Proj_01. Campus Bookstore Design Rubik’s Cube : From Concept to Architecture (8 weeks) Instructor : Xi Shi
Edge blocks : 2-direction motion Corner blocks : 3-direction motion
Center blocks : Static motion
From concept to architecture is a junior studio course. Students choose a daily object, extract its internal logic and translate it into architectural space. The whole course lasts for 8 weeks and students need to complete individual work. I chose Rubik's cube as my research object and I found three kinds of concepts in the Rubik's cube: • Chaotic appearance with logical rules of motion • Three levels of hierarchical relations in the 26 blocks • square surface with sphere movement inside Finally, I corresponded the behavior of people looking for books in the library to twisting the Rubik's Cube, and the flow of people and books to the movement of the Rubik's Cube, creating a discrete and static reading space and a continuous dynamic search space.
Take the corner block as an example, the characteristic of Rubik's cube is that it can be disturbed according to certain rules, but it can be quickly restored
Use the motion of the corner blocks to generate a path
Similar results are omitted
We take the corner blocks as the moving object, enumerate all the possible trajectories and translate them into architectural spaces, including the discrete and static reading space, continuous dynamic search space and the nodes. Below is one of the paths.
Discrete and static reading space Nodes correspond to the corner blocks Continuous dynamic search space
Students’ flow Books’ flow
Finally, we connect human behavior and Book movement with the Rubik's cube space. People enter this seemingly disordered space through a staircase, randomly select books and enter the discrete and quiet reading space to read. And books are placed irregularly, people can randomly place and select, and finally put the books in the Book Recycling Area, so as to complete the process from chaos to integrity.

Beicai District
1979 started new factories around the docks
1979-1984 Dig canals to fight drought and waterlogging
1980s-1990s Residents moved in and started to build new houses
1994-2000 Broaden roads and built new residential areas
Location, History, and Housing type distribution
This subject is an urban renewal project for the senior year, located in the central city of Beicai Town, Pudong New District, Shanghai. Through the study of history, we find the changes of three types of communities in this area, and why the public service facilities present a zonal distribution. Through the renovation of the community boundaries, we hope that the originally isolated public facilities can be used by the communities on both sides, and the original functions will be optimized to realize the multiplication of functions. The preliminary investigation of the district is completed by the team, and the later renovation is completed by a group of three.
2000-2006 The government relocated & built public buildings
2006high-end residential buildings
The public service belt is formed according to the buried river
We found such a public service belt built by burying the river. By studying the boundaries of each separated community, we hope to reshape the service and realize the function multiplication. We changed the original function, reintegrated the space and built the isolated and scattered service facilities into a continuous open public space, so as to connect different communities to form a complete activity place

Hengzhang village is located in Songyang County, Zhejiang Province, China. It is a deep and remote mountainous ancient village. By studying the history of the village and visiting villagers, we formulated a village revitalization strategy and tried to renovate selected ancient buildings. We hope to attract young people to return to their hometowns to start businesses by exploring the potential labor of the left-behind elderly and combining the local characteristic aroma-making process to produce a local Chinese herbal aromatherapy handicraft. By creating employment opportunities, characteristic products and B&B, this remote ancient village will be revitalized. In the first eight weeks of the project, the group made a joint investigation and proposed the planning strategy. In the last eight weeks, a group of two selected several ancient buildings and carried out a renovation.
The Site Chosen
Site Plan
Before the Republic of China, there were frequent business contacts and prosperous economy and trade on the ancient road. At that time, the village was famous for its handmade incense making skills, and a large number of merchants would come to buy products through the ancient road.

Proj_04. ADD Sci-Arc Workshop Maya & 3D-printing & Graphic research (2 weeks) Instructor : Steven Ma
This is the first project of the ADD Sci-Arc Workshop. We spent a week learning to use Maya software, and through Maya to make a 3D printing lamp. In this project, I form a three-dimensional monomer by stretching and twisting a plane grid, and form the final lamp by copying and expanding the monomer. The final effect is unexpected. It is an individual work.

This is the second project of the ADD Sci-Arc Workshop. We're going to design a chair for 3D printing. My task is to study the internal filling of the printing. Since the robot arm prints like one-stroke motion, I thought of simulating the reflection of light to form a path similar to that.
Generate Skeleton
Make Reflection
Because the paths generated by light refraction are staggered, I hope to generate the internal skeleton of the graph through the algorithm, so as to divide the interior of the graph into directional paths, and then simulate the refraction of light.
