Advancing mining excellence

Amid an uncertain world this year with soaring inflation, turbulent stock markets, geopolitical instability, COVID-interrupted supply chains exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and numerous extreme weather events, the securement of responsibly mined minerals, metals and energy required for food production, transportation, utilities, and the energy transition has become critical. This year in Canada, public awareness and support has grown for the key role our Canadian mining industry plays in the responsible and secure supply of these needed materials.

Against this backdrop and tasked with the responsibility of rising to the challenge are Canadian miners and the CIM community. Our CIM branches, societies, and committees, supported by Angela Hamlyn and the central CIM team, have been incredibly busy since the attendance record-breaking 2022 CIM Convention + Expo in Vancouver advancing elements of CIM’s strategic plan and collaborating with partners in our ecosystem.

A few of the notable accomplishments these past months include:

• the addition of several key corporate sponsors and a newly revamped corporate membership program thanks to our membership committee

completion of the 2022 Best Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (BPGMP), one of several CIM guidelines which are principal references for National Instrument 43-101

• a public consultation process for the Environmental and Social Responsibility Society (ESRS) ESG guidance document, which is currently under revision following the feedback

• development of strategic plans by several societies and committees, aligning them with the overarching objectives of the Institute outlaid in the most recent CIM three-year strategic plan, Collective Ambition

• in partnership with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR), launched the We Need Mining. Mining Needs You . Career Ambassador Program, with an opportunity for CIM members to become ambassadors in their communities. These accomplishments and the many others achieved during 2022 are only possible with the tireless efforts, collective knowledge, and generosity of the hundreds of volunteers within the CIM family. Thank you! If you’re looking for an opportunity to share your talents, please reach out to one of our committee chairs or society executive members and get involved – growing the “Canadian advantage” will be critical to continue to build momentum within society for our industry as a responsible, values-driven partner working to solve the great challenges of our times.

Looking forward, CIM will be celebrating our 125th anniversary in Montreal next year. What a wonderful opportunity to come together in community, to share knowledge, connect and collaborate.

Powering Our Success

Thanks to you, CIM continued to thrive through this last quarter of 2022. We have seen the continued advancement of our Corporate Partnership program, convened the new Standards, Guidelines and Leading Practices Directorate and helped actively showcase the benefits of careers in mining. Through it all, I have had the privilege of witnessing the power that our more than 500 dynamic volunteers can have. Your dedication to CIM and to our industry brings individuals, groups and organizations together from all disciplines to connect, learn, build expertise, and cultivate professional development opportunities.

One of our objectives as a global mining community this year is to work on transforming the negative perception that students and recent graduates may have about the minerals and metals industry. After all, we know how much safer, technologically and digitally advanced and diverse this sector has become. We also know that there’s still much more work to be done.

CIM Branches, Societies and Committees have stepped up to confront those challenges. The Health and Safety Society and the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee have developed strategic plans that will guide them in reaching out and dialoguing with broader communities. We’ve also partnered with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) to launch the We Need Mining. Mining Needs You . Career Ambassador Program, through which industry representatives will have the opportunity to share their personal and professional stories to showcase the many benefits of pursuing careers in the mining industry. We also once again partnered with MiHR and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to present the #MiningNeedsYou Virtual Career Fair, which was a huge success this year attracting over 600 registrants and 30 booths.

Over the past six months, we have added to our professional development roster with 17 more webinars and short courses led by your peers and 95 presentations from the 2022 CIM Convention. Also, have a look at the curated course list from our partners at MindEdge. Staying abreast of the latest technological research is important, but so is developing a well-rounded business and leadership acumen. While this report looks back on what CIM has achieved over the last part of 2022, it’s done with eyes sharply focused on the future. We are so excited by the energy, enthusiasm and creativity that CIM staff and volunteers possess, and we are confident that, moving forward, we will be able to continue to harness past successes and achievements as a springboard into tomorrow’s opportunities.

CIM LEADING PRACTICE GUIDELINES FOR

MINERAL PROCESSING

These Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (PGMP) were prepared by the SubCommittee on Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing. The Sub-Committee reports to the Executive Committee of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) which is a Technical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) and incorporates those members of the CIM who are concerned with the processing of mineral deposits. The PGMP covers the involvement of mineral processing professionals, referred to as Practitioners in this document, in providing inputs to the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and providing technical content for internal reports as well as public reports on mineral projects as required under National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101). The PGMP supplement the CIM Exploration Practice Guidelines (2018) and the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Practice Guidelines (2019) which are referenced in Companion Policy 43-101CP to NI 43-101 and recognized internationally.

FORGING THE PATH AHEAD

The Standards, Guidelines and Leading Practices Directorate (SGLPD), formerly known as the Standards, Guidelines and Best Practices Committee, has undergone a busy second half of 2022. We have officially finalized our mandate as of September 2022, a step forward in CIM’s effort to be recognized as the authoritative voice for technical content, global standards, best practices and emerging trends.

The SGLPD oversees the strategy and governance of CIM standards, guidelines and leading practices. It acts as an umbrella group of professionals represented by individuals from CIM Societies, the CIM Special Committee on the Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVAL) and the Mineral Resources Mineral Reserves Committee (MRMR).

The Directorate works with the Mineral Resources Mineral Reserves Committee (MRMR), the Special Committee on the Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVAL) and the CIM Societies to:

• identify and prioritize the creation and/or revision of relevant standards, guidelines and leading practices

• review and endorse the content outline of proposed standards, guidelines and leading practices

• identify which of the three committees are best positioned to develop standards, guidelines and leading practices for future mandates as presented to the Directorate

• ensure that during development, working groups follow the correct process before any standards, guidelines and leading practices are presented to CIM Council for approval.

The Standards, Guidelines and Leading Practices Directorate has formed a governance subcommittee composed of dedicated and passionate industry professionals and is working hard to develop the governance that will drive the development of world-class knowledge.

THE CIM HEALTH & SAFETY SOCIETY: STRATEGIC, ALIGNED AND FOCUSED

The origins of the CIM Health & Safety Society were in the CIM Health & Safety Committee. So initially the work and plans of the committee became those of the Society. The current executive began looking at how the transformation into a Society changed the mandate of the group in terms of individual membership, communications, the Society Charter, and a host of other things. At the same time, CIM was drafting their strategic plan. Once the CIM National strategic plan was implemented, it became apparent that there was an opportunity for the Health & Safety Society to leverage the good work that had been done at the National level and at the same time create alignment between National and the Society by drafting a society strategic plan. To that end, John Doyle, who had been instrumental in the CIM strategic plan, agreed to work with us on a Society plan.

That plan is now in place and the executive has started to implement it. When an additional director was needed, John Doyle was chosen because he is passionate about safety and his extensive experience can benefit the Society.

The Society’s strategic plan includes several general and specific areas of focus. Knowledge-sharing includes white papers, workshops, webinars and a stand-alone Health & Safety Conference. This is in addition to the health and safety stream at the annual CIM Convention. There is a focus on building membership as well. Recognition of outstanding service in health and safety is an ongoing initiative of the Society.

It is an exciting time for the Health & Safety Society as we implement the new strategic plan and look to build our membership. Ultimately our goal is to be a leader in supporting, promoting and recognizing health and safety excellence in our industry.

Professor of Neuroscience, Beau Lotto, is a leading expert in perception who helps brands gain valuable, science-backed insights into their businesses and customers. His keynote presentation at the 2022 CIM Convention entitled “Thriving Because of Uncertainty” uncovered the tools that organizations need to become more adaptable, creative and prosperous.

Dr. Lotto conducted an experiment in advance of the Convention that examined what the workforce wants from the mining industry. The results were published in a white paper that lays out actionable steps that companies can use to recruit and retain people who have the skills they require. CIM-SCIENCE NORTH ONLINE MINING GAME

Coming in May 2023 is a fun, interactive and modern online mining game designed for students, families and anyone who has ever been curious about the mining industry. Launching at the CIM Convention + Expo in Montréal, it will be available in English and French and will come complete with bilingual resources for educators.

Be a scientist for a week | This exciting educational initiative – a first in Canada – is turning students from 100 schools across Canada into scientists for a Week. Thanks to Doris Hiam-Galvez, Hatch, and Dr. Beau Lotto and the Lab of Misfits for creating a program that enables students to directly engage in science, potentially publish their findings and appreciate the potential that a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics can offer. CIM is proud to support of this Canada-wide initiative that fosters curiosity and a love for science among middle and high school science teachers and students.

2023 will mark a huge milestone for CIM – 125 years! More importantly, this anniversary presents a fabulous opportunity to shine a spotlight on the incredible value that the CIM community provides to the minerals and metals industry.
