Introduction

Introduction

Designing, continuous process of imagining, learning and discovering ways, methods, skills to establish order… learning diverse way of thinking, taking a fresh look learning communicating and conveying the ideas, making them concrete… Architecture as a field of design, for me, is the negotiation of emotions | feelings | imagination and reasoning. My interest, in this sense, first lies in craftsmanship as the link between the architect and the material, space, context, the idea. I believe that it is a strong way for exploring the possibility of ‘imagined’. It is also the way to grasp functionality as well as the physical bound between human and space which is established by the perception of space via light, material and form. The bound between human and space is not only physical. How human relate to each other in public space, how space contributes to public sphere and how people transform their environment by taking action constitute part of my interest in architecture. My works here present sections of my continuous learning process and curiosity related to physical and social interplay between human and space.

TUDelft Archiprix Nomination MSc -3|4 TU Delft, design | 02.2011 – 04.2012 instructors | Ir. R.J. Nottrot, Asst Prof J. Heintz, Asst Prof H. Plomp location | Brussels

The discovery of the hidden potential of the society – activist movements – has been the initiator of a Creative Center in the neglected part of Brussels for active members of the society. It is part of a designed scenario in urban scale as an urban intervention, and the experiment field of a broad light research at the same time. The project is studied starting from urban scale to spatial detailing in which light quality has been the most important aspect.

Light has been as the hands of the sculptor for the built mass during the design process. It digs out to penetrate, to illuminate indirectly the workshop area. It cuts the mass creating an opening at top, when the space is surrounded by other functions. Roof inclination into the body allows more light to come in while keeping the horizontality of the overall structure. Light bends the walls to reflect. What is achieved at the end is the long journey of light through the body and an inspiring light condition for the creation of art and craft.

City foyer is the study of integrating a broad public function into a quite narrow and busy location without interrupting its already existing public quality and destroying openness. This project is the implementation of a program and research of spatial quality underground, research of the harmony between over and below.

Foyer functions have been integrated into the location according to their conditions of accessibility and light requirements while adopting and slightly transforming the existing 2nd-hand market circulation. Market kiosks follow the continuous double-floor circulation loop in a certain rhythm providing access with some gaps in-between for integrated functions.

Market circulation has been the major input for foyer functions. It defined the main axis and the penetration points to the foyer. In order to establish the dialog between market and foyer, in-between strips are introduced. They connect | separate | link the two different program elements. Remaining underground mass is interrupted by courtyards to provide light to underground spaces. General layout is the combination of market strips, in-between strips, separated foyer functions, separating-linking light subtractions and the recreation space above.

Theater is manifesting its function into the city by its form in the hybrid area of Izmir where historical and recent, collective and individual, planned and unplanned, fragmented and unified come together. This hybrid condition of the location is accentuated by a hybrid program. Besides functions related to theater in the rotated prism; domestic, administrative and commercial functions are gathered in another prism on the side.

One part of the volume is for the public-spectator, the other one is for the private-performer and outdoor public. Inclined indoor and outdoor auditorium surfaces form continuity with the street level following the old bazaar axis and bringing the spectators inside.

Intense laag-bouw in Groningen is the study of real conditions for a housing complex in terms of regulations (FSI, GFA, parking), required living conditions and fitting into the context. The strategy developed for the whole master plan is to expand the connection to the old sugar factory (a potential public event space) and make a public axis towards it. The strategy for housing scale is to double the public ground floor in order to increase the groundbound units. This approach made the master plan pedestrian focused.

One repeated dwelling cluster in master plan is studied further in detail. Each wing of the u-shaped cluster is designed differently according to the sun-orientation, connections to public and private outdoor spaces, parking lots and access. Articulation on the faรงade is the outcome of the interplay between dwelling units. The need for connection to the courtyard, private outdoor space for each housing block and private entrances shifts the units. Subtractions from the volume when there is more necessity for outdoor space create depth. Lastly, adaptable roller blind system interrupts the order of the faรงade, providing dynamism and playfulness.

In south wing, direct connection to the main public axis and south orientation required a separating element on the faรงade. This element is actually an in-between, semi-public space. While separating the private dwelling zone from the public, it provides outdoor spaces for dwellings and blocks the sun by providing an extra faรงade. This space also establishes the communication between the typologies and the public deck.

Venice, where artificial becomes art over the beauty of nature The analysis of the relation of natural and artificial elements in the city allowed the recreation of a language similar to the very poetic one of the city. A code composed by artificial and natural elements structures the location enhancing this transitory character and forming the rules for the (co-)housing at the same time.

Exhibition ‘Spaces of Social Activism’ master graduation exhibition

design | 04.2012 location | ‘the Why Factory’ Orange tribune, room K TU Delft Faculty of Architecture

The outcome of the master graduation process was shared with an exhibition at the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture. The layout of the exhibition is designed to make the audience walk through the whole design process.

exhibition space

thematic distribution: 1. urban scale 2. building scale 3. detailing

Design process is divided into 4 phases. The 3 phases (1 – urban scale analysis and design, 2 – building scale analysis and design, 4 – detailing) are placed separately facing outside the exhibition space. The third phase between the building scale and detailing is regarded as the heart of the project. It is when the building is being shaped further into detail by the impressions derived from light conditions. By turning the other 3 phases out, the attention is gathered on this more personal phase.

panels

Intended circulation within the exhibition space was obtained by the white surfaces. These surfaces are composed of 60x200 cm drywall panels leaning on each other from both sides. The intention was to create spaces within a space and bring forward the exhibited material over a bright background.

artistic impressions

At the heart of the exhibition stand the tree hand drawings drawn by ink pen. These drawings are the soul of the project reflecting impressions from light studies and taking the design process towards more technical level. The fact that they are considered to be the link between personal feelings and reasoning is the reason for them to stand at the heart of the exhibition.

urban scale

models

building scale

The drawings are supported by 3 physical models for each study scale. 1|1000 urban model is made up of wood. 1|200 building model and 1|33 section model are made up of concrete. The reason for the choice of concrete as the material of the two models is the real expression of space by using the real construction material.
