The philosophy of The New England School of English is to provide the best in English language and culture training: to provide an intellectually challenging program of the highest quality in a warm and supportive environment. In short, our goal is to provide an extraordinary opportunity to learn English.
The New England School of English: NESE
Our Philosophy
5
Why NESE...
Complete Linguistic and Cultural Immersion At NESE, students learn more than just language; they learn American culture as well. Our students succeed rapidly because intensive English language training combined with complete cultural immersion has proven to maximize language learning. At NESE, students attend intensive classes during the day and have the opportunity to go home to an American family homestay or a dormitory in the evening. All day, every day, our Intensive Program exposes students to American language and culture, providing an opportunity for the fastest language learning possible.
Excellent Teachers Because of its outstanding reputation, NESE attracts teachers who hold both undergraduate or advanced degrees from some of the top universities in the US, including Harvard, Yale, and Columbia. Regardless of where our teachers obtained their degrees, NESE teachers are dynamic professionals with exceptional teaching experience who have been selected to teach at NESE because of their high level of expertise and dedication.
Small Classes Our average class size is 12 students. Small classes ensure lively discussions, frequent student participation, and intensive student-teacher interaction.
Intensive and Semi-Intensive Programs Five Days per Week Students have a choice of participating in NESE’s Intensive Program from 9:00 to 3:15 each day or in NESE’s Semi-Intensive Program from 9:00 to 12:30 each day. Both programs offer 10 levels of language and culture training, full access to all NESE facilities, and a choice of either dormitory or homestay accommodation.
Elective and After-School Courses In addition to our Intensive and Semi-Intensive classes, students can choose Elective and After-School Courses to help them reach their goals more rapidly. Elective and After-School Courses include TOEFL® Preparation, Business English, Legal English, Workplace Communication, Pronunciation, and University Preparation. NESE’s advanced students can also take extra courses in their area of particular interest at Harvard Extension School and at other area colleges. Please know each college has its own specific admission requirements, fees, and schedules. (Five students must register in order for a NESE After-School Course to take place.)
Classes are fun because they are adapted to students’ interests. We debated a lot, laughed a lot, and learned a lot. I will come back next year. Pablo Nepomnaschy Anthropologist Argentina

Why NESE... Official Transcripts and Certificates At the end of every session, you will receive a NESE transcript that provides information about your English proficiency and academic achievement in each skill area. You will also receive a NESE Certificate of Attendance for participating in our program, and upon successful completion of NESE’s most advanced level, you will be awarded the NESE Diploma. Additionally, if you achieve academic excellence, you will be recognized as an “Honors Student”. A notation of this will appear on your official NESE transcript.
An Ideal City, An Ideal University Setting NESE is located adjacent to Harvard University in the center of Harvard Square in Cambridge. Harvard Square is a focal point of student activity and one of the most interesting and dynamic student centers in the United States. NESE is only 100 meters from the train and bus stations and 10 minutes from downtown Boston. We are also less than two hours away from great skiing, ocean sailing, and beautiful historic Cape Cod.
Flexible Schedule We offer intensive 4-week sessions beginning at 12 different times throughout the year. This means that you can start your English training at a time that best suits your schedule.
NESE helped me so much, not only in improving my English, but in having a different view of life. It was a great experience that I’ll never forget. I’ve had the best months of my life at NESE. Marilu Allemant Law Student Peru
Advanced Accommodation Arrangements Throughout the year, students can choose to live in an American family homestay or in a dormitory. Because NESE makes all housing arrangements before students leave their own country, whether students choose to live in a homestay or in a dormitory, they can go directly from the airport to their new home. NESE is pleased to make initial housing arrangements and our Housing Coordinator is always available to help students with their accommodation needs.

Why NESE...
A Program for Students Our intensive curriculum is specially designed to help students achieve their academic goals as rapidly as possible. In addition to our intensive classes, we offer a TOEFL® Preparation course, the Institutional TOEFL® exam each month, and a University Preparation course. We also offer extensive educational counseling and a university placement service, a university resource library to help students plan future studies in the United States, and admission into a wide range of universities without taking TOEFL®.
A Program for Professionals Because of the flexibility of the NESE curriculum, professionals can choose the classes they want to take. This is ideal for professionals whose work does not allow them to follow our intensive curriculum. In addition to our regular Intensive Program, private instruction and NESE Elective Courses are some of the options at NESE for professionals.
Free Counseling and Services Our range of free services is extensive: university counseling and placement, use of NESE computer facilities, unlimited use of NESE e-mail and the Internet, NESE transcripts and certificates, and counseling from our experienced representatives around the world.
Recognition by Harvard University Law School’s International Tax Program Until 2004, The International Tax Program at Harvard University’s Law School had a policy for their incoming international students who did not have the required TOEFL® score to enter their International Tax Program. These students were exempt from this requirement if they attended a top language program, and Harvard recognized NESE as a top school. Moreover, various schools within Harvard University, including the John F Kennedy School of Government and the Extension School have recommended NESE to interested fellows, their families, and students.
After one month at NESE, I had learned more English than I learned in one year in Brazil. Didimo Garcia Filho Businessman Brazil

Why NESE... The best teachers, the best location... I didn’t want to leave. Juan Carlos Montano Financial Manager Mexico

The NESE Curriculum
Intensive or Semi-Intensive Instruction Five Days per Week The NESE curriculum is divided into 10 levels of instruction. In each level, you attend classes from either 9:00 to 3:15 (the Intensive Program) or from 9:00 to 12:30 (the Semi-Intensive Program) every day. Additionally, depending on your own goals and needs, you may attend some of the Elective and After-School Courses we offer.
Complete Skills Assessment Whether you take NESE’s Intensive or Semi-Intensive Program, when you arrive at NESE, you will be given a complete assessment to determine your level in all the skill areas. The results of this assessment might indicate that you need to be placed into a different level for each skill, and the NESE curriculum easily accommodates that possibility. For example, if you can speak better than you can write, you will be placed into a higher level for speaking and a lower level for writing. Whichever your skill level, you can be certain that by the time you complete NESE’s most advanced level, you will be able to speak English with the fluency necessary to pursue your academic and professional goals successfully. If you arrive at NESE with the minimal knowledge of English, it will take approximately one year to complete the entire curriculum. If you already have some knowledge of English, we will place you into a level that ensures that you will learn English in the shortest possible time.
Maximum Exposure to Authentic Materials Although you are required to have textbooks for classes, and you will be given homework from them, you should be prepared for much more! In class, you will read newspapers and magazines, watch videos, role-play, do exercises in the computer lab, and interview Americans. The NESE curriculum is designed to give you maximum exposure to authentic materials as soon as possible. The result: you learn English as quickly as possible. LEVEL

TOEFL® Preparation This super-intensive course is designed to ensure that you will significantly increase your score on the iBT Next Generation TOEFL® exam. In class, you will receive an in-depth skill review, learn test-taking techniques, and take many practice exams to give you confidence when taking the iBT Next Generation TOEFL® exam. Because the classes are small, you will have an opportunity to concentrate on your own particular mistakes and improve your score. The Institutional TOEFL® exam is offered every month at NESE to all interested intermediate and advanced level students.
Business English In this intensive course, case studies and current domestic and international business situations are presented. Through texts, videos, and discussions, you will sharpen and refine your English language and business skills in areas such as business writing, marketing, strategic planning, finance, international business, and human resource development. The Harvard Management Update, Business Week, journal articles, and case studies as well as other current media are used throughout this class. Because NESE maintains special relationships with a number of MBA programs around the country, NESE students who are academically qualified are seen as strong candidates for these programs.
Elective Courses
In addition to NESE’s intensive curriculum, we offer the following Elective Courses and Private Instruction designed to help you accomplish your specific goals:
University Preparation This course will teach you how to prepare research and technical papers, theses, and dissertations to a standard expected by United States universities. You will learn how to use an American university library for research purposes, and these skills will help you complete your class assignment: a research paper complete with footnotes and bibliography.
Pronunciation This course is designed to give you extra practice and more self-confidence when speaking in both formal and informal situations. A special emphasis is placed on the needs of each individual in the group.
Legal English In this course, you will be introduced to the American judicial and legislative systems. You will become familiar with legal terminology, learn how to analyze cases, and also understand how legal documents are composed. In addition, you will view actual court proceedings through visiting real court rooms and/or watching videos.
Private Instruction Private instruction is one-to-one teaching that gives you the opportunity to focus on your specific goals, receive on-going correction and feedback, and gain intensive practice in your area of specific need. Because you will be the only student, you will have 100% of your teacher’s attention at all times and he will become an expert on your English strengths and weaknesses. Combined with group classes, private instruction gives you an ideal opportunity to enhance the fluency and accuracy of your English while concentrating on topics that most interest you.

A Program for Professionals I have always had my choice of the best English teachers in Korea. However, my teacher taught me more than any of my teachers in Korea; I learned more in her class than I ever had before. Jin Han Yoon, M.D., Ph.D. Medical Doctor Korea
12
Flexible Schedule Whether you work in business, science, law, or education, NESE recognizes that as a professional you have very specific needs. Thus, you have a choice of attending our regular Intensive Program or only attending classes that best suit your specific goals. In addition to our regular Intensive Program, Elective Courses and private instruction are options for professionals at NESE.
Excellent Teachers As a professional you appreciate being taught by professionals. Because of its reputation, NESE is able to attract teachers who hold degrees from Harvard, Yale, Columbia and other top universities. They are highly experienced, with proven teaching abilities. In fact, members of our academic staff are so well respected that they have been asked to provide training for other English teachers.
Classes with Other Professionals When you first arrive at NESE, you will take a placement test. Although you will be placed into the academic level that will provide you with the fastest learning possible, NESE realizes that this division is not enough. As a result, all classes at NESE are also subdivided according to age. This means that a professional at NESE will, therefore, have classmates who are similar to him: professionals who want to study in a serious environment that caters to their specific needs.
Professionals-Only Computer Lab, Lounge, and Dormitory NESE has a special executive area within our building which includes a private computer lab and a private lounge for NESE professionals to study and meet. The computer lab offers free high-speed Internet access, and because NESE is wireless, the use of laptop computers is possible throughout the building. NESE further provides special facilities to its professionals by offering a professionals-only dormitory – just a 12-minute walk from NESE.
Because many of our students are eager to prepare for entrance to a university or graduate school in the United States, we place special emphasis on providing students with the skills and guidance they need to attain their educational goals. In addition to our Elective Courses, TOEFL® Preparation, Institutional TOEFL®, and University Preparation, NESE provides many services to help prospective university students:
NESE University Advisor A counselor who specializes in American university admissions will work closely with you to help you understand the American university application procedure. NESE’s counselor will discuss your academic goals to ensure that your needs and abilities match those required by the academic institution of your choice.
Meeting with University Admissions Staff University admissions officers are always interested in visiting NESE to meet with students and to answer their questions. As a result, NESE regularly holds university and college information sessions, and invites a different school to each session. These sessions provide students with an ideal opportunity to learn more about a program that they might be considering and to meet admissions staff directly.

University Resource Library A resource library of current university catalogs and guides and a large computer database about applying to American colleges is available for your use at all times. In addition, you will find many guides and practice tests for standardized exams such as GMAT®, GRE®, SAT®, and LSAT®.
Admission to University without TOEFL® NESE has special relationships with a number of universities and colleges in the Boston area and across the United States. These relationships make it possible for NESE students to apply and be accepted to a college or university without taking the official TOEFL® exam (and in some cases without taking the SAT®). Depending on the individual university or college, there are two ways in which NESE students can replace the official TOEFL® exam. Students can either: u

Life at NESE
A Warm Welcome Because all teaching, counseling, and activities at NESE happen in a warm and supportive environment, you will feel welcomed from the moment you arrive. NESE’s welcome will continue to be demonstrated throughout your stay by all our teachers and staff. They will answer your questions and provide any guidance and assistance you may need. They will be supportive and encourage you to discover new places, meet new people, and try new things. NESE is more than just an English school; it is your family in the United States.
Orientation Program During your first week at NESE, we will introduce you to your new life in the United States through our Orientation Program. During this orientation period, we will teach you what you need to know about daily life so that your transition to NESE, Harvard Square, and Boston will be easy.
Meeting Americans One of the most frequent questions we hear is, “How can I meet Americans?” NESE understands that you have chosen to study English in the United States because meeting Americans and experiencing their way of life and culture is as important to you as learning English. From “on the street” interviews to our guest speaker and community volunteer programs, NESE has carefully designed its curriculum both to maximize your contact with Americans and to fully immerse you in their rich and diverse culture.
Because of NESE’s weekend trips, learning English at NESE was more than just a classroom experience: I practiced my English out of class and made new friends. Murat Karpat Restauranteur Turkey
14
To further enhance your contact with Americans and their culture, NESE regularly invites guest speakers to the school to talk about a wide variety of interesting topics. One of NESE’s most popular lectures is by a group of Harvard students who present a conversation forum on American culture and current events. In this interactive debate, you will share ideas, make friends, and practice your new English language skills. Other popular lecturers include professionals in business, science, government, and the arts.
Trips Throughout the Boston Area NESE takes students on trips to Boston’s museums, university lectures, theaters, and sporting events, as well as to the area’s famous historical sites. You will be amazed by the size of the whales on our whale watching trips and the magnificence of The Mayflower on our trips to Plymouth Plantation (one of the first villages in the United States). You will cheer on the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics, and you will practice your skiing on Mt. Sunapee’s black diamond slopes (or learn how to ski on the bunny slopes) in New Hampshire.
Life at NESE
Guest Speakers
Weekend Trips NESE frequently arranges weekend trips. You will ski down the slopes of New Hampshire’s White Mountains in winter, visit the beauty of Montréal, Canada in summer, experience the excitement of Washington, D.C. and New York City in spring, and much more. On all these trips, you will learn many things about the United States, its people, and the regional culture of New England.
I didn’t know that a school could be this good. Adriana Amat, D.D.S. Dentist Colombia

Housing
Because the last thing you want to worry about is your housing, NESE makes all housing arrangements BEFORE you leave your country. This means that you can arrive early and go directly from the airport to your accommodations. Then, on registration day, you will already know the area better, and you will be relaxed for the first day of your program. At NESE, it is our pleasure to arrange students’ housing and support their stay in every way possible.
If You Want to Live in a Homestay NESE’s American homestay program is designed to provide cultural exposure to American family life in a warm and supportive environment. It is your home away from home. Your homestay family will provide you with friendship, care, and an ideal opportunity to use your English and experience American culture. NESE carefully selects all homestay families, and NESE host families have a great deal of experience hosting foreign students. Often our families introduce students to new activities. You might learn to water-ski in Maine, sail in Cape Cod, or ski in Vermont. Whatever parts of New England you and your family explore, you can be sure that you will remain friends with them for years to come.
If You Want to Live in a Dormitory Living in a homestay gave me a wonderful opportunity to meet Americans. I will keep my American family in my heart forever. Hamad Al-Dosari Diplomat Qatar
16
Throughout the year, you can live in a dormitory. Living in the dormitory will provide you with a unique opportunity to make friends with other students your own age and to experience Boston life at its best. Pizza nights, video nights, and picnics on the Charles River are all part of student life in these dormitories. As a dormitory resident, you will participate in all of these activities with a diverse and interesting group of people. NESE has three dormitories, one for younger students (Green Hall), one for mid-age students (Poppet Hall), and one for professionals (Lee Hall). All dormitories are located only 15 minutes from NESE near the campuses of Harvard and MIT. All dormitories offer students either single or double rooms, full linen and cleaning service, and breakfast and dinner every day of the week.
NESE has made special arrangements for its students to use the Fitness Center at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), one of the most famous universities in the United States. Located only one subway stop from NESE (and a short walk from Green Hall), the MIT Fitness Center offers a 50-meter swimming pool, personal training, and a wide range of events and activities. Students can use the Nautilus machines, take aerobic classes, and play basketball and soccer. MIT Fitness Center members can also arrange to take CPR and first aid classes. Students must have a NESE ID card to use the MIT Fitness Center and an extra fee is required.

Anna Shine, Ed.M., Harvard University President of NESE Anna Shine, a successful and popular educator, holds a Master’s degree in Education from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan. Her experience includes teaching and directing English language programs in both the United States and Europe. She also developed and directed the English language program at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital. Ms. Shine is British but she has lived in the United States (Hawaii, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Massachusetts), Europe (Germany, France, England, Scotland, Wales), South America (Argentina and Brazil), and the South Atlantic Ocean (St. Helena) during the past 30 years. As a result, she is particularly sensitive to the problems, both linguistic and cultural, that a foreigner may have. And she knows personally why it is so important to understand a culture to learn its language. Ms. Shine brings to NESE a commitment to maintain the best possible learning environment: one that is always challenging, enjoyable, and entirely supportive to students.
When I first arrived, I was amazed. Anna’s office was always open for all students to walk into at any time. She would encourage us, explain to us, and laugh with us. Her warmth is everywhere. Martine Amiot, Ph.D. Biologist Monaco
Martha Hall, Ed.M., Harvard University Director of NESE Martha Hall was trained at Harvard University in its renowned Graduate School of Education. In sum, Ms. Hall’s international experiences have provided her with wide access to the most innovative and effective teaching methods. As a result, Ms. Hall remains a tremendous resource to all students, teachers, and staff at NESE.

Our Location
Harvard Square: Our Location NESE is located in Harvard Square in Cambridge, adjacent to Harvard University and just a few minutes’ walk from the Charles River. Harvard Square is a focal point of student activity and one of the most interesting and dynamic student centers in the United States. “The Square,” ideally suited for students’ needs and recreation, is surrounded by cafés, restaurants, bookshops, and boutiques. University lectures are only a few steps away, classic and current films are just across the street, theaters and concerts are just around the corner, and music is on the street and in the parks. Whatever your interests, you can pursue them in Harvard Square.
Cambridge: An Exciting University City Cambridge and Boston are America’s largest centers for students and young professionals. During the academic year (September through May), there are more than 300,000 students in this area. The city of Cambridge is the home of two of the world’s finest universities, Harvard University and MIT. Few other places in the United States provide students with such an exciting blend of culture, tradition, and history–and English teachers–in the context of a dynamic contemporary lifestyle. I loved Boston, and Harvard Square is the perfect place for students. It is energetic and beautiful at the same time. Claudia Serio Law Student Italy
