Caribbean & Cuba: legendary pirate islands, dream beaches and fiery characters. The expression “the journey is the reward” could almost have been written about an Atlantic crossing aboard a tall ship. When the Sea Cloud and the

Sea Cloud ii leave the port of Las Palmas, you will be embarking on one of the last great adventures. Their sails billowing in the wind, the illustrious windjammers conquer the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean and glide gracefully towards the Caribbean sun. The idyllic turquoise blue waters were famous pirate hideouts during the Spanish and Portuguese colonisation of the Americas. The galleons that once sailed here, making their way back to Europe laden with gold and silver, were an easy target for pirates. But these outlaws had little interest in the natural treasures to be found on the Caribbean islands – a real pity, as with their concealed bays and picturesque beaches, the Grenadines, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and Tobago are all worth their weight in gold. In popular sailors’ haunts, guests can revel in cheerful colours and beach barbecues under the palm trees. St Lucia, Grenada and Dominica are full of tropical richness, natural beauty and the scent of spices. The jet set island of St Barthélemy, on the other hand, seduces visitors with its stylish yachts, luxury brands and jewellery that would even be fit for a pirate. Finally, in Cuba, the air is filled with music, a vibrant atmosphere prevails, and the rich historical legacy carries the ultimate seal of approval as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 5

Central America, Costa Rica & Panama: thrilling jungle worlds and breathtaking nature reserves. In Costa Rica and Panama, you will find wonderful national parks and unspoiled natural havens. Even during the passage through the impressive Panama Canal, the view of this masterpiece of technology is crowned by a jungle experience at the dammed Gatún Lake. The wild beauty of nature abounds in the form of imposing volcanic landscapes, untouched rainforests and rare species of animal. Panama’s Pearl Islands also offer a wealth of underwater treasures; with picture-perfect beaches and reefs, this archipelago more than deserves its reputation as a veritable paradise for sun worshippers and snorkelling lovers. The sea route offers the perfect way to experience all of this area’s many national parks on just one trip – with no hassle and no stress. The windjammers’ routes take in widely spread out natural wonders and take you to places that hold a very special seal of quality: UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Belize and Mexico, it is not only the secretive world of the Maya that is brought back to life; this area is also home to the second-largest coral reef in the world, the Lighthouse Reef, itself playing host to a fascinating underwater natural spectacle, the Great Blue Hole. On the ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, which form part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, you will find European influences everywhere, including jolly Dutch gabled houses and magnificent country estates. This is where those with a love of adventure and thirst for discovery truly will feel at home. 7

The S ea C loud : the greatest windjammer legend of all time. The Sea Cloud is a dream come true. Driven on by its white sails, this tall ship combines the feel of a private home with a truly glamorous experience. At its launch in 1931, it was the world’s most magnificent sailing yacht and a masterpiece of shipbuilding. Everything that the Sea Cloud ever was and had can still be experienced today. Every minute detail and every extravagant touch on this legendary windjammer showcases the charming individual flair of its original owners: Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, Edward Hutton. The varied past of the Sea Cloud reads like a thrilling novel with fragments of world history hidden between its pages. And yet today life on board the yacht still bears many similarities to the glamorous idleness of a bygone era, when politicians and playboys, Hollywood stars and ageing aristocrats were among its guests. Be it on the bridge or in the “Blue Lagoon”, on the promenade deck or in the restaurant, the elegance of the ship’s former glory has been lovingly restored. The imposing marble fireplaces, elegant woods, golden taps and selected antiques provide an atmospheric backdrop – a perfect setting for a relaxed voyage that incorporates both a modern lifestyle and today’s high standards. You can feel the authenticity of the Sea Cloud’s charm, with its delightful nostalgic air and its timeless feel, which never ceases to amaze. The

Sea Cloud simply is, and remains, the most beautiful windjammer legend of all time. 9

Sail through the Panama Canal and discover the unique natural landscapes of Panama and Costa Rica. Visit two of the ABC islands: Aruba and Curaçao

Aruba and Curaçao make up the A and C of the ABC islands and belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Their distinctive features – including Delft tiles, Dutch gable houses, palms and the pastel colours of the Caribbean – make this an enchanting destination. Curaçao boasts a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the shape of its small capital Willemstad. Panama City and the Panama Canal

When the Panama Canal opened in 1914 after more than 30 years of construction, it allowed ships sailing between New York and Los Angeles to shorten their route by almost 15,000 kilometres (9,320 miles). Panama City has experienced enormous growth ever since. The contrast between its ultra-modern banking centre and lovingly restored historic quarters is what makes the city Central America’s style capital. Costa Rica’s and Panama’s Pacific coast: perfect sailing waters

The Pacific coast is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, reliable winds, outstanding anchorages, lush green coasts and radiant sunshine. Columbus named Costa Rica “La Huerta”, or “the garden”, and the name is just as fitting today as it was back then. The Coiba National Park

The Coiba National Park is one of the largest marine national parks in the world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Made up of 38 smaller islands and the larger

12

Coiba Island, the park is home to many indigenous plant and animal species. And as this is also the ideal habitat for marine wildlife, you are more than likely to encounter one of the park’s 23 whale and dolphin species. The Corcovado National Park: one of the most picturesque areas of Costa Rica

Stretching out into the Pacific Ocean, the Osa Peninsula is home to one of Costa Rica’s unspoiled rainforests. Gigantic trees reach up to 80 metres (262 feet) into the air, while around 400 different species of bird fill the skies. The forest is also home to a host of other wildlife including tapirs, pumas, jaguars, ocelots and anteaters. The uniquely diverse wildlife and plants of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an absolute paradise for nature lovers: Over a quarter of the country is protected, and twelve different areas of vegetation lie within its borders. No wonder then that there is no shortage of unique flora and fauna. A lecturer accompanies the trip

The fascinating flora and fauna in Costa Rica’s national parks are bound to throw up questions. Therefore, a scientist with a detailed knowledge of the region’s various ecosystems will be on hand to answer them. He will give presentations and accompany the shore excursions.

Fascinating underwater worlds, mysterious Maya sites and magical Cuban nights. Several relaxing days at sea

Maya cities in Mexico and Belize

Besides crossing worlds and discovering new lands, we let relaxation take a front seat on our yacht for four whole days. Plenty of time to enjoy life under the white sails and to be spoilt in every way.

The culture of the Maya, which began roughly 5,000 years ago and ended around the time of the Spanish conquest, is still a mystery. On our trip you will discover three Maya strongholds: Tulum in Mexico is the only Maya city situated on the coast; Altun Ha and Lamanai are in Belize. Lamanai remained populated for roughly 3,000 years. Excavations have revealed that over 20,000 people lived there around 700 A.D.

The world’s second largest coral reef

The Belize Barrier Reef contains countless small coral islands. The Lighthouse Reef Atoll features a particularly special natural wonder: the Great Blue Hole, a circular submarine sinkhole and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Snorkelling is obviously another great way to discover the impressive beauty of the reef.

Havana’s Tropicana

Discover the place where Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Josephine Baker took to the stage and where Edith Piaf, Ernest Hemingway and Marlon Brando applauded wildly in the audience: the legendary Tropicana in Havana. With its colourful shows, this cabaret nightclub is just as magical, vivacious and thrilling as it was when it opened back in 1939. A lecturer accompanies the trip

Knowledge, entertainment and facts – our expert is on hand to give talks on a wide variety of specialist subjects. He will also be on board to answer any questions that you may have.

White sandy beaches, beautifully restored grandiose buildings and Maya ruins with a sea view: Havana – Havana Historical Havana

Havana’s old town is defined by its imposing fortresses, baroque churches and monasteries, palaces and wide squares, arcades and lively shopping streets. As well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is also a wellknown place to spot vintage American cars and, thanks to the Malecón coastal road, one of the most popular promenades to stroll along as the sun sets. On the Isla de la Juventud and in María la Gorda, the highlights are found in, on and under the water – solitary picture-perfect beaches with palm trees offering shade, a warm, gentle sea sparkling in numerous shades of blue, and a coral reef with perfect conditions for snorkelling. The Maya site of Tulum

Gory sacrificial rites, a highly sophisticated calendar and mysterious architecture are just some of the many themes associated with the Maya culture. At the Mexican archaeological site of Tulum, a former ancient Maya trading centre, history comes to life in stunning surroundings – Tulum is the only ancient Maya site that lies directly on the coast.

Colourful rainforest, rousing rhythms and the scent of nutmeg and vanilla: Barbados – Barbados Tobago: an island paradise

The small fishing village of Charlotteville is situated in Tobago’s idyllic Man-O-War Bay and can only be reached by land via a steep road which cuts through the rainforest. With the ship anchored in the town’s picturesque bay, you will have plenty of time to discover the island’s diverse birdlife or to plunge into the emerald-green waters. A delight for all the senses: Grenada, the island of spice

There is a reason why nutmeg is immortalised on this country’s national flag. Since colonial times nutmeg – along with cloves, cinnamon and ginger – has been one of the island’s most important exports. If the aromatic fragrance of the tropics were to have a name, it would have to be “Grenada”.

Even from a distance, its twin volcanic peaks, the Pitons, proffer a regal greeting to the approaching SEA C LOUD . And once we have docked, the island welcomes us with its lush tropical scenery. Dominica, unofficially dubbed “Nature Island”, is proud of its unspoilt scenery. One of its national parks is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sailors’ favourite haunts

Small, elegant yacht clubs, picturesque anchorages, a selection of glorious beaches and quaint little beach bars where you can meet to discuss all manner of sailing adventures or simply while away the hours under a palm tree – all this and much more is on offer at the popular sailor hang-outs of Bequia, Virgin Gorda and Jost van Dyke. The jet set island of St Barts

When the banker David Rockefeller came to this island in the 1960s, he realised one thing: that this is a great place to live. Since then, the small Antilles island of St Barthélemy has received an increasing number of celebrity guests and has now become a getaway for the rich and famous. Many Hollywood stars love to come here for a holiday retreat and enjoy taking a stroll along the quaint streets of Gustavia.

French flair on the Îles des Saintes

This small archipelago, which earned its place in history as the Gibraltar of the Caribbean, has been a great source of contention over the years. It finally became French territory in 1816. Nowadays, the only remnant of these troubled times is an old fort. Life here is peaceful and spiced with a touch of savoir-vivre. Take a stroll through the small town on the island of Terre-de-Haut with its shops and cafés.

can easily be recognised as the true sister ship of the

legendary Sea C loud, yet it also has its own, very unique character. This yacht combines the high standards of a 5-star cruise ship with the unique atmosphere of a romantic windjammer. A tall ship offers that feeling of limitless freedom as you sail the seas under open skies. It is a feeling that pervades the Sea Cloud

at all times. This

sense of freedom is manifested in all aspects of the on-board lifestyle and forged by the expansive space of the four decks, the relaxed social atmosphere and the space for private contemplation. The ship’s library, bar and restaurant impress with an elegant ambience, as well as stunning views of the sea both day and night. In the lavish lounge you will also hear the dulcet tones of the Steinway grand piano. The sporty at heart will find everything they need in the gym or the sauna. And depending on sea conditions, the swim platform provides direct access to the largest swimming pool in the world: the sea. It does not take long before our 65 crew members have got to know each of our maximum of 94 guests. Preferences are taken note of, and personal dispositions are observed. Since it was commissioned over ten years ago, the Sea C loud ii has never ceased to enchant and impress. Not only is it a cruise ship, but a very private yacht. While discerning cruise lovers will discover their passion for classic sailing ships, sailing enthusiasts will become devotees of great voyages. 23

Burghard Pieske actually studied geography and education, but he has also qualified as a ship’s captain. Since he spent ten years sailing around the world, he has been focusing on reliving authentic historic sailing adventures. He is an author, adventurer and freelancer for “Yacht” magazine. Depending upon the circumstances, it is possible that another lecturer will be on board for this trip.

Sailing along the trade winds

“Trade winds” is the name given to the powerful currents of air that great seafaring nations used to rely upon to carry their fleets across the Atlantic. Today they are one of the reasons why the Lesser Antilles have become a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. It is easy to see why one of the world’s most famous sailing regattas, the Antigua Race Week, takes place here: The warm trade winds that blow around the Leeward Islands mean sailors constantly have the wind in their sails.

Lush rainforest and colourful reefs, a luxury island for the jet set and the joie de vivre of calypso. Tobago: an island paradise

The small fishing village of Charlotteville is situated in Tobago’s idyllic Man-O-War Bay and can only be reached by land via a steep road which cuts through the rainforest. With the yacht anchored in the town’s picturesque bay, you will have plenty of time to discover the island’s diverse birdlife or to plunge into the emerald-green waters. Grenada – the island of spice

Although Grenada has been blessed with around 45 picture-perfect beaches, the country’s real treasure remains its lush, green island interior. Deep volcanic lakes, dense rainforests, waterfalls and small river courses form the primordial backdrop of the island’s sugar cane fields and spice plantations. It is the reason why the scent of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg hangs in the air wherever you go on Grenada. Snorkellers’ paradise in the Tobago Cays

For many, life under water is a fascinating world – one that becomes even more magical the closer you get. The Tobago Cays’ Horseshoe Reef is such a place. This horseshoe-shaped coral reef encloses four small islands that glow in rich shades of green. The sea, in contrast, embraces turquoise, emerald and every shade of blue.

The natural beauty spots of St Lucia and Dominica

The pitons of St Lucia are world famous and magnificently beautiful. But perhaps even more beautiful is the unique view you have of this stunning natural masterpiece from the anchorage of the SEA CLOUD II. Dominica is one of the wildest and most primal of the Lesser Antilles. The heart of the island is covered in thick virgin forest, where you will find plunging rivers and small creeks winding their way through the jungle. The jet set island of St Barts

Although many like to call it “St Barts” for short, the island’s official name is St Barthélemy. Having passed through several different owners, the island was finally bought by France in 1877 and is now firmly in the hands of the jet set. Elegant Gustavia entices with classy goods and glamour hidden away behind restored facades, and the harbour hosts luxury yachts with famous owners. “The Baths” – imposing granite formations

It is sometimes easy to think that this is one of nature’s fairy tales: Once upon a time, there was a giant who played with large stone marbles. His favourite playground was in Virgin Gorda, a place now called “The Baths” – a gigantic rock labyrinth made out of circularshaped granite. Experience the Caribbean joie de vivre with string and steel bands

Be it salsa, merengue, soca, calypso or steel pan rhythms, all of these very different music styles have one thing in common – they all capture the heart and soul of the Caribbean. 28

Where windjammers are in their element, the jet set relax on the beach and green volcanoes jut into the sea: Antigua – Barbados The British Virgin Islands – a sailors’ paradise

Days spent lounging in the sun, moving with the trade winds, small islands floating on the horizon and a tall ship with timelessness entangled in its sails; you will enjoy a relaxing feast for the senses aboard the SEA CLOUD II. Watch in amazement as the crew manoeuvre the ship before dropping anchor on a new shore. A day at the beach on Jost van Dyke

Jost van Dyke is the smallest of the major British Virgin Islands. This mountainous island is noted for its volcanic beauty and its beach, the White Bay, which certainly lives up to its name. We take the zodiac ashore to enjoy a wonderfully relaxed day. A beach barbecue at “Ivan’s Stress-Free Bar” will offer up some tasty delights. The jet set island of St Barts

St Barthélemy has had several masters: the Spanish, the Swedes, the French and the Knights of Malta. However, it is now firmly in the hands of the jet set crowd, who come here for short breaks to get away from it all. The magnificent Pitons of St Lucia

2015 preview: legendary sailing waters, picturesque harbours and exciting cities. Over the following pages, you will discover our varied sailing itineraries, running between April and December 2015. The Sea Cloud starts its voyage in the western Mediterranean in spring. After visiting Spain’s bustling cities and the sunny Balearics, the tall ship sets sail for France’s jet set strongholds and small artists’ villages. In Sardinia, Sicily and along the Amalfi coast, beaches and the turquoise blue sea gleam in all their glory. A host of interesting historical sites await you in the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean. Ithaca, home of Odysseus, and Thessaloniki are two new destinations in this area. Finally, the itinerary carries passengers to the Lesser Antilles, stopping en route in Morocco and the Canaries. The Sea Cloud

ii

also begins its journey in the spring in Spain and France,

before spending all of the summer months in more northerly regions. In addition to flying visits to Amsterdam and Bruges, the ship also moors in Hamburg and on the island of Sylt. Impressive scenic countryside and exciting cities are waiting to be discovered on voyages to southern Norway and through the Baltic, calling at Stockholm, Tallinn and St Petersburg. From here, the Sea Cloud

ii

sails back to the Mediterranean and the Canaries, before following the summer sun across the Atlantic, en route for the ABC islands and Costa Rica. Both tall ships sail together again in the Canaries in November. And when the Sea Cloud ii arrives for “Sail Bremerhaven” and “Kieler Woche”, you can experience these sailing events “live” on board from the comfort of a deckchair. 37
