Design, Innovation & Brand Management PSEAD 2016
WHO ARE YOU?
Introduction At first, we were disconnected, different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Actually, we were strangers who lived in the same place. We built walls to protect ourselves from other people, but when the time goes by that ice walls were melted. We knew each other better, a gap between relationship was decreased. As a consequence, the strangers can become friends.

Who are you? I love traveling and enjoy meeting new people. I have worked in a production house as an art director and graphic designer in a company before. All of my experience in the office let me find myself. I am not suitable for sitting in front of a computer all day all night and didn’t have time to go anywhere. So I wanted to change it desperately! That’s why I’m here!

How about PSEAD? Before I joined the 10 week PSEAD course, in my imagination I thought it was just a normal language course, but I was rather wrong. I think I am so lucky to study this course. I have learnt so many different things in a totally different way that I had learned before, such as how to get inspiration and also learn how to present ideas in an effective way. Moreover, I also made friends from different countries. We’ve learnt a lot about each other, we exchanged our cultures, ideas, experiences. All these things are not just communicated in English but we also learn to live together.
Where do your inspirations come from? All of my inspirations come from traveling. I believe when people go to new places, they always get something from it. When I was young, I never thought about language until when I started to travel abroad. Suddenly, I knew if I wanted to travel around the world, I needed to learn English. In my opinion, this experience is so powerful to get an inspiration. Finally, I hope my inspiration will push me to be successfu in my career in the future.
How about PSEAD?
What about the future?
Time is rushing on the 5-week pre-sessional class, I learn about how to express myself, and how to work more effectively on my main course. And I love my life in Farnham, I really appreciate the experience of living here.
After university, I want to know how to sell my ideas well. When I graduate, I would like to find a internship chance at design company in UK learning more about the design marketer or design researcher, accumulate my experience, after it I hope I can have my own company one day. I will return to Taiwan and find a job related to design management. Finally, become a professional creative design manager, and start my own company to complete my own dream.
What was your favourite work on the UCA PSEAD course? I worked on a project reminding people to read real books, this was a group work, so I learnt how to discuss and share my opinion. I'm lucky that our group members are friendly - we made the decision really fast and had a good time working together. The overall aim of the ‘Art Activism’ project was not only to promote the Brick Lane Bookshop but also to make people concern more about the value of the traditional paper book. I think the ideas that emerged will help me crack on with the main course study, which is Design, Innovation and Brand Management in the upcoming future.

Who are you? I'm a person who came from engineering background, but worked in a design studio. I'm short of aesthetic skills, but good at thinking outside of a box. Basically, I'm just an ordinary bloke like those you could see everywhere, I don't want to be another brick in the wall. I hate studying, but now, I am becoming this dude who is studying abroad. I'm quite contradictory. Essentially, I'm not an ambitious person, but I want to do something big someday. I'm quite reserved most of time. But my brain is always spinning.

What is your expectation?
My philosophy in design
After years of a nomadic life, I'm coming back to society again. Now, I want to find out how my generations’ designers and artists think. Frankly, what I am going to study and learn is not the main purpose for me. What I want, is to experience various lifestyles and to figure out if my philosophy of design fits the real world. Then, to find out what if I shall modify the ways of thinking. Also, I want to see what undiscovered potential I have and what I can achieve overseas.
Design is a creative process for solving problems. Therefore, the most important thing is function, either physical way or mental way. The methods need to be effective, practical, logical and human. The world is changing everyday, the problems we are facing are unstoppable, too. So, the methods of design need to be innovative. In other words, designer cannot stop observe and act accordingly.
How about PSEAD? Here, I met a big and friendly family. I love all of our tutors because they are trying their best to help each of us improve our English skills. Although sometimes we ask them other questions which are not of our course but about life in Farnham or UK, they all will answer every question very patiently. Besides, all of them are so cute, I can feel that they don't want to just be our tutors, but also support us in the holistic development. Because of them, I have a very good and lovely impression of UCA.
What is your favourite project in during the PSEAD course? I am a 5-week course student, which means I only did two projects. I loved ‘Art Activism’, especially our little video of this project. I was the director and also did the video editing at the same time. When I thought about how to attract people to pay more attention to our main idea, a small clue popped into my mind… I connected the desire of reading a real book with the sensation of involving all senses. Fortunately, the concept worked! Most of the people who saw this video could get the message that we wanted to remind people of the important value of reading traditional books. So I like this work very much! And this is our video link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT2Z5JLM4fo&feature=youtu.be
What are your expectations? Firstly in my main course, I want to learn more methods not only about how to create my own brand but also about how to create innovatively and how to sell ideas or how to convince people to invest into my brand in the future. Meanwhile, I want to learn some other skills about brand creating, such as advertising, marketing and maybe logo design. Secondly, I want to travel around Europe, because when I start studying, I won’t have as much time. And I am really interested in European culture and landscape, so I hope both of my dreams will come true.

What was your highlight of the UCA PSEAD course? “Mapping Cultural Heritage” was my favourite project. It was the first task of the PSEAD course. The reasons why I liked it so much was because I could choose to do whatever I wanted. The tutors were open-minded and supportive. As a result, I could show my abilities throughout this project.

Where do your inspirations come from? I always find inspirations from movies and music. I love listening to music while I drive. This activity can make me feel relax and calm because I do not need to think about anything. Just forget the world for a while, focus on the street and listen to my favourite bands. As a consequence, my creative mind can be completely productive during this time.
What is your expectation? To be honest, I expect a lot from living abroad. F o r t h e s t u d y p a r t , I wa n t t o ex p l o r e a n d g a i n more knowledge as much as I can. In addition, This MA course is a practice field before facing the real world. I could meet many people f r o m va r i o u s p a t hways , n o t o n l y exc h a n g e a n d acquire new ideas and inspirations from new friends but also prepare myself for tough situations. Another part is about things that I fancy doing. I can travel to many places, where I pinned it in my dream destination album, to experience the new tast of life. Moreover, due to the reasonthat I am a big fan of many bands from the UK such as Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys, I can join gigs and music festivals as much as I want.Just thinking about this idea makes my heart beat fast!
What is your favourite work on PSEAD? My favourite work is six fashion design look illustrations of project 3/1 “Gender unfairness”. Three of them are from me, the others are from Jay. Jay thought the concept design is unisex fashion. I thought it would be an interesting cooperative experience when Jay told me about the idea at the beginning Because we did not have a clear concept of gender position in this collection, which allows us to have more imagination and improve our communication. I am so proud of this work not only because of the outcome but also because it perfectly captured the meaning of our topic. I realized meaningful products are valuable, which pushed me to think more behind the design.
My philosophy in design Before I come to UCA, the most inspirations of my design were from nature, architecture and travelling. I am fond of looking for beauty from my experience and I think design is creating the beauty. When I study in the PSEAD course, I realized that I always paid more attention to beautiful things rather than the society around me. However, being a good designer means challenging people’s lifestyles. We all know that good design can change your life. So I think the philosophy of my design will be more about social life, humanistic care and culture. I want my design can be useful for people.
What have you learnt in the PSEAD course? I think the most important thing for me have learned is how to organize my time. We have lessons every day and a new project every two weeks. The quantity of the project was a little bit large and I needed to make sure to finish it qualitatively. So I made the timetable and checked it every day. Also, the tutors helped me to check the process what I have done and what I need to do next. What is more, I have learnt how to work in a teamwork successfully.

What are your expectations? Firstly, studying in the UK will improve my English skill in real life and academic area. The UK is one of the most popular fashion industries. It is very suitable for studying fashion marketing and communication. Moreover, I hope that I will have a good relationship with foreign students and we can exchange each others’ cultures.
What is the most impressive thing on PSEAD course? Th e m o s t i m p r e s s i ve t h i n g o n t h i s co u r s e wa s a trip to the British Museum. It was the first time that I visited museum in the UK. The British museum increased my perspective of world history and the differences in cultures. Additionally, the architecture and curation of the works inspired me to create my own design in the future.
