SPECIAL FEATURE : MANAGEMENT EDUCATION FOR A VUCA WORLD CASE STUDY Management in a VUCA World The present day world is ever changing, fast evolving and is characterized by VUCA. VUCA, a term coined by US Army War College stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. VUCA has now been recognized and accepted by the business leaders and organizations as the new normal. A successful manager in a VUCA world needs to handle a variety of changes and bringing order amidst the chaotic business environment. Characteristics of VUCA VUCA stands for Volatility – Nature, Speed, Magnitude and Dynamics of Changes in business environment Uncertainty – The lack of predictability surrounding business given the unpredictable macroeconomic environment Complexity – Myriad of issues and complications surrounding an organization Ambiguity – Unclear road-map and vague real time conditions faced by organizations The above signs have been witnessed regularly and are expected to increase further in the future. Need for Change in Modern Management History is full of organizations which have been shut down because of their inability to navigate through changes. Business changes are inevitable and appropriate leadership development programmes are required to be able to adapt and respond. Likewise, Management Education also requires a sea change from traditional methods to stay relevant and responsive to the current requirements. Students have to be prepared for an increasingly complex career in an environment surrounded by complex situations requiring quick solutions. Rebooting Management Education to be relevant in a VUCA World Management education in India has been largely able to address the demands of the Industry till the turn of the century. India has produced high quality managers from its premier institutions who have succeeded in Industry and as entrepreneurs. AICTE had close to 3700 technical institutes offering management education to around 3.5 Lakhs students in 2014. However over the past decade it has also been observed that, increasing demand for management professionals have led to mushrooming of management institutions, sometimes at the expense of quality management education. The need of the hour is to ensure Indian management education changes itself with the changing word and continues to produce future managers who are equipped to be successful in a VUCA world.
MYCII Portal
Changing dynamics in Management Education to relate to a VUCA World Indian Management education needs to stay relevant in the current scenario and need to adapt quickly, bring changes in curriculum design and execution, adopt disruptive measures in terms of technological usage and innovate in delivery models to relate to a VUCA world. In a VUCA world, management education will be assessed on the capability to adapt to an altering economic environment.

SPECIAL FEATURE : MANAGEMENT EDUCATION FOR A VUCA WORLD CASE STUDY Glocal Approach - Global Competitiveness with locally appropriate learning outcomes Improving global competitiveness of the Indian management institutions is essential to promote quality education suited to a VUCA world. Global competitiveness can be fostered and enhanced by: Accreditation: Accreditations are done at the national level by bodies like NBA, NAAC and institutes can also seek international accreditation of the likes of IACBE, AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS et.al. Accreditation helps in attracting students from various nationalities which in turn fosters student diversity enabling an environment to produce mature and focused leaders Global Collaborations: Global collaborations both on Academic and Research fronts are key in improving the standard of education and producing meaningful research output. Through the above measures adopted by the institutions, Indian Management institutes will be able to create leaders who have the ability to think local and act global in a VUCA world. Technology as a Game Changer Technology can be a game changer in the field of management education for a VUCA world. It can be leveraged for implementing innovative delivery mechanisms suited for a large and diverse country like India Digitization is a mega trend in delivery of management education and is required to take the courses into hinterland of India MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) can provide easy access to high quality education in the living rooms. Students to collaborate on digital platforms to share their knowledge and even assessment can be done over online delivery mechanisms Global Faculty can teach using technology platforms from their base locations Scenario based / Simulation based learning can provide value added experiential learning with a bias for action rather than theory
Case Snippet : Ross Business School, Michigan “Multidisciplinary Action Projects- An experiential learning program requiring students to learn integration of various business disciplines through action at an organization. More than 600 organizations have sponsored this program. Faculty advisors provide research support and evaluate by visiting the sponsoring site Changing roles of the key stakeholders
MYCII Portal
Students Indian Students are looking to learn global perspectives of business, understanding cross- cultural sensitivity and learning the ability to collaborate in their management programs in addition to the technical knowledge which has been the focus area of the Indian management education.

SPECIAL FEATURE : MANAGEMENT EDUCATION FOR A VUCA WORLD CASE STUDY Students want to be trained to think about issues from diverse angles, solve problems holistically. Adaptive thinking and being open to change will be essential for future development for students to become successful managers in the VUCA world. Differentiated programs – short term, flexible and customized programs bringing in experiential learning, multidisciplinary approach and global perspectives would lead to creation of inspirational leaders suited to the VUCA world. Faculty/Academia Indian management faculty have long been regarded very highly and deservedly so. They now need to adapt to the flipped model of teaching where the role of Faculty has shifted where the discussions are led by the student and directed at the faculty. Facilitation skills are increasingly required to deliver value to the student. The class room is guided by the faculty to find the right solutions to business problems. Policy Makers/Government Policy framework in Indian needs to implement critical success factors for the management institute like employee selection qualification, encouraging research, faculty development, Industry Interface is required. The National Education Policy being developed should be able to address the above areas. The Indian Government should design conducive policy environments and measures to foster agile leadership, reward innovation, agility and calculated risk taking. Industry Industry should invest in leadership development to build effective leaders to navigate through VUCA world by bringing in global curriculum to the course design. Industry needs to be adaptive and ensure continuous shifts in process, people, technology and structure to create value. Future of Management Education Characteristics of a business leader in a VUCA world Management Education for a VUCA world needs to create business leaders with the following characteristics: - Agile Leaders who can enjoy rapid change and perform well in the environment - Leaders driven by values of integrity, responsibility and respect in complex circumstances - Decisive leaders who convey a sense of urgency in decision making - Leaders who can modify personal styles to the context and work with the bigger picture in mind - Leaders who are open to new challenges and be able to collaborate across the various functions of the organization - Leaders who are able to communicate clearly to all stakeholders across levels - Leaders who are able to equally understand strategic priorities while maintaining tactical discipline

Management education is undergoing dynamic changes with respect to the changing business environment. As the famous term VUCA goes, we are living in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous business environment. Businesses are reinventing themselves as per the VUCA changes in the environment. BOOKS ON EDUCATION How was IIMA born? Who were the key players? What has made it synonymous to success? These questions become even more relevant as the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) marks its Golden Jubilee year in 2011. Established in 1961, IIMA is the first Indian business school to achieve international recognition. In 2002, Economist Intelligence Unit’s list declared IIMA as the most selective management school in the world. And in 2011, IIMA has been ranked number 7 in Financial Times (FT)’s global ranking of Masters in Management Programme. In this well researched and timely book, Prafull Anubhai charts the journey of this premier institution from its inception to what is it today—the construction of its iconic campus by American architect Louis Kahn, policies and processes that set the benchmark, exemplary leadership exhibited by its various chairmen and directors, and the vision and future challenges for the institute. In The IIIMA Story, Prafull weaves all the threads together to present a vivid history of one of India’s greatest pride that has shaped the lives of many individuals through generations.
