o you remember when there were three long months with no school and nothing to do but have fun? Well I do, and wow, that was E-V-E-R-Y-T-HI-N-G. Summer is almost here again and I feel like publicly proclaiming my unconditional love for this wonderful season. I love the memories that it holds for me and I love the fact that it stays light till really late every night. And even though I complain about the sweltering heat and excessive humidity on its “doggiest” days, I still love it. One thing I always enjoyed as a kid in the summer was swimming and I always looked forward to shopping for my new swimsuit. To bring back some of the joy of swimsuit shopping, Michelle Leigh Smith shares trends, shopping tips from wardrobe consultant, Helen Perry and an interview with “Trunkettes” founder, Hilary Genga. Michelle also contributed a wonderful editorial about Barbie, the infamous and well-loved fashion icon who launched her career in a swimsuit and lets girls know they can do and be anything they want. May is Stroke Awareness Month and Celiac Awareness Month. Every 40 seconds a stroke occurs in the United States according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and surprisingly, it happens to be the number one preventable cause of disability. Be sure to read our article on strokes and learn more. Another health issue that’s coming to light more and more is celiac disease. In the United States, approximately three million people have the disease and only five percent know they have it. Hollis Hood interviewed actress Jennifer Esposito, who struggled with the disease for many years before she was diagnosed. This I love you summer! month, the actress turned author/ baker launches her new book, Jennifer’s Way in which she recalls her struggle and discusses her newfound gluten-free, diary-free diet which has worked miracles to eliminate many of her symptoms. May and June recommendations: Have a Happy Mother’s & Father’s Day! Go see Girls Only before it leaves town on May 18. Donate or volunteer for Dec My Room. Find a great recipe on the Central Market website and cook something outdoors. Read Wendy Capland’s article “GPS Your Career,” and take some quiet time to think about what you really want out of life. Buy a new swimsuit. Go swimming. Have some fun! “Summer breeze makes me feel fine...” Till next time~

current trend we are seeing for Spring/Summer 2014 is the bob, a classic cut that has been reinvented and modified throughout the years. At TRE SPA texture and varying lengths are the hottest trends for bobs in 2014. A great way to make the style feel fresh this season is by having the classic outline of a bob, with various layers on top. This will give it that beach like tousled effect that looks effortless and says “ I didn’t spend any time on my hair but it still looks great.” Keeping the outline one length, or angled slightly forward are the two most popular and wearable looks for day-to-day. It can also be worn sleek and smooth for a great polished look. Both options will keep the bob looking fresh and on trend. Texture is where we can have fun with the bob, and really customize it to fit each person's personality and hair type. This can be achieved by running a curling wand thru the front parts of the hair and tampering through the ends in back. Texture definitely plays a role with a modern bob, but the length is where we are seeing the most variation. Long bobs or “ lobs” with various styling choices are all the rage. From the shoulder down is the hottest trend we are seeing at TRE SPA now. Depending on your lifestyle, choose the length that works for you. Most women like being able to pull their hair up off their face for working out, having styling options, etc; which is why this length is so popular. If ponytails don’t play a big part in your daily routine, opt for a shorter jaw length bob for a carefree sexy style. Your stylist can always help guide you to the best option for your hair type, face shape, and lifestyle. Google: Jessica Capshaw, Keira Knightley, Emma Watson, Karlie Kloss, Rita Ora, and Michelle Dockery for a few examples of how to wear the current bob trends. Or stop by TRE SPA, 2516 Sunset Blvd. and have a consultation with a stylist. 713.523.7800. www.trespasalon.com. 6 ciaobellamagazine.com | May/June 2014
TIPS FOR GREAT SKIN From Skin Care Specialist, Sue Peterson-Shivers
• •
•
•
•
• SUNSCREEN The number one way to prevent our skin’s premature aging. UV Protection prevents wrinkling, sagging, and hyper-pigmentation. EYE CRÈME Use morning and evening. Look for an eye cream with antioxidants to fight free radicals. EXFOLIATION It is important to exfoliate our skin. We shed skin cells at an amazing rate every minute of every day. If we don’t get rid of the dead skin cells, they sit on top of our skin and make the appearance dull and dry. MICRODERM ABRASION A great monthly treatment. Laser-cut crystals help exfoliate at a deeper layer than a typical daily skin scrub. BeautiControl’s at-home Microderm Tool and exfoliating polish is formulated with the same aluminum oxide crystals used in the clinical strength treatments. MOISTURIZER Use a daily moisturizer with UV protection. Moisturizer is necessary for our face (and body), to add and maintain hydration throughout the day. This is true even if your skin is oily. RETINOL One of the best anti-aging treatments available. Retinol sweeps away dull cells, and boosts collagen and elastin by stimulating cellular repair at the deepest levels.
Coco Chanel said, “Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve.” This would be so true, however with the advanced treatments available today, we can turn back the clock ! Why Thermography? by Angel Marlow, CNHP, CAHC, CCT Owner, Thermal Imaging Services
“You don’t just wake up in the morning with a health challenge. It’s a process that takes years.” -Dr. Carol Chandler
B
eing able to see the very first beginnings of a possible disease process before it becomes a medical problem is essential to living a long and healthy life. Thermography is an important imaging tool used for prevention. Natural health, Integrative and Chinese medicine all focus on a proactive approach to health. Thermography helps guide us to the areas in your body that are asking for help; often times long before traditional tests or other imaging techniques can detect a possible problem. Thermography uses a highly sensitive infrared camera to map the body’s temperature. It is FDA cleared, uses absolutely zero radiation, is non-invasive and provides a reliable means of graphically mapping and displaying the skin’s surface temperature. By detecting subtle variations in blood vessel activity, our specially trained interpreting doctors can detect thermal heat patterns that could suggest a pre-disease state. At Thermal Imaging Services, we understand the dangers of radiation with regards to breast health. While breast imaging is just a part of what we do, we feel it is important for every woman to realize the dangers of radiating the breasts year after year. Thermography is not a stand-alone screening tool. We work with your health care providers who offer other imaging techniques, blood and functionality tests to help bring the pieces of the puzzle together and help you solve your health challenges and prevent disease.
WHAT IS THE COST AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
THE BENEFITS OF THERMOGRAPHY?
DOES INSURANCE PAY FOR THE SERVICES?
Since we are infrared beings, why would we not want to observe that very important part of ourselves? Because Thermography “sees” your body functioning and changing in “real time” it can be used for overall wellness and early prevention. For instance, heat patterns mean “inflammation”, which makes perfect sense. It is so important to “see” inflammation because it is a very active cause of cancer, heart and cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and much more.
Typically Insurance does not cover the cost of Thermography, but your health savings accounts may be used for this service.
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE LIKE? • The Procedure is completely non-invasive and performed by a certified female technician. • The procedure starts with pre-thermographic imaging instructions that must be followed before your appointment. • You will be asked to complete a health history form and then will meet with the certified technician to review your history. • You will sit in a cool room for a 15 minute temperature acclimation period. • Once your body has reached a steady temperature state in equilibrium with the special temperature conditions of the room, you will be positioned in front of the imaging system so that all of the surfaces are imaged. 8 ciaobellamagazine.com | May/June 2014
The cost includes the original visit, an interpretation by a Medical Doctor trained in reading Thermography, a personalized report with your pictures and a visit to go over the report to understand the verbiage of the report. ***The visit to go over the report takes 30 to 45 minutes. • Full Body @ $550.00 – Initial Visit @1-1/2 hours • Half Body @ $395.00 – Initial Visit @1 hour • Breast @ $235.00 - Initial Visit @45 Minutes
WHERE IS THIS OFFERED? Thermal Imaging Services has a main Location in the Galleria Area @ 3300 Chimney Rock as well as Texas Locations in The Woodlands, Katy, Kingwood, Beaumont, Tyler, and Louisiana locations in Lake Charles, Lafayette and Breaux Bridge.
WHAT TYPE OF EDUCATION DOES THE TECHNICIAN HAVE? The Technician is certified through The Institute for the Advancement of Medical Thermology, Certified Natural Health Practitioner and Certified Technician Member from The American Academy of Thermology.
WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT IS USED? Thermal Imaging Services uses the Gold Standard, High Stability Imaging Radiometric IR Technology, 640AS, 307,200 total Pixel, High Resolution with the patented Total Vision Software for the most clearly defined imagery and the most comprehensive Thermography experience! This really means we use the best camera on the market today. •

I Am Considering Surgery, What Should I Know? by Christopher Jayne, MD, FACOG
S
urgery should be considered when symptoms compromise your quality of life and you are willing to assume surgical risk. Regarding pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) surgery is commonly done when organs like the bladder, uterus, vagina and rectum are falling out of place, and for stress urinary incontinence, the leakage of urine with events like coughing sneezing or exercise. PFDs affect up to 50% of women in their lifetime but less than 10% will ultimately have surgery for this. Risk factors for PFDs include age, vaginal deliveries and prior hysterectomy. Once identified 50% of PFDs will not progress, and simple things like Kegel exercises and lifestyle modifications can reduce symptoms for many women, negating surgery. If however you are considering surgery, consult an experienced surgeon and consider the opinion of a Board Certified Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgeon. The least invasive approach, vaginal surgery, without the use of robots or lasers and without any incisions on your abdomen should always be considered first. This approach is not only the safest but has the quickest return to normal activities post operatively with long standing results as good as all other approaches. Native tissue repairs (NTRs), the use of your own body’s tissues with or without permanent suture material should be compared to graft augmented repairs (GARs) regarding risks and long term results specifically regarding your condition. The general concern for NTRs is that it involves using tissues that have already failed you. That said results have high success rates and low reoperation rates overall. GARs including biologic material mostly obtained from animals or synthetic material specifically polypropylene mesh products also have high suc-
cess rates but have risks and reoperation rates specifically related to the foreign material used. Success after surgery is defined as a reduction or elimination of the symptoms associated with your PFDs, without significant compromise or complication. Although we consider surgery a permanent solution, almost a third of women in their lifetime will need another surgery for symptoms related to PFDs. Reoperation in less than 5 years raises concern for the original procedures performed and the techniques employed. Surgery, no matter how minor, is a serious endeavor for all involved. Surgery on sexual organs carries added concerns, both emotionally and physically for a woman, and demands the most up to date medical and surgical knowledge and skills. If you are considering surgery for PFDs, I am happy to see you for a consultation and comprehensive review of your options, risks and benefits so you can make the best decision for your care. • Dr. Christopher Jayne is Board Certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive surgery, he is certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and he holds a faculty appointment with the Scott Department of Urology at Baylor College of Medicine. In his primary practice with Park Plaza Medical Associates, he has extensive experience treating sexual health issues and pelvic pain in women and specializes in minimally invasive treatments of urogynecologic disorders in an advanced facility with outstanding professional staff. Reconnective
Healing Study Concludes Reconnective Healing Resolves Range of Motion Limitations More Effectively Than Physical Therapy
A
study by researchers at The University of Arizona found that people with range of motion limitations – inability to move without restriction – may find a considerable source of relief in a new form of therapy called Reconnective Healing. In a paper published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, scientists determined that a 10-minute session of Reconnective Healing is “significantly more effective than physical therapy.” The study observed that Reconnective Healing Practitioners without touching the body, “work with their hands to sense . . . the bio fields, which are the energy fields that surround living beings.” The study was conducted by researchers Ann Linda Baldwin, PhD, Kristin Fullmer, PhD and Gary Schwartz, PhD at The University of Arizona’s Laboratory for the Advances in Consciousness and Health, Department of Psychology and Department of Physiology, College of Medicine. The scientists set out to determine if one 10-minute Reconnective Healing session could increase the range of motion and arm elevation of people with medically-diagnosed shoulder restriction and other range-limiting conditions. Often such restrictions are a result of injuries, mastectomies, other surgeries, arthritis, and/or other joint dysfunction. This session with Reconnective Healing was measured against a control group who received physical therapy and other treatment modalities. The subjects’ range of motion was documented before and after each session. The results were definitive and showed that Reconnective Healing
Eric Pearl, DC
was more than two times as effective as physical therapy. Reconnective Healing significantly improved range of motion by an average of 26-degrees in people with restricted shoulder mobility whereas physical therapy averaged only a 12-degree improvement. The researchers observed, “The results suggest that it would be beneficial for physical therapists to be trained in Reconnective Healing… as well as PT so that they could reduce the need for manual work on patients, at least in cases of shoulder limitations.” The Range of Motion Journal study can be found online http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ ecam/2013/329731/.
Reconnective Healing
Reconnective Healing was discovered by Eric Pearl, DC, a doctor who has worked with scientists associated with such prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, to quantify and understand the dynamics of what Stanford Professor Emeritus and researcher Dr. William Tiller has termed the “cutting-edge of information medicine.” Reconnective Healing is based on a spectrum of energy, light and information that
Dr. Eric Pearl demonstrated Reconnective Healing on The Dr. Oz Show.
is self-correcting and can restore the body to a state of optimal balance. Tiller explained, “When information carried through these frequencies is introduced, it creates coherence and order within the field and the body itself.” The result can be seen in the dramatic reports of regeneration instead of degeneration and account after account of apparently unexplainable, often instantaneous and life-long healings.
On Dr. Oz
Recently, Dr. Mehmet Oz decided to learn more about Reconnective Healing so he invited Dr. Pearl to demonstrate a treatment on his show. An audience member with long-term limited arm and shoulder mobility was invited to try it out. After just a few minutes of gentle Reconnective Healing, the audience member described a feeling of warmth in her shoulder. Next she demonstrated the ability to lift her arms her over her head and touch her fingers together, free of pain for the first time in more than ten years. Dr. Oz was admittedly flabbergasted at what he witnessed.
Coming to Houston, July 18-22
Dr. Eric Pearl teaches others how they can utilize Reconnective Healing for themselves. Reconnective Healing is a comprehensive, yet easy-to-learn approach to complementary healthcare. More than 90,000 people around the world have been trained in Reconnective Healing, and there are over 40,000 active practitioners worldwide. For more information about Eric Pearl and upcoming Houston Reconnective Healing events, please visit www.TheReconnection.com or call 323.960.0012. • May/June 2014 | ciaobellamagazine.com 11
Finding Health
JENNIFER’S WAY by Hollis Hood
W
ith beauty, talent, and an impressive body of work encompassing film, television and theater, Jennifer Esposito has enjoyed an awardwinning Hollywood career. Among her credits she’s held starring roles in the hit film Crash and appeared in the CBS television series Blue Bloods. These days the role she’s taken on is quite a bit different, but perhaps her most important. Esposito now serves as an advocate for those with celiac disease, a disease that she has suffered with most of her life. During her years of struggle with an undiagnosed case of celiac disease which took its toll on her health, her relationships and her career she wondered, “Is anybody listening? Is anybody ever going to hear me? Do the doctors even have an answer-or a clue?” In her newly released autobiography, Jennifer’s Way: My Journey With Celiac Disease: What Doctors Don’t Tell You and How You Can Learn to Live Again ($26, Da Capo Lifelong Books) she recounts her unrelenting search to find help. Before her diagnosis she was branded as “crazy” and dismissed by the medical community as suffering from a psychosomatic illness. “I was told that what I was thinking and feeling didn’t matter, and that was one of the biggest reasons why I wrote the book,” said Esposito. Her deepest desire is to be the voice for those who haven’t been heard by main12 ciaobellamagazine.com | May/June 2014
stream medicine and to let Celiacs know that they are not alone in their struggle. Her passion to help others inspired her to create The Jennifer’s Way Foundation for Celiac Education which will receive a portion of the book’s proceeds. An underdiagnosed disease that affects one in 133 Americans, Celiac is an autoimmune disorder that manifests itself in typical allergic reactions such as itching, but can also cause panic attacks, anxiety, radical mood swings, muscle pain, confusion, loss of hair, yellowing skin and a host of other conditions that are normally treated with pills and not traced to a common root cause. “I was on my own. None of the doctors I was going to told me what was happening to me, or what should I do.” She found helpful information in chat rooms and with other people who had the disease and other extreme allergies. Her condition wreaked havoc on her career. “I would drag myself onto the set and be in intense pain. The makeup girls used to complain because my skin would be so yellow that I was a challenge to deal with. The allergy was so severe before I was diagnosed, my hair even stated falling out. “ In a particularly unnerving incident during filming, a tooth once popped out of her mouth. One of her panic attacks landed her in the “psych” ward of the hospital. “I told the nurse I had celiac disease and it could cause panic attacks. She replied that she had been a nurse for 50 years and had never heard of it.” Esposito didn’t stay, but while she was there she did observe the patients’ food --breads, cake, many items with gluten and dairy that can cause harm to celiacs.
“My priorities have really changed. I think I have a better understanding of what really matters in life now... COVER GIRL

EXCERPT FROM “JENNIFER’S WAY” “Celiac disease is a common autoimmune disease which means that for some unknown reason (probably part genetics, part immunological and part environmental) your immune systems gets confused by gluten thinking it is some dangerous foreign invader like bacteria or a virus. Celiac disease causes the production of antibodies to the gluten protein, which then begin attacking the small intestine. The villi, which are the microscopic protuberances along the inner wall of your small intestine covered with tiny hairs that absorb nutrients from food, get slaughtered during this immune system assault. These villi are responsible for making (or manufacturing) vitamin D3, as well as the important brain hormone or neurotransmitter called serotonin. This is why there are so many brain and nerve problems associated with celiac disease (like depression, anxiety, memory loss, “brain fog,” and insomnia). Most of the serotonin in your body is made in the small intestine, not the brain. Over the course of years, they (the villi) become completely flattened and damaged so they can’t absorb the nutrients. Your body becomes malnourished, like you are on a desert island, slowly starving. To survive, your body begins taking nutrients where it can--first from your bones, then from your nervous system (where it attacked me), and from wherever else it can easily extract them. That leads to a laundry list of health problems related to malnutrition that will manifest differently for every person.”
Jennifer Esposito has a lot to smile about thanks to newfound health, a new book, a new bakery and a mission to help others who are suffering from celiac disease.
Esposito believed no one was listening until five years ago when her gastroenterologist called her after testing and definitively informed her that she had one of the worst cases of celiac he had ever seen. “I was off gluten for months and in so much pain I couldn’t even sleep. It was agony just to walk my dogs.” Another doctor suggested she might have a problem with dairy. Anything that causes inflammation aggravates autoimmune diseases and when she gave up dairy in addition to glutencontaining products the reactions were finally gone. “It just makes me crazy that doctors aren’t saying anything about food allergies and are just prescribing pills. Just try it for two weeks and see if cutting out gluten and dairy doesn’t make a difference. My sister also had constant pain in her muscles and joints. I told her get off gluten and dairy for two weeks, and sure enough she felt 100% better,” said Esposito. Once diagnosed, Esposito was determined not to let celiac disease ruin her love of food, so she taught herself to bake. After experimenting in her kitchen she created recipes that were both delicious and safe to eat. Last year with her boyfriend and business partner, British model 14 ciaobellamagazine.com | May/June 2014
Louis Dowler she opened Jennifer’s Way Bakery, a gluten-free, dairyfree, soy-free, peanut-free, allergy-free, organic bakery in New York ‘s East Village. “If it wasn’t for him, this place wouldn’t exist,” she said. Together they renovated a several hundred square foot facility where they work every day. “He has realized how important this really is to people,” she said. At first Dowler didn’t realize how important having a totally gluten free environment was for the bakery. But when he was asked to take his gluten-containing sandwich outside to eat, the reality of eliminating possible contamination made sense. Esposito and Dowler will soon open a 13,000 square foot strictly gluten-free factory in Queens for producing her safe, nutritious products for people everywhere. “In the hospital, the food is full of gluten and dairy. You are at the mercy of the system,” she said. “I want to get my gluten-free bakery products into the hospitals.” Esposito wants to set the gold standard for foods labeled “glutenfree.” “Everybody wants to be on the bandwagon and make money so they put ‘gluten-free’ on the label,” she said. “Just because a product is labeled gluten free doesn’t always guarantee that it is. Chips for example, can be made in same facility with wheat products and that’s a huge problem. If I get even the tiniest amount of gluten, my blood pressure drops extremely low, and it’s very dangerous.” “Celiac is aggravated by stress such as life in the big city,” she said. To find balance she, Dowler and their two golden retrievers divide their time between a place in Brooklyn and a home of “relaxed elegance” in the Hamptons. It is in East Hampton that she finds peace and renewal. “Now, I really just want to live on a farm, grow vegetables and make good things for people to eat that are safe.” Esposito said she believes educating people about celiac and providing clean, good-tasting food may be her calling in life but intends to continue her acting career as well. “My priorities have really changed. I think I have a better understanding of what really matters in life now,” she said. “It isn’t about money, it’s more about love.” • Read more about Jennifer Esposito's mission at www.jennifersway.org and www.jenniferswaybakery.org. Beauty Confessional
As confessed to Hollis Hood
ciao bella! “What are your skin care secrets?” ESPOSITO “As far as beauty products I am so
sensitive to everything, I have to be careful. Gluten is often in products and if you're allergic to it internally, you're allergic to it externally. I use oils such as coconut oil, straight vitamin E or C on my skin. It has to be clean and very pure for me to put it on my skin.”
ciao bella! “What is your favorite cosmetic line?” ESPOSITO “Cosmetics have to be very clean and
natural. I don’t use a lot of cosmetics but when I do I use Caudalie. I use sprays on my face.”
ciao bella! “What hair care products do you use?” ESPOSITO “Alterna which states that it’s gluten-
free. I was using another product once and my scalp started burning terribly because it had gluten in it.”
ciao bella! “What is your fitness routine?”
ESPOSITO “I try to run when I physically feel like I can. I also lift weights. Honestly I like to do almost anything. With the bakery sometimes my energy will be low and I have to be careful, and sometimes I just don’t have time.”
ciao bella! “What do you do to manage stress?”
ESPOSITO “I am a big advocate for meditation, it’s the best stress reliever I know. It gives you time to listen to your body. I also make it a point to lie down on the floor with my dogs every day. They enjoy it and so do I. It’s very restful and they have such beautiful energy, they always make me feel peaceful.”
ciao bella! “What is your diet secret?”
ESPOSITO “Clean, organic food. Vegetables. Simple food. At the bakery we test food four times to make sure it is pure when it goes to customers. I don’t have a problem with weight. I’m fond of my gluten-free tasty cupcakes.”
ciao bella! “What is your personal style like and
what are your fashion favorites?” ESPOSITO “Something simple that reflects beautiful energy, casual, relaxed. I’m not much of trend follower anymore. I like the line by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, The Row, it’s flowing.”
ciao bella! “What are your biggest beauty secrets?” ESPOSITO “It’s not a secret, just be kind to
yourself, eat right, sleep. Everyone can be a beautiful person when they take care of themselves and have worthwhile goals.” •

ers, or girls who just like to be total tomboys, designer Hilary Genga has come to the rescue. Hilary is a Malibu mom who started pairing her husband’s swim trunks with her cute bikini tops while she waited for a women’s swimsuit to come along that was both comfortable and stylish. Tired of waiting, she created Trunkettes with business partner Kristen Evenson in 2008 to celebrate personal style, not cover so-called ‘problem areas.’ Genga's Trunkettes line, with its feminine spin on men's swim trunks is a favorite of many, with a large celebrity fan base that includes Carmen Electra, Carrie Underwood, Felicity Huffman, Gigi Hadid, and Real Housewives of Orange County Gretchen Rossi. The Trunkettes collection has now expanded to include tankinis, one-pieces, dresses, sarongs and a new line, KrickyLu by Trunkettes. 50th Anniversary Swimsuit issue as well as Glamour, In Touch, The New York Post, Entrepreneur, The Huffington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and the TODAY Show. “Most women like the upper half of their body more,” observed Hilary. “The bottom half seems to be the problem. That’s why I created Trunkettes, to be hip and cool and sexy. This is how I want to dress.” Entrepreneur Hilary Genga who continues to grow her company, was recently mentored by Daymond John of ABC's Shark Tank. Trunkettes is currently working on a new line of surf shirts that offer better sun protection. She's also designing neoprene suits in two gorgeous prints – a rainbow tech print with an Aztec feel and a teal print with the look of lace. Next year she's launching an upscale line of tiny bikinis with matching trunks and in 2016 she plans to launch a childrens' line. Shoppers can find them online at www.trunkettes.com.
TIPS Top Houston image consultant Helen Perry offers tips for swimwear shopping, “a task most women approach with fear and dread,” she said. “Remember color, shape, and proportion as you shop. As for color, you want your very best tone(s) when choosing a swimsuit because this is when you’re showing the most skin and wearing the least makeup. For larger bustlines, halters are your friend. To conceal the tummy, ruching and color blocking hide a multitude of sins. Any diagonal patterns are slenderizing. Always avoid horizontal stripes.” Perry has been dressing Texas women for more than 30 years and knows the pitfalls of trends that may be hot on the runways but adisaster in real life. “In swimwear, you usually need at least one size up from your dress size. If you have a fuller bottom and
65 percent of women are one to two sizes larger in the lower torso than the upper, wear a sarong wrap to minimize the hips. The sarong cover-up is a great staple. Also, the black one piece suit is always classic and never goes out of style. “Avoid patterns on any area you want to minimize,” Perry advises. “Above all, be comfortable in your suit. Take caution with trends like the fishnet or beading. If you want to use your suit more than one season and you have small children who are fascinated with the beads, wear a cover-up when you are holding your kids. If you are buying a suit and you want to tan, buy one with straps that may be pulled down instead of a halter to avoid tan lines. Last but not least, Perry suggests, “Take your photo in the suit and turn your camera upside down, look at it and you will see yourself more objectively in a photo than in a mirror.” • May/June 2014 | ciaobellamagazine.com 17

ACTING
F.A.S.T
COULD SAVE A LIFE FROM STROKE by the SouthWest Affiliate of the American Heart Association
I
n light of American Stroke Month in May, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association encourages people to do two things to save a life from stroke: • Learn your personal stroke risk. • Learn the stroke warning signs to be able to recognize and respond to a stroke F.A.S.T. Every 40 seconds a stroke occurs in the United States, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Stroke is the No. 4 leading cause of death among U.S. adults. It kills 129,000 people a year – that’s about one in every 19 deaths. This May, the AHA/ ASA want everyone to take a stroke assessment aimed at helping individuals better understand their stroke risk. Knowing if you are at risk for stroke is greatly important, because many risk factors can be modified and controlled. The online, free assessment scores an individual based on a variety of health related questions, including blood pressure. The No. 1 risk factor for stroke is high blood pressure. About 77 percent of people who suffer their first stroke have blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg. Lowering
your top number by 10 or bottom number by 5 may cut your risk of stroke in half. The free stroke assessment can be found at StrokeAssociation.org/strokemonth. If you are at risk, work with your doctor on a prevention plan. In addition to taking the stroke risk assessment quiz, AHA/ ASA want everyone to know how to best recognize the signs of a stroke and respond. AHA’s Together to End Stroke, nationally sponsored by Covidien, teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people recognize a stroke and what to do: • Face Drooping - Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. • Arm Weakness - Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? • Speech Difficulty - Is speech slurred? Are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like: “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? • Time to call 9-1-1 - If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately.

Stroke is the No. 1 preventable cause of disability. When you recognize a stroke and act F.A.S.T. by calling 9-1-1, the person having the stroke has a greater chance of getting appropriate care to improve the outcome. Additional stroke signs include: Sudden severe headache with no known cause; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; or sudden confusion or trouble understanding. Together to End Stroke offers a free “Spot a Stroke F.A.S.T.” mobile app for iOS and Android phones, including the warning signs and a searchable map to find local hospitals recognized for heart and stroke care. •

Getting To Know Girls Only Co-Stars, TRACY AHERN and SHONDRA MARIE Actresses. We watch them on the big screen. We plan special evenings to see them in on stage. We honor their live performances with standing ovations. But who are they in real life? How did they find their way into the spotlight?

To find out, Ciao Bella! sat down with two of Houston’s busiest, most visible actresses – Tracy Ahern and Shondra Marie. The two have been starring for months in Houston’s longest-running show, Girls Only – The Secret Comedy of Women at Main Street Theater Chelsea Market. To date, more than 15,000 Houston women have hooted and hollered at the show’s hilarity. The blockbuster comedy was Houston’s longest-playing stage production in 2012-13 and it has earned the same accolade again this year, brought back for an additional four-month encore engagement. Tracy Ahern has appeared in more than 125 performances of the show, making her currently Houston's busiest and most employed actress. By Sunday, May 18th when the

show closes its doors for the last time, Shondra Marie will have starred in more than 50 performances. For both Tracy and Shondra, years of groundwork preceded the moment of opportunity. TRACY AHERN, like so many performers, fell in love with acting at an early age. She dates the start of her career to fifth grade and her very first play, Old McDonald’s Follies. She was 13 when her family moved to The Woodlands, where she spent most of junior high and high school wondering how she could become a “professional” actress. Tracy stopped wondering and took action enrolling at Baylor University, where she earned her B.A. in Theatre Arts. She then followed her passion to New York City, where she studied for two more years at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre. With her role of Blanca Paloma in How The West Was Won, her career was off and running. Next came her opportunity to play a favorite role, Glinda the Good Witch of the North in the national tour of The Wizard of Oz. With 16 years in theater, Ahern has delighted Houston audiences since 2000 in dozens of different roles. Her resume also includes appearances in commercials and four films. “Most plays offer only very limited employment,” Tracy said, “maybe two weeks of rehearsal, a two-week run for the show – and then it’s ‘Pray for the next audition.’” Steady work is a blessing to any Houston actress, according to Ahern. “Before this show, my longest acting job was three months in Seussical the Musical, and Tracy Ahern

I thought that was heaven. Nine months starring in Girls Only, this is once-in-a-lifetime. There just aren’t many shows hilarious enough to draw 15,000 Houston women to our little 250-seat theater on Montrose,” she said. And what does Tracy do when she’s not on stage? For starters, she and her husband Brian are parents to three preschool-aged children, two boys adopted from Ethiopia, and a baby girl adopted here in Houston. “As you can imagine, I have to be the queen of multitaskers,” she said. “Each day, I run my errands and care for the children till five or so. At that point, my husband takes over, and I rush to the theater for costume and make-up. Home at eleven, then get some sleep before the kids wake us up – too early,” she said. “So much for the glamour of show biz – but I wouldn’t have it any other way!” SHONDRA MARIE, a long-time Houston stage favorite, also ventured onto the Yellow Brick Road at an early age. As a 13-year-old, she saw her best friend’s sister perform in the community theater in Jackson, Tennessee. Shondra was immediately bitten by the acting bug. “I want to do that!” she declared to herself – and she’s been performing ever since. Whether it’s comedy, drama, musicals, playing various instruments, dancing, improvisation or singing, she loves all the performing arts. One of her first parts was as an Indian in Peter PanThe Musical. “I may not remember my lines from yesterday’s rehearsal,” she told Ciao Bella!, “but I can still sing you those songs from Peter Pan.” Shondra enjoyed an unconventional education that included public, private and (from 8th grade through 12th) home school. She then studied theater at nearby

Union University, graduating in Communications Arts. At the graduate level, she studied at the University of Houston, where she especially appreciated the tutelage of two-time Tony winner and distinguished professor, Stuart Ostrow, producer of the hit Broadway musical comedy, Pippin. What does she most like about acting? “It’s the place where I feel closest to my Creator – when I’m creating – even more than in a church,” said Shondra. Her husband is Todd Boring, founder and producer of the Houston Improv Festival. Other important members of their household are two black kittens, Blackstrap and Molasses. “They are actual brothers,” Shondra reports, “and they act like it.” Ciao Bella asked Tracy to give us a quick peek into Girls Only. “It’s a funny, funny look at growing up female – childhood diaries, the days in Brownies, puberty, that first bra, discovering boys, menopause, the things we save in our memory boxes, best girlfriends – the whole shooting match.” Critics call the show “hilarious.” Both Shondra and Tracy report that the best part about the show is not the steady employment. “It’s the pure joy of seeing the audience laugh with us,” said Tracy, “as we celebrate our journey from girlhood into womanhood, right on through to the golden years!” • Girls Only - The Secret Comedy of Women runs until May 18. DEC MY ROOM! by Jennifer Heath

he hospital is not a fun place to stay, especially for children. The many volunteers at Dec My Room work to make the experience a little less overwhelming. In 2007, the organization began after a family friend found out he would be at Texas Children’s Hospital undergoing cancer treatments. The friend was anxious and uncertain, so Kendall Plank and her mother, Susan, began asking some questions. They asked what the little boy liked, and the answer was anything dealing with the University of Texas. “So Kendall and Susan completely decorated the room from the ceiling to the floor, everything UT,” said Kathy French with Dec My Room. “The patient was thrilled. A transformation from scared and sad to happy
and engaged had occurred.” Watching him undergo that change stuck with then 11-yearold Kendall.“Mom, we’ve got to decorate more kids’ hospital rooms,” she said. Since then, Dec My Room has done just that. Each year, the organization decorates more than 130 pediatric and young adult patient rooms in Houston. “It’s all about the children,” said Dec My Room President Susan Plank. Susan works on decorating more than two dozen rooms herself each year. In addition, more than 100 Houston volunteers work throughout the year to transform the plain, dull children’s hospital rooms into something personal, unique and special to each patient. “Our army of volunteers is growing,” French said. “We recently enlisted 60 associates of the AMLI luxury apartment May/June 2014 | ciaobellamagazine.com 21

Dec My Room volunteers spend approximately $300 redecorating pediatric and young adult hospital patients' rooms. management group. They will be dedicating an entire day of service at Shriner’s Hospital for Children by decorating up to 20 pediatric patient rooms.” Because each child, and the situation, is unique, the service is different too. A Certified Child Life Specialist conducts an interview with a child who will be spending at least three weeks in a local hospital. Dec My Room officials then pass along a wish list to volunteers who can shop and decorate for the child within three days. “Sometimes the patients are able to tell us exactly where they want the items placed on the walls and windows to ensure optimal viewing,” French said. “In other cases, when the patient feels well enough, they leave the room and want to reenter their special healing space and be surprised.” Dec My Room budgets $300 for each child’s room. Money is raised through two major fundraisers each year. In the Spring, Love’s in Fashion with Tootsies takes place. During the Fall, a ladies luncheon is hosted downtown. “We have had an increase of 30 percent in the number of rooms we have decorated this year compared to last,” French said. “We need to continue to source donations.”
Dec My Room now has chapters in Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, Boston Children’s Hospital and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. In Houston, volunteers work in M.D. Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital. They also decorate rooms in Shriner’s Hospital for Children’s in the Texas Medical Center and Galveston. “We are looking to place a chapter at every major pediatric hospital in America,” French said. “Once hospital services understand the benefits Dec My Room offers, they start getting excited about the extension of patient care and adopt Dec My Room services as adjunctive therapy to more comprehensively provide supportive care to both the patient and their family.” Recently, volunteers worked with the Child Life Specialists at M.D. Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital. One patient described her favorite color, TV shows and music. A junior volunteer developed a new playlist and gave the patient a new Shuffle iPod with uplifting songs. Dec My Room

volunteers brought in purple wall decals, a soft lavender blanket, lace pillows and purple pens and a journal. “She really could not believe that we were there to support and encourage her long-term healing,” French said about the little girl. “She started crying. We just hugged her and expressed our dream for her complete healing.” The patients and recipients of Dec My Room often feel such gratitude. When they are discharged from the hospital, the children get to take home all the decorations, decals and items donated. “Often these children and young adults can’t believe that they are so lucky to have these new decorations,” French said. “The transformation of these hospital rooms and the patient’s attitude is real.” • To make a donation or to sign up to volunteer, visit www.decmyroom.org.
GPS Your Career 3 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR LEADERSHIP TRAJECTORY by Wendy Capland
W
e all know how important it is to navigate and manage our own careers. However, it’s not always easy to know what to do or even when the best timing is to do it. Personal circumstances, boss’s opinions of us, and corporate restructurings all play a pivotal part in impacting the success of our leadership and career trajectory. Our tolerance for these external factors and how they impact our lives varies from time to time, but ultimately I believe we are the only ones who know what’s best; even if we have moments of being unsure of what move to make next. Years ago when I was a corporate employee and ready to come back to work after maternity leave, I decided coming back part-time might be a good option to help me transition after having a baby. My boss saw my entrance back into the work force differently than I did. She actually told me that she did not think it possible to be both a serious career woman AND be a mother and suggested that I think about choosing which one of these was more important to me. After getting over the shock (and the potential unlawfulness of her comment), my tolerance for her navigating my career in this way was, as you might imagine, ZERO! So, I quit. I had no job, a 3 month old, an 18 month old, and was determined my career would resemble something I wanted and NOT something someone else wanted for me. After managing through this unfortunate set of circumstances myself (ultimately not as unfortunate, as this conversation was the catalyst for starting my own business!), I learned many things. Here are three that helped me, and might help you as well, as you think about how to navigate your wants and your circumstances most effectively.
PAY ATTENTION Even though we believe our careers are ours to manage, if we work for someone else, we often find ourselves at the affect of our boss’s idea as to what career move is available to us or not. Pay attention to the
May/June 2014 | ciaobellamagazine.com 23
feedback you receive from your boss and your boss’s boss. You need to start reading between the lines, even if you don’t like what you see. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard an executive tell me they gave one of their employees some pretty tough feedback, but when I check in with the employee, they say that nothing unusual or critical in nature was discussed. My conclusion is that most of us really do believe we have spoken straight and clear when giving feedback, but in reality what was said isn’t necessarily heard as we intended. As a result, we have to get better at reading between the lines and asking lots of questions to obtain clarity so we can better plot a course for our next move.
NAVIGATE Map out the path to the promotion, job, or title you desire and feel you deserve. No one wants what you want more than you do and no one will take the wheel for you. You are in the driver’s seat, but beware; this journey is not for weenies. You will need to stay alert, read the signs, and stay focused on your destination. It’s OK to take a detour
or two as no career progression is traveled in a straight line. Keep your eyes on your destination otherwise it becomes easy to take too many side streets just waiting for “them” to change their minds and see just how talented you really are.
RE-CALCULATE To be fully satisfied in your work, you first have to decide what it is that you want, and then commit to having it in a singularly focused kind of way. It does happen, although rarely, that the Universe just guides and glides us along without effort towards our dreams and goals. Most of the time however, we actually have to do stuff to make what we want become a reality. It takes persistence, commitment and acting outside your comfort zone to obtain the brass ring you have your sights on. Have conversations with key stakeholders (bosses, mentors and a coach) as to what’s required to readjust your actions, recalculate a misguided direction you may have made, and to understand clearly the gap between where you are and where you want to ultimately be.
24 ciaobellamagazine.com | May/June 2014
SUMMARY As you navigate your career, no matter how old or young you are, you will either head towards something you want or escape from something that’s not working for you, like in my case with my boss. Giving yourself time to think about your career progression actually allows you to work ON your career and not just be IN it. It is a smart thing to do and will pay off by putting you in the driver’s seat over and over again. • Wendy Capland is known as one of America’s top women leaders on the topic of leadership development. Bell-A-strology A
fter the relentless pressure of the Cardinal Cross in late April and the series of eclipses we survived, May will feel like a walk in the park as the opportunity to become lighthearted once again returns. Two big improvements in May occur when Mars goes direct in Libra on 5/19, allowing us to enjoy our relationship life once again without so much discontent and hostility. On 5/24 Jupiter and Saturn rebalance our lives as hopeful feelings return in our personal and financial lives. The New Moon in Gemini on 5/28 highlights the power of our mind and thoughts, encouraging us to use them wisely. The only somewhat challenging event in May is the Full Moon in Scorpio on 5/14. This powerful time period is also influenced by the presence of Venus in Taurus making strong aspects in Mars, Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter from 5/11-18. We will become clear about our desires and fears during this period. Action for changing circumstances follows as Mars becomes active again on 5/19. Life seems to be turning upside down so take it slow and trust the changes will bring a better life.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) As Jupiter moves you forward, expect to feel more lighthearted and optimistic than you have been in months. Struggles with health and work are lessened, and limits in your relationship life don't have as much power to disappoint you. Mars gets moving on 5/19 and your career and personal life get back in balance. By month's end you will feel more secure and optimistic about your future. Mercury enters your sign on 5/29, so plan to spend time focusing on your own needs.

The New Moon in Gemini on 5/28 is a great time to reconnect with friends and celebrate your success. Your peaceful, confident self re-emerges as Mars gets back in balance on 5/19. Life will generally be easier for you from now on.
VIRGO (August 23-September 22) The presence of so many planets in Taurus and Capricorn in favorable aspect to you should give you unique opportunities to solve problems that have seemed unsolvable in recent months. The New Moon on 5/28 brings great opportunity at work and begins a new phase of your career. Your finances straighten out after Mars changes direction on 5/19.
LIBRA (September 23-October 23) The chaos in your life begins to settle down after Mars goes direct on 5/18. You will feel less anxious and aggravated after this time. Your home life should be in better balance the second half of May and your financial obligations should also seem lighter. This is a great time to get away and do as little as possible. It would be great for you to travel in the last half of this month and you will find it easier to meet kindred spirits as well. The Full Moon period of 5/14 is very volatile, so lay low when you can, and wait for Mars to settle down on 5/19 before resolving conflicts with others.
PISCES (February 19-March 20) Focus on your spiritual nature and intuition this month. The balancing of water energy gives you a boost and the New Moon on 5/28 is a great time to host a party, take a vacation or enjoy some alone time. This is a letting go period for you after months of intensity. You will see concrete progress more readily now. Start the visualization function to amplify your welldeserved results.

No Apologies by Michelle Leigh Smith
B
arbie makes no apologies for who she is. The girl who filled countless hours for the Baby Boomers is all grown up, with a sleek new swimsuit that hugs her sculpted curves. This updated black and white mitered stripe suit is edgier than the 1959 strapless, and graces the pages of this year’s 50th anniversary Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. What’s remarkable is even at 55, it’s quite clear that Barbie is made of far less plastic than many models seen frolicking on the beach. Seeing Barbie in a place of distinction stirs the memories of what she meant to a generation of women.“ My Barbie was perfection then and although she was not on a shelf to be merely looked at; she lived a life that at that time (the mid-60s) existed only in the limits of our imaginations, and the barriers to those dreams we did not yet perceive,” recalled Houston attorney Victoria Gardner Wall, Rice University, Class of 1978 and University of Texas School of Law Class of ’81. “I remember the nearly unending complete ensembles. The ones from the store were in these plastic encapsulated packages screaming, `You may look, but not touch unless you take me with you!’ But the very best ensembles my mother designed and made. Those were the haute couture of Barbie clothes and far exceeded the outfits available at the store. I remember my favorite, a strapless dress with a fitted bodice of satin, subtle in sheen and a floating skirt made solely from multiple layers of chiffon panels. Mother designed the skirt with the perfect proportion of fabric so it fluttered delicately when my sisters and I played with our Barbies.” “The clothes she painstakingly designed and sewed represent my mother at her best. Each outfit came with jewelry she made to complete the ensemble. My mother still has no idea what a marvelous gift she gave to me and my two little sisters.” Interestingly, Wall said her mother, Peggy Hart Gardner, never thought her sewing skills were any good because her aunts were superb seamstresses who used no patterns and made no mistakes. Take a cue from Barbie, Mrs. Gardner. No apologies necessary! “We used our Barbie cases to make our Barbie house,” recalled jewelry artist Julie Fordes. “Some girls had the Barbie Dream House – we set up our cases in a circle and left the labyrinth up for days.” Rebecca Carrum, mother of five, recalls playing in the wooden dollhouse her father built for her with some hand me down Barbies from a teenage neighbor. “Barbie was independent, modern, trendy and had a glamorous life,” said interior designer Chandra Stone. “I am sure we had a house for Barbie and a convertible, in which Ken would pick up Barbie for a date.” When visiting the Children’s Museum in London in about 1985, along with seeing Queen Victoria’s doll house, they had a fantastic ex28 ciaobellamagazine.com | May/June 2014
THOSE WHO’VE ALWAYS ADMIRED
BARBIE’S BLACK AND WHITE ONE-PIECE,
CAN NOW OWN A LIFE-SIZED VERSION. The ‘Bianca’ Mitered Strip Swimsuit by Robin Piccone is available at nordstrom.com for $138.
According to CNN, Barbie was considered a rebel who embodied both “the sensuality of Marilyn Monroe and the innocence of Debbie Reynolds.” Mattel reports that 300,000 Barbie dolls sold in 1959 and today one Barbie doll is sold every three seconds somewhere in the world.
hibit of a Modern house for Barbie with a pool and a car. It was so cool, deco styled and oh, I would have loved to have that as a child!” America’s favorite doll was designed in 1959 by Ruth Handler who watched her daughter Barbara play with adult paper dolls, imagining them in adult roles. Ruth introduced Barbie at the New York Toy Fair, selling for a whopping $3 and elevating the company she founded with her husband Elliot from a small toy company to a corporate giant. Handler was determined to give girls a way to play, to imagine and to dream. “It was those girls who understood me and made me an instant success,” Handler shared with Barbie Collector, an online Barbie blog. “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be,” Ruth said. “Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.” Over time, I’ve become an icon, and as with all icons, I’ve been pulled into the cultural conversation,” said Barbie in a recent New York Times op-ed piece. “ My bathing suit now hangs beside a Presidential power suit, Pastry Chef hat, and Astronaut gear in a wardrobe reflecting the more than 150 careers I’ve pursued to illustrate for girls that they can achieve anything for which they aim,” exclaimed Barbie. “And yet, I am still seen as just a pretty face. It’s simpler to
keep me in a box—and since I am a doll— chances are that’s where I’ll stay. I, for one, am honored to join the legendary swimsuit models. The word “model,” like the word “Barbie®,” is often dismissed as a poseable plaything with nothing to say. And yet, those featured are women who have broken barriers, established empires, built brands, branched out into careers as varied as authors, entrepreneurs and philanthropists. They are all great examples of confident and competent women.” Ciao Bella! proudly asks, “Isn’t it time we teach young girls to celebrate who they are? Isn’t there room for capable and captivating? It’s time to stop boxing in potential. Like Barbie, a woman should feel confident to launch a career in a swimsuit, as did Tyra Banks. Women should feel free to wear pink to a college interview or to lead a company regardless of how many heads she turns. “The reality of today is that girls can go anywhere and be anything,” said publisher, Heidi Suprun. “They should celebrate who they are and never have to apologize for it.” • Michelle Leigh Smith is a Houston journalist. Her mother, Carlene Smith, made her pink velvet pants with a matching pink silk V-neck and a turquoise ice skating costume, trimmed in pink, ready for the day she came home from the hospital to have her tonsils out.
