Mondays About Face: Portraits CEPT 100 00 June 4–July 23 6:30–9:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This course is an exploration in the history and art of portraiture. Learn to open your eye and steady your hand! In this course focus on rendering skills, while also exploring creative ways to interpret personality and expression. From realistic model drawing/painting to more abstracted methods of representation, this course is great for both practice and trying new things. All levels from beginners to portraitists are welcome! This adult class also welcomes students in grades 10–12. Melissa Harris Intro to Photoshop CEDA 300 00 June 4–July 23 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Photoshop is a photo editing, image creation, and graphic design software that uses a system of virtual layers to alter images that are brought into it, or build images from scratch. Students in this course will complete projects ranging from retouching and altering photos, to building an image from scratch, starting with a scanned sketch and adding digital color. This course will introduce the students to the basic application and the many creative options within the software use of Adobe Photoshop. They will become comfortable with the interface of the program, which translates into Adobe’s other
products. Software and computers provided by CIA. No experience is necessary, but students should be comfortable computer users. This adult class also welcomes students in grades 10–12. Beth Halasz Studio Practice in Acrylic CEPT 425 00 June 4–July 23 6:30–9:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This painting course will help guide you toward developing individual ideas within your own personal work, while broadening your painting vocabulary and skills. Demonstrations will be provided to outline concepts and techniques that may be utilized as you create your paintings. Group and individual critiques will provide additional input and guidance in conveying your ideas and making strong independent work. Developing the ability to work at an independent level will be our goal. Susan Danko Watercolor Landscapes CEPT 375 00 June 4–July 23 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Watercolor landscapes will introduce the foundations of working with watercolor paints in the studio environment. Watercolor painting makes use of transparent washes and in doing so allows for a bright image. A painting made with watercolor paints uses the white paper as a mirror to reflect and capture a luminous quality. Topics discussed and demonstrated in class are color theory, paint application, painting techniques, and paint manipulation. Each example will incorporate a new color theory lesson and a painting technique. You will be shown how to paint elements found in the landscape such as skies, rural and cosmopolitan environments, trees, and water. Many small quick paintings and fast dry time permits for a wide range of tricks and topics to explore. Almost all paintings are guided with a step by step process from beginning to
end. Both group and individual attention will aid in your painting’s focus and direction. The beginner and novice painter will be encouraged. Terry Clark Wheel Throwing: Beginning + Advanced CECR 200 00 June 4–July 23 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $345 Learn how to throw on the potter’s wheel! Students can choose from rustic stoneware clay or smooth white porcelain. Beginners will learn to make basic forms like cylinders, bowls, and mugs on the wheel. Using colored slips and glaze, inlay, texture, and carving you will learn various ways to finish your creations. Students with throwing experience will get one-on-one instruction and help in developing their own personal projects. Feel free to bring sketches, drawings, or any inspiration for your projects. You will need basic pottery tools, an apron, a towel, and plastic to cover your pots (dry cleaning bags are best). Clay and tools are available in class for purchase. Amy Halko
Tuesdays Abstract Painting CEPT 350 00 June 5–July 24 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 Abstract painting is a conscious breakaway from traditional realistic painting. This class introduces concepts and techniques used by the masters of Abstraction. Three different artists will influence the class direction. The artists for the summer session are: Mark Rothko, Bridget Riley, and Roy Lichtenstein. Ideas discussed and practiced in class include: color as subject, painting as object, and multiple process applications. In the studio, we will work together towards our goals. Two paintings are made from each reference artist. The first painting is small in scale, simple, and is
Terry Clark Color Theory Basics CEFD 115 00 June 5–July 24 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This introductory acrylic painting course focuses on color studies with emphasis on the elements and principles of visual art. You will create color-concept designs that incorporate complementary colors, color harmonies, color contrasts and hue saturation. Shades, tints and tones will be explored using primary, secondary and tertiary colors. This program is for beginning art students through advanced artists in both fine and applied arts. Students will develop ideas and learn techniques that lead to the creation of outstanding visual artworks. Advanced artists may use this course to brush up on color studies and design principles. Paula Blackman Contemporary Printmaking Processes: Letterpress CEPM 275 00 June 5–July 24 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $350 This class will explore the craft and versatility of letterpress printing. You will be introduced to a variety of image making processes including pressure printing, photopolymer plate printing, and relief printing with type high collographs, found objects, and hand carved linoleum blocks. By the end of class you will have produced a variety of printed matter and learned a range of printing techniques. You will also be able to print comfortably and will allow you to take advantage of letterpress facilities at community print spaces such as Zygote Press and the Morgan Conservatory. Wendy Partridge

Have you ever wanted to try out handbuilding techniques in your clay studio? Or are you eyeing an experimental glaze combination, or want to get reps in on the wheel? In this course ceramic students will have the opportunity to focus on a specific project or technique, with guidance from an instructor. As a material, clay provides endless possibilities for exploration; this is the perfect place to test those methods and create something truly unique. Propose a project to develop throughout the course using the resourceful, open-studio environment of the CIA ceramics facilities. Please bring in sketches of your proposed project and inspirations on the first day of class. Please bring dry cleaning or garbage bags for covering your works in progress. Clay and tools are available in class for purchase.
Learn the skills, tools, and materials needed to design and construct simple household furniture. In this class, students will complete all steps to build their own side- or end-table: initial design, selecting wood, cutting, joining, and finishing. The class starts with safety instruction and an introduction to CIA’s woodshop. Students will then have the opportunity to take a field trip to learn how to select wood based on their planned design. Each weekly session will introduce concepts and materials as well as tool-using techniques participants will utilize as they progress in their project, and will allow students plenty of time to work on their own piece. This course teaches foundational skills that are applicable in all types of furniture building, and can be utilized in any woodshop.
In this course, you will learn the basics of black and white film photography. We will focus on how to shoot and process 35mm negatives, print contact sheets of negative and individual photos in the darkroom, AND digitally scan your negatives as well. This class will include lectures, demonstrations, on-location shooting assignments & in class feedback. Students will be expected to bring their own camera, film, and photo paper, (CIA will provide darkroom chemicals). The instructor will go over these supply requirements in the first class. This class is ideal for analog photography beginners or anyone who would like a refresher! This adult class also welcomes students in grades 10–12.

Lynne Lofton Intro to Blacksmithing CESC 130 00 June 5–July 24 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $375 Light a fire and swing a hammer. Learn how to forge steel! In this class students will learn the essentials of blacksmithing. Using our gas forge, we will learn how to heat and forge steel using the processes of upsetting, tapering, fullering, forming scrolls, and ornamental twists. We will also cover several techniques for forming steel without heat. Students will then get to make one functional piece and one decorative/nonfunctioanl piece of iron work. In this introductory painting course students will learn the fundamental techniques and processes of painting with acrylic paint. Class projects will target basic painting principles and guide students to develop a better understanding of tools and materials, acrylic paint and mediums, basic color theory, and two-dimensional design concepts. Discussions, demonstrations, and handouts will provide students with valuable resources to facilitate good painting practices and artistic growth.
Do you have a story you want to illustrate? In this class we will focus on every aspect of developing your picture book. You will bring your character/concept to life, learn to allow the illustrations to communicate to your reader, create fun and interesting page layouts, and ultimately come out with a page-turning “dummy" or sample book. Come to class with your story, it doesn’t matter if your story is polished or rough. The goal of this class is to understand how to develop your narrative into a cohesive and intriguing piece of work, where words, images and page layout all work together in harmony to make your story come alive in the mind of your reader. Students will have the option to do layout and some illustration work using the Adobe suite.

Etching is the process of using a chemical acid to corrode or eat away at the surface of metal. It can be used as a surface finish or a reservoir for a colored patina or enamel. The etching process works very well with bold graphic images or fine detailed drawings. We will be working with nitric acid for tray etching and ferric chloride and ferric nitrate with our spray etchers. We will also go over how someone could make a DIY “bubble etcher.” Come with photographs, drawings, or patterns. Lyanne Torres Modern Art: History and Drawing CEDR 225 00 June 6–August 1 6–8:30pm 8 sessions (No class July 4) Cost: $300 In this class students will learn the basic concepts and history behind key 20th century art movements such as cubism, expressionism, surrealism, etc. We’ll then create experimental drawings using the concepts, processes and themes of each art movement we study. It will be a great way to enhance your drawing skills, learn the basics of modern art history, and get a deeper understanding and appreciation of modern art. David Verba
Thursdays Animation with Adobe After Effects CEAN 110 00 June 7–July 26 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 In this class you will learn how to create a simple animation using a combination of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. Each student will start out by creating storyboard for their animation to plan the narrative and various shots. You will then create a scene and character in Photoshop and learn how to construct elements using basic tools and layers. In After Effects we’ll learn how to use to add movement, sound and other special effects. Each student will leave with a finished 30 second animation. Working knowledge of Photoshop required. Software and computers are provided by CIA. This adult class is also open to students in grades 10–12. Adri Nerone Designing Illustrative Type CEIL 250 00 June 7–July 26 6:30–9:30pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 This course will explore the expressive connection between type and illustration. Students will begin by learning how to create initial letters from basic geometric forms. From there you'll add illustrative qualities to each letter, and as a final result will design a unique alphabet that will enable you to create customized words and sentences. Each class will have a brief lecture and demo, with the remainder of the class as work time. This course will utilize Adobe Illustrator, and requires a basic understanding of the Adobe Creative suite. Students will do at-home research between classes to get the most out of this course. Sewing for Beginners CEFM 100 00 June 7–July 26 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $325 In this course you will learn the basics of hand sewing and machine sewing. Students will practice basic techniques by first making alterations to old clothes, turning something worn into something new by adding or subtracting elements. We will review pattern making by creating a unique stuffed animal or plush, then by creating a new piece of clothing from a pattern. We'll also explore different techniques used to dye fabric to create interesting effects. At the end of the class you will take the knowledge that you have gained and come up with one final project that combines all of the techniques and processes you've learned. No prior sewing knowledge necessary, come with sketches and ideas. This adult course is also open to students in grades 10–12. Eriana Hargrove Steel Fabrication: MIG Welding CESC 150 00 June 7–July 26 6–9pm 8 sessions Cost: $400 This course will function as an introductory level overview of basic MIG welding and steel fabrication techniques. The first 3 weeks of the class will focus on fundamental projects where students will become familiar with the processes and tools for working with steel. In the final 5 weeks students will work on an individual project that they propose based on the principals and techniques covered. Zak Smoker Mastering Metal: Intro to TIG Welding Grades 9–12 YASC 250 00 9:30am–12:30pm 10 sessions Cost: $365 In this course students will learn the basics of TIG welding, and will use this hands-on process to create a unique sculptural piece. We’ll learn how to weld mild steel and brass. Students will explore how these metals react to heat, and how you can manipulate them to create different and interesting forms. An important part of the class will be learning proper welding procedures and shop safety. No metals shop experience is necessary, but confidence and carefulness are required!
Stop Motion Animation Grades 8–12 YADA 175 00 9:30am–12:30pm 10 sessions Cost: $365
Cartooning 101 Grades 5–8 YAIL 100 00 1–4pm 10 sessions Cost: $255
Students will learn the basics of creating their own short stop motion animation, including film language, shot types, storyboarding, shooting an animation, and editing. To get inspired we’ll watch a variety of different types of stop motion animations in class. Each student will then construct a set and characters out of mixed media, clay and armatures. Students will work in our computer lab with Adobe Premier to add sound and other special effects to their piece. At the end of class each student will have a finished animation saved on a flash drive to take home. Students must bring their own digital camera and tripod to class. No previous knowledge of Adobe Premier necessary. Software and computers provided by CIA.
Cartooning 101 is a studio course for young, aspiring cartoonists, designed to introduce and develop a diverse set of skills around this eclectic medium. Students will work individually and collaboratively to develop their own characters and stories. We will explore a variety of media—including colored pencil, watercolor, markers, pen and ink and scratchboard. While the class is primarily a studio course, lectures will introduce students to the nature and history of cartooning—with a specific focus on Cleveland’s influential cartooning professionals.

Misha Villanueva Portfolio Preparation: Drawing from Life Grades 10–12 YADR 700 00 9:30am–12:30pm 10 sessions Cost: $365 This course will guide you through the basics of observational drawing to create polished and finished pieces that you can add to your portfolio. You’ll utilize different drawing materials and processes, from portraits, to figure drawing, to contour drawing. We will also practice critiquing our work in a constructive, fun and informative way. The goal of this course is to help you reach a higher level of skill in the creation of your own artwork. Students under 18 years old will need parent permission for the figure drawing session. Afternoon Classes 0 to 360: Computer Aided Design Grades 9–12 YAID 100 00 1–4pm (no class on Monday, June 11) 9 sessions Cost: $345 In this course students will be given instruction on computer aided design, or CAD, using Autodesk's program Fusion 360. Lessons will include how to measure and design models from scratch, create 2D drawings, renderings, animations, and how to set up files for printing. The class will culminate with a 3D printed object using CWRU's [thinkbox]. This is a great course for any budding maker, engineering enthusiast, product designer or any creative student interested in learning CAD. Knowledge of basic math skills, including geometry is helpful. Students should be prepared to take notes and utilize ideation sketching that their designs will be based upon. Scott Goss
Josh Usmani Create Unique Fabric Grades 5–8 YAFM 135 00 1–4pm 10 sessions Cost: $255 This class will give students hands-on experience in the different methods and techniques of applying image, color, and other surface embellishments to fabric. The finished cloth can be incorporated into fashion accessories, your favorite new wardrobe piece, or a unique piece of art to hang in your room. Explore a wide range of ways to create pattern on fabric, using dye, paint and a mixture of printing processes. Use the silkscreen as a drawing and printing tool. Experiment with hand cut stencils, and learn how to transfer your ideas and designs onto a t-shirt, tote bag, bandana, and paper. Young artists are welcome in the clay studio at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Explore your imagination by creating sculpture and pottery through the use of this tactile material. You will learn the skills of hand-building and working on the potter's wheel as you develop and translate your ideas into three-dimensional works of art. You will finish off your creations with high temperature (2350° F) glazes that will be fired off in our professional level kilns. High school students have the opportunity to develop their portfolios for high school or college admission. Be prepared to get messy! Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear (old t-shirts and sneakers are best; no open-toed shoes). All skill levels are welcome.
Try your hand… at the face! This fun and creative portraiture course not only focuses on the foundations of realistic representation; you will also learn to add your own expression and style through drawing and painting original portraits. Let’s find out what your imagination adds to a face you can already see! Great for all levels.
Learn the fundamental skills needed to create jewelry and small metalwork. You'll use copper and brass to create samples in sawing, filing, stamping, casting, soldering, and finishing. Students will propose a final project which will be completed by the end of the class. Projects could include bracelets, earrings, rings, necklaces, or small metal sculptures. These can be made in sterling silver at an extra cost, if desired. Open to beginners as well as intermediate students. More advanced students will be encouraged to work on independent projects. Most materials are included in the cost of the class, additional materials may be purchased through the instructor.
Stephanie Miller-Davis Drawing Beyond the Pencil II Grades 6–9 YAFD 245 00 1–4pm 10 sessions Cost: $255 Through visits to the Cleveland Museum of Art we will explore concepts of abstraction varying from that of Surrealist artists like Dalí, Miró, and Magritte; Cubist artists such as Picasso or Braque, Impressionists such as Degás and Monét; and Pop and Modern artists Andy Warhol and Chuck Close. Melissa Harris Intro to Film Production Grades 9–12 YAPH 300 00 1–4pm 10 sessions Cost: $365 This course offers total immersion into the production of a film, produced by the entire class. A script will be created and polished, then pre-production will commence and all film departments (art, costumes, lighting, etc) will be handled by the group. We will create a shooting schedule, then film the scenes, and finally review editing techniques. The final result is a finished masterpiece that each student can take home on a flash drive! Drawing Beyond the Pencil
Paula Blackman is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art and has an MA from Kent State University. She has been granted ten Public Art commissions and has participated in art exhibitions in museums and galleries including solo shows, invitational and juried exhibits. Her work is collected nationally and internationally. She is currently faculty in the Fine Arts Department at Lake Erie College and Lakeland Community College. Nicole Bozickovich, Photography major ’14, has focused on her interests—photography and childhood education. She has taught art to children in the Freedom Schools program at the East Cleveland Neighborhood Center, as well as photographed concerts for Live Nation, which published some of her work on its website. Her BFA Thesis show at CIA has focused on photographing objects used to abuse children and bringing awareness to child abuse. She currently is the art instructor at STEAM Academy of Akron teaching art to grades K–5. She hopes to continue to grow with children and teach them art as well as support the community and local charter schools in the greater Cleveland area. Leandro Castelao is an Argentinean graphic designer and illustrator. After completing studies at the University of Buenos Aires and teaching typography and illustration at his alma mater, he relocated to NYC to expand his career. His unique visual style has been recognized by Communication Arts and American Illustration, and has won him a nomination in the 2014 Latin Grammy’s for best package design.
Terry J. Clark II earned his MFA in Painting from Kent State University in 2004 and his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2002. Terry’s artwork has been featured at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ingenuity Festival, CSU Art Gallery, and is included in the MetroHealth art collection. Terry has taught studio art classes at both Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Institute of Art since 2008. Terry paints with both acrylic and watercolor paints. He also makes sculpture from found objects. His subject matter inspiration comes from earth science and the natural environment. The concepts of natural light, optics, and color are reoccurring themes found in his artwork. Candice Dangerfield teaches individual and small group classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Botanical Garden, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, at her studio in Elyria, and the Cleveland Institute of Art. She has a BFA in Drawing & Painting from BGSU, foundations from CIA, and Art Education licensure from Notre Dame College in Ohio. Candice's artwork has been recognized regionally and nationally. Most recently awarded “Best in Show” in Shaker Heights, her other exhibitions include: the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, and The Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C. Wendy Fedan is a professional freelance designer and illustrator with a passion for writing and illustrating books. It is also Wendy’s passion to help others bring their own creativity alive, and to encourage others to share their wonderful stories and ideas to the world. She has published four of her own illustrated books independently and has helped others to independently publish theirs as well. Wendy has 25 years collected experience working in the creative field as a product designer, illustrator and caricature artist. She lives in Amherst, OH with her husband David (also a CIA alumnus) and their two young kids. Amber N. Ford is a photographer based in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her BFA in Photography from the Cleveland Institute of Art. While attending CIA she also explored video and printmaking. Her work generally focuses on race.
Sydney Givens is pursuing a BFA in Jewelry + Metals at CIA. She has co-chaired the Student Holiday Sale, assisted with a PreCollege course, exhibited at the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center, and participated in CIA’s annual fashion show. Sydney currently works at Sands Company Jewelers. Before she moved to Cleveland, she helped teach children’s art classes at the Carnegie Museum of Art and served as a personal assistant to Pittsburgh jeweler Diane Wilson. Her primary areas of interest are sculptural jewelry and functional objects that involve raw materials, geometric forms, and experimental processes. Eriana Hargrove is a Cleveland native who has studied Sculpture and Expanded Media at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Her main focus is fabrics and textiles. In her time at the institute, she taught many students how to sew and use the application of sewing to construct patterns and alterations while running open studios for the SEM department. Eriana uses textiles and fabrics in making items for everyday life as well as soft sculpture. Rachel Latina is a lifelong Clevelander and a seasoned veteran of the local arts community. Her paintings have been featured in individual and group exhibitions throughout Northeast Ohio for the past ten years. A multidisciplinary artist, Latina also has ten years-worth of experience as a senior graphic designer, but currently splits her time between a digital and traditional studio practice and freelancing as a graphic designer for various clients. Both her traditional and digital paintings feature dynamic portraiture of strong, unique female subjects, with a healthy dose of American pop culture and Japanese street fashion. A collection of her diverse work can be viewed at rachellatina.com. Stephanie Miller-Davis recently retired after teaching art for 35 years in public schools. In 2001, she was recognized as an Outstanding Art Teacher by the Ohio Art Education Association. Stephanie’s work has recently been featured at Tri-C Eastern Campus Gallery, Heights Arts, and the River Gallery in Rocky River. She is currently working in a new warehouse studio location producing mainly functional ceramics.

Jody Amsden earned a BFA in Architectural Design from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2007, and she has worked at several Top 100 interior design firms, including Fitch (Columbus), Interbrand DesignForum (Dayton), MillerZell (Atlanta), and Vocon (Cleveland). Combining an enthusiasm for art and an affinity for young artists, this marks her second summer as an instructor in CIA's PreCollege Program. In addition to her teaching post at CIA, Jody is currently working with Fitzgibbons Design as a freelance designer. She is a past recipient of the Albert K. Murray Scholarship for Academic Excellence at CIA.

Eddie Mitchell received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in painting and drawing in 1987 with a top traveling scholarship award. Eddie has taught art classes at Lakeland Community College for the past 22 years. At CIA, he has facilitated the evening life drawing classes, taught the Pre-College summer program, and the Portfolio Preparation class since 2009. He has maintained a full-time studio for the past 28 years. His work is represented in several galleries across the country. Eddie has been in over 150 art shows, created numerous commissioned pieces for public locations, and has sold over 1,000 paintings. Michelle Mullins-Means has been teaching Pre-K through 8th grade art in the Cleveland area for 16 years. She is a Cleveland Institute of Art and Case Western Reserve alumni, class of 2003. Michelle earned her master’s degree in art education from Cleveland State University in 2008. In her spare time she enjoys creating art related clothing and accessories which she wears to enhance her lessons. She is married to her soulmate Darrin and has two sons, Hadrian 7, Ronin 4, and Picasso the family turtle who is 17 years old. Adri Nerone is an artist who creates freeform crochet tapestries, distorted photo collages and sculptures, and experimental videos and animations. She received her BFA in Technology and Integrated Media from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 2007. Her work has shown at Heights Arts, The Gallery at Lakeland Community College, Reinberger Gallery, Front Room Gallery, and Forum Art Space. She has also shown work in film festivals like Video Fall Out, Standing Rock International Film Festival, Athens International Film Festival and Akron Film + Pixel Short Attention Span Film Fest. She has done freelance video editing and animation work for production studios and has taught many digital arts and stop motion animation classes at a variety of institutions. See her work at adrijanana.wordpress.com. Wendy Partridge is a letterpress printer, book artist, and paintings conservator. Between her undergraduate and graduate studies, she worked with printer Peter Koch for three years
at his letterpress studio in Berkeley and at the Press in Tuscany Alley in San Francisco. She helped establish and for a number of years was the coordinator for the letterpress studio at the Zygote Press. She teaches several workshops each year on letterpress printing. As a member of the CLE Colectiv, she prints handset letterpress cards and coasters. See her work at clecolectiv.bigcartel.com.
in Weaving and Printmaking. In 1997 she opened The Gallery in Chagrin Falls which featured contemporary fine art + crafts. Later Mary became the Gallery Curator and Assistant Director at the Valley Art Center in 2001, where she taught adults and children, before becoming the Gallery Coordinator and Exhibition Curator at Lakeland Community College, a position she has held for 12.5 years.
Zak Smoker graduated from with a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2011, and earned an MFA in Sculpture from Washington University, St. Louis in 2013. Zak exhibits his work locally and nationally. He works as a technical specialist in the Fabrication Studios at CIA.
Josh Usmani is an artist, writer, instructor and curator. Josh has been teaching kids art and cartooning classes for three years at venues such as the Cleveland Institute of Art, Campus International School, Orange Art Center and Shore Cultural Centre. His comic and cartoon-inspired artwork has been featured in more than 100 group exhibitions, as well as several solo shows. His work is represented locally by Tregoning & Company, a charter member of the Ohio Art Dealers Association. He is currently working on his next solo show in Cleveland, scheduled for October 2018. Previously, Josh has been Visual Arts Editor of Cleveland Scene Magazine and co-director of PopEye Gallery at 78th Street Studios. More of his work can be viewed at joshusmani.com.
David Thomas is a native Clevelander and an alumnus of Miami University (Ohio), where he studied film. He later received his law degree from Case Western Reserve University, and now represents both Emmy and Academy Award winning filmmakers while advising them on the development of intellectual property, deal structure, production and distribution. David has credits as a producer under his Post Industrial Pictures banner for the feature motion films of Seven Nights of Darkness and The Yank, both of which were shot in Cleveland. Currently, David teaches a cinema appreciation class as an adjunct faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Lyanne Torres graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in the Jewelry and Metals department with an emphasis in Enameling in 2014. She became the Artist in Residence for a year after graduation and is the Technical Specialist for the Jewelry and Metals department. Mary Urbas has 38 years of experience in the professional art world as a gallery owner, curator, teacher, consultant, and exhibiting fiber artist, bringing a real world perspective to both sides of the business and marketing of art. Mary received her BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art ’80 with a major in Textile Design and Silk Screen Printing, with minors
David Verba is a 1980 graduate of CIA with a BFA in Drawing and an MFA in Painting from Kent State University. Before returning to Cleveland Verba previously worked at North Seattle College in their Continuing Education program. Classes taught by David include Drawing: Outdoor Landscapes, Modern Art History, and Experimental Self Expression in Acrylic Painting. Misha Villanueva is a certified Harley technician and combination welding technology instructor who has worked in the industry for 15 years building motorcycles and fabricating architectural designs. TIG welding has been the backbone of his career to due to its clean, strong form that is an art itself. Teaching is a passion, and Villanueva was previously an educator in New York City teaching the art of TIG welding to students at Apex Technical School before he came to Cleveland to pursue a degree at Cleveland Institute of Art.

Class cancellations will be announced via local Cleveland-area TV and radio stations. Classes closed due to an emergency are not guaranteed to be rescheduled, nor will tuition be reimbursed. Each January CIA hosts this juried annual art competition for students in grades 7–12 living in Cuyahoga County. Students from area schools submit over 3,000 pieces of work that represent the best in the region. Northeast Ohio’s finest young talent shines in this crowd-pleasing exhibition. Gold Key winners continue to the national competition in New York City. Entry forms and information are available at artandwriting.org.

Teacher Workshops exploring artistic media CIA sponsors workshops, and seminars designed to offer art enrichment opportunities for educators in Northeast Ohio’s primary and secondary schools.
