How Safe is Your Eye Makeup Rout ine? by Dr. Mirwat Sami
Eye make-up can enhance your appearance however, these enhancements may end up being harmful to eyes if applied carelessly. Issues can range from allergic reactions, to eye infections, to serious injuries. Though extreme, the most serious eye issues caused by make-up application could involve injury to the cornea. Dr. Mirwat Sami, a Houston area Board Certified Oculoplastic Surgeon explains, ?Corneal injuries usually cause pain and always necessitate quick medical attention. Other eye make-up application issues can be caused by bacteria growing inside the cosmetic containers or on the surface of make-up applicators. If precautions are not taken when applying make-up, bacteria can be transferred directly to your eyes.? Dr. Sami offers t ips on how to look good wit hout compromising eye healt h. - Keep eyeliner pencils sharpened so that the rough wood casing won't scratch the eye or eyelid. As the pencil becomes old, the liner tip becomes stiff, requiring more pressure to apply. When this happens, replace the pencil with a new one. - Don?t mix and match cosmetics. Use what?s intended for your eyes on your eyes only. Sometimes we use the one specific product on different parts of our face, so don?t use the same pencil for both lips and eyes, or your lipstick as your eye shadow, as that can introduce bacteria. - Throw away eye makeup after three months. Infection-causing bacteria grow easily in creamy or liquid eye makeup. - Never share eye makeup, and when sampling makeup in stores use only fresh applicators and samples. (It's safest to avoid store samples.) - If you tend to be allergic, introduce only one new eye makeup or care product at a time. If there is no reaction, add another new product, and so on. 10
- If you notice an allergic reaction, find out what the ingredients are and let your doctor know. Avoid products that contain untested or harmful chemicals. - Before applying makeup, be sure your face and eyelids are very clean. Always apply makeup outside the lash line, away from the eye, to avoid blocking the oil glands of the upper or lower eyelid. These glands secrete oil that protects the eye?s surface. Never apply makeup while in a moving vehicle. - Never use bacteria containing saliva to thin old or clumped makeup or to wet a mascara wand. - Do not separate your mascara-clumped lashes with sharp items. - If you tend to have dry eyes, avoid metallic/glitter, powder or other makeup that flakes. Flakes can get into the tear film and increase your eyes? irritation. Glitter eye makeup is a common cause of corneal irritation or infection, especially in contact lens users. - Remove all eye makeup at night before sleeping, especially mascara. Brush a clean cotton swab along the base of the eyelashes to remove all makeup remnants. Avoid getting eye makeup remover in your eyes and thoroughly rinse remover off your eyelids. - If you use an eyelash curler, make sure the rubber is soft, not stiff and cracking. Always use the curler before applying mascara. Persons allergic to nickel should not use an eyelash curler, as the metal frame contains nickle.

Kickstarter Update: Debbie Porter & Fabulous Phebe
Photo : Katy Anderson
In December, Ciao Bella! published an article about Fabulous Phebe creator, Debbie Porter who launched a Kickstarter campaign. Porter raised enough money to publish a third children's book in her Tales of a Fashionista series which is co-written by children, and to produce her children's fashion line. Fabulous Phebe is a brand with heart that offers children positive character building messages. Initially, Porter sought to raise $3,500 and exceeded her goal, raising $5,224 through Kickstarter. In January when her line was shown at The Coffs showroom in Dallas, stores in five states picked it up. To date, eight states carry her brand and Porter just shipped pieces to New York for an upcoming fashion show produced by designer, Cesar Galindo. Recently, Porter received an invitation from Shark Tank to audition her line in Houston at Rice University where auditions were being held. Porter said that Shark Tank producers listened to 500 eager entrepreneurs pitch their ideas. She is currently waiting to hear back from the show to find out if her company was chosen .
Photo: Debbie Porter
"We're building our fan base on social media,"said Porter. Social media for Fabulous Phebe includes a Youtube channel, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. "A mother of one of the children involved in the project posted a Fabulous Phebe dance-off video on Ellentube, (on The Ellen DeGeneres Show website) and the video came in the third or fourth place. That inspired us to launch a dance contest choreographed and instructed by the children." Porter loves the enthusiasm that the children bring as each Fabulous Phebe project comes to fruition. Currently, Porter is creating a Fabulous Phebe nightgown and book set and a short animated film to pitch as a cartoon. She continues to seek investors. Porter, who works full-time as a photographer said, "I'm doing everything I can to keep it going, in addition to a regular job. What helps is that I was able to create the whole package including the illustration, the fashion design and the photography myself. Positive feedback is what keeps me going. Perseverance is what it's gonna take" Porter urges would-be entrepreneurs to follow their dreams. Dream Big was the first book. I think we should inspire people to dream. " Visit fabulousphebe.com.

No Laughing Mat ter
Comedienne, Actress Vicki Lawrence Discusses Her Struggle with Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria
E
mmy-award winning actress and comedienne, Vicki Lawrence has brought laughter to millions. After making her television debut on The Carol Burnett Show, where she spent eleven years, Lawrence went on to star in her own series, Mama's Family. A multifaceted entertainer, in 1973, she received a gold record for her hit single "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". Lawrence has hosted daytime talk shows, appeared on numerous game shows and theater productions and has recently held roles on, Yes Dear and Hannah Montana. In 2002 Lawrence launched her one-woman show entitled Vicki Lawrence and Mama, A Two Woman Show which has been so successful that she is currently on the road performing the 40th Anniversary Tour. Lawrence has been married since 1974 to her best friend and professional partner, Al Shultz, who is the former head of make-up for CBS. When asked to share her favorite beauty tip, Vicki has often quipped,
by Heidi Suprun
"Sleep with your make-up man!" The couple has two grown children. They live at the beach in Southern California with their two dogs. Lawrence enjoys doing motivational speaking engagements for women's groups and supporting numerous charities. Her hobbies include cooking and sailing.
Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria Lawrence is currently on a campaign to raise awareness about chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU), a disease that is no laughing matter for those who are struggling with it. Lawrence herself was diagnosed with CIU four years ago. One morning she woke up and the palms of her hands were itching. "I ran downstairs and said to my husband, 'honey you need to buy a lottery ticket because obviously we're coming into a lot of money tonight' and we laughed about it," said Lawrence. "After a few minutes when it didn't go away I 15
"There were little bumps that would turn into cotton. I remember thinking my skin will never look normal again." When they crawled up the back of her head she thought, " Oh God -- I hope not my face." Everyone around her told her it was something she was doing, something she ate or something she changed. Her daughter told her that she needed to switch to a holistic diet. A friend told her it was probably the tannins in the wine she was drinking. " Everybody wants to help but it's not really something you want to talk about because you feel ridiculousyou know?" said Lawrence.
Vicki Lawrence reports that her CIU is now under control.
thought 'this is kind of crazy'. There was nothing to see, and being the mother that I am for so many years, I put my hands in ice water because I know that's a good remedy to stop itching." The next morning Lawrence woke up with the same thing. " It was like Groundhog Day and I thought 'this is so weird'," she said. After immersing her hands in ice water again which brought temporary relief, the itching returned with a vengeance while she was out walking her dogs. "Things started itching my arms, my abdomen, my back, my stomach, my ribs. I remember walking the dogs home very quickly. "Come on guys you have no time to pottie. Let's get home! '" she told them. Once inside, Lawrence remembers jumping into the shower and turning the water on, making it colder and colder until she was "shivering and couldn't stand it anymore." She slathered her body with menthol lotion and sat on the edge of the bed, shaking and wishing she would pass out on the cool sheets. Her husband, Al, told her, " You've got to get to the doctor. Something's wrong." Lawrence made an appointment right away with her family's allergist. To help diagnose her hives, Lawrence took pictures. 16
After six frustrating weeks of trial and error, Lawrence's doctor diagnosed her with chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU). CIU is a form of itchy chronic hives with no known cause that may last for months or even years. Approximately a million and a half people suffer from CIU and women between the ages of 20 and 40 are twice as likely to get them. "My doctor said ' you could scratch test yourself to death or go on any holistic diet you want, I don't think you're going to find the answer for this.' I think the hardest thing for most patients to accept is that that it's not something that you've done and it's not something that you've changed. I think that's the most frustrating thing for people." said Lawrence. When Lawrence was diagnosed she said, " There was no good information on the Internet about CIU. There were people asking questions on blogs, but no good information. Fortunately, my doctor was familiar with CIU and was able to give me a treatment option that's kept it under control. That's why I agreed to join this campaign -- to let people know you haven't lost your mind - it's real and hopefully here's some help. I'm happy to provide my face so people can say,' oh I saw Vicki Lawrence talking about this'. I think if there's a familiar face that you tend to remember better." she said. Lawrence's story is on the CIU and You website, an educational outreach project developed in partner-
ship with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), and made possible by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Genentech. The site includes helpful links and a downloadable symptom tracker. Lawrence urges people keep a diary to track their hives. "The website will help guide you in the right direction and give you some smart questions to ask your doctor" said Lawrence, "Take pictures with your cell phone, because you might not get to the right doctor for a few weeks and get diagnosed with CIU
f or six weeks. You want to be armed with the diary Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two Woman Show
so when you get to the right doctor you can really advocate for your own health. There are a number of drugs now that are available to treat this. You've just got to get to a dermatologist or an allergist that's familiar with CIU."
Fans can find Lawrence's tour dates and DVD's of Mama's Family and The Carol Burnett Show at

Help for CIU in Houston "We actually see it (CIU) on a daily basis." says David Engler, MD, FACAAI, FAAAAI of The Allergy Clinic in Houston. " The most important diagnostic tool is listening to the patient. The allergy airborne testing is frequently not helpful at all for patients with hives or urticaria. Once in a while there are a couple of blood tests that will be important. A lot of immunologic studies are being done. We are looking at the specifics of the immune system and what tends to go haywire which results in hives."

Sal l ie Krawcheck is eLEVA TIN G Women The Ellevate Global Network Owner Says Networking Is The Number One Unwritten Rule of Success in Business By Heidi Suprun
E
llevate Global Network launched its Houston Chapter this year and its owner, Sallie Krawcheck flew to Houston to speak to 150 business women. She shared smart, real world advice at the event held at the JW Marriott Downtown. The largest group of its kind, Ellevate has more than 30,000 members from across industries. Started as ?85 Broads? in 1997 the organization was created as a networking space for women at Goldman Sachs by the first woman ever promoted into sales management at the firm. The Goldman address in NY is 85 Broad Street, so the women called themselves "85 Broads". Krawcheck, a former executive at Bank of America and Citigroup, bought the group in 2013 and changed the name to Ellevate to better describe its mission to elevate woman in all aspects and phases of their lives and careers and serve as a powerful resource for women looking to ascend their careers. Since then, the organization has quickly expanded into new markets, as networking is cited as the number one unwritten rule of success in business. Krawcheck has received many awards and honors during her career. She was recently named number nine on Fast Company?s ?100 Most Creative People 2014? list, as well as one of ?10 Up and Coming Leaders to Watch? by Entrepreneur Magazine. Fortune called her ?The Last Honest Analyst? during the research scandals and noted that hers was the most influential voice for research quality and integrity. Krawcheck has also been listed as one of Forbes?and Fortune?s ?Most Powerful Women? in business and is
a past recipient of CNBC's ?Business Leader of the Future Award.? We interviewed Krawcheck while she was in town. How can the Ellevate network assist women in their car eer s and what makes Ellevate differ ent fr om other networking gr oups? "I'd say there's room for lots of networking groups. We still have lots of room to go to advance woman and so I really embrace the other women's networking groups whether it be the Lean In groups, whether it be the out on the West Coast - Women 2.0 or Levo League. There 64 million professional women in the United States and we're advancing through business but there's plenty to go. We are global, so there's 64 million in the United States and even more globally." "Networking has been called the number one unwritten rule of success in business and coming together and exchanging information, knowledge business tips etc. makes all the difference in the world."

"I always say who you know is what you know. I got to the Ellevate network by sitting next to Arthur Levitt it on an airplane. (The former chairman of the SEC) who introduced me. I had a line of introductions that was nine people long. One was an entrepreneur who introduced me to a venture capitalist - Nine people later I met the woman who owned at the time 85 Broads - today the Ellevate network. And so this idea of coming together and sharing information-- the pie can grow. It's not if I tell you something then it's subtracts from me. It can actually help all of us grow in my thinking." What do you think it's going to take to put mor e women in cor porate leader ship positions? "I think the first thing is it needs to have the support of the Chief Executive Officer. Without the support of the man or woman at the top you might as well just forget it. We survey our women and what we found is you could have it as a corporate mission but if you don't have someone sitting there actively thinking about it all the time our gender biases take over. I'll give you a real example of my gender bias. So, a handful of years ago when I was running Smith Barney we were doing our promotions and there was a young man that came up to be promoted and what was said about him is 'Oh my gosh -he's aggressive. He'll break some eggs. He gets it done. He's beat plan.' And we said great and he was promoted.'" "The next one up was a woman. 'You know she 22

beat plan. The market's really good this year -- but she does in a way that's aggressive and she'll break an egg.' We advised her to get an executive coach in order to make her more effective. Right? And I didn't catch it, because the word aggressive with a man is a positive and with a woman can be a negative and they can be exactly the same. It was actually several people later that one of the gentleman in the room said do we realize what we just did? We attributed his success to him and her success to the market. And we reversed course and promoted them both. That was me, and my head of HR by the way was a woman. So we both had gender biases. But what I fret about so much in this country is that Sheryl Sandberg's Lean in - if taken to an extreme - means we should all act like that. And the power of diversity is diversity and we also need to make sure that we are training our managers - not trying change our women - but change our managers too and that has to come from The CEO." Why do you feel it's good business to invest in companies with women in leader ship positions? "Because the research shows they drive good results, and again it's not women are great and men aren't. It's diversity is great. When you have a team that is all of the same it's not aggregate, right? The analogy that I use is a bunch of UNC basketball players from the past come together and the five best players in a group of 20 are Kendall Marshall and Jimmy Black and Marcus Page and Phil Ford and
Lynn Zeid and Laurel Ross enjoying the networking event. Photo by Rovo

Raymond Felton. And the question is have they ever won a national championship and the answer is no because they're all point guards - Right? Adding another point guard when you have five point guards doesn't add anything. Adding a shooting guard, adding a center, adding a couple of forwards means something. "What research shows and the reason that you invest in them is because it shows that diverse teams have high returns on capital, lower risk, greater innovation, greater client focus, greater long-term focus. The power of diversity is so great that a diverse team outperforms a smarter team."
preneurs, who can move into new industries - get back up. Learn from it and get back up."
What advice do you have for women over 40 who lose their executive positions?
Jennifer Roosth, President of the Houston Ellevate chapter, announced that the group will host a fashion show at Tootsies on August 11. Roosth said that the Houston chapter, which is the third chapter in Texas to form, is rapidly growing. She added that the local chapter is coordinating with the Austin and Dallas chapters on statewide events. "Members are utilizing the benefits in different ways." Roosth said, "One woman on my Board loves the online chatrooms and she goes to online seminars every day. One friend needed a platform for an article she wrote so she posted it on the website. One friend works for a multinational company and she's got meetings in different countries all the time and she calls people in the network and has dinner with them." Roosth said people who have met at the events are interacting and doing business together. For more info on Ellevate membership and to register for the event visit:
"It has happened to me. I drank a lot of wine. A lot of wine... I tried to learn from it. The day after I was reorganized out of Bank of America - - I was fired --I mean they said reorganized but there was a group of us they sent home. I sat on the sofa for a day and I drank. The second day I called every member and I said thank you for the opportunity of a lifetime . What could I have done better? So I immediately tried to learn from it. The third is get back up. Increasingly as business changes so quickly everybody's going to fail. if you're not failing in some way in your career you're not trying hard enough. You're playing it too safe. Everybody's gonna fail. Don't be embarrassed by it. Failure is not fatal. You can get another opportunity tomorrow or the next day or the next day. And sure, it might not be that job at that company but for creative individuals who can move into being entre-

EGYPT SHERROD:
A merica'sM ost B eloved RealEstateA gent The brown-eyed beauty talks about her journey from radio personality to real estate mogul By Michelle Smith
A
merican radio and television personality Egypt Sherrod is the founder and CEO of The Egypt Sherrod Real Estate Group based in Atlanta. Named "America's most beloved real estate agent" Sherrod hosts HGTV's top-rated show, Property Virgins now in its twelfth season, and will host the forthcoming Flipping Virgins. Viewers easily relate to her no-nonsense approach and genuine care for their investment. Sherrod has made recurring appearances as the real estate expert on NBC?s Today Show, CNBC, FOX, CNN, HLN and has been featured in Rolling Stone, Black Enterprise, and many other magazines. The powerhouse speaker and moderator hosted the stage at Oprah?s ?The Life You Want Tour?, and has hosted countless business conferences. Sherrod is also an award-winning radio personality and has been syndicated in more than 60 cities throughout the United States. The willowy, brown-eyed beauty recently published her first book, Keep Calm? It?s Just Real Estate: Your No Stress Guide to Buying a Home (Running Press/Perseus Books). In it, she simplifies the process and provides invaluable information for home buyers with handy lists and a glossary. Topics include: things to consider before buying a home, why it's important to stick with one agent, ways to be an attractive home buyer on paper in order to ease mortgage-approval, what to do in a bidding war, the importance of the home inspection and much more.
?Now that I?ve done one book that has been very well received nationally, I want to do it again so I?ll definitely have book number two and number three." said Sherrod. Sherrod, who was born in Philadelphia, visited Houston when she was younger because her father lived here. ?I love the weather, I love the people, and everyone is super friendly,? she said. Sherrod moved to Silver Springs, Maryland when she was 12 and later moved back to Philadelphia where she earned a B.A. in Broadcasting -Telecommunications and Mass Media from Temple University. She also studied theater at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, before becoming a licensed realtor. ?I think working in radio helped me come out of my shell. I was in radio for 20 years,? she said. When I think back to my young adulthood, I was so shy. You know, where you go to a party and there?s one person holding up the wall? That was me, I was a total introvert. On radio I grew into my own skin." Later Sherrod was bitten by the real estate bug. "A few years after I started making real money, I got into flipping properties and wanted to keep more of my profits, so I got my own license," she said. An accomplished realtor for 13 years, Sherrod now has a team of agents. I?m a very strong and confident negotiator and I have the gift of foresight. Being in radio helps me present things in a very confident way." 25
Sherrod is licensed in Georgia and New Jersey and works with clients nationally. To do this, she created a preferred agent concierge network which allows her company to assist clients in the purchase or sale of any property in the continental United States. Sherrod feels that the personal touch is important. "Being on a national platform, I still treat everyone with the same amount of care. It?s the most important purchase you?ll make," she said. Happily married since 2010, Sherrod met her husband, Mike Jackson ten years ago. She recalled, ?The first time I saw him, I was hosting a concert in New York, but I was just getting out of a relationship and was in my `I hate men?phase. Then I saw him at a parade and thought he was so cute. Our final time, he purposely came to an event where he knew I would be and he brought me roses. He said he was not going to let me get away. We?ve been inseparable ever since." Before joining Sherrod in the real estate business, Jackson, (also known as DJ Fadelf) was a successful entrepreneur. Jackson owns Luxe Sound Entertainment and is co-author of Single Man, Married Man, a book he self-published with friends. The couple has one child together and Jackson has one from a previous marriage. Recently, they've been discussing the journey of adoption. "I go to church, but I believe God is everywhere," said Sherrod who loves her quite time in the morning. ?I try to be silent and reflect on my upcoming day and plan. I often get words or messages that come to my head. I call them victory thoughts; they come from a place of catharsis for me. Sometimes I post them on Instagram. I pray every night and release every night, on my knees. I give it all to God and know that I?m not perfect but I try to be a living, breathing example of his work. I want
my daughter to grow up with those same values. We go over everything she?s thankful for, including the cartoon, "Team Umizoomi". In 2008 Sherrod founded The Egypt Cares Family Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to financial empowerment and awareness. The focus of the organization is to educate both men and women about 26
the importance of wealth preservation and home ownership. The foundation?s work has been very successful, earning her many Citations and Proclamation for community service. A devoted mother, loving wife, respected entrepreneur and focused community advocate? Egypt Sherrod seamlessly uses the power of television and the microphone to help others, all the while living her own life to the fullest. Looking ahead five years, the tall brunette says, ?I see myself much like the Egypt you know now, growing my business. I hope to still be doing television. Who knows what the future will bring? "

Egypt Sherrod's BeautyConfessional As confessed to Michelle Smith
ciao bella! "What ar e your sk in car e secr et s?" Sherrod "My mom taught me many years ago about a mask that you make with Fuller?s Earth, brewer?s yeast, egg whites, and water. It creates a clay paste that pulls the impurities out of the skin. I do that once a week. It can really dry your skin out so you have to follow up with some Vitamin C oil and a good moisturizer."
ciao bella! "What ar e your favor it e cosmet ic pr oduct s?" Sherrod "I really like Makeup Forever HD, it works great for me on television, and it gives me full coverage. My skin still looks like skin. Sephora carries it. I?m a lash girl, so I don?t use mascara. I say you are never dressed until you put on your lashes. It gives my eyes the Waaah! Factor. Her favorite fragrances are Flower Baum by Viktor and Rolf. I also love Angel by Thierry Mugler. My husband?s name is Michael so one year he bought me the coconut scented Michael Kors, it?s very soft. Those are the only three that I rotate. For skincare, believe it or not, I use Pond?s. I don?t pay a lot for my beauty products. When you think about our parents and grandparents, their skin was beautiful and they did not pay $200 for a moisturizer. To this day, my grandmother?s skin is gorgeous. Every single night she puts Vaseline on her face. It works. For years I didn?t do it but as I started to age, I tried it and the Vaseline makes me feel hydrated."
ciao bella! "What do you do t o manage st r ess?" Sherrod "When I figure it out, I will call you back, I am still trying to master that. I meditate and I go to meditation classes to find balance. One time, I put the candles around me in the basement and fell asleep. My husband said I was trying to burn the house down. Now I try and take a spa day once a month. I don?t travel year round, only during the TV season when we are filming. In between seasons, I have two to three months off."
ciao bella! "What is your f it ness r out ine?? Sherrod "Every January I join the gym. Any mother can probably laugh when I say I make plans but I rarely keep them. I put my gym clothes on but then I may get a phone call. I did join some Zumba classes and I?ve learned to eat in smaller portions. I get on the digital scale every morning. They say that?s the best time to do it to find your true weight. "
ciao bella! "What is your diet secr et ?" Sherrod "I had an allergy panel done and found out I was allergic to certain foods, certain nuts, salmon, foods with red dye that either caused an internal reaction or made me retain water. The allergy panel was a blessing ? I also found out that I?m allergic to egg yolks and I used to eat eggs every morning. Now I eat oatmeal, turkey bacon or egg whites with spinach, with a little coconut oil. I often cook in coconut oil; its healing properties are wonderful."
ciao bella! "How would you descr ibe your per sonal st yle and what ar e your fashion favor it es?" Sherrod "I would say classic but edgy. I like to buy pieces that can stay in my closet for ten years. I do not follow trends. I love color and I?ve learned what shapes look good with my body. I?m a blazer and heels girl, in my field; it?s great for real estate. I look polished and I can swap the pencil skirt for jeans and funky jewelry and I?m good to go. I wear a lot of Stella & Dot, the statement rings and can?t miss earrings. " Photo courtesy of Egypt27Sherrod

JOHN EDWARD: CROSSING THE COUNTRY AND CONNECTING SOULS By Heidi Suprun Photography by Adam Rose Photography by Adam Rose 30

I
nternationally acclaimed psychic medium, author and lecturer John Edward visited Houston on his world tour in July to conduct a group reading for hundreds of fans eager to connect with loved ones who have passed on. Down-to-earth and entertaining, Edward was spot on during his two-hour presentation which was at times touching and other times humorous. It was also educational. Edward explained that we all have the ability to connect with deceased loved ones. He also answered questions from the audience to help fans learn how to connect with loved ones by becoming aware of the subtle messages they send us. For the past 25 years Edward has helped thousands of individuals with his unique ability to predict future events and communicate with those who have passed on. He became a household name when his first series Crossing Over with John Edward, aired from 1999-2004, His next television series, John Edward Cross Country, brought him further popularity. In both shows which became internationally syndicated, Edward's accuracy and caring earned him a vast and loyal following. Edward has written numerous New York Times best sellers including One Last Time; Crossing Over: The Stories Behind the Stores and What if God Were the Sun? which was adapted into an Emmy nominated movie which aired on Lifetime. His broad appeal has lead to numerous international tours and guest appearances on television shows including The Today Show, Dr. Phil, Oprah!, Jimmy Kimmel Live and many more. Named one of People Magazine's Most Intriguing People of the Year in 2002, Edward's clientele are willing to wait over two years to receive a private session withe him. In October 2011 Edward launched "Evolve" (formerly known as "The FIVE"), a platform on his website JohnEdward.net to connect with his audience on a deeper level. Members of THE FIVE have access to exclusive monthly web events as well as to his latest electronic novel, Above and Beyond. We recently caught up with him.
What have you been doing since you stopped filming your TV shows, Crossing Over and John Edward Cross Country? "Since I stopped doing conventional television I've been doing the same thing I've always done. I see clients privately, I do group readings and I travel around the world doing seminars, groups and lectures. When I left conventional television I decided to pioneer the subject matter in the digital arena so I brought it online and created a very focused community called Evolve. It's on John Edward.net and every week there's a new Crossing Over type of TV show which is very interactive and includes Skyping with the people that are part of the Evolve community. Five people a month get a private reading with me, five people get a pair tickets to events and five people get a question answered. There are different tools for the Evolve online community including a big newsletter that goes out. The reason why I decided to do it online is because there's an immediacy with the Internet. If I do a TV show here it may not get syndicated around the world for a year or two. - If I do it online every country gets it at the same time."
Tell me about your latest book, Above and Beyond. "It takes place in a hospital on the other side. Think Grey's Anatomy --it's the book version. It came from an amalgamation of a bunch of readings that I've done. Looking from the perspective of healing and putting the focus on a hospital on the other side provides a safe environment for people to imagine what it's like there. It's a fictionalized story - ut it's a way of teaching. It's available on my website under The Evolve banner."
Tell me about when you discover ed your psychic abilities. "I can't really claim that I discovered it myself. I had somebody who put me on my path. They told me that 31
I had this ability when I was 15 after a reading. That reading was literally my awakening. I felt like my abilities weren't so much developed as remembered. I think I brought them in from my past life." "I started doing readings and I remember reading for my cousin Florence. I remember a week later she asked, ' can you come back to Grandma's house on Sunday and can you do my cards again --and can I bring five friends?' I remember laughing. I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I was flipping over a couple cards and looking at the meanings coming up -- kind of telling her a story about her life and I wasn't really sure what I was doing and she said 'well let me just tell you that everything that you said-happened!' It became that for me. I would read people and they would call me back with this immediacy of "can you do that for me again?" "I kept getting this very positive feedback and I noticed that over a period of time the predictions I was making were happening within a very short period of time to get my attention and build my confidence. I've changed the word "predictions" to "projections" because predictions makes it seem like you can't change things and I think a lot of stuff can be changed in a reading. That's why it comes up. With my readings they told friends. They told friends and so on and so on and so on." "And then two years into doing this work I started making connections with people that had crossed over after the death of an uncle and subsequently my mom passed about year-and-a-half after that, and it was healing for me. After they passed I kind of had to know where they were and the other side opened up for me. First, I think, in a personally inquisitive way, and then It happened in more of my sessions and then I got noticed for it, and then came TV." Did you do anything specific to cultivate the abilities once you discover ed you had them? 32
"I did. I studied quite a bit and I think that's the most important thing I could tell people. If anybody's interested in learning more about the world of energy -- go to school for it. If somebody says, 'I'm going to publish a book,' they can self-publish the most grammatically incorrect, horrible piece of literature out there but it's a reflection of who they are, so I think it's really important for people to learn. Knowledge is power and I think learning about the different tools of metaphysics is really important. Things like astrology and numerology help give people an understanding , a language to define, filter and reflect the world of energy that we live in." Ar e you offer ing any workshops or classes? "Right now we're doing a 100 Day Evolution on John Edward.net which started on June 1 where we send out little nuggets and tidbits every day. I also have an eight week online course called Project You that's going to be announced over the summer." Do you think that people ar e becoming mor e open-minded to the work that you do then when you fir st star ted? "Absolutely. I think if you go back to the year 2000 I was one of those people that was crucified in the media for being controversial and breaking the glass ceiling. Don't get me wrong; there were mediums before me that worked in the media and paved the way for me to have the opportunity to do Crossing Over - folks like George Anderson, Char Margolis and Suzane Northrup who were out there doing radio and TV in a consistent way. Then Crossing Over polarized people to either love it or hate it. To this day there's a love it or hate it energy attached. It's polarizing, but I think it definitely opened the door for where TV's gone in the last ten years." When you'r e doing r eadings for people do you ever hold back shar ing what you hear ? " No, Whatever comes through I say. I have a rule
-- if I see it hear it or feel it, I say it. I think it's very important for me to be able to pass on what's coming through. It's not my job to censor." What do you find most r ewar ding about the work that you do? " I think helping people get over a tough patch in their life. Inspiring them. Giving them tools and encouragement. Helping them know there's something else. Helping them connect with loved ones and friends. If I can let them know there's a possibility and show them the potential, that can be a powerful thing to help them move forward in their own lives." I s ther e anything you might have to say to skeptics and cynics? " I encourage skepticism and I think that skepticism is important. When somebody crosses the line to being close-minded, ignorant and cynical that's is okay with me as long as they're over there in their corner and I'm over here in my corner. I've never gone to attack the skeptics on a skeptical website. I've never taken a stand to call them stupid or take it personal. I've always been very, very respectful over the years of doing this. They can't do that. When somebody's that cynical they can't say, "Listen it's not for me - I understand that people believe in it-- but I don't." It becomes a passionate vitriolic attack and I block that. There's something deeper that's going on with somebody when it gets to that point." As announced earlier this year, The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation extended a 2 to 1 challenge opportunity until December 31, 2015. For every $2 the Society raises, the McNair Foundation will give $1 up to $4 million to help us reach ground breaking by the end of 2015. ?Cancer is already daunting enough, but worrying about travel, lodging, and other necessities while enduring treatment can be a huge
The McNair?s were moved to issue this challenge grant after Bob McNair was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in 2014. He was treated at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and was recently given a clean bill of health. Throughout his cancer journey McNair saw firsthand the thousands of patients who come to Houston to receive their treatment. ?These folks are from all over

and the added expense of coming here and staying for an extended period of time brings an additional burden onto a family that is already under so much stress,? says McNair. There are currently 31 Hope Lodges operated by the Society nationwide, including Lubbock. Due to patient demand, Hope Lodge Houston will be the largest in the nation with 62 patient suites. At capacity, the Lodge will offer approximately 23,000 nights of lodging per year, representing a combined savings of over $2 million to patients. Hope Lodge Houston will be open year-round with a unique homelike setting that includes a shared kitchen, dining spaces, a help-yourself pantry, daily access to fresh linens, patient laundry facilities and a library with Internet access as well as free transportation to and from treatment facilities. Once constructed, Hope Lodge Houston will be southeast Texas?first and only no-cost residence specifically for
cancer patients, helping to alleviate the overwhelming financial burden these families face. ?Bob and Janice McNair are family-oriented, entrepreneurial, andcivic-minded. They have provided a simple way to make a meaningful contribution to the future health of thousands of cancer patients,? said Sandy Biggers, American Cancer Society?s campaign director. ?Whether you are able to give $5, $25, $100 or $10,000, the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation will increase your gift. 10 EXPENSES MISSING FROM YOUR WEDDING BUDGET By Andrea Woroch
Tis the season to say "I Do" as millions of brides and grooms tie-up loose ends for their big day. In the last few weeks of planning, stress levels often peak as unexpected issues and expenses arise. Though the couple-to-be try their hardest to stick to a budget, well-made plans are often sabotaged by overlooked needs and extras. Considering a wedding can set the betrothed couple back $31,000 according to the 2014 average, there's not much wiggle room for budgeting mistakes. Plan ahead by making space for these important (and often hidden) wedding costs.
Post age. Oversized and awkwardly shaped invites can cost up you to $2 a piece to mail. Skip the fancy boxed invitations and bulky, 36
multilayer cards to keep postage costs down. Don't forget to include postage for save-the-dates, RSVP and Thank You cards in your budget, too. For those inviting 150 guests, you're looking at over $200 in just postage alone! Consider e-vites for less formal wedding-related festivities like the engagement party and bridal shower; they're faster, easily customized and much cheaper!
Overt ime. The band, DJ, photographer, videographer and wedding planner design a contract based on a wedding schedule and includes a maximum allotment of time. Go over and they'll charge you roughly $250 per hour for every hour they work overtime. Give yourself a cushion to include extra time for possible delays and negotiate a free additional hour or discount if things go over.
weddings Tax, t ips and swipe f ees. Taxes, tips and credit cards fees can add up quickly. Make sure bids from vendors include these additional costs before making your decision or finalizing your budget. While paying with plastic is a great way to earn rewards and miles, know that vendors will push credit card fees on to you. So it's important to weigh the rewards against the fees or inquire if there's a cash discount. Finally, it's important to factor service tips into your budget. Etiquette suggests you tip vendors including the DJ, limo driver, servers and band members anywhere from 10 to 20%
a botched job which will cost you more in the long run, both financially and emotionally.
Rush f ees. With so many details to coordinate, it feels impossible to follow your wedding planning timeline but procrastinating on certain elements may result in higher prices. For instance, rush orders on a dress cost approximately $500 while expedited passport renewals run $60. Even a baker may charge more for a cake or cookie platter without enough notice, so plan well in advance to avoid this hidden budget-buster.

During the booking process, negotiate a reduced delivery charge or request the front desk hand out welcome bags during check in. If all else fails, ask family, friends or your bridal party to make the deliveries on your behalf.

Susan J. Elliot t 's New Book Shar es Secr et s t o Successf ul Dat ing and Finding Real Love Af t er t he Big Br eak up Overcoming a breakup can be a real challenge. Often to be successful in the next relationship, we must understand the parts of us that broke up too. Learning to recognize, evaluate and change the negative patterns that repeatedly show up in our relationships is hard, but with some reasearch, introspection, and practice it's possible to take a step forward and get back out there. As with anything, re-entering the dating scene is a process. In Getting Back Out There, (Da Capo Press) a sequel of sorts to her book Getting Past Your Break Up, Susan J. Elliott outlines the pains and the gains inherent in facing the dating scene again. With insight into the "Five Rs" Readiness, Rejection, Recycling, Rebounding and Retreating - Elliott illuminates the bumps we can expect on the road to a new relationship and shows us how to cope with them. Through professional and personal accounts, Elliott teaches her readers to set appropriate standards in the dating world. With exercises that include writing daily affirmations and creating a "life inventory" that examines past family and personal relationships, Elliott helps quell our apprehensions and encourages us to keep an open mind - even to options like online dating. 46
Execs, children, and boyfriends with kids are components of the modern dating scene, and dealing with them may not be easy. Elliott's personable approach helps readers understand that getting back out there is tough - but infinitely rewarding if done right.
Bumps in t he Dat ing Road: "The Five Rs" Adapted from Getting Back Out There 1. Readiness - Don't force yourself out into the world before you are ready. It's helpful to make a proactive and conscious decision that you're ready to date. You also want to have an idea of what kind of dating experienc you're ready for at this moment --- is it a fling? A life partner? It's not just important to know that you're ready but to know what you're ready for at this time. 2. Reject ion - Know that rejection will happen from both sides of the table. You will reject and be rejected. It's important you don't take it personally. Taking a new view of "rejection" as something that's beneficial is essential. A continuing mantra must be, "I only want to be with people who want to be with me."
3. Recycl ing - You may feel thrust, without warning , back into the pit of grief and despair over your breakup. Many times, recycling is triggered by dating because it signals that you're moving on and some part of you doesn't want to do that. It's not weakness or anything that you're doing wrong; it's a part of the grief process and you don't have to spend alot of time worrying about it. Don't let recycling throw you so off course it makes you afraid to get out there again. 4. Rebounding - Sometimes people know they're on the rebound. It's best not to string someone along, so let them know you've recently emerged from a major relationship and try to give them some idea of where you are. Be as honest as you can. It's possible but not probable that a rebound relationship can work. Even if it does, you have some emotional issues that are connected to unresolved issues from your breakup. It's best to recognize a rebound for what it is and use it as a pit stop and not a final destination. 5. Ret reat ing - Someone may have convinced you that it's time but you feel unsure. Even if you feel ready, you may fall apart when you get there, discover that your skin is still very thin and you're susceptible to being hurt over anything and everything. It's okay to retreat for a while to discover more about how to navigate the world as a single person. Many times getting back out there requires baby steps, more self-discovery, and learning to be social again without pressuring yourself to date.

HANH TRAN UNVEILS ART MURAL FOR REVELRY ON RICHMOND?S FIRST ANNIVERSARY Revelry on Richmond, Houston's stylish upscale sports and craft beer bar, celebrated its first Anniversary in July as one of Houston?s hot spots with a circus themed party, along with art unveiling of work created by Houston Artist, Hanh Tran. The adult carnival featured fund raising fun fair games on the patio including bobbing for beers, Plinko, spinning wheel for prizes and a dunking booth with purchased playing tickets to benefit Houston charity Puppies Behind Bars. Proceeds will support the raising of service dogs to aid veterans including those with amputations. The puppies are raised in prisons by inmates who learn to contribute to society through the program. The event kicked off with the unveiling of a mural art work tribute to Revelry dubbed as one of Houston?s ?Best Bars,? created by local artist Hanh Tran of Hanh Gallery. The artist drew inspiration from the character of Houston in bold color and depicted landmarks to include 48
the Bayou and famed Houston artist David Adickes larger than life sculpture, ?I love Houston.?along with Revelry?s featured Houston Brewery?s: Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co, Gun?s & Oil, Texas Beer Refinery, 8th Wonder Brewery, B52, Saint Arnold Brewing Company and Karbach brewing company. Hanh said, ?I wanted to capture everything local in Houston that represents the community and their support for each other. I love David?s work and wanted to make tribute to him and to create a work that reflects the character of the bar with its warm welcome and vibrancy.? David Adickes joined Hanh and Revelry owner Ted Baker in unveiling the work to raucous applause. The artist, usually found in her gallery on West Alabama in River Oaks, creating oil on canvas pieces was recently awarded a ?Freedom Award,?by Helping A Hero,? and continues to support the community through therapy art classes for patients as well as group painting parties for kids and adults.
