VERSE MAPPING: what is it, and how do I do it? Forever Change How You Study Scripture
by KRISTY CAMBRON
MOMENT OF HONESTY: I DON’T ALWAYS UNDERSTAND WHAT I READ IN SCRIPTURE. The Bible wasn’t sinking into my heart. I could go about my day without time in the Word as long as I was cherry-picking verses out when I needed something from God. (Facebook is a good place to find inspirational verses, right?) I’d read a page or two in a Bible study. Write some things down. Pray. And that was it. I didn’t go deeper.

Then, my dad was diagnosed with leukemia. When the crisis hit, it caused me to see that I had been coasting in my spiritual journey for many years. I realized God was only as deeply embedded in my heart as the troubles I wanted him to fix. But no more. No more reading the Bible without really getting it. No more doing devotions just because I think I should. I wanted to need to. I wanted to surrender and be taught by the Holy Spirit. And when I opened up to my best friend about it, she said, “Kristy, why don’t you try verse mapping?”
“No more reading the Bible without really getting it. No more doing devotions just because I think I should.” WHAT IS VERSE MAPPING? Verse Mapping is a method of studying the historical context, transliteration, translation, connotation, and theological framework of a verse in the Bible. Plain and simple? Verse mapping is getting real about studying the Bible. All of it. It’s not just reading. It’s researching everything you can in a verse to learn more about who God is and how He wants to speak to you through His Word.
The process is simple.
• Verse: Select and write your verse to map. • Design: Write your verse in two to four different translations, and identify key words.
VERSE MAPPING LUK E
Gathering the Goodness of God’s Word by Kristy Cambron
• Develop: Look up key words in Hebrew/Greek. Write down definitions, synonyms, and root words. Discover any underlying meaning in the verse and note it.
• Actions: Research and document the people,
places, and the context. Ask: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? Note connections to other concepts in Scripture you find in your research.
• Outcome: Write a summary of what you’ve
learned. Anchor the verse you mapped to your life. This is the treasured truth the map brought you to.
That’s it—five simple steps to change-your-life study time with God! All set? Let’s map.
Let’s be honest— do you have difficulty understanding Scripture? Do you want to research the context of Scripture, but you’re daunted by Greek and Hebrew? Do you hunt for connections in Scripture but fear you’re over-complicating things?

PURSUING GOD Encountering His Love and Beauty in the Bible Margaret Feinberg Genesis and the Gospel of John are written to spark our desire to pursue a deeper relationship with God. In Genesis we realize God created us for love, and we are meant to pursue God’s love and become expressions of it to our world. In John, we see the beauty of God radiating in Jesus Christ; when we pursue God’s beauty we encounter the person in whom God placed his whole heart on display for the world to see. H O W T O STA RT A B I B L E ST U DY in your neighborhood (it’s easier than you think)
by Rozanne Frazee Of course, a pastor’s wife would say it’s easy to start a Bible study in your neighborhood. You probably think I have done this all of my life—Right? WRONG! Until a few years ago, I had never considered starting a Bible study. So, when God stirred my spirit to start one with my neighbors, I tried to shake it saying, “God, if you want me to do this, show me clearly.” A few months later, Randy and I hosted a potluck dinner for the neighborhood. Enter Sandra, whom I had never met, but she knew who Randy and I were. The first words out of her mouth were, “Hi, Rozanne, I called your church to see if there were any Bible studies this summer, but they told me there weren’t.” Knowing that couldn’t be right, I suggested I check into it for her. Instead of simply leaving it at that, I hesitantly asked, “What would you think about starting a Bible study here in our neighborhood?” Her eyes lit up and she said, “Oh, I have always dreamed of simply walking to a Bible study after I came home from a long day at work.” I smiled, and we agreed to chat the next day. I silently giggled to myself “Ok, God, that was clear enough!”
14
800 - 727 - 3480 | B I B L E S T U DYS O U R C E . CO M
After Sandra and I blanketed our 100-house neighborhood with invitations, fear began to grip me. “What if no one comes? Worse yet, what if they DO come? They know I’m a pastor’s wife—will they expect me to have all the answers? I don’t!” But I pressed on with prayer, prayer, and more prayer.
Here are some of the obstacles God helped me overcome. I can’t teach! I found a plethora of Bible studies available with wonderful teaching videos of people who teach really well. We chose one we were interested in, and let the ladies know the study was meant to get us in God’s Word for ourselves and discover what He had for each of us. We used the discussion questions provided in the companion study guide to facilitate discussion.
Share the responsibility. I chose a co-leader. My co-leader covered meetings I couldn’t make. If you want, you can alternate weeks.
My house is not “Pinterest perfect.” Not many of us have those anyway, so most will feel right at home. If you wait until your house is perfect, you’ll never do it. There may be someone in the group who enjoys entertaining; ask them if they would open their home for the gathering, and you can focus on leading.
Keep it simple, sweetheart! Don’t try to serve a gourmet meal or dessert every time, unless you want to. Store bought goodies and iced tea/ coffee are fine. If you want to celebrate at the end of a study, then do a potluck so not all the food preparation falls on you.
Don’t start the study prematurely. Christians get a bad rap sometimes if we appear as though we are all about trying to evangelize or recruit for our church. If you are new to the neighborhood and want to get to know other women, the Bible study probably isn’t the way to start. Get involved in other activities happening in your neighborhood first. For me, it meant participating in the neighborhood garage sale, helping canvas houses for signatures to start recycling pickup, and joining the Neighborhood Watch group. This demonstrates commitment and love for your neighbors before asking them to jump on what you want to do.
Remember it is the Holy Spirit who brings people to salvation. Make the salvation message clear but don’t push. Let the study/discussion plant seeds and God will do some of His best work! So, what happened in my neighborhood? They did come! Twenty ladies from many different churches; everyone in a different place in their spiritual journey. Some who faithfully attended church and some who hadn’t been in church in many years. My favorite treasure is that several of the teenage daughters started coming. In the spring, one of them became a believer and was baptized in a neighborhood pool!
My best advice, if you are feeling the nudge to begin a Bible study in your neighborhood, answer that call with a “Yes”! You will be amazed at the outcome, not only with the group, but how God impacts your own heart.

Breakfast
Cookies
(Gluten free!)
This recipe is adapted from Nikki’s Healthy Cookies, from Heidi Swanson’s lovely blog, 10cookbooks.com.
from B R E A D
INGREDIENTS 3 large ripe bananas, well mashed (about 1 ½ cups) ¼ cup coconut oil, warmed just a little so it isn’t solid (or alternatively, olive oil) 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups rolled oats 2/3 cup almond meal
& WINE
by
Shauna NIEQUIST ½ teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 2/3 cup shredded coconut ½ cup chopped walnuts ¼ cup chocolate chips
INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a fork, then add in coconut oil and vanilla. 2. Add the oats, almond meal, salt, and baking powder, and stir until combined. Add the coconut, walnuts, and chocolate chips, and stir again. 3. Form the dough into 12 balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and flatten them a little bit. Bake at 350 degrees for 14 to 16 minutes. Makes: 12 cookies Heidi’s recipe calls for chopped dark chocolate, cinnamon, and unsweetened coconut flakes. I reduce the amount of chocolate because it’s breakfast, and the point of this cookie is that I want to feel deeply virtuous when I eat it in the morning, so I replace most of the chocolate with chopped walnuts. Also, forget what I just said about virtue, because I use sweetened coconut. It’s the only kind I can get without a trip to Whole Foods, which isn’t always part of our weekly routine. The sweetened coconut makes the cookie sweeter, obviously, so you don’t miss the chocolate as much. And I omit the cinnamon, because I don’t really like cinnamon. Also, Heidi makes sweet little cookies, little bites almost, but when it’s five in the morning, I only have it in me to do one batch, so I make big breakfast cookies, dropped on to the baking sheet in heaping tablespoons. And sometimes I make a cherry almond version: instead of the walnuts and chocolate chips, add ½ cup slivered almonds and ¼ cup dried cherries; instead of vanilla, add almond extract.

A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are
A Daring Path into the Abundant Life
“How,” Ann muses, “do you break the bondage of fear that has white-knuckle control on your life and instead embrace everyday blessings? How can you live life with a heart overflowing with delight?” Ann encourages participants to take on the life-changing discipline of journaling God’s gifts—to find the good in life in all circumstances. It’s only in this expression of gratitude for the life we already have, that we discover the life we’ve always wanted. Five sessions
The lesson from the farm is this: Never be afraid of being a broken thing. The seed breaks to give us wheat. The soil breaks to give us the crop, the wheat breaks to give us the bread. And the bread breaks to give us the feast. God does great things through the greatly wounded. God sees the broken as the best and He sees the best in the broken and He calls the wounded to be the world changers.

Sheila lives in Dallas with her husband and son, and she loves teaching the Bible, writing daily, her menagerie of animals, and coffee (rumor has it she’s lobbying a wellknown coffee chain to add a bigger serving size called “bucket”).

Chrystal E VA NS H U R S T Chrystal is a “used-to-be,” career-minded, bean-counter, on-the-path-to-big-bucks, single gal…turned homeschooling, bread-baking, garden-attempting, cloth-diapering mommy-blogger…turned work-at-home-mom who shamelessly uses paper plates, keeps a stock of frozen pizzas on hand, strives for small victories over #fatdemon, runner wannabe, and Starbucks junkie. She is the first-born to Dr. Tony and Lois Evans, wife to gentle giant Jessie, and she’s got college-life and kindergarten happening simultaneously amongst her five children.
Lisa H A R P E R Both hilarious storyteller and theological scholar, Lisa’s writing and speaking overflow with colorful, pop-culture references that connect the Bible era and modern life. She says, self-deprecatingly, “I’m so grateful for the opportunities God’s given me but don’t forget, he often uses donkeys and rocks!” She never married, but always wanted a child. When she heard about a dying orphan in Haiti named Missy, she undertook a two-year fight to save her life, and got to bring her home in 2014.
Jess C O NNO L LY Jess is a gal who is in the thick of it. She is the co-owner of All Good Things Collective print shop and helped start both She Reads Truth and The Influence Network. She and her husband Nick planted Gospel Community Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina where they live with their four children, who she’s crazy about, and their dog Deacon, who she’s still on the fence about.
Geri SC A Z Z E R O Geri famously told her husband, “I quit,” and left the church he pastored (!), beginning a journey that transformed her and her marriage. Geri and Pete Scazzero are cofounders of Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, a ministry that equips churches in a beneath-thesurface spiritual formation paradigm that integrates emotional health and contemplative spirituality. Geri and Pete raised four daughters in Queens, New York City, and she is an avid cook who stays active by hiking, biking, skiing, and body surfing.
