Mondays About Face: Portraits CEPT 100 00 September 10–October 29 6:30–9:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This course is an exploration in the history and art of portraiture. Learn to open your eye and steady your hand! In this course focus on rendering skills, while also exploring creative ways to interpret personality and expression. From realistic model drawing/painting to more abstracted methods of representation, this course is great for both practice and trying new things. All levels from beginners to portraitists are welcome! This adult class also welcomes students in grades 10–12. Melissa Harris Beginning Painting CEPT 110 00 September 10–October 29 6:30–9:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 In this introductory painting course students will learn the fundamental techniques and processes of painting with acrylic paint. Class projects will target basic painting principles and guide students to develop a better understanding of tools and materials, acrylic paint and mediums, basic color theory, and two-dimensional design concepts. Discussions, demonstrations, and handouts will provide students with valuable resources to facilitate good painting practices and artistic growth. Susan Danko
Creating Comics in a Digital Environment CEIL 150 00 September 10–October 29 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Students will learn how to create a comic book from script to finish using a Wacom Cintiq touch screen tablet and Photoshop. Lessons will include teaching how to work with a writer, storyboarding out your comic, composing with digital pencils and inks, and coloring techniques. By the conclusion of the course, students will have their own 12–24 page comic to share with the world. This adult class also welcomes students in grades 10–12. Len Peralta Introduction to Printmaking: Screenprinting, Relief, and Monotype CEPM 120 00 September 10–October 29 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $345 Learn the basics of three unique printmaking processes: screenprinting, relief, and monotype. Fundamental techniques will be covered, including carving and printing linoleum blocks, exposing images to screens, printing, and color mixing. Prints will be created both by hand and with a press. We will also explore mixing these different techniques to create wonderfully layered images. Open to all, this is a great course for anyone interested in making beautiful prints by hand. This course is being offered as a process sampler, allowing students an introductory experience to printmaking, and will also support those students who would like to build upon previous printmaking experiences. Tuesdays Creative Stone Setting CEJM 200 00 September 18–November 6 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $370 This class will help students understand how to apply traditional stone-setting techniques— peg, bezel, and prong setting—in nontraditional ways. Using non-standard gemstones, minerals, and/or found objects as both the “stones” to be set and design inspiration, students will create three objects or pieces of jewelry. Emphasis will be placed on the aesthetics afforded by each type of setting. Students will benefit from some metalworking experience when fabricating the settings, but the object/jewelry in which the “stones” will be set can be created from any material students are comfortable with. Sydney Givens Pleated Paper Sculptures CEFM 275 00 September 11–October 30 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 In recent decades, the age-old art of paper folding has taken on a number of new and interesting forms that deviate from its traditional, Japanese roots. Abstract and geometric based origami such as tessellations and corrugation folding yield stunning results, made all the more impressive considering they can be crafted simply from folding a single, un-cut sheet of material. The intricacy of such designs can range from simple to highly complex. This course will delve into the non-representational realm of folding, leaving students with experience in: basic tessellation folding; advanced pleating methods, and the creation of elegant spiral forms with paper. We will also examine different ways these techniques can be applied as design elements in other mediums such as installation art, architecture, photography, book making, and much more. This painting course will help guide you toward developing individual ideas within your own personal work, while broadening your painting vocabulary and skills. Demonstrations will be provided to outline concepts and techniques that may be utilized as you create your paintings. Group and individual critiques will provide additional input and guidance in conveying your ideas and making strong independent work. Developing the ability to work at an independent level will be our goal. Susan Danko
Watercolor landscapes will introduce the foundations of working with watercolor paints in the studio environment. Watercolor painting makes use of transparent washes and in doing so allows for a bright image. A painting made with watercolor paints uses the white paper as a mirror to reflect and capture a luminous quality. Topics discussed and demonstrated in class are color theory, paint application, painting techniques, and paint manipulation. Each example will incorporate a new color theory lesson and a painting technique. You will be shown how to paint elements found in the landscape such as skies, rural and cosmopolitan environments, trees, and water. Many small quick paintings and fast dry time permits for a wide range of tricks and topics to explore. Almost all paintings are guided with a step by step process from beginning to end. Both group and individual attention will aid in your painting’s focus and direction. The beginner and novice painter are encouraged.
Underground Comix CEIL 300 00 September 11–October 30 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Underground Comix is an introductory course in the counterculture comix of the 1960s−80s and their continued evolution into the indie comics that exist today. In addition to learning about historical context and prominent artists, participants will explore techniques that will aid in the creation of their own penciled, inked, and colored comic page or 8-page mini comic (a popular underground presentation format). The course will feature an emphasis on page layouts, tactile pen and ink rendering techniques, digital coloring, self-publishing and printing, and will encourage students to embrace all things grotesque, ugly, and weird. This adult class also welcomes students in grades 10–12. Nathan Ward
Terry Clark Wheel Throwing: Beginning + Advanced CECR 200 00 September 11–October 30 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $345 Learn how to throw on the potter’s wheel! Students can choose from rustic stoneware clay or smooth white porcelain. Beginners will learn to make basic forms like cylinders, bowls, and mugs on the wheel. Using colored slips and glaze, inlay, texture, and carving you will learn various ways to finish your creations. Students with throwing experience will get one-on-one instruction and help in developing their own personal projects. Feel free to bring sketches, drawings, or any inspiration for your projects. You will need basic pottery tools, an apron, a towel, and plastic to cover your pots (dry cleaning bags are best). Clay and tools are available in class for purchase. Amy Halko
Wednesdays Cloisonné Enamel: Color Between the Wire CEJM 275 00 September 12–October 31 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $370 Enamel is the practice of fusing powdered glass to a metal surface. This course focuses on cloissonné, an enamel technique that utilizes thin ribbons of wire in order to create separate fields of enamel color. This course will provide students with the opportunity to explore the potential of cloissonné enamel through the creation of an independent project and a variety of samples. Alyson Hollobough Designing Illustrative Type CEIL 250 00 September 12–October 31 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This course will explore the expressive connection between type and illustration. Students will begin by learning how to create initial letters from basic geometric forms. From there you’ll add illustrative qualities to each letter, and as a final result will design a unique alphabet that will enable you to create customized words and sentences. Each class will have a brief lecture and demo, with the remainder of the class as work time. This course will utilize Adobe Illustrator, and requires a basic understanding of the Adobe Creative suite. Students will do at-home research between classes to get the most out of this course. Experimental Projects in Ceramics CECR 700 00 September 12–October 31 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $345 Have you ever wanted to try out handbuilding techniques in your clay studio? Or are you eyeing an experimental glaze combination, or want to get reps in on the wheel? In this course ceramic students will have the opportunity to focus on a specific project or technique, with guidance from an instructor. As a material, clay provides endless possibilities for exploration; this is the perfect place to test those methods and create something truly unique. Propose a project to develop throughout the course using the resourceful, open-studio environment of the CIA ceramics facilities. Please bring in sketches of your proposed project and inspirations on the first day of class. Please bring dry-cleaning or garbage bags for covering your works-in-progress. Thursdays Abstract + Experimental Drawing CEDR 315 00 September 13–November 1 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Get inspired and draw like you’ve always wanted. This class will encourage you to see the world and your work with new eyes. Students will work with a variety of drawing tools such as pencils, conte crayons, markers, felt tip pens, pastels, and willow charcoal to learn key techniques and concepts that will develop your appreciation and skills in non-representational drawing. The course will pull inspiration from an eclectic array of sources, including modern artists (Klee, Miro, and Kandinsky), YouTube videos, and avant garde film. David Verba Abstract Painting CEPT 350 00 September 13–November 1 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Abstract painting is a conscious breakaway from traditional realistic painting. This class introduces concepts and techniques used by the masters of abstraction. Three different artists will influence the class direction. The artists for the fall session are: Mark Rothko, Bridget Riley, and Roy Lichtenstein. Ideas discussed and practiced in class include: color as subject, painting as object, and multiple process applications. In the studio, we will work together toward our goals. Two paintings are made from each reference artist. The first painting is small in scale, simple, and is considered a study or investigation piece. The second painting is large in scale, complex, and is considered a final or finished piece. All of the paintings aim to visually emulate specific styles. Acrylic paint application and color mixing will be presented through instructor demonstrations. Terry Clark

In this class you will learn how to create a simple animation using a combination of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. Each student will start out by creating a storyboard for their animation to plan the narrative and various shots. You will then create a scene and character in Photoshop and learn how to construct elements using basic tools and layers. In After Effects we’ll learn how to add movement, sound and other special effects. Each student will leave with a finished 30-second animation. Working knowledge of Photoshop required. Software and computers are provided by CIA. This adult class is also open to students in grades 10–12.
Students of all levels, join us in the Glass Studio on Thursdays! Beginners, starting with the bubble, will learn ways to develop blown forms out of glass, while intermediate/advanced students explore more specific forms and ideas. Each class will add a different type of blown form to try; however, you will be encouraged to bring ideas of shapes and forms that you would like to blow. Wear natural fiber clothing (jeans and long sleeves recommended), closed toe shoes and safety glasses. This adult class is also open to students in grades 10–12.
Adri Nerone Developing your Visual Voice CEFD 210 00 September 13–November 1 6:30–9:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This course will allow new and seasoned artists to develop artwork that helps you communicate your individual point of view and narratives based on your life experiences. With an emphasis on learning from other contemporary artists and pulling content from research topics of interest, students will develop a small body of work that considers both the personal and universal, while exploring psychological, emotional, spiritual or social narratives that are significant to you. Students may come with their medium of choice, whether it be drawing, painting, mixed media, or small sculptural form, all by approval of the instructor. Working through your thoughts on paper, canvas, or another medium will open you up to realizations about your own point of view and how to communicate a message visually. JenMarie Zeleznak
Shayna Pentecost Steel Fabrication: MIG Welding CESC 150 00 September 13–November 1 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $400 This course will function as an introductory level overview of basic MIG welding and steel fabrication techniques. The first three weeks of the class will focus on fundamental projects where students will become familiar with the processes and tools for working with steel. In the final five weeks students will work on an individual project that they propose based on the principles and techniques covered. Morning Classes Advanced Cartooning Grades 8–12 YAIL 400 00 9:30am–12:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Do you know a kid who loves comics and cartoons? In this course, we’ll examine the more technical side of cartooning—both visually and conceptually. We will explore the history of cartooning—with emphasis on Cleveland’s role in the legacy. Students will learn professional standards and practices. We will work individually and collaborate in groups. This advanced cartooning class is meant for any kids who take comics seriously. Josh Usmani Beyond iPhoneography Grades 9–12 YAPH 200 00 9:30am–12:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Mobile photography and video are powerful tools for creating original digital content. Explore select apps designed for capturing, creating, workflow, editing, and producing immersive digital content. Learn how to create, integrate, and leverage your digital content into specific social media platforms that enhance, develop, and communicate your personal brand and artistic visions. Creative Clay Studio Grades 6–10 YACR 350 00 9:30am–12:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $250 Explore your imagination by creating sculpture and pottery through the use of this tactile material. You will learn the skills of handbuilding and working on the potter’s wheel as you develop and translate your ideas into three-dimensional works of art. You will finish off your creations with high temperature (2350° F) glazes that will be fired off in our professional kilns. High school students have the opportunity to develop their portfolios for high school or college admission. Be prepared to get messy! Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear (old t-shirts and sneakers are best; no open-toed shoes). All skill levels are welcome. Eleni DiMaio Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop Grades 5–8 YAPH 100 00 9:30am–12:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $225 This class will encourage creativity through photography. You will be introduced to key elements of photography including portraits, landscapes, composition, and more. Through experimentation and demonstrations you will create images and begin to understand the medium as an art form. Students will then take their images to the computer lab and learn to alter them using Photoshop: cropping, light balance, color editing, and more. Emphasis will be placed on enjoyment, fun, and creativity. Please bring your own camera—any point-andshoot model will do. Nicole Bozickovich
Drawing Beyond the Pencil Grades 5–8 YAFD 215 00 9:30am–12:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $225 Sharpen your drawing skills and expand your artistic horizons using a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials. You will take your drawing abilities to a whole new level with projects designed to expand the application of fundamental drawing practices in new ways. We will establish the importance of keeping sketchbooks to practice, plan, and communicate creative ideas. Through inspirational field trips to University Circle institutions like the Cleveland Museum of Art and class discussion, we will address the question of looking versus seeing as essential to the creative processes of the visual artist. Students of all skill levels are welcome to explore a variety of media and techniques to create artwork beyond the boundaries of what we commonly know as “drawing.” Modified projects will provide repeat students a new experience every time. Candice Dangerfield Emerging Artists Grades 6–9 YAFD 125 00 9:30am–12:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $225 A fun overview course designed to allow each student to explore a variety of media, techniques and methods. Projects focus on introducing and developing the elements of art (line, form, color, value, texture) and principles of design (balance, variety, harmony). We will examine some of the masters in painting as well as architecture. Projects will include engraving, Picasso-style self portraits, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie-style windows. Students will learn about the importance of creating an artist statement for their work. Understanding and appreciation of self and others through art, history, culture and heritage is emphasized. Drawing Beyond the Pencil II Grades 6–9 YAFD 245 00 1–4pm 8 sessions Cost: $225
This course will guide you through the basics of observational drawing to create polished and finished pieces that you can add to your portfolio. You’ll utilize different drawing materials and processes, from portraits, to figure drawing, to contour drawing. We will also practice critiquing our work in a constructive, fun and informative way. The goal of this course is to help you reach a higher level of skill in the creation of your own artwork. Students under 18 years old will need parent permission for the figure drawing session.
Students will learn the basics of creating their own short stop motion animation, including film language, shot types, storyboarding, shooting an animation, and editing. To get inspired we’ll watch a variety of different types of stop motion animations in class. Each student will then construct a set and characters out of mixed media, clay and armatures. Students will work in our computer lab with Adobe Premier to add sound and other special effects to their piece. At the end of class each student will have a finished animation saved on a flash drive to take home. Students must bring their own digital camera and tripod to class. No previous knowledge of Adobe Premier necessary. Software and computers provided by CIA.
Through visits to the Cleveland Museum of Art we will explore concepts of abstraction varying from that of Surrealist artists like Dalí, Miró, and Magritte; Cubist artists such as Picasso or Braque, Impressionists such as Degás and Monét; and Pop and Modern artists Andy Warhol and Chuck Close. Projects will include multimedia collage to create Cubisminspired art, abstracted portraiture like Roualt, Modigliani, and Van Gogh; and action painting like Jackson Pollock. Explore, enrich, and expand your perceptions to create artwork that inspires and encourages new ways of seeing things. This is a great first art class for middle schoolers, or follow up class for students who have taken Drawing Beyond the Pencil.

Eddie Mitchell Sewing for Beginners Grades 9–12 YAFM 210 00 9:30am–12:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 In this course you will learn the basics of hand sewing and machine sewing. Students will practice basic techniques by first making alterations to old clothes, turning something worn into something new by adding or subtracting elements. We will review pattern making by creating a unique stuffed animal or plush, then by creating a new piece of clothing from a pattern. At the end of the class you will take the knowledge that you have gained and come up with one final project that combines all of the techniques and processes you’ve learned. No prior sewing knowledge necessary, come with sketches and ideas, and plan to bring clothes to alter! Eriana Hargrove

Digital Cartooning is a studio course designed to introduce young, aspiring cartoonists to professional digital tools, such as: iMacs, Adobe Creative Cloud and Wacom drawing tablets. This unique class offers students the opportunity to improve both narrative storytelling and digital art and design skills. Intro to Digital Cartooning is designed to build upon the lessons of Cartooning 101 and Advanced Cartooning, but there is no prerequisite to this course and students don’t need any prior Mac or Photoshop experience. This course focuses on the fundamentals of digital art by teaching the basics of working in a digital environment. Students will learn to navigate Photoshop as a drawing tool, learn how to create brushes and tools to help speed up their workflow and also create several digital projects to practice their skillset. Computers and software are provided, and a general knowledge of Photoshop is encouraged.
Learn the fundamental skills needed to create jewelry and small metalwork. You’ll use copper and brass to create samples in sawing, filing, stamping, casting, soldering, and finishing. Students will propose a final project which will be completed by the end of the class. Projects could include bracelets, earrings, rings, necklaces, or small metal sculptures. These can be made in sterling silver at an extra cost, if desired. Open to beginners as well as intermediate students. More advanced students will be encouraged to work on independent projects. Most materials are included in the cost of the class, additional materials may be purchased through the instructor.
This course involves the study, experimentation, and production of multimedia art pieces incorporating painterly printmaking processes. Students will investigate hands on printmaking techniques that do not require the use of a printing press. A main aspect of this course is conceptual development through the process of play and critical discussion. Come ready to experiment!
Len Peralta Intro to Interior Architecture Grades 9–12 YAIN 100 00 1–4pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Students will explore interior design and architecture through concepting, brainstorming ideas, and designing spaces for specified activities. Students will devise a site plan for a venue of their choice (for example, a school campus, sports facility, or museum complex) and focus on various areas within the site plan. This class will utilize both traditional handdrawn drafting skills as well as computer aided drawing skills. This is a great class for any aspiring interior architect or designer to learn about the tools of the trade. Katherine Hungate

Sydney Givens Making Your Mark with Nature Grades 5–8 YAFD 145 00 1–4pm 8 sessions Cost: $225 Learn to use found objects in nature such as foliage, grasses, leaves, and other botanicals to develop your visual expression and sense of self! Nature has many templates to explore, and using tools from the outdoors, students will explore authentic and unique mark making. Students will share and add each week to their artists journals, venture outside (weather permitting!), and will complete a final projects of abstract self-portraits. Valerie Buynak

The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque shows exceptional movies most Thursdays through Sundays in CIA’s new, state-ofthe-art Peter B. Lewis Theater. These are films you won’t see any place else in greater Cleveland—an eclectic mix of the new and the classic, American and international, all superbly presented in gorgeous film or digital prints, on the big screen with digital surround sound. Approximately 250 movies are presented every year, so there’s something for all tastes and films change weekly. For the current schedule, visit cia.edu/cinematheque. Those who enroll in CIA Continuing Education classes receive the same discount to film screenings that Cinematheque members and CIA staffers do. (Just show your registration form at the box office.) Emma Anderson is a Cleveland-based painter/multimedia artist. She earned her MFA degree from Kent State University School of Art in 2018. Prior to this she earned her BFA degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2016. Emma has exhibited her work nationally as well as internationally. Most recently she completed her solo exhibition “If She Could Relax, Don’t You Think She Would,” at Kent State’s CVA gallery in 2018. In 2017, she had work exhibited in the 8th annual Painting and Mixed Media Exhibition at Lessedra Gallery in Sofia, Bulgaria. This summer Emma will be traveling to Colorado to participate in a printmaking workshop at Anderson Ranch Art Center. Jody Amsden earned a BFA in Architectural Design from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2007, and she has worked at several Top 100 interior design firms, including Fitch (Columbus), Interbrand DesignForum (Dayton), MillerZell (Atlanta), and Vocon (Cleveland). Combining an enthusiasm for art and an affinity for young artists, this marks her second summer as an instructor in CIA’s PreCollege Program. In addition to her teaching post at CIA, Jody is currently working with Fitzgibbons Design as a freelance designer. She is a past recipient of the Albert K. Murray Scholarship for Academic Excellence at CIA. Nicole Bozickovich, Photography major ’14, has focused on her interests—photography and childhood education. She has taught art to children in the Freedom Schools program at the East Cleveland Neighborhood Center, as well as photographed concerts for Live Nation, which published some of her work on its website. Her BFA Thesis show at CIA focused on photographing objects used to abuse children and bringing awareness to child abuse. She currently is the art instructor at STEAM Academy of Akron teaching art to grades K–5. She hopes to continue to grow with children and teach them art as well as support the community and local charter schools in the greater Cleveland area. Valerie Buynak received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1991 and her MFA from Kent State University in 2017. Her work reflects elements of nature in various life cycles to explore visual expression of absence and presence.
Leandro Castelao is an Argentinean graphic designer and illustrator. After completing studies at the University of Buenos Aires and teaching typography and illustration at his alma mater, he relocated to NYC to expand his career. His unique visual style has been recognized by Communication Arts and American Illustration, and has won him a nomination in the 2014 Latin Grammy’s for best package design. Terry J. Clark II earned his MFA in Painting from Kent State University in 2004 and his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2002. Terry’s artwork has been featured at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ingenuity Festival, CSU Art Gallery, and is included in the MetroHealth art collection. Terry has taught studio art classes at both Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Institute of Art since 2008. Terry paints with both acrylic and watercolor paints. He also makes sculpture from found objects. His subject matter inspiration comes from earth science and the natural environment. The concepts of natural light, optics, and color are reoccurring themes found in his artwork. Candice Dangerfield teaches individual and small group classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Botanical Garden, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, at her studio in Elyria, and the Cleveland Institute of Art. She has a BFA in Drawing & Painting from BGSU, foundations from CIA, and Art Education licensure from Notre Dame College in Ohio. Candice’s artwork has been recognized regionally and nationally. Most recently awarded “Best in Show” in Shaker Heights, her other exhibitions include: the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, and The Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C. Susan Danko received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1998 and has a successful career as a fine art painter. She is a 2013 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award recipient. Her work is included in prominent art collections including the Cleveland Clinic, the Ohio Arts Council, and First Energy Corporation. Susan is represented by Bonfoey Gallery in Cleveland. Eleni DiMaio is a ceramic artist living and working in Cleveland, Ohio. Originally from Rhode Island, DiMaio graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art and fell in love with Cleveland and has lived here eleven years now. During her time at CIA she received a Viktor Schreckengost award for excellence in ceramics. She is a member of the Northern Ohio Clay Guild as well as Brick Ceramics in Collinwood. Her current work is attempting to draw attention to the beauty of ceramic materials by creating jewelry and housewares that are simple, graceful, and strong. Sydney Givens is pursuing a BFA in Jewelry + Metals at CIA. She has co-chaired the Student Holiday Sale, assisted with a PreCollege course, exhibited at the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center, and participated in CIA’s annual fashion show. Sydney currently works at Sands Company Jewelers. Before she moved to Cleveland, she helped teach children’s art classes at the Carnegie Museum of Art and served as a personal assistant to Pittsburgh jeweler Diane Wilson. Her primary areas of interest are sculptural jewelry and functional objects that involve raw materials, geometric forms, and experimental processes. Peter Green is originally from southern Ohio and studied Drawing at Cleveland State and Illustration at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He specializes in figures and portraits, utilizing traditional media and techniques. He has shown his work in galleries nationally and has been featured in various publications. He is a member of the International Guild of Realism and the Portrait Society. He currently teaches Foundation Drawing at CIA. Amy Halko is a studio potter with a BFA from Bowling Green State University and MFA from The Ohio State University, she has taught at Southern Methodist University, Eastfield College, community education classes, a number of workshops, and was a visiting artist at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdhezhen, China. In 2006 Amy spent the summer as a resident at The Archie Bray Foundation, an internationally recognized center for the advancement of ceramic art. She is a cofounder of The Dallas Pottery

Invitational and Clay Wood Cloth. Amy’s work is in several collections and is shown nationally. Eriana Hargrove is a Cleveland native who studied Sculpture + Expanded Media at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Her main focus is fabrics and textiles. In her time at the college, she taught many students how to sew and use the application of sewing to construct patterns and alterations while running open studios for the SEM department. Eriana uses textiles and fabrics in making items for everyday life as well as soft sculpture. Melissa Harris has taught for CIA’s Continuing Education program for 8 years. Graduating from Cleveland State University with a BA in Studio Arts, Melissa continues to stay active in the Cleveland art scene. She has shown her work in galleries throughout the Cleveland area including Doubting Thomas, Serefino, Walleye, and the gallery at Cleveland State. Her work has also hung at many establishments throughout the area including La Cav du Vin in Coventry and the Lyndhurst Courthouse. She continues to work out of her home studio where she also provides private lessons. Alyson Hollobough is a 2018 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, with a BFA in Jewelry + Metals. During her time at CIA she worked as a Departmental Assistant in the Jewelry + Metals Department and participated in the Creativity Works internship program, where she worked with a Cleveland based Rotary District. Hollobaugh’s interests include traveling, literature, and baking. Kara Hungate graduated from the Cleveland Instiute of Art in 2010 with a BFA in Interior Design. Kara has been running an interior design business, Kara Hungate design, as well as teaching at the K–12 level. She educates her clients on materials, products, processes, and brands while introducing them into her projects. As a fine artist, Kara also shows artwork privately and in local organizations.
Rachel Latina is a lifelong Clevelander and a seasoned veteran of the local arts community. Her paintings have been featured in individual and group exhibitions throughout Northeast Ohio for the past ten years. A multidisciplinary artist, Latina also has ten years-worth of experience as a senior graphic designer, but currently splits her time between a digital and traditional studio practice and freelancing as a graphic designer for various clients. Both her traditional and digital paintings feature dynamic portraiture of strong, unique female subjects, with a healthy dose of American pop culture and Japanese street fashion. A collection of her diverse work can be viewed at rachellatina.com Lynne Norwood Lofton received her BS in Art Education from Northern Illinois University and after moving to Ohio, attended the Cleveland Institute of Art in the Ceramics program. She has been a ceramic artist and teacher for over 35 years, exhibiting in galleries throughout the Midwest. Sixteen years ago, Lynne founded TerraVista Studios in the Cleveland Arts Quarter, and has been working there ever since. Eddie Mitchell received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in painting and drawing in 1987 with a top traveling scholarship award. Eddie has taught art classes at Lakeland Community College for the past 22 years. At CIA, he has facilitated the evening life drawing classes, taught the Pre-College summer program, and the Portfolio Preparation class since 2009. He has maintained a full-time studio for the past 28 years. His work is represented in several galleries across the country. Eddie has been in over 150 art shows, created numerous commissioned pieces for public locations, and has sold over 1,000 paintings. Adri Nerone is an artist who creates freeform crochet tapestries, distorted photo collages and sculptures, and experimental videos and animations. She received her BFA in Technology and Integrated Media from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 2007. Her work has shown at Heights Arts, The Gallery at Lakeland Community College, Reinberger Gallery, Front Room Gallery, and Forum Art Space. She has also shown work in film festivals like Video Fall Out, Standing Rock International Film Fesival,
Athens International Film Festival and Akron Film + Pixel Short Attention Span Film Fest. She has done freelance video editing and animation work for production studios and has taught many digital arts and stop motion animation classes at a variety of institutions. See her work at adrijanana.wordpress.com James W. Peake, Oberlin College graduate, is an artist, educator and community organizer who lives and works in Oberlin, Ohio. James founded the FAVA Folding Festival, which includes a gallery exhibition featuring elite origami artists from around the globe, and free public workshops. As an active member of the international folding community, James regularly attends origami conferences throughout the world. His collaborative efforts include extensive work with the Allen Memorial Art Museum, the Oberlin Public Library (OPL), and Oberlin College. Shayna Pentecost began her journey with glass at the Cleveland Institute of Art. She continued her studies at the Penland School of Crafts and the Corning Museum of Glass with teachers such as Pino Signeretto, Ruth King, Paul Marioni, and many others. From there Shayna apprenticed with William and Katherine Bernstien (Glass), Harvey Littleton (vitreography) and Richard Ritter (glass). Now living in Cleveland, she is a studio artist creating work and teaching at Superior Hot Glass. Len Peralta is an illustrator in the Cleveland area who has worked on projects for companies like Discovery Channel, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Steve Jackson Games, Boom! Comics, Rifftrax and Noggin. Len has illustrated several books including Silly Rhymes for Belligerent Children written by MST3K’s Trace Beaulieu and Super Powered Revenge Christmas, a full graphic novel by Bill Corbett. Since 2012, Len has worked 100% in the digital environment.
Daniel Roth graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2015 with a BFA in Sculpture. For his BFA Daniel made a series of large interactive steel sculptures that move with touch. Daniel exhibits his work locally and is now working as a Technical Specialist in the Fabrication Studios at CIA. Anna Tararova was born in Russia and currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio. She received an MFA in Printmaking from Ohio University. Anna is a printmaker and papermaker. She completed artist residencies at Women’s Studio Workshop, The Center for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago, The Morgan Conservatory, and Dundee Contemporary Arts. She is the Gallery and Artist Opportunities coordinator at the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation. See her work at annatararova.com Josh Usmani is an artist, writer, instructor and curator. Josh has been teaching kids art and cartooning classes for three years at venues such as the Cleveland Institute of Art, Campus International School, Orange Art Center and Shore Cultural Centre. His comic and cartoon-inspired artwork has been featured in more than 100 group exhibitions, as well as several solo shows. His work is represented locally by Tregoning & Company, a charter member of the Ohio Art Dealers Association. He is currently working on his next solo show in Cleveland, scheduled for October 2018. Previously, Josh has been Visual Arts Editor of Cleveland Scene Magazine and co-director of PopEye Gallery at 78th Street Studios. More of his work can be viewed at joshusmani.com David Verba is a 1980 graduate of CIA with a BFA in Drawing and an MFA in Painting from Kent State University. Before returning to Cleveland Verba previously worked at North Seattle College in their Continuing Education program. Classes taught by David include Drawing: Outdoor Landscapes, Modern Art History, and Experimental Self Expression in Acrylic Painting.
Guy-Vincent is an internationally exhibited and collected interdisciplinary artist and a 2017 recipient of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Excellence Fellowship. His art practice combines numerous modes of expression including; traditional media, video, photography, performance, and net-based works. His Symbol Art is widely known for its innovative use of glyphs, cyphers, and Unicode elements created for the Twitter platform. Nathan Ward is a cartoonist and illustrator from Cleveland, OH. He has had comics put published in The Plain Dealer, Scene Magazine, Maximum Rocknroll, Happiness Comix, and many others. An active musician locally and nationally, his work has been featured on countless flyers and record covers. In 2016, Nathan received a Creative Workforce Fellowship and selfpublished the first issue of his anthology series, Warpwish Comix. He graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2014. JenMarie Zeleznak received her MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and her BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art. She teaches in Foundations at Lakeland Community College and Youngstown State University. JenMarie is represented by Visions West Contemporary in Denver, Colorado and Diehl Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming. In 2015, the National Museum of Wildlife Art acquired one of her pieces for their permanent collection. Her work has been featured in American Art Collector, Art Galleries and Artists of the South, Savannah Homes, Southwest Art, and Images West. Her work is introspective, concerned with emotional and spiritual experience, using the animal as an emblem for the human condition. JenMarie currently lives and works at the Tower Press Building in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

Registration begins July 11, 2018. Please note registration deadlines listed in course descriptions. Early registration is advised as classes tend to fill quickly. Full tuition must be received at the time of registration. You are not considered registered for a course until full tuition is received. You will receive confirmation of registration by mail from the registrar within two weeks of payment. Please be advised that if you register less than two weeks before classes begin, you will not receive a confirmation in time for the first class. A $35 insufficient funds fee will be charged for returned checks.

Missed Classes
If you are unable to attend a scheduled class, we regret that we will not be able to excuse you from payment or reimburse you for the missed class. Informing your instructor of an anticipated absence would be appreciated. If an instructor cancels a class, we will attempt to reschedule that class for the week immediately after the course ends.
Cancellations
Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. If you are registered for a class that is cancelled you will be offered the opportunity to enroll in another available course or have your full tuition refunded. Decisions on class cancellations are made up to three days before courses begin. Early registrations lead to more courses that run, so we suggest that you register early.
Emergency School Closings
Class cancellations will be announced via local Cleveland-area TV and radio stations. Classes closed due to an emergency are not guaranteed to be rescheduled, nor will tuition be reimbursed. If an emergency prompts the closing of the same class for a second time within the same semester, the missed class will be rescheduled. Students and parents will be notified of cancellations and schedule changes through our emergency notification system.

Scholastic Art + Writing Awards Exhibition
Don’t wait until it’s too late!
Our Spring adult classes will start the week of February 4, 2019. Young Artist classes will run on Saturdays beginning February 9, 2019. Look for the spring catalog online and in the mail in November!
Each January CIA hosts this juried annual art competition for students in grades 7–12 living in Cuyahoga County. Students from area schools submit over 3,000 pieces of work that represent the best in the region. Northeast Ohio’s finest young talent shines in this crowd-pleasing exhibition. Gold Key winners continue to the national competition in New York City. Entry forms and information are available at artandwriting.org.
Don’t wait until the last minute to register for a course. Courses that do not meet minimum enrollment will be canceled one week prior to the beginning of class.
Teacher Workshops CIA sponsors workshops and seminars designed to offer art enrichment opportunities for educators in Northeast Ohio’s primary and secondary schools. Join us on October 20, 2018. We will offer several two-week long residential Pre-College classes next summer, July 7–19, and July 21–August 2, 2019.
