal significance of a carving on a museum statue, and the enduring importance of ancient manuscripts and books. From pulpits and paintings, posters and pieces of machinery, this book is a helpful introduction to the story of Christianity. It is also a wonderful complement to the Epic DVD, a ten session video series that takes viewers on location to the objects highlighted in the book. Used together, they serve as a helpful resource for students and anyone interested in working through an overview of the history of Christianity.

50 CHRISTIANITY & CULTURE
2084 Artificial Intelligence, the Future of Humanity, and the God Question John C. Lennox Where did we come from? Where we are going? How will the increased incorporation of AI into our lives affect our individual and corporate privacy, the security of our jobs, our political and personal freedoms, and the future of our species as a whole? Popular answers to these questions portrayed in the bestsellers Sapiens and Homo Deus by historian Yuval Noah Harari and Origins by novelist Dan Brown wildly differ: from utopian vistas of super-humans working alongside super-intelligent AI to Orwellian outcomes where humans are controlled or outcompeted by super-intelligent machines or superior versions of ourselves. In 2084, scientist and philosopher John C. Lennox addresses the questions of where humanity is going in terms of technological enhancement, bioengineering, and artificial intelligence. He provides a clear overview of the current capacity of AI, its advantages and disadvantages, as well as the potential future implications, clearly defining the terms associated with this field and delineating between the current scientific facts and more speculative claims. Lennox argues that the worldview, and therefore ethics, with which we approach this area will have serious implications for any future AI and how it interacts with humanity.

Politics After Christendom argues that living faithfully as a Christian is possible in a world that is indifferent or even hostile to the Christian faith. Drawing from Augustine’s two-cities theory, Luther’s two-kingdoms approach, natural law, and a theology of the biblical covenants, author David VanDrunen distinctively joins these ideas together to present a comprehensive model for Christian political engagement. Politics after Christendom is a significant contribution to political theology that offers a unique blend of biblical, theological, and political reflection on perennial questions about the basis and authority of civil society and the relationship of God’s people to government authority.
DAVID VANDRUNEN (JD, Northwestern University School of Law; PhD Loyola University Chicago) is Robert B. Strimple Professor of Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics at Westminster Seminary California. ALSO AVAILABLE
Recovering from Biblical Manhood and Womanhood helps church leaders engage in a thoughtful critique of the “biblical manhood and womanhood” movement and the effects it has on congregations. Aimee Byrd helps readers critique the Biblicist hermeneutic of the popular movement thoughtfully and biblically. She calls into question their efforts to fundamentally separate men from women by arguing that we encounter God’s Word as a community comprised of men and women commissioned to discipleship and worshipping together. Every believer is called to be active and equal participants in our witness to faith and this commonality unites—female and male— in Christ.
AIMEE BYRD is author, speaker, blogger, podcaster, and former coffee shop owner. She is the author of several books and cohost of Mortification of Spin podcast and frequent blogger for The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. ALSO AVAILABLE

Telling a Better Story How to Talk About God in a Skeptical Age Joshua D. Chatraw The practice of offering reasons for the Christian faith, or apologetics, strikes many unbelievers today as offensive. Christians themselves often view apologetics as unsophisticated or even faith-undermining—an attempt to argue people to belief instead of focusing on presenting the gospel. In Telling a Better Story, author Joshua Chatraw presents a new and better way to do apologetics, an inside-out approach that is attuned to our late-modern moment and respectful of unbelievers, all the while remaining focused on Jesus. With attention to cultural understanding, dealing with the difficult issues, and presenting Jesus in a holistic, contextual manner, Telling a Better Story offers a roadmap to effective apologetics both for experienced apologists and those new to sharing their faith with others.

A Fresh Look at History’s Most Influential Figure Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray
A Guide to Understanding the Scripture of Islam Gordon D. Nickel J. Dudley Woodberry, Consulting Editor
$26.99 | $16.19 Hardcover - 256 pages ISBN 9780310531289
In the West Jesus is usually seen through one lens, that of Western reasoning and linear thought. As the world becomes smaller and more people are brought to our door, a broader view of Jesus is needed, one that can be grasped by Easterners and that can penetrate the hearts and imaginations of postmodern Westerners. In Seeing Jesus from the East, alongside the Seeing Jesus from the East Video Study and Seeing Jesus from the East Study Guide, Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray capture a revitalized gospel message through an Eastern lens, revealing its power afresh and sharing the truth about Jesus in a compelling and winsome light. Incorporating story, honor, vivid imagery, sacrifice, and rewards, Seeing Jesus from the East calls readers, both Eastern and Western, to a fresh encounter with the living and restless Jesus.

Counseling Techniques A Comprehensive Resource for Christian Counselors John C. Thomas, General Editor Our decisions determine our lives. Invest in a company that goes bankrupt and you lose your life savings. Say the wrong thing in an interview and you miss the job of the lifetime. Make no decisions and you miss every opportunity. In today’s rapidly changing world, the cost of poor decisions (and no decisions) is higher than ever. In How to Make Big Decisions Wisely, author and scholar Alan Ehler lays out a clear approach to making big decisions based on the Bible and recent discoveries in neuroscience and decision science. He presents a simple, four-step process that can be followed to make any kind of decision, whether personal, professional, or relational. Making big decisions can rewrite lives, careers, families, churches, and businesses. A lot is at stake. Learn how to choose well.
ALAN EHLER (DMin, George Fox Evangelical Seminary) is professor and dean of Barnett College of Ministry and Theology at Southeastern University.
Counseling Techniques provides a useful resource for any type of counseling practitioner. Presenting a wide variety of the most effective and commonly used techniques associated with various diagnoses, theoretical bases, and client populations, it offers experienced therapists and students alike a single, trustworthy resource for clinical reference and guidance.
Feedback and evaluation, both of oneself and by others, are the lifeblood of a successful ministry experience. In A Guide to Theological Reflection, experienced practical ministry professors Jim Wilson and Earl Waggoner introduce the processes and tools of theological reflection for ministry.
Each chapter includes a user-friendly, step-by-step explanation of the techniques covered.
Effective evaluation includes critique and potential course correction for the honest and willing minister, as well as positive affirmation of how one’s desires influence good ministry decisions. A Guide to Theological Reflection introduces tools by which a minister can interact with his or her own thoughts, beliefs, and feelings; external feedback, such as that of a ministry supervisor; and Scripture to inform deep and transformative theological reflection.
JOHN C. THOMAS (PhD, University of South Carolina: PhD, Capella University) is professor of counseling and family studies at Liberty University. $74.99 | $44.99 | Hardcover - 240 pages | ISBN 9780310529446
How to Lead in a World of Distraction
Designed as a textbook for practical ministry courses and theological field education, A Guide to Theological Reflection can also be used in ministry contexts. It provides guidance for students, ministers-intraining, mentors, and advisors, laying a theoretical foundation for theological reflection and demonstrating step-by-step how to practice it well.
Clay Scroggins White noise is a sound-masking tool designed to cover up the things that “distract” us. And while white-noise can occasionally be helpful, there are times when the white noise in our lives drowns out the voices we need to hear. That’s what happens to many leaders. We learn to tune-out distractions, but end up growing deaf to the inner desires and issues that we need to listen to. There are common white noises in leadership and ministry that we use to mask our unpleasant emotions and ignore the desires deep inside of us. Our increasingly busy lives, the numbing nature of entertainment and social media, and the urgency of ministry itself all work together to create a toxic cocktail of emotional distraction. Multiplying the problem is our emotional incompetence. Leaders are more anxious, stressed, and depressed than ever before.
JIM L. WILSON (DMin, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of leadership formation and director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Gateway Seminary. EARL WAGGONER (PhD, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as dean of Biblical Studies and Theology at Colorado Christian University.

Bridging Theory and Practice in Children’s Spirituality explores the different contexts, methods, and situations that influence and foster a child’s spirituality and faith development. Through a blend of theoretical understanding held in tension with practical application, it equips those who are in, or being prepared for, the varied contexts where children are spiritually formed.
In How to Follow Jesus, Craig Springer, executive director of Alpha USA, one of America’s most effective evangelism movements, explodes numerous myths surrounding the Christian faith that create unnecessary obstacles to growth, including:
It represents a broad range of Christian expression writing from a Christ-centered perspective that furthers the conversation about the next steps in children’s spirituality and faith development. Moving beyond the basics of faith nurture and what makes for effective ministry, this resource deepens our understanding of the practices in children’s by bringing together the best of theory and practice and includes contributions from:
• Accepting that forgiveness means going through rather than around our feelings
