A white vermouth and an americano aperitif have been launched in the UK alongside a range of Italian sparkling wines by Casa Gancia. It produces wines in the Piedmont region, including Asti 24 – the region’s first sparkling wine made from Moscato grapes in the Metodo Classico style, dating back to 1850. The portfolio in the UK also includes the Pinot di Pinot Brut and Rosé and the Alta Langa range made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Its Vermouth Bianco, created before 1890, is made with Moscato Bianco grapes and a selection of herbs, with ABV of 16%. It is suitable for drinking neat or in cocktails and long drinks. The bitter red Gancia Americano was created in 1966 and became very popular in the 1970s in Belgium and France. Based on young white wines and a unique selection of herbs and spices, the aperitif has ABV of 14.5%. It is perfect for cocktails and long drinks.

A PERFECTLY REFRESHING SUMMER SERVE

COMPETITION SHOWCASES MIXABILITY OF JÄGERMEISTER A cocktail competition to demonstrate the mixability of popular shot liqueur Jägermeister has been won by a bartender from London bar Mahiki. Sponsored by the United Kingdom Bartenders Guild (UKBG), it challenged 12 finalists to create a signature serve for the German herbal liqueur. Frederick Holt (pictured), aged 20, impressed the judging panel with Cosy with Curt, which mixed Jägermeister with port, English breakfast tea, mint and chocolate bitters plus cinnamon. It was inspired by Jägermeister’s founder, Curt Mast. He made it through to a final “shake off” alongside five other bartenders from top venues including Hutong at The Shard and Scarfes bar at Rosewood hotel, both in London. Frederick, in his first competition, said: “I kept my serve simple and delicate to avoid overpowering Jägermeister’s complex flavours and depth, and I think this, coupled with my knowledge of the brand, set me apart from the competition – which was extremely high.” He won an all-expenses-paid trip to Jägermeister’s distillery in Wolfenbüttel followed by a visit to Berlin and its bar scene. The competition was at Club No 41 in Mayfair with judges including Jägermeister’s UK brand ambassador, Florian Beuren. Visit www.barmagazine.co.uk for the recipe.
