Chile: To put an end to tax evasion is an ethical challenge for the country, states the Director of the SII. The control of tax evasion is a moral imperative not only for tax administrations, but also for the State and for the whole country, said Mr. Julio Pereira, Director of the Internal Revenue Service (SII), at the opening of the 46th Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT) General Assembly, which takes place in Santiago. “Tax evasion not only erodes tax On the picture, a general view of the opening session. The CIAT’s Executive Secretary, income, compromising tax policy, Mr. Márcio F. Verdi, is addressing the audience but also breaches the economic public order by allowing an unfair competition between the economic agents. Whoever evade taxes unfairly compete, by marketing their goods and services at lower prices and with higher profit margins than those who duly pay their taxes”, he said. Delegates from the 40 CIAT member countries and observers, in addition to international organizations representatives such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), among others, attend the four days event, which main topic is “Improving the performance of the tax administration: Evasion control and taxpayer assistance.”
