CIA faculty member Barbara Stanczak’s meticulous sculptures blur the line between abstract and figural, reminding us that ocular experiences can be physical too. Her sculpture takes on the feel of the natural elements from which they are made—Italian translucent alabaster, butternut wood, gold leaf, and copper. In this exhibition she captures complexities and contradictions in eye and hand, smoothing the surface of rough stone, for example, to reveal its fluid origins.
