CHW Snowbirds LuncheonCelebrating the Power of Women

On Sunday, March 1, 2020, we celebrated the Power of Women at the CHW Snowbird Luncheon in Bal Harbour, Florida. Many thanks to Roslyn Joseph for generously hosting the event in her lovely home; Zehavit, for travelling all the way from Israel to share her incredibly moving experience as a domestic abuse survivor and how she was saved by a WIZO Shelter for battered women; and all those who joined us at this sold out event!

Art and Healing: Mandala Painting Workshop with Zehavit

On June 11, 2020, Zehavit, a domestic abuse survivor, shared her story and inspired others to use their creativity. She also shared some inspiring and relevant stories from her first few weeks working at the WIZO emergency shelter, where she is also conducting art workshops with the mothers and children. Over 50 participants registered to unleash their inner artist. Zehavit teaching CHW Supporters the art of Mandala Painting via ZOOM.

Father’s Day Zoom BBQ- With Comedian Joel Chasnoff

On June 21, 2020, over 100 participants registered to spend Father’s Day laughing together from the safety of their own home. “Virtual burgers” were donated in honour of the special men in people’s lives, and the crowd was treated to a special live show by comedian Joel Chasnoff. Funds raised from this virtual Father’s Day BBQ will help the hospital workers at the Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh) and Hadassah Hospital in Israel who are working tirelessly on the frontlines in the battle against the coronavirus.

COVID-19 has vastly impacted how businesses and charities hold fundraising events, but our CHW Centres, Canvassers, Supporters and Volunteers have all risen up to the challenge and managed to plan and execute several ONLINE EVENTS that were a big success! Check out the CHW Events Calendar on Page 64 to make sure you don’t miss out on some exciting new virtual events coming up!

CHW CALGARY

JCC Members Night

On March 4, a group of 25 members met at JCC. Cathy Williams gave us a report on her visit to Israel projects from January 22 to 30, 2020. Highlights were: attending World WIZO Festive Dinner and Celebration of a Lifetime; visits to Terry Schwarzfeld Daycare Centre in Acco; High Tech Program for Girls in Jaffa; Tel Aviv Foundation Partnership Launch with Tel Aviv Mayor; The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh); Hadassah Medical Organization; Hadassah Academic College; CHW Netanya Technological High School; CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village; CHW Nahalal Children & Youth Village; and Neri Bloomfield Academy of Design; as well as meeting Zehavit Grossman, a survivor of domestic abuse, who was assisted at a WIZO Women’s shelter in Jerusalem. Time was spent interviewing and filming staff, students, parents, and patients. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to visit the CHW projects, spending time with and getting to know other staff and Board members.

CHW Calgary Tikvah Chapter Night with Guest Author Sharon Butala

On March 12, 2020, members of the CHW Calgary Tikvah Chapter met at Lila Mydlarski’s home with a wonderful discussion about women and aging with guest author Sharon Butala as portrayed in her recent book of short stories “Season of Fury and Wonder.” We had the pleasure of hosting Sharon a few years ago after an earlier book of short stories was published in Hebrew and she attended the launch in Israel.

Social Distance Meeting with CHW Calgary Centre President Betty Sherwood

An outdoor meeting was held at Betty Sherwood’s home on June 24 to bring everyone up to date on the National and local picture. It was agreed that all present would take part in a plan to ensure each Annual Campaign donor be sent a hand written thank you note. These notes have been very well received! Despite the pandemic, Calgary hopes to carry on its fall activities in a revised form, plans are being discussed.

Major Donor Virtual Appreciation Tea

On May 13, 2020, CHW Kitchener-Waterloo held a virtual Tea in appreciation of our major donors. A dozen attendees, including former KW residents who now live in Toronto and Muskoka, dressed up in their finery, fancy teacups in hand, to listen to National First Vice-President Elayna Latsky speak about donor impacts on CHW projects. Afterwards we enjoyed schmoozing. A good time was had by all!

COVID-19 impacted many of CHW Montreal Centre activities this spring and summer. Our Annual Passover Basket project was quickly converted to Passover donation cards and raised over $31,000. The CHW Mahjong Game Night in honour of Hildie Gossack was cancelled but we look forward to hosting the event in 2021. Our guests kindly donated their tickets in lieu of the event and raised close to $2,000 for CHW projects. And finally, our marquis event, the 46th Annual Pro-Am for Kids Golf Tournament, was cancelled but our sponsors and players still rallied to the cause and raised over $55,000 to support our youth in Israel. We look forward to hitting the links next year on July 15, 2021.

The Members of the Anna Zaitchick Chapter are on the road again…After postponing their annual CHW Walk in June, the ladies are going to walk while respecting social distancing guidelines on Sunday, September 13. The team goal is to raise $15,000 for CHW projects. To sponsor a walker, visit www.chw.ca/walk2020

CHW Montreal’s Annual Art Auction will be online this year! Stay tuned for a link to bid on an amazing collection of artwork ranging from trendy street art to eye-catching, colourful still-life. We look forward to reaching a whole new market of enthusiastic art buyers.

CHW Ottawa Spring Phantom Tea 2020

The CHW Ottawa Annual Spring Tea 2020 was turned into the CHW Ottawa Phantom Tea. With some fast thinking and hard work, the Phantom Tea on June 7 was held over Zoom with an attendance of almost 100 donors and members. This year’s honouree was Lawrence Wall and with the event being held over Zoom, it allowed friends and family from across Canada, the US and the UK to attend. Lawrence is a well known CBC announcer and volunteer. It was a great success and 3 local artists donated pieces to be won.

CHW Toronto Major Supporters Event

On February 27, 2020, CHW Toronto Centre held a Major Supporters Event to kick-off our Annual Campaign, which launched on March 1. Graciously hosted by Sheryl and Kevin Sherkin, we welcomed Zehavit, a survivor of domestic abuse and recipient of assistance and rehabilitation at a WIZO Shelter for Battered women in Jerusalem. Thank you, Zehavit, for sharing and thank you to everybody who attended the event.

CHW Toronto B’Yachad Chapter Paint Night

On March 5, 2020, CHW Toronto B’Yachad Chapter held a Paint Night in support of CHW. Attendees learned to artistically express themselves by painting their own masterpieces, while schmoozing with friends, and enjoying delicious refreshments. Thank you to everybody who attended! The awe-inspiring art work was bold, vivid and beautiful! Kol Hakavod!

2020 Annual Campaign Canvasser Launch Dinner

On March 5, 2020, CHW Toronto Centre held its Canvasser dinner to officially kick-off the 2020 Annual Campaign. The evening included a presentation by CHW National Executive Director, Alina Ianson, who shared insights into CHW programs, projects and fundraising goals. Details were provided about the Campaign, followed by a delicious dinner. A special thank you to our CHW Toronto Annual Campaign Chair and VP, Barb Rosenstein, for hosting the event in her lovely home, as well as to our wonderful volunteers. Home is where the Heart is!

CHW Toronto Dor L’Dor Spin-a-thon

CHW Toronto Dor L’Dor chapter was planning to hold their 5th annual Spin-A-Thon, but put the brakes on the event due to COVID-19. The members of Dor L’Dor Chapter still managed to successfully raise funds for CHW ahead of time, and plan to jump back on their bikes to spin when the time is right!

CHW Toronto Tamid Chapter Presents: Great Night Out (GNO)!

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CHW Toronto Tamid Great Night Out (GNO) scheduled for March 26, 2020, was cancelled. Many people who had purchased tickets to the show converted their tickets into a donation to CHW, and we would like to thank them for their generosity! We hope that GNO can return next year!

CHW Toronto Atid Passover Tulips

CHW Toronto Atid Chapter had an amazingly successful year selling over 400 pots of tulips for Passover, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were not able to make the deliveries this year. In lieu of tulips, a beautiful personalized card was sent out to friends and family to show that someone was thinking of them at Pesach Time!

CHW Toronto Tinokot Chapter ‘ZOOM’ba Fundraiser

On Sunday, May 3, 2020, Tinokot Chapter hosted their annual Zumba fundraiser, but this year was a little different... it became a ZOOMba fundraiser! Tinokot Chapter members and friends worked up a sweat from the comfort of their own homes. Thank you to everyone who supported Tinokot Chapters’ fundraising efforts to support the Dairy Program at CHW Nahalal Children and Youth Village!

CHW Toronto Rimon Works Out via ZOOM

On May 14, 2020, CHW Rimon Chapter, along with their friends and families, got together via ZOOM for their annual Rimon Works Out fundraiser. This year, participants were treated to a Krav Maga lesson. This form of self-defense was developed for Israel’s Security and Defense forces, and is a combination of techniques sourced from boxing, wrestling, aikido, judo, and karate. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported Rimon Chapter!

CHW Toronto Lev Zahav Chapter Mother’s Day Fundraiser

This year, the CHW Toronto Lev Zahav’s Mother’s Day Fundraiser looked a little different. In its 11th year, instead of delivering flowers for Mother’s Day, a beautiful personalized card was delivered to over 460 special women!

CHW Toronto Tzedakah Chapter At Our Table “Home Edition”

Mazel Tov to CHW Toronto Tzedakah Chapter for another tremendously successful At Our Table event! Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tzedakah Chapter managed to raise over $165,000 for CHW projects. Guests were treated to a delightful program, including cocktail and cooking demonstrations, and performances by talented musicians, Ezra Jordan, and Zoe Sky Jordan, right in the comfort of their own home.

CHW Vancouver 2020 Annual Campaign 2020: Canvassers Clinic

In light of the necessary precautions required during the pandemic, we had our Annual Campaign Kickoff Meeting/Canvasser Clinic using a unique and creative format. This year, we were excited to hold a super Zoom Conference. With the expertise and guidance of fundraiser extraordinaire, Laura Edwards, all our canvassers pushed aside any concerns and were motivated to start calling our donors.

Home is where people have been staying safe from COVID-19, and Home Is Where The Heart Is. Thank you so much to all our donors for answering your phones and making your pledges. Thanks for your ongoing support of the CHW Annual Campaign. This campaign is the lifeblood of our fundraising efforts to support all our projects; we could never do it without you!

The Vancouver Centre held our first ever ‘Zoom’ba event on Tuesday, June 4th. Our energetic certified Zumba instructor, Shadia Serrano, got us moving and sweating in this amazing workout.
