Food as Medicine: Cooking for Gut Health

10

Why is gut health so important? If you have an imbalance in your gut bacteria, you could develop something called dysbiosis, which can, in turn, lead to sleep disturbances, migraine, skin irritation, unexplained weight gain or loss, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, strong cravings for sugar and carbs, moodiness, and autoimmune disease … just to name a few! In this cooking program, Allison Harrell will share ways to improve your gut health by eating delicious plant- powered food. She’ll be joined in the

Keto. South Beach Diet. Paleo. Some of the trendiest diets are characterized by maintaining a low‑carb eating style. Watching your carbs isn’t just a trend; it can be a key to sustained healthy weight management. In this class, Chef Collette Haw will demonstrate three delicious recipes that may be low in carbs but are high in flavor and health benefits: Creamy Tomato & Basil Chicken; Turkey Lettuce Wraps; and Hamburger Bowls. Program fee of $25.

Tuesday, September 20, 11 AM – 12:30 PM

In the Kitchen with Edible Orlando: Low Glycemic Cooking The Glycemic Index (GI) is a system doctors use to measure carbohydrates in specific foods and to quantify how these foods raise blood sugar levels. In other words – not all carbs are created equal, and this set of guidelines helps people swap foods higher on the GI scale with alternatives that have lower numbers. Numerous studies have shown low GI diets can reduce blood sugar levels (something especially important for those with diabetes), lower the risk of heart disease, aid in weight loss, and lower cholesterol. In this live, interactive cooking program, Katie Farmand will demonstrate three delicious recipes highlighting low GI foods: Ginger broth with Chicken Meatballs; Barley Tabbouleh; and Dark Chocolate-nut Clusters. Program fee of $25.
