Leadership in action As I come to the end of my tenure as the CIM President, I look back with pride at the work that we achieved, the exciting new initiatives that are underway, and the way in which we adapted our business model to continue to support our members. It was an extraordinary time, unlike anything in our history, fighting for our survival as a not-for-profit organization during a pandemic. A year ago, the pandemic was just getting underway and, at the time, I encouraged collaboration as a way forward. I am not surprised that this call to action was met with such enthusiasm. Thank you for your efforts and for the teamwork! We have come a long way. Indeed, I am so proud of our industry as we rallied to support this amazing institute, to ensure our relevance and to thrive in the years to come. None of the 2020-2021 achievements would have been possible without our dedicated CIM National team led by Angela Hamlyn, Benoit Sawyer and Ryan Bergen, along with all the CIM members and volunteers across our great nation. It’s leadership that is at the core of this success. Leaders emerged when we needed them most. Together, we demonstrated much-lauded qualities of commitment, collaboration, caring, respect and trust – all of us working toward a common goal of a thriving CIM community. So many of you stepped up with your efforts and ideas. We held many virtual events such as symposia, webinars, and online branch meetings and sessions. We created a Corporate Patron program and continued to share technical learning and support for each other amongst all groups and networks. I am most impressed with the new strategic plan that was completed over the course of six months. We rolled up our sleeves and dug deep to re-think and envision our future. We excelled with outreach, to engage our industry stakeholders for their input and ideas – and we worked with all our societies, branches, and committees to create that final vision for the OneCIM. A broad group aided its development including Past President Roy Slack, President-Elect Pierre Julien and Incoming PresidentElect Anne Marie Toutant. As a team, we are excited to support its roll out and to help make it happen. I realize my original end-goal as your President was certainly achieved with the ground swell for collaboration and the effort that moved our industry forward. As I reflect on this tremendous success, I salute our Canadian miners – technically strong, visionary leaders, collaborators and innovators. Together, we work to improve the sustainability, safety and cost-effectiveness of our industry. We developed key guidelines, best practices and standards for industry, and we are accelerating the Mining 4.0 path to a future of zero harm and net zero carbon. CIM is fortunate to have you as members, embracing diversity and inclusion, networking and sharing of technical and business learning, and certainly in celebrating success. This is a virtual good-bye until we meet in person sometime soon, in the future.

Annual Report 2020 5
Together in a Changing World The pace and necessity for adaptation in every facet of the minerals industry has never been more demanding; a situation that has been exacerbated by the global pandemic. From the acceleration of automation and digitization to ensuring the health, well-being and safety of our workforce, we are living in unprecedented times. Five years ago, when CIM commenced our 2020 Vision Strategic Plan, little did we envision how cloudy our sights would become in the plan’s concluding year. Like individuals and organizations alike, CIM had to quickly adapt and look at the world through a new lens. As restrictions on in-person gatherings prevented us from assembling in ways that we once did, the CIM National Office, along with our constituent Societies, Branches, Chapters and Committees, found new ways to deliver the leading-edge knowledge and opportunities for connection to our members and our industry that are the hallmark of the OneCIM community. Of course, the cancellation of our 2020 annual convention and exposition – the Institute’s cornerstone national event – packed a severe punch, necessitating substantial organizational and operational changes and considerable belt tightening. Still, we persevered and worked with our community to capture the valuable content via videoconference platforms to be housed on CIM Academy, our online video content platform. Challenging times offer an opportunity for reflection, and CIM did just that as we embarked on an ambitious strategic planning project in 2020, setting the stage for our recalibration, recovery and growth. New electronic engagement tools enabled us to engage with our members, constituents and industry in ways and numbers that we seldom could in the past. CIM commences 2021 with a renewed collective ambition to advance a sustainable future for the Institute and the members and industry we serve. We will be greatly assisted in our recovery efforts thanks to the generous support of our industry partners to whom CIM reached out via our Corporate Patron Initiative – and they answered the call. Their financial assistance will go far in enabling us to continue to deliver the important programs and services we undertake on behalf of the industry. They – along with our valuable Corporate Members, sponsors and advertisers – will enable us to adapt and deliver resources and projects that respond to the current times. The OneCIM community and the industry we so proudly represent are definitely resilient, and we will be exploring the various facets of that attribute through many lenses during the 2021 annual convention under the theme “Resilient and Thriving: Together in a Changing World.”

ANGELA HAMLYN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER For those of you whose health and livelihoods have been impacted by COVID-19, our heartfelt wishes for recovery and healing. I would like to thank and commend the CIM National Office staff for their exceptional dedication and ingenuity this past year. My appreciation is due also to CIM Presidents Samantha Espley and Roy Slack, as well as the CIM Council for your support during these challenging times. And of course, a heartfelt thanks to our OneCIM community of dedicated members, volunteers and industry partners with whom we are on this journey as we set the stage for a brighter future.

As the pandemic shut down all inperson gatherings, an immediate effort was made to transition Branch and Society events to a virtual format through the GoToMeeting and Zoom video platforms. As Branches, Societies and Committees began to get a hang of the platforms and the events multiplied, CIM National supported event registration through promotions in newsletters and on social media.

Professional Development and Events Conference of Metallurgists + Uranium 2020
Capital Projects Symposium
CIM Academy
The 4th International Uranium Conference set to take place in May, was delayed due to the global pandemic. In addition to this, the 59th Conference of Metallurgists, scheduled for August, was also delayed. The two conferences were then combined as a virtual conference and offered at one price to attendees. This was the first major virtual conference held by the Metallurgy and Materials Society and CIM. Thanks to the efforts of MetSoc and all the volunteers and partners involved, COM+U2020 proved to be a major success and set the standard for future virtual conferences.
The symposium readily found 270 delegates from 13 countries, 31 mining companies and 59 executives to discuss capital projects in the mining industry. Conversations centred around lessons learned, case studies, new technologies and new ideas. Over the course of four days, daily keynotes, timely topics and workshops made for a successful event with hopes for something bigger and better in 2021. Thank you to all 17 sponsors for their support.
With the cancellation of the 2020 CIM Convention + EXPO, the need to accelerate CIM’s efforts to share knowledge and best practices online became a priority. CIM Academy is our very own online media library with technical presentations and webinars from CIM National and its Societies. The library consists of webinars and presentations from past conferences and symposiums, hosts short courses and workshops and will continue to grow. The majority of video content is accessible to all CIM members, with recordings of recent programming available for an additional cost. CIM Academy provided a venue for many of the presentations cancelled at the 2020 annual convention and can be found under the banner of CIM 2020 Technical Program Series.

Short Courses
Partnership with Edumine
The CIM webinar series, originally launched in 2019, took on a new brand name: Knowledge Exchange Webinars. These webinars found tremendous interest and registration numbers throughout 2020, and drew upon material submitted by the 2020 annual convention, presenters, the community and other sources.
With the launch of the CIM Academy and the demand for virtual events, three short courses were presented in the fall and winter of 2020. These short courses went in-depth for a more comprehensive exploration of skills and practices. These short courses, and future short courses, will live on and can be watched on CIM Academy.
• 10 Knowledge Exchange webinars presented in 2020
• Mining 101
In the summer, an agreement was signed with Edumine, a leading provider of professional development and training for mining industry professionals. Edumine offers 180 on-demand certified courses, accredited by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), for industry professionals looking to advance their careers. This is an added member benefit as the agreement stipulates that CIM National members receive a platform-wide 15% discount on any course.

Annual Report 2020 15
Membership Historically, a large number of members come through the registration of our in-person events, such as the annual convention. The cancellation of these events reduced our membership numbers. However, we are confident that the transition to virtual events – scheduled through 2021 – will bring membership numbers back to normal. Two marketing campaigns conducted in the summer and fall helped to boost membership numbers.
Student Focus The Mentorship Program, which was launched early in the year, has grown to 156 participants, 75 of whom are mentees and 81 are mentors. Originally offered exclusively to student members, the Mentorship Program will extend to include recent grad members.

CIM Foundation Activities During the troubling time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CIM Foundation and its partners, including MineralsED, reminded educators that the CIM Foundation provides educational materials free of charge without copyright restrictions through its website. These materials help partners illustrate and enhance their programming as well as their activities about minerals in the industry. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) contacted the CIM Foundation early in the year to express its appreciation for the educational mineral match panels and mineral cards. In particular, the cellphone panel has continued to be circulated as part of NRCan’s outreach kits. The CIM Foundation plans on working more closely with NRCan in 2021 by providing mineral cards for distribution during educational events focused on students. In partnership with the Management and Economics Society (MES), the CIM Foundation held a silent auction in November. The CIM Foundation thanks all those who placed bids and/or won items from the event. These funds are integral to the work of the foundation. Throughout the pandemic, the CIM Foundation has continued to award scholarships to support students, and provided funds to CIM Student Chapters to organize and host virtual events where their regular activities could no longer take place.
22 Annual Report 2020
Accomplishments The CIM Foundation launched a special campaign to raise funds for the Distinguished Lecturer program. As part of the campaign, the foundation created four e-books based on the lectures. The most recent volume, which covers 2015 to the present, is now available online. These e-books provide a record of the many lectures that have been offered over the years. They also indicate which of the many lectures have been video recorded and are available for viewing on CIM Academy.
Looking Ahead The CIM Foundation is looking forward to once again attending Branch and Society events in person, which is important to build partnerships and show support. When travel is once again allowed, the foundation hopes to organize a fundraising event, meet donors, encourage donations and gifts, showcase educational materials, promote scholarships and visit schools to meet new educators.

CIM Branches CIM branches are integral to the mission of the Institute to build a united OneCIM community from coast to coast to coast. Branches are organized geographically within three districts across Canada to address the local needs of members, constituents and the local communities in which they operate. They discuss regional issues concerning the industry, host relevant events, share experiences and technical knowledge, provide fellowship and networking opportunities for professionals and students, and fundraise for causes dear to them. Wholly volunteer-run, CIM branches unite the mining industry at the local level and put forward a positive view of the industry to which we belong.

Financials Financially speaking, the 2020 fiscal year was quite the challenge. The cancellation of our annual convention six weeks out left a disastrous shortfall of $2.45 million. Our other revenue streams were revised to reflect the impact of the pandemic. Our first forecast in the middle of March 2020 indicated a shortfall of $2.7 million. Going through various scenarios as well as a remodeling of the entire business plan, combined with the help of the federal government through the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), we were able to reduce the forecasted deficit to $1.6 million, while keeping most of our workforce intact and salaried. Year ended December 31, 2020

28 Annual Report 2020
Resilient and Thriving Firstly, I’d like to say that it is a great honour to have been selected by my peers to help support CIM, a leading global mining industry organization. As a 19-year-old kid just starting my studies at the Haileybury School of Mines, I could not have imagined how the mining industry was going impact my life, nor did I really understand how the mining industry contributed not only to northern communities but to society at large. My upcoming term as CIM President means a number of different things to me. The mining industry has provided me with so many wonderful experiences and opportunities. I feel quite strongly that supporting CIM to grow and thrive will contribute to improving our society and give other 19-year-old Canadian kids the same opportunities I had. With over 120 years of history, CIM has seen many good and bad cycles. President-Elect Anne Marie Toutant and I will benefit from the strong leadership provided by Samantha Espley and Roy Slack that guided us during this unprecedented year where the COVID-19 pandemic obliterated CIM’s financial support mechanisms. Fortunately, our CEO Angela Hamlyn and her team of seasoned professionals were able to pivot, almost overnight, to a virtual world and continue to deliver the world-class services our industry requires. Supported by our longtime sponsors and our new CIM Corporate Patrons, we have been able to survive. In many ways, the pandemic has made us stronger. We have improved and optimized our operating structures and completed a new strategic plan built on extensive industry engagement. We are the only Canadian institute that represents the full lifecycle of our industry. Our members come from every facet of the mining cycle, from exploration and extraction through to production and reclamation, from the rock face to the corporate tower. We are ready to thrive and advance the collective ambitions of the diverse Canadian minerals industry, at home and abroad.
