"I have combined the knowledge of my ancestral background and what I have learnt in the city by combining the two worlds in which I have lived, onto canvas. My paintings are a story of my life, my home, my family and country.”

Courthouse Youth Arts’ newly appointed Artist in Residence, Nathan Djerrkura, will be exhibiting his first solo show. Nathan’s artworks reflect his cultural heritage from his homeland of Buymarr in the Northern Territory. His indigenous ancestry can be traced back to the Yolngu people. Having retired from AFL Football in 2012 after stints with Geelong and Western Bulldogs, 26-year-

old Nathan has recently returned to Geelong from Yirrkala and is thrilled to have the opportunity as Artist in Residence to explore his passion for art while sharing his rich cultural heritage. 27th May–9th June Opening Night Wednesday 27th May, 6–8pm. FREE EVENT

DEFINE: PERFECTION

VISUAL ARTS

ARTWORK OF AINSLEY FOXX

12th–26th June Opening Night Friday 12th June, 6–8pm FREE EVENT

The works of Ainsley Foxx gravitate around the idea of ‘perfection’ and how its perception influences Western Society. While initially from Geelong, she has lived internationally in Germany and Thailand where different cultures challenged what was familiar. This sparked her artistic venture which developed into experimentation with many different mediums, beginning with photography, etching and silkscreening, until discovering her passion for ceramics. The main influence on Ainsley’s artwork came from her inquiry into what constitutes as ideal; coupled with detestation of prejudice, hypocrisy and injustice. Her work questions the constant struggles of women in Western culture, as unobtainable expectations of ‘perfect’ and ‘body-image’ are projected through the media which further the disintegration of self-worth. Ainsley was also drawn to question social phenomena such as homophobia, materialistic obsession and the importance of the superficial.

Patron to Pit is an exploration of the transition of a punter at a music festival to an established music photographer. Using music photography as an outlet to break every photographic rule imaginable throughout her time studying, Lucinda started her music photography journey at the age of 18. Fresh to both the live music scene and to photography, she explored her city throughout the dimly lit front bars and large venue halls. The exploration of capturing music performance and on stage portraiture has now been on going for 4 years, and Lucinda’s passion is still very much the art of capturing emotion and performance on stage. Lucinda’s portfolio leaves no stone unturned, collecting images like someone would collect a coin collection, From One Direction, Molly Meldrum, The Wiggles, Passenger, to Roxette, Jimmy Barnes, Bluesfest, and The Aria’s.

Courthouse Youth Arts proudly presents:

2015 will mark the inaugural year of the seasonal Winter Art Prize, which will showcase a number of emerging young artists committed to their creative practice. The prize of $5000 will go to one promising artist aged between 18-26 and is designed to further their artistic practice and career advancement. The award will significantly recognize the artist’s skill and commitment, and is intended to fund the artist to gain experience and inspiration from further afield for the artist to develop their practice. This personal development opportunity will inform the continued practice of the selected artist through cultural and artistic experiences in either a national or international destination.

DONNIE DARKO — THE DIRECTORS CUT.

Put on your stupid man suit and hope that the world doesn’t end, because this time around we’re bringing you the gloriously dark cult classic, complete with the 20 minutes of additional footage that had to be begrudgingly cut by the director for the commercial release. According to the Internet, Donnie Darko is “a funny, moving and distinctly mind-bending journey through suburban America, one extraordinary but disenchanted teenager is about to take Time’s Arrow for a ride. After surviving a freak accident, Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) begins to explore what it means to be alive, and in short order to be in love, he uncovers secrets of the universe that give him a tempting power to alter time and destiny.” And that, is when the world will end.

JAWS

DEAD POET’S SOCIETY

This feature thriller by Steven Spielberg was the anticipated follow up to his success with the similarly thrilling Duel, with which Spielberg stopped a whole generation from swimming in the water. The use of innovative, subtle film and sound techniques throughout this film paved the way for the new director to become a household name, and making the film a classic.

The Academy Award Nominated Australian Director, Peter Weir, proved that he can shoot more than just period pieces in this heart-wrenching film about an inspirational teacher (Robin Williams). The film that put Ethan Hawke on the map, explores the pressures of school and the importance of respecting culture. Make sure you bring tissues, because you’re going on a feel trip. WRITING

Even in a world full of voices, young artists of today can be voiceless. Spoken about as the world’s future, yet denied the right to talk, to be heard, and pushed to the shadows without any outlet to express them.

If you consider yourself a Wordsmith, or want to see your artwork published and distributed around Geelong, email an Expression of Interest to: collective@courthouse.org.au

Recognizing this, Courthouse Youth Arts bought out Fracture, giving writers and artists within Geelong the chance to be express themselves. A Bi-monthly poster showcasing up to four short stories and cover arts, giving them a chance to not only have their voices have an impact on the Geelong area, but also allowing their creative sides to be unleashed and no longer restrained.
