A Pet’s Permaculture Paradise
Fleet Farming Program Director Caroline Chomanics on gardening with — and for — your pet Horticultural therapy — green spaces, sunshine and meaningful activity — isn’t an effective tool for just us humans, the twolegged animal. Whether there’s a bone to bury, or trash to compost, digging dirt is also good for Man’s Best Friend. A true, organic garden can pay homage to that special connection between you and your pet. We sat down with Caroline Chomanics, cat lover, pet enthusiast, and program director at Fleet Farming, a coinitiative of IDEAS For Us, to learn more about her upcoming program, “Creating a Pet Garden,” at the Center for Health & Wellbeing. While stroking her cat’s fur (a Maine Coon named Freya), Chomanics happily explained why building a permaculture paradise for you and your pet can support your overall health and wellbeing.
What is the connection between our animals, wellbeing and gardening?
4
Having your animals outside in a gardening environment helps you to relax. We know that seeing the color green alone is relaxing. I think that animals can provide a positive environment
for healing, relaxation, and exercise. I was talking to a friend, and she said that the dog she recently adopted is helping her mental health. She struggles with depression and if it wasn’t for her dog, sometimes she wouldn’t leave the house all day. Her dog is an active dog that needs regular walks. And she says that, in addition to having to take the dog out for these regular walks, having something to care for makes it easier for her to come out of her depression and care for herself, too.
Are there plants you recommend owners provide their pets? With dogs, they can have gardens full of lemongrass. Dogs can even eat wheat grass. These are so easy to grow and it’s really rewarding. Roses that are not synthetically fertilized, sugar cane, cannon meal are edible to dogs and cats. And for cats, of course we know cat grass and catnip are great, but lemongrass, thyme and mint are, too, because catnip is in the mint family. I will be getting more into all of this during our 1 PM program on Wednesday, June 1. You can have a low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing garden for you and your pet. The pets
that we will focus on in this program are dogs, cats, birds, rats, rabbits, and reptiles. If you’ve ever owned a Bearded Dragon, you know to feed them blueberries, or to feed them lettuce. There are a lot of pets that share similar edible garden diets.
What are some plants pet owners should avoid? Valerian and licorice root, peace lilies, Ivy and jade plant, Plant of Steel and Poinsettia are highly toxic to animals. People don’t know how some of their house plants can be toxic to their animals, too.
What’s one misconception about gardening that you want to share? [Gardening] doesn’t have to be something overwhelming or daunting. Fertilizers and different soil amendments can make it seem overwhelming, but I hope attendees can learn these tips and tricks and that our gardening classes can make gardening a lot simpler than it seems.

The Joy of Dogs:
Read Now on YourHealthandWellbeing.org “Dogs can really help regulate emotions, so can any animal really. It doesn’t have to be a dog. The companionship, the physical presence of an animal is soothing to the nervous system. There is a peace that comes with petting an animal and their closeness. After all you know, Dog spelled backward is God.” — Joy Henderson fitness instructor at the Crosby Wellness Center, passionate dog owner and foster parent

Crosby Wellness Center Member Spotlight
Rachel McCoy
Community, Consistency and a Healthy Dose of Competition at Crosby What is your formula for fitness success? For some, it’s the motivation to fit into a new dress by the summer’s high school reunion. For others, it’s the desire for a specific physique or the prevention of medical diagnoses like diabetes or heart disease. For Rachel McCoy, a dedicated and engaged member of the Crosby Wellness Center at the Center for Health & Wellbeing in Winter Park, her formula for success is tied to three simple concepts: commitment, community, and a healthy dose of competition, all of which she finds in abundance at Crosby.
Commitment
16
Rachel, 58, joined the Crosby Wellness Center in May of 2021. Like many in the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had neglected her physical health and was looking for a place to start her fitness journey. At Crosby, Rachel found exactly what she needed; a financial assistance
program, available to those who qualify, helped Rachel make the commitment to join. “When I joined, the Crosby staff told me I had to commit. And I took them seriously! I was here almost every day, three or four hours a day. I treated it like it was a job when I was first starting out so I could establish the habit,” she shares.
Community Rachel is a regular in many of Crosby’s Group Exercise classes, and from the pool to the Pilates reformer, she has built a community of accountability partners who support and encourage her, and, importantly, take note of when she’s missing from the wellness center for more than a day or two. “I like the water, and I like exercising in the water. The ladies in the aqua fitness classes were so nice and so welcoming when I joined. They just embraced me and supported me when I shared about my goals and my journey and were
so encouraging when they noticed I had started to lose weight,” Rachel says. “Overall, it’s just so easy to talk to everyone here. The trainers, the people are so nice and supportive.”
& Wellbeing. Crosby’s team of expert certified fitness professionals provides all the education, support and encouragement you need to make a lasting commitment to your health.
And a Healthy Dose of Competition
Scan this QR code to learn more about membership options and to schedule a tour today.
An ongoing weight-loss competition with her family, and with her fellow members in the regular member competitions sponsored by Crosby, fuel Rachel’s progress towards the goal she’s set for her 60th birthday. That goal comes complete with a visual she manifests every time she visits Crosby: to attend her celebratory birthday dinner wearing a nice top tucked into her pants...and with no “belly bulge “to be seen. In her visual, shining jewelry accents a healthy and smiling face, radiant from her time spent dedicated to her fitness journey. The Crosby team sings Rachel’s praises, taking note of her commitment, enthusiasm, and willingness to try new things. “Rachel comes in almost every day, and she has participated in just about every class we offer, including Pilates Reformer classes. She also participates in all our fun member programs and events throughout the year; Rachel was the Crosby Games gold medal winner in July 2021,” says Heather Pomeisl, with membership services at the Crosby Wellness Center. A shining example to others who may be looking for inspiration to start – and stay committed to a fitness routine, Rachel has sage advice to offer. “You have to start somewhere. Think of your fitness journey like a baby – a baby takes its steps; it stumbles and falls but the baby never stops trying to walk to the gate. So that’s my advice – stay in the fight and don’t quit. You’re going to have days you don’t want to head to the gym. But once you make that connection with somebody, it’ll encourage you to stay with it.” Like Rachel, you too can discover your fit at the Crosby Wellness Center at the Center for Health

Medicine
What is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Fatty liver disease is a condition in which accumulated fat in the liver can lead to swelling and inflammation, which over time may cause liver scarring, cirrhosis, and related health problems such as liver failure and liver cancer. This serious health issue occurs in up to 25 percent of Americans and frequently occurs in the setting of excess weight and diabetes.
What causes Fatty Liver? People who have a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 27, or are diabetic, are at higher risk for fatty liver disease. People who gain weight mainly in the abdomen are at greater risk compared to those who distribute weight in the hips or thighs. Additionally, those with a family history of fatty liver disease may have a genetic predisposition for the disease. Fatty liver disease typically occurs in conjunction with other obesity-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and most importantly, diabetes.
How do I treat Fatty Liver? Currently, no medications have been FDA approved to treat fatty liver disease, but weight loss has been shown to reverse fat accumulation, inflammation and even mild

Acupuncture Services
AdventHealth Sports Med & Rehab is proud to offer acupuncture services as part of our comprehensive wellness program. Combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet, acupuncture can keep you feeling great and performing at your best.
How Acupuncture Works An acupuncturist places hair-thin, sterile, disposable needles at specific acupoints on the body. These carefully selected points promote natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, physical and emotional health, and overall wellbeing. Acupuncture is a safe, painless and effective way to address a wide variety of medical problems.
What to Expect at Your Appointment Your appointment begins with an evaluation by an acupuncturist, which includes a full health history, presenting symptoms, lifestyle and diet. Medical pulse diagnosis and examination of the tongue provide crucial information about what is occurring systemically in your body. A treatment plan is then administered, which may include acupuncture, cupping, topical herbal ointments, exercise and dietary changes. The first session with your physician lasts 50 minutes.
Benefits of Acupuncture Acupuncture is recognized by leading national and international health organizations to be an effective treatment for a wide variety of medical problems. Some of the most common health concerns that acupuncture can help with include: • Pain relief and management
