CASE STUDY ACADEMIA - INDUSTRY COLLABORATION IIT-MADRAS- INDUSTRIAL CONSULTANCY & SPONSORED RESEARCH SUCCESS STORY Why did industry partner with the Institute? Given the institute offers to conduct quality research and consulting projects at competitive prices (cost of research is almost half of what it would be in private labs), it had helped the centre attract renowned and a diversified mix of clients ranging from corporates to quasi government; for both sponsored as well as consultancy projects What value did the institute add to industry? Several technologies developed with support from the centre have been transferred to industry for commercialization. Such technologies have led to concept, process and product development; creation of intellectual property and utilization through patenting and technology transfer; thus making important contribution to design and development of the industry and the country at large What did the institute gain from working with industry? This interaction with industry has helped IIT Madras align itself to the changing need and environment as well as enable effective utilisation of its resources. The institute also gains by leveraging the relationship for securing scholarships, internships and placements for the students. What does it take to keep this phenomenon successful? A well defined framework for undertaking such projects with all required systems in place ensures speedy initiation and implementation of the projects. Alongside, initiatives to maintain a long lasting association with the client make this collaboration successful. What can other institutes learn from this case study? Other Institutions should as well believe that their existence is for serving the industry needs, while in turn they could secure funds, knowledge-share, and hands-on experience to solving real-time challenges of the industry, and thereby contributing to the society at large.

Overview of Industry Collaboration at IIT Madras IIT Madras has been in the forefront in promoting Industry - Institute interaction through several innovative schemes. Since IIT Madras realized the importance of interaction with industries in its formative years it has been able to adapt itself to the changing needs and the environment by entering into strategic alliances with various industries at national and international levels to leverage resources for meeting the challenges from the competition. During the last two decades the emphasis on interaction between Industry and the Institute has shifted to joint research projects leading to concept, process and product development, creation of intellectual property and utilization through patenting and technology transfer and also venture capital. The nature of interaction with industries covers a wide spectrum of activities, namely: • Academic • Research & Consultancy • Centers of Excellence • International Collaboration

SPOTLIGHT- GLOBAL EDUCATION COUNTRY FOCUS : IRELAND

Ireland's economic recovery form the effects of the world financial crisis has taken firm hold. The Irish economy has rebounded significantly in the last five years and is growing strongly across all sectors. In fact Ireland now has the fastest growing economy in Europe, once again. Companies in sectors such as software, engineering, financial services and pharma are thriving. The higher education sector in Ireland has been a key component of this recovery. It has responded well to the needs of the economy not just by growing the system but also by realigning provision to priority areas for growth and by offering new and flexible modes of learning. A key development is the building of collaborative networks between institutions, regionally, across sectors, nationally and globally. The Irish higher education system in Ireland consist of the university sector, a network of institutes of technology and a number of private colleges. All of Ireland's universities are ranked in the top 5% globally, and its oldest, Trinity College Dublin dates back to the year 1592. Ireland's 'Institutes of Technology are known for their strength in applied research, particularly in the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Indeed, 75% of Ireland's engineering graduates come from these institutes. Ireland's tertiary attainment rates for key sections of the labour force are the highest in Europe and in the top 5 of the OECD. Ireland offers world class undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, a safe, English speaking environment. What's more, Ireland with its euro currency, offers good value for money, particularly for Indian students. Ireland is now increasingly more attractive to Indian students, more so than the UK. The UK maintenance fund requirement has now risen by 24%. Furthermore, unless a student holds a graduate job offer, they must return to their home country after their studies. Both these changes will come into force in the UK from November 12. However, this is not the case with Ireland, where international graduates can enjoy a one year stay back option to explore career opportunities. Most Indian students travelling to Ireland pursue postgraduate studies, but an increasing number are now looking at the quality of the Irish system and choosing to undertake their undergraduate studies there.

SPOTLIGHT- GLOBAL EDUCATION Ireland's institutions offer world class programmes in computing, software, mechanical and electronic engineering, biotech / pharma, international business, communications and social sciences. The strength of research capability in Irish institutions in notable. World Class Research The Irish government invests over €782 million annually in research in Ireland's higher education institutions. The impact of this funding is that Ireland's higher education institutions now lead the world in an increasing number of fields. Irish universities are in the top 1% of research institutions in the world in terms of research impact in 19 fields, spanning natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities. Ireland's reputation as a location for world class research continues to grow. In 2014 there were over 2,498 academic collaborations, 74% of which were with international partners. The international collaborations cover most of the globe - the largest number are with European academic institutions (58%), with North America and Asia comprising 22% and 11% respectively.

Ireland – the Business Ecosystem Ireland is the European hub to over 1,000 multinational companies. Companies such as Google, Facebook, Pfizer, Apple, Intel, Genzyme all chose to locate in Ireland. Its world class education system is one of the key contributing factors why Ireland has become a magnet for high-end investment from all over the world, and is home to thousands of the world's most successful global firms.

Here is a snapshot of who is located in Ireland: · · · · · · ·

9 of the top 10 global ICT companies 8 of the top 10 gaming companies 8 of the top ten global pharmaceutical companies 6 of the top 7 diagnostics companies 15 of the top 20 medical devices companies 50% of the world's leading financial services firms 7 of the top 10 industrial automation companies

Irish higher education institutions often talk of developing 'employment ready' skills – so graduates can transition smoothly into the workplace. This is the result of a multifaceted approach. Ireland's higher education institutions place significant importance on the applied nature of programmes, and there is often an industry placement as a core component. Small class sizes, and high-tech facilities are also commonplace. Indeed, Ireland could be a good place to kick start a career as its 12-month stay-back option helps with what are very good employment outcomes for overseas students. All institutions have a career office as a central part of its students support services. In addition to its multinational sector, Ireland is now also the second most entrepreneurial country in Europe - according to the 2014 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report. Over a third of the population in Ireland is under 25 years of age. There is an increasing number of young people, especially women, starting new businesses. Creativity and innovation have been another important driver of Ireland's transformation into a high-tech, knowledge based economy.

SPOTLIGHT- GLOBAL EDUCATION Student Experience As for the experience of international students - a recent independent student undertaken by Student Portals revealed that out of 18 European countries surveyed – Ireland came up as number one in terms of international student satisfaction. The survey found that higher education institutions were appreciated for their community atmospheres, innovative programmes, support structures for students, as well as their multicultural mix and student life. Indeed, Irish higher education institutions are set to become even more diverse and multicultural. The government in Ireland is currently undertaking a drive to promote its education system abroad. India is among five target regions (others being, US, Middle East, South East Asia, Brazil and China). From 21-29 November the government of Ireland will host 'Education in Ireland', fairs in five Indian cities; New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Chennai. Indian students interested in learning more about programmes in Ireland, and career opportunities, have a great opportunity to do so during this time. EDUCATION INFOGRAPHIC

BOOKS ON EDUCATION Note by the Editor: It is necessary to state at the outset what this book sets out to cover. The Navjivan Publishing House has already published a book by Gandhiji on Basic Education. It deals with Gandhiji's writings and speeches on education primarily from the latter half of 1937 when he launched his new scheme of education. This new scheme came to be called Basic Education. It related to education to be given to a child from his 7th to 14th year. To this was to be added in course of time Pre-Basic and Post-Basic education relating to education before the 7th and after the 14th year respectively. The education covering all these three stages is what is comprised under New Education or Nai Talim. Gandhiji's ideas in regard to this New Education did not, of course, suddenly emerge from his brain in 1937, but were the outcome of long years of sustained thought and experience. The present book relates to this earlier formative period when he revolted from the prevailing system of education and sought in various ways to substitute it by educational practices it by educational practices more in harmony with his own conception of the function of education. To understand adequately the Basic Education scheme which he formulated in 1937 it is essential to go back to this earlier period where we can see it in origin and growth. The present book may, therefore, be said to be a necessary companion volume to the one on Basic Education.
