Grow Together The central theme of this design to house families and allow for growth and creativity of children; not only that, but to encourage healthy social lives within a dense city that is fast becoming a place in which raising children seems too hostile. I believe good design in a housing block can alter this belief and convey a way in which the urban enviorment will become a desirable place to have your child grow up. The opportunites for children in the city must be realised. Thus cars have no place in this design for they are the root of the stigma of growth in the city.

Existing Site Plan

In looking at the existing sites three key areas emerged: the large community are at the north east of the site which allows for events; the serenity of Brunswick street, and the view of the church to the north. We wished to retain or expand these key areas in a site with an abundance of potential

GROW TOGETHER

Masterplan

Three main public and semi-public areas within the site. The first is at the north-east; a large open area diagonally across from Merchant Square. This area is to continue as its use for temporary events. The lane leading into a central piazza surrounded be the first floor residential courtyards. This area is intended to introduce an aston lane equivalent to merchant city, matching its dimensions of 7m width, the difference being it spans out into three lanes and the central piazza. The west of the site is the semi public square which allows for the families potentially living their to have a beautiful and pleasant area for children to play in, the highlighted building also has a private courtyard.

Massing

The original shape of this building provided the opportunity for a sheltered private courtyard where young children can play. However, this building seeks to battle with the fear of urban life for children so it extends out on the east onto Brunswick Street which allows for the “streetscape to be claimed and used as another area in which the occupants can use. The deck access in a building can creat a much more social enviroment in entering a building. Along with the serene courtyard, it allows for a much more pleasant entry to home.

Ground Floor

The courtyard has been laid out as such to allow for direct access to flats with curves involved to help create a feeling of serenity along with plan colour scheme within. The small walls and edges along the outside of the building allow for some land to be claimed for the building. this allows for the ground floor flats that feature in this building. There is one lift that serves the 20 flats on the upper storeys. This floor can occupy between 13 and 19 people.

Ground Floor

As is shown here, there is five flats on the ground floor, three of which are the same type. The area not highlighted consists of from east to west - a cafe, a stationary store and a pop up shop, n response to what is common in this area of Trongate. The cafe serves warm food and is provided a kitchen. All three of these have acces to a bin store Flat Type 1 Flat Type 2 Flat Type 3 Flat Type 4

First Floor

Deck access is shown on this plan. Each Floor has a utility cupboard alongside the lift. this allows for the building to be easily maintained Some rooms here have windows extending to floor level as they are now away from the street level. Deck access bedroom privacy is not an issue due to a combination of the 18m seperation of windows across the courtyard and the frosted glass on the lower section of the windows.

Second Floor

Escape strategy has been designed. All flats are provided a secondary escape route and all flats suit the escape distances. All doors into the flat hallways have been assigned a fire rating of FD30. This allows for time to escape from any room within the building as they are all connected to hall in each flat excluding ensuites. Windows along the deck access are all 1100mm above floor level to suit fire regualtions. Highest floor level is 10.84m so there is no need for additional fire safety measures if had bee nabove 18m
