“The Center for Health & Wellbeing has an extremely welcoming atmosphere. Even though this is the first time I’ve ever been here, I didn’t feel out of place. To newcomers, the Center might seem intimidating because of its name and because people associate gyms with having to be a member, but that is not the case here. Everyone was very friendly, and I would encourage anybody to visit because it’s a place for everyone.”

Q: What would you tell somebody who was considering taking their fitness experience to the next level, like you did when you began competing?

Shane: Find a coach who is passionate about you and who looks out for you. That’s the best way to do it, in my opinion. Your coach is going to support you through your journey. They’re going to make sure you’re focused, and they’ll learn who you are and make sure you’re doing well.

Shane: The people are great. The staff – Nick, Kate, everyone at the Crosby member desk, the Center for Health & Wellbeing Welcome Desk – I know these people, and they’re always so motivating and so welcoming. And I love the community on the Crosby fitness floor. Some of these people are my neighbors, and it’s good to see them in here, working on themselves, too.

• Prevention and rehabilitation programs improving your overall health

Q: When you’re standing on the podium and you’re about to lift, what’s going through your mind?

Shane: I try to not to overanalyze the lift. I tell myself, “You already know how to do this. Don’t even think about it. Just shut up and lift.” I try not to focus on anyone in front of me – I look at the wall with a blank stare, and just go for it.
