Earth Day History
Earth Day began in the late 1960s when people in the Unite States started caring more abo the environment. One big even that got everyone talking was oil spill near Santa Barbara, California, in 1969. This spill up people and made them think more about how we treat the Earth.
Air Pollution
WaterPollution
Around the same time, people were also worried about things like dirty air and water, cutting down too many trees, and animals and plants disappearing. Books like "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson showed how dangerous chemicals could be to wildlife

Earth Day
Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin had an idea. He saw how students were standing up against the war and thought people could come together in the same way to protect the environment. He wanted a special day where everyone could learn how to take care of the Earth.
This idea became Earth Day.
Earth Day Rally
The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. People across the country joined rallies, marches, and events to learn and discuss ways to help the environment. Earth Day was so successful that it led to new laws to keep the air and water clean and created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help care for the environment.

Earth Day Activities
After that, Earth Day became a yearly event, and it spread to other countries around the world.
Plant A Tree
Every year on April 22nd, people do different things to help the Earth, like planting trees, picking up trash, and learning about animals and plants.
Pick Up Trash
Take Care of Animals
Earth Day is a special time to remember that we all share this planet and need to take care of it for ourselves and future generations.

Protect Earth
Earth Day gives people and neighborhoods a chance to do things that help keep the Earth healthy and protect all the plants and animals that live here.
Protect Environment
It's a time when we can work together to save water, use less electricity, plant trees, and make sure we're not hurting the environment.

Reuse
Earth Day wants us to think really carefully about how we use things and what we buy. Sometimes you can reuse things for other purposes rather than buy something new.
Recycle
Earth Day reminds that our small choices can make big difference in keeping the Earth

WHATIS
Reusing can involve finding new purposes for old items, repairing or refurbishing products to give them a second life, or simply using items multiple times before discarding them.
The first step in waste management is to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place. This involves being mindful of consumption habits and making choices that minimize the use of resources and the generation of waste.
Recycling involves processing materials such as paper, glass, metal, and plastic so that they can be turned into new products. Recycling helps conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Earth Day
Instead of throwing away clothes you no longer wear, consider donating them to charity or giving them to someone else who can use them. You can also repurpose old clothes into rags or cut them up as cleaning cloths.
Plastic Containers
Instead of throwing away plastic food containers, like yogurt cups or takeout containers, you can wash them out and reuse them to store leftovers or pack lunches. They're lightweight, durable, and can be used multiple times before recycling.
Paper
Paper:
Instead of using new sheets of paper for one-time purposes, you can reuse paper that's been used on one side by flipping it over and using the blank side for notes, drawings, or printing drafts.
Glass Jars
Instead of throwing away glass jars from things like pasta sauce or jam, you can clean them out and reuse them to store leftovers, homemade sauces, or as containers for arts and crafts supplies.
Cloth Bags
Instead of using plastic bags every time you go shopping, you can bring reusable cloth bags. They're sturdy and easy to carry, and you can use them over and over again.

Use Reusable Items
Instead of using things once and throwing them away, try to use items that you can use over and over again. For example, use a reusable water bottle instead of buying drinks in disposable plastic bottles.
Pack Waste-Free Lunches
When you pack your lunch for school, try to use containers and utensils that you can wash and reuse. Avoid using plastic bags or single-use packaging whenever possible.
Shop Smart
When you go shopping with your family, try to choose products with less packaging or buy things in bulk. This reduces the amount of packaging waste that ends up in the trash.
Donate or Sell Unwanted Items
Instead of throwing away things you no longer need, like clothes or toys, consider donating them to charity or selling them to someone else who might want them. This keeps items out of the landfill and gives them a second life.
Reduce Food Waste
Plan your meals and only buy what you need at the grocery store to avoid throwing away food. Try to eat leftovers or freeze them for later instead of letting them go to waste.
Recycle Whenever Possible
Learn about what can be recycled in your area and make sure
REUSE
Reuse means using something again instead of throwing it away after you're done with it. Instead of tossing something in the trash, you find a way to use it again for another purpose.
Reusing helps us save resources and reduce waste, which is good for the environment.
Use a fabric bag for shopping. You can bring it back to theg store over and over.
if you have a plastic water bottle, you can wash it out and refill it with water instead of getting a new one every time you're thirsty.
Instead of buying singleuse plastic water bottles, use a reusable water bottle. You can refill it whenever you need a drink, reducing plastic waste and conserving resources.
HOW TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE
1
Plan your weekly meals in advance to buy only what you need.
2
Learn to distinguish between "sell by," "use by," and "best before" dates.
3
Use airtight containers to keep leftovers fresh and prevent spoilage.
4
This ensures items are consumed before they reach their expiration date.
5
Turn leftovers into new meals to avoid them going to waste.
6
Compost food scraps like fruit peels, vegetable trimmings, and coffee grounds.

Curbside Recycling
Some neighborhoods have a special program where you put things like paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and cans in a special bin outside your house. A truck comes and takes these things to a place where they're turned into new stuff.
Drop-Off Recycling Centers
If your neighborhood doesn't have curbside recycling or if you have things like old electronics or batteries, you can take them to a drop-off place where they take many different items to be recycled.
E-Waste Recycling
Electronics like old computers or cell phones can be recycled too! There are special places that take them apart carefully to get useful stuff like metals and plastics out, and make sure the dangerous parts are handled safely.
Composting
Instead of throwing away things like food scraps and paper, you can put them in a special bin to make compost. Compost is like food for plants and helps gardens grow!
Donate Items
Instead of throwing away clothes or toys that you no longer need, you can give them to charities or thrift stores. Other people might be able to use them, and it helps keep stuff out of the trash.

THE RECYCLING PROCESS
RECYCLING IS THE PROCESS OF CONVERTING WASTE MATERIALS INTO NEW MATERIALS AND OBJECTS.
COLLECTION
People put recyclable items, such as paper, plastic, and aluminum cans, into recycling bins
SORTING
At the recycling facility, machines and workers sort the materials into different categories, such as paper, plastic, and metal.
PROCESSING
The sorted materials are then processed to remove any impurities, such as labels or glue. They are then broken down into small pieces and transformed into new products.
LET'S DO OUR PART
By understanding the recycling process, we can all do our part to protect the environment and create a more sustainable future.
