research into early space exploration and the space race in the 1960s. looking at retro images, 1960s fashion and retro visions of the future

further development into retro futurism, the space age, visions of the future and 1960s fashions by Pierre Cardin and Paco rabanne. i was particulrly drawn to the quirky and futuristic nature of retro futurism

textile development - I took inspiration from circular jects and pattens in physics and the universe. I used a ple circular shape and laser cut it into silve metallic ric to keep the retro futuristic feeling of the space

the colour palette of this collection is monochromatic featuring only black, white and grey with hints of metallic silver. the fabric choice reflects the futuristic theme of the space age. i have chosen modern and textured fabrics in metallic and reflective finshes mixed in with simpler fabrics

the mini collection both outfits feature teh circular laser cutting details. the shape and silhouette have been influenced by 60s fashion, visions of the future and space wear. the colour palette is firly neutral so the garments could easily be interchangable into each outfit

Philae The recent Rosetta mission saw the success of the Philae probe landing on the comet 67P - a first in space exploration that provoked excitement around the world. This led me to research the history of space exploration particularly focussing on the space race of the 1960s. My collection has been inspired by the themes of retro futurism and its parallels with fashion past, present and future.

The shape and silhouette of the collection has been inspired by 1960s fashion, space suits and the wonders of the universe. I have chosen a monochromatic colour palette with metallic silver influenced by photographs from early space exploration. The fabric choice reflects the futuristic theme; I have selected metallic and reflective fabrics interspersed with modern textured fabrics such as plastic and leather, along with laser cut circular designs which reflect the circular phenomena in physics; mathematical patterns and galaxies such as the cats eye nebula.

Space exploration has pushed the boundaries of human achievement and innovation, it is important that we continue the spirit of discovery whether that is through scientific research or creative fashion innovations.
