Susan Danko Atelier Drawing CEDR 220 00 February 5–March 26 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Learn classical drawing techniques in the French Academic method. For nearly 200 years, the French Academy produced some of the world’s greatest draftsmen and painters. All levels welcome. Peter Green

Encaustics: Painting with Hot Wax CEPT 430 00 February 5–March 26 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This exciting class will introduce you to the limitless creativity and techniques of painting with color in hot wax. The Greeks practiced encaustic painting as early as the 5th century BC for use in portraiture and decoration. It is still widely used today by such modern masters as Jasper Johns, Lynda Benglis, Robert Morris, and Robert Rauschenberg. We will focus on the techniques for applying colors, materials and mediums to your work, as well as how they may be combined to achieve many unexpected and exciting effects. You will use various tools from brushes and knives to heat guns for working the surface of your painting. Explore the use of both opaque and transparent colors to maximize layering effects, as well as the crossdisciplinary possibilities of combining collage and even found objects into your work. Jose Sacaridiz

Exploring Bent Forms in Wood CESC 210 00 February 5–March 26 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $370 In this class, students will learn about the properties of solid woods and plywoods and how they can be manipulated through steam bending and bent lamination. We will use these processes along with basic woodworking techniques to make a kitchen utensil and a hanging wall shelf. CIA’s woodshop and fabrication studios offer unique resources and extensive facilities, normally only available to CIA students. Learn new processes in the wood shop with a CIA Fab Studio staff member! Annie Clark

Abstract Painting CEPT 350 00 February 6–March 27 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Abstract painting is a conscious breakaway from traditional realistic painting. A unique decision made over a century ago retains great value today. Since then, many abstract artists have made important contributions to the art world. Perhaps one of the most significant contributions was changing the public perception of what art should represent. The class introduces concepts and techniques used by masters of abstraction. Three different artists will influence the class direction, including Claude Monet, Jackson Pollock, and Josef Albers. Ideas discussed and practiced in class include: color as subject, painting as object, and multiple process applications. Two paintings will be made from each artist. The first painting will be small in scale, simple, and is considered a study or investigation piece. The second painting will be large in scale, complex, and is considered a final or finished piece. All

Terry Clark ’02 Conceptual Drawing CEDR 310 00 February 6–March 27 6–8:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $300 Take your drawing skills to a different level by using found images as a springboard to allow your creativity to emerge. Alter found images by using different drawing material to work into, enhance, and transform photographs, advertisements, reproductions etc, into personal visions and narratives. Have fun developing your drawing skills using subtle or dramatic enhancements or alterations that will result in creating surprising and unique new images. David Verba ’80 Pleated Paper Sculptures CEFM 275 00 February 6–March 27 6:30–9:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 In recent decades, the age-old art of paper folding has taken on a number new and interesting forms that deviate from its traditional, Japanese roots. Abstract and geometric based origami such as tessellations and corrugation folding yield stunning results, made all the more impressive considering they can be crafted simply from folding a single, un-cut sheet of material. The intricacy of such designs can range from simple to highly complex. This course will delve into the non-representational realm of folding, leaving students with experience in: basic tessellation folding; advanced pleating methods, and the creation of elegant spiral forms with paper. We will also examine different ways these techniques can be applied as design elements in other mediums such as installation art, architecture, photography, book making, and much more. Open to students in grades 10–12. James Peake

Lost Wax Casting CEJM 475 00 February 8–March 29 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $370 Casting has evolved through thousands of years of fundamental methods beginning with open mold casting and lost wax casting dating back 3,000 years BC to the Indus Valley Civilization. The simple premise of lost wax casting has never changed. A model is made from a material that can be burned to an ash, often wax. The model, sprue, and base are cast in a refractory material such as casting investment. The investment mold is heated to a high temperature to burn the model materials to an ash. The mold is then filled with molten metal. When the casting has cooled sufficiently, the investment mold is broken or quenched for the removal of the metal object. We will focus on lost wax casting, completing wax models, and learning the history of casting in art, design, and technology. Students will use bronze metal to create their castings or choose sterling silver at extra cost. Susan Skoczen Southard Steel Fabrication: MIG Welding CESC 150 00 February 8–March 29 6:30–9:30 pm 8 sessions Cost: $400 This course will function as an introductory level overview of basic MIG welding and steel fabrication techniques. The first 3 weeks of the class will focus on fundamental projects where students will become familiar with the processes and tools for working with steel. In the final 5 weeks students will work on an individual project that they propose based on the principals and techniques covered. Functional and purely sculptural works are all encouraged, come ready to work. Zak Smoker
