Dear Alumni & Friends, In the life of any institution, there come tipping points, when the weight of circumstance shifts the center of gravity. Rarely has the ground under legal education shifted so quickly. Last year at Widener Law, instead of allowing the energy of events to direct us, we harnessed it to spur innovation and enhance our sustainability. In the face of rapid change, we elected to reweight the scale; to add more value; to build where appropriate; to trim when necessary; to rebalance. This annual report details just a few of our many achievements in 2012–2013. Strong outcomes in the midst of unusual times are a tribute to the many individuals who are invested in this law school, its students, and the future of our profession. Thank you for the part you have played in our continuing success. Sincerely, Linda L. Ammons, JD Associate Provost and Dean 1

Mobile There is no replacement for generations of legal wisdom or for teaching it through unhurried, on-campus conversation. But without doubt we must at times deliver that wisdom through new, multidimensional methods. Last year, we embraced and celebrated venerable traditions in the law, just as we have for the past four decades. We brought them to our students and our communities face to face, over thousands of miles, and everywhere between. At the center of our learning network are hundreds of Juris Doctor students. While they learned much as their predecessors did, they also benefited from powerful new methods and technologies that extended this network far beyond our campus and the JD.

program highlights The Ruby R. Vale Corporate Moot Court Competition, the nation’s only such event, celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary. Established in 1989 with funding from the Ruby R. Vale Foundation and sponsored by the Delaware campus Moot Court Honor Society, the competition is named in honor of renowned attorney Ruby R. Vale.

New Programs in 2012–2013 • Online MJ in Health Law With certificate in Regulatory Analysis & Compliance With certificate in Legal Nurse Consulting & Hospital Regulatory Compliance With certificate in Global Compliance For the first time, the ABA sent separate evaluation teams to the Delaware and Harrisburg campuses, recognizing their increasingly distinct identities. While the results of these processes remain pending, Dean Linda Ammons heard many good things, particularly about student happiness.

• Online MJ in Corporate and Business Law With certificate in Regulatory Analysis & Compliance With certificate in Global Compliance • Online Courses for Non-Matriculating Professionals

The Widener Health Law Institute is spearheading a yearlong series of public events in 2013 focusing on Roe v. Wade and reproductive health. Hosted by area law schools and one firm, “Roe After 40” features speakers and panel discussions on facets of the decision and its implications for reproductive and other rights.

Local Engagement Last year, we brought our community to Widener to discuss and evaluate events, but also to witness them. We sent our students and faculty out to study history and the law, but also to put their mark on them. In a world seeking clarity, we led by offering focus. In a public arena that is too often polarized, we offered balance.

Global Reach 4

In fall 2012, Widener Law hosted debates among candidates for a variety of public offices: Governor of Delaware, US Senate for Delaware, US House of Representatives for Delaware (pictured), Auditor General of Pennsylvania, and Attorney General of Pennsylvania.

The law school continued its partnership with the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN), producing four “Law and Government Forum” programs. Pictured: Professor Randy Lee speaks as part of a panel on the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. To his left: Professor Robert Power.

Faculty traveled the world over to speak, research, and collaborate. Pictured: Distinguished Professor John Dernbach (left) at the University of Cambridge, where he served as a visitor to the faculty of law during his fall 2012 sabbatical.

Left: Widener Law hosted two great groups during its sixth annual JURIST Academy, which offers wellqualified college students from diverse backgrounds a two-week, tuition-free preview of the law school experience. Right: Students visiting Widener Law as part of the law school’s agreement with Catholic University of Lyon School of Law pose with Assistant Dean and Director of Graduate Programs Tony Doyle and Dean Linda Ammons. The law school also hosted students from China, Russia, and Gambia. 5

Student Success

Success

Last year we inspired our students to balance the theoretical knowledge inherent to learning their discipline and the tradecraft imperative to practicing it. The result? Distinguishing performance. Meaningful service. Hands-on experience.

Building on a strong foundation, our students, faculty, and alumni achieved great success over the last year.

Three Transactional Law Competition Team members—Deniz Uzel (pictured), Randy MacTough, and Amber Marsano—placed highly in a nationwide online competition hosted by LawMeets. Uzel placed first on the “due diligence” assignment, ninth in “the anatomy of an acquisition agreement,” and 20th overall out of 838 participants.

Theory – Practice

Andrew Gold was chosen for a prestigious Peggy Browning Fellowship, which recognizes and promotes interest in public interest labor law among students of distinguished academic achievement. Brittany Giusini was published in Jurist magazine and in the Delaware Journal of Corporate Law. Giusini, who entered the law school via TAP, will serve as the journal’s 2013–2014 editor-in-chief and as a Wolcott Fellow for the Honorable Randy J. Holland. Students Langdon Ramsburg (pictured), Katie Adam, and Mitchell Jones won the Allegheny County Academy of Trial Lawyers Mock Trial Competition. Ramsburg was presented the First Place Advocate Award by Harry Zimmer, Esq.

faculty Success

Last year, our faculty were at the forefront of classroom innovation. Yet by leading the way, they simply extended their longstanding commitment to excellent teaching, of which the classroom is only a part. They were no less remarkable in their willingness to take students far afield, to conduct groundbreaking research, and to commit themselves to life-changing service. Juliet Moringiello (left) was named a “Woman of Influence” by the Central Pennsylvania Business Journal.

Teach, Advance – Engage, Influence

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane appointed H. Geoffrey Moulton Jr. to lead her office’s internal investigation into its handling of the Penn State child abuse case. He is serving as a special deputy attorney general. The Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers presented Jules Epstein the Liberty Award “for his continuing commitment to the principles of liberty and justice under the law.” John Gedid, founding vice dean of the Harrisburg campus and director of the Law & Government Institute, retired in June, 2013.

Faculty Departures A number of exceptional faculty retired or moved onward and upward in 2012–2013. We are deeply grateful for their service and wish them the best.

“We are so grateful to you, Dean Ammons, for the work you did. Thank you for stepping up when the state really needed you. You were uniquely qualified to help.” —Delaware Governor Jack Markell, on the occasion of signing into law several bills containing Dean Linda Ammons’ recommendations for child abuse policy and procedure. Ammons received a number of honors last year, including the Best Buddies Delaware Community Leadership Award, The Delaware Barrister Association’s Excellence in Education Award, and recognition for 20 years of service to the National Judicial College, which maintains its east coast judicial training center at Widener Law.

In 2012–2013, Widener Law faculty published 8 books, 4 book chapters, 47 articles, and 45 other pieces.

alumni Success

It is well-established that Widener Law graduates enter professional life exceptionally prepared for practice. And although their professional successes define them in their fields, it is just as often their service—to their communities, their nation, and their profession— that distinguishes them. Widener Law alumni continued to serve the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in a variety of ways. Pictured: Dean Linda Ammons poses with (from left) Representative Peter J. Daley ’93, Senator Richard L. Alloway II ’02, Representative Bryan Cutler ’06, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale, ’02, Representative Mark B. Cohen ’93, and Senator Dominic Pileggi, Pennsylvania majority leader.
