Spotlight: Ann’s Angels This quarter, the Center for Independent Living would like to spotlight Ann’s Angels Adaptive Waterski Foundation Inc. Ann’s Angels’ mission is to promote public awareness about children and adults with disabilities through the sport of water skiing and wakeboarding. Ann O’Brine Satterfield started her program in the early 90’s in Winter Haven, Florida. The UCanSki2 program ran from 1992 until Ann passed away from cancer on Christmas Eve 2015. The volunteers, Ann’s “angels,” would not let the program end. In February of 2016 they formed a new Nonprofit in her name to fill the void left by the UCanSki2 program. In May of 2016, Ann’s Angels Adaptive Waterski Foundation Inc. was born. Since then, Ann’s Angels has grown to be one of the best known adaptive water ski and wakeboard programs in the nation. Participating in 11 or more events a year all over Florida, Ann’s Angels attends expos, hosts a high performance training camp, and trains other programs that want to run learn to ski adaptive events all over the United States. They find that their programs provide a therapeutic recreation that reduces anxiety and depression while improving well-being and quality of life. John Lipscomb, Director and President of Ann’s Angels, worked with Ann at UCanSki2 from 1998 until she passed in December 2015. After learning the program would be closed down in January of the following year, he found a way to raise the funds and reinvent the program in Ann’s name with the blessing of her family and the support of the volunteers that did not want it to end. “We followed Ann’s directions and her request to rename the program and keep it running with her core beliefs and teachings in-tack,” John said. His belief in inclusion for people living with disabilities has inspired many to start their own programs here in the USA and overseas as well. Ann’s UCanSki2 Program and Ann’s Angels are responsible for directly training and helping 22 programs to be created worldwide and have inspired many more. Their commitment to the adaptive community has been unbreakable. Ann’s Legacy will live on in the many programs inspired by her tireless effort to bring healing to the mind, body and soul of every person she touched. Her Angels and their leader John Lipscomb will make sure to continue her legacy for years to come so that many more get to experience having an Angel on their side. Ann’s Angels would like you to always remember that “you can ski too!” To learn more about Ann’s Angels, visit their website at https://www.annsangelsawf.org/

Lissette Colon CIL Consumer Creating Opportunities for Disability Inclusion
Before being diagnosed with a disability over 30 years ago, Lissette Colon enjoyed doing many things with her family and friends. She loved going to the mall, talking long walks outside, and especially participating in activities with her children. Suddenly things began to change that would have a major impact on the things Lissette enjoyed. Lissette was diagnosed with asthma and then shortly after was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). The multiple sclerosis not only affected Lissette’s mobility, resulting in her having to use a wheelchair, it has also affected her brain functionality, in the form of memory loss. Because Lissette uses a wheelchair, and there is a 3” step at the entrance to the house, she no longer has the freedom to come and go as she desires. She does not have any other family or friends close by and is unable to participate in any outside activities. Even though Lissette lives with her daughter, she is home alone most of the day. Because of her memory loss she is unable to use any appliances and has no way to prepare food for herself; and because of the step to her home, she can’t go out and get something to eat. Therefore, if no one brought something for Lissette to eat, she would most often have to wait for her daughter to arrive home. Her daughter did not get home from work until late so it would be a long time before Lissette would get something to eat. One of CIL’s caseworkers came to visit Lissette to discuss the obstacles she was facing in her everyday life. CIL staff went to work to secure for Lissette the services, through various programs, that she needed. Most importantly, to make sure that Lissette had food during the day, Meals on Wheels was contacted. Unfortunately, the program had a long waiting list. However, CIL advocated for Lissette and was able to get immediate help and ensure that Lissette receives a full meal each day.

There is always something to do in Central Florida. Whether you’re a resident, a repeating visitor or a tourist, you can always find somewhere to go, even if it’s not Disney World. However, transportation can be limited to get from point A to point B if you need additional accommodations to travel. How do you know what is fully accessible? What’s the easiest way to commute? No one should have to miss out on events or activities because of a lack of transportation. The Sanford Trolley is an ADA approved accessible option if you are in the Downtown Sanford area. “The City of Sanford is committed to ensuring that all visitors and residents, including those with disabilities, are able to access and use all of our programs, services, and activities”, as stated on sanfordfl.gov. The trolley travels between the Sanford SunRail station and downtown Sanford where you can sit in ease while enjoying the historical sights of Sanford for FREE! People can visit https://www.sanfordfl.gov/residents/trolley to get more information on the trolley and schedule times.
