INDUSTRY UPDATE
The Dandy Gent, Expands
O
wner of renowned Derbybased barbershop and product manufactory, Shane O’Shaughnessy, is looking for experienced barbers to work from his third Dandy Gent branch opening in the Nottingham City centre this summer. Following a strong growth in business in Derby, Shane feels that the time is right to expand outside of his beloved Derby and into the developing ‘gateway to Nottingham’ adjacent to the city’s beautiful train and tram station. The Dandy Gent was founded in 2012 as the eye-catching brand for busy barber, Shane’s new range of 6 handmade traditional grooming products. These included shaving cream, soap, oil and beard care products. The popularity of the products and its traditional branding led Shane to re-brand
his small Derby barbershop in-line with the products - a move that has proved a master stroke for the Master Barber. Today Shane steers the good-ship Dandy, based at his Irongate shop - and is looking for barbers to continue to build his strong reputation - this time in the neighbouring city of Nottingham. Applications, in the first instance, should be directed to: shane@ thedandygent.co.uk

s the popularity of social channels continue to soar, brands and retailers are .considering how to bring highly visual, memorable and shareable moments into physical stores. Moving further towards spaces which will resonate with the next generation of digital-led consumers. Familiar with the brand? Jack the Clipper has become a household name; renowned for making Londoners look sharp with expert techniques handed down from three generations of master barbers. Situated in the heart of Bow Lane, London, the store elicits a playful satire, ode to the brutal killings of Jack the Ripper. “Tasked with creating the new design blueprint, our challenge was to ensure that the concept felt luxurious and original; whilst invoking the brand story in a contemporary and authentic way,” the studio said. “Several exciting visual cues are introduced throughout the space, referencing the industrial design of the Victorian era and adding a layer of theatre.” As part of this ‘new’ barber experience, clients are also invited down to the Basement Bar, where they are offered the finest selection of drinks. The custom-made bar is a relaxed yet luxurious setting, invoking a ‘Gentleman’s Club’ look and feel.

VTCT appoints three new trustees
V
TCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust) is a specialist-awarding organisation offering vocational and technical qualifications in a range of service sectors. VTCT has over 1,900 approved centres globally, with a market share of 63% within the UK hair & beauty sector. They offer smarter support for brighter futures, ensuring the learner is at the heart of our work, through world-class qualifications and education resources. VTCT and iTEC has added three new board members, exemplifying
the vocational and technical awarding body’s period of growth. VTCT’s qualifications span a range of sectors including hairdressing and barbering, beauty therapy, complementary therapy, sports, active health and fitness, hospitality, business and retail, and learning and development. The new appointments include former Welsh Language Commissioner, Meri Huws (April 2019), Executive Director of M Squared Media, Jayne Lewis-Orr (February 2019), as well as higher education specialist, Stephanie Richardson (October 2018).
levels are new technical qualifications which will be offered by schools and colleges for 16-18-year olds. They are two-year programmes set at level 3 and will be equivalent to achieving three A levels. The T level for hair, beauty and aesthetics is currently under development, although it will not be introduced until 2022 or 2023. Learners will complete a common core programme and then specialise in either hairdressing, barbering or beauty therapy. A consultation is expected on the draft hair and beauty T level in late July. The content of T level programmes is based on the equivalent apprenticeship standards. Unlike apprenticeships which are mostly work-based, T levels include a work placement which only last 45-60 days. A recent report by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has shown that finding enough work placements will be a major concern for providers, especially in sectors such as hair and beauty which are dominated by small and micro businesses. In response, the government has introduced some flexibility into placements, including a trial of employer cash incentives for the first wave of T levels.

THE BARBERS BEHIND THE BRAND – SHOP TALK 1) Fernie Andong @fernthebarber Responsible for model Chad’s look I have been cutting hair for 12 years and had my barber licence for seven, graduating from Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa, USA. What inspired me to become a barber was pretty
18 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
much not knowing how to do a proper men’s cut. I like barbering because it lets me use more of the creative side of my brain, I’m very visual and because I’m dealing with a lot of gradient from light to dark, I find it very therapeutic. It doesn’t feel like work, more like hanging out with friends and cutting hair. My signature look would be blending barbering and hairdressing together. Barbering is a lifestyle, it’s not a job. Once you learn the craft you can go anywhere in the world.
2) Jason Reyes @ iliketocuthair
It all started with cutting hair, little by little I realised I could actually make a living out of this. I asked people in school and the neighbourhood if they wanted a haircut and developed from there. A lot of barbering came from hip hop, when I started out, I cut a lot of musicians’ hair. What makes a great barber shop is to have great service, treat people with respect and provide a great hair cut because where I grew up in Puerto Rico, you had to be good to stand out. Your eyes are your best teacher, continue to practice, the more you work with different textures the more you get it.

PAYMENT AND BOOKING SOLUTIONS
More than just a booking system With the on-going evolution of technology, it is now becoming easier to run a business, no matter the size. The old barbering ways are still popular but booking systems within the industry are ensuring appointments and information is well organised and kept safe for the business.
W
hilst in the Barber industry walk-in appointments predominantly remain, there’s a lot of technology that businesses can be using to further improve their booking rate. So, Salon Tracker software are discussing the benefits of online booking and how this can advance footfall within your business. By offering a solely walk-in service, you’re only attracting opportunity clients who are passing your business, or who know of your barbers and have therefore travelled there specifically to get their hair cut. On occasions such as these, if the client comes into your salon, say they can’t get an appointment at that time, they may then perhaps look elsewhere if they haven’t got long to wait. So, how can online booking help, what are the benefits? If a client walks-in and can’t get an appointment with you right at that moment, with online booking, they can register for your app and see when your appointment gaps are later that day. Not to mention, by offering an app, you are then capturing client’s details in the process, to be able to further market to these customers later. Once you then offer an online service continuously at your barbers, this also helps to improve your client retention. As if you have a regular customer and you offer online booking, next time this client needs an appointment, they can make a direct booking with you at
24 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
their preferred time and often with their chosen barber too. So, for any new clients, if you offer this service from the beginning this then helps to hold their custom too. You also start to further attract customers who may want to book in with you via the app at convenient times, for example over lunch breaks if they work close to your premises, or even after work on their way home. If you only offer a walk-in service, a client may be less likely to chance visiting your barbers over their lunch hour, as they take the risk of you being too busy and then they may have had a wasted journey if they are pushed for time. However, if you have a booking app that clients can use, they then have the confirmation that their booking is
made at their chosen time – meaning that they can just nip out over their lunch hour, or other chosen time! By offering an online booking package, as a business you also have much more control over your appointments and you can start to further identify sales information, including peak booking times. Not to mention, your barber booking system is then accessible 24/7 and being productive even when business doors are closed. You may fill an appointment gap that you may not necessarily have done if you didn’t get a walk in at that same time. Trial Salon Tracker FREE for a fortnight, with no obligation: Email info@salontracker.co.uk or call 0113 350 8230 for more info.

BARBERS AROUND THE WORLD
Adam Szulc A
dam Szulc has been barbering since 1986, a total of 33 years to be precise. He remembers .being a child playing with his toys in a bathtub pretending to shave their ‘beards’. It was about that time when he decided to tell his parents that he wanted to become a barber. Barbering has been a passion in his family for many years. Adam explains: “My grandfather was a barber during the II World War when Poland was under German occupation. He learnt his craft from a German craftsman during his exile. My grandfather was always supportive of my decision to go to the barber school and he was one of my first models on who I practised shaving. He’d still ask me to shave his face even when he was at the end of his days. I dedicated my first book to him.” Adam not only enjoys barbering, he has a passion for music and for many years played the drums in various bands. Which reflects in his barbering work. “My interests about subcultures are intertwined with my everyday work. Haircuts that I do are rawer and a bit punky, but I also like the traditional barbering. My other great passion is history. I like facts, historic details, and I like to combine them all in my work.
28 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Every time I look at a historical figure, the first thing that I notice is their haircut.” We know how popular barbering is in England and how much the profession has grown over the years. Adam has seen a population growth in barbering also but in Poland. He refers to barbering in Poland in the 90s to 2014 as “A great Misery”. He adds: “Stylists were a new thing back then and they were supposed to do everything: cut men’s hair, lowlight women’s hair, do perms, and maybe even match the colour of nail polish to outfits. I believe that a barber and a hairdresser or stylist represent two, entirely different professions which differ in almost every aspect - interior design, history of the profession, different tools and cosmetics, and most importantly, the gender of a client they’re serving.” Adam states both men and females expect different things from their hairdresser/barber. He explains that men need continuity and tradition but a woman, on the other hand, wants to be constantly surprised by her hairdresser. Adam adds: “In old American barbershops, a man was facing the room when seated on a chair was because, he wanted to be a part of the collective, including the waiting room. In a beauty salon, women usually require peace, relaxed atmosphere, and intimate conversation with their
hairdresser. All of that simply cannot coexist in one place.” Adam believes that in the UK there are still many old barbers who are greatly respected and are still shaving, cutting hair and work in their classic ways. Overtime Adam has also noticed that in the British barbering scene there is a lot of individualities and eccentrics, which he thinks is good because the barbering profession thrives thanks to those who cross the boundaries. “All barbershops around the world look similar. They all have mirrors, chairs, waiting areas and receptions. Nevertheless, in Poland after 1989, the year when communism collapsed, everything that was widely related to barbering died. It was shameful to be a barber back then. There was no education, shows, or even tools or cosmetics for barbers and their clients. There is not many of us, barbers faithful to the tradition of that time, left. The majority either resigned or… left to the UK.” There are many trends and fads within the industry and styles come and go. “The ways to cut hair in the UK also differ a bit to the ways in which we cut hair in Poland. There’s more extravagance and geometry. It may be the contribution of Vidal
BARBERS AROUND THE WORLD Sassoon. London as the capital of male fashion and barbering is still leading with new trends and still setting the pace for the rest of the barbering world. For many years now, I and my crew have been attending Barber Connect – it’s a very good event. Slowly but surely Poland is catching up so come see us!” In the UK we hold many competitions and exhibitions. As well as, classes and appetencies for those who are looking to develop their career in barbering, which is why the profession is so popular and enjoyed. Adam teaches a class in Poland, which focusses purely on barbering. “I really do hope that clients themselves will notice who became a barber because it’s their passion and who did that just because it’s fashionable.“ He believes barbering is something you do because, it’s the only career you want to pursue. He likes to think of himself as a teacher, by educating all his family members the true skills of barbering. As a father, Adam tries his best to share his love for barbering with his children. Nikodem (his son aged 16) works beside him and attends Adam’s barber classes. In April 2019 he earned the title of The Best National Barber in Poland, so Adam is obviously doing something right. The rest of his family help as much as they can too. “I have two younger sons: Adam (12 years old) and Frank (8 years old). Basically, they’re growing up in a barbershop.” Adam runs his own Barbershop in Poland called, ‘Adam Szulc Barber’ the name being quite simple is a brilliant trademark In Poland and a symbol of reliable work. For short they have decided to name the Barbershop ‘JAMA’ which means ‘The Man’s Cave,’ Adam discusses his Barbershop further: “Inside the barbershop, you can immediately notice barbering done right. The interior decoration is a mixture of my hobbies: hardcore and
punk music, straight-edge philosophy, history, skateboarding and Steam Punk subculture. We have lots of devices made in the spirit of the Victorian Era, just like from the Jules Verne’s stories. They were all made by a local artist.” “There is a whole percussion set built in the reception desk. In the window cells, you can see the posters with haircuts from our latest photo shoots. Music is playing all the time, which just completes the entire vibe. Inside you can buy various cosmetics from all around the world.” Adam decided to write his own book, ‘The Barber’ this is about the history of barbering, cosmetics, tools, various haircuts, beards and so on, in a way it’s
a kind of a handbook for young adepts but also a massive dose of knowledge for barbers with years of experience. Adam systemized his entire knowledge in that book. So far, they have sold more than 5000 copies in just 6 months. Adam offers great classes but stands by only a few procedures to become a successful barber. “Humility, hard work, respect and understanding for other people, striving for success in your own way, not being afraid of implementing your own ideas and not copying others, taking risks and, finally, education, education, and education!”

BARBERS AROUND THE WORLD
Nikodem Szulc N
ikodem is only 16 years old and lives in Poland, Poznan. He has been interested in barbering for as long as he can remember, mainly because his father runs a barbershop in Poland and has therefore been around barbering most his life. Nikodem adds: “In our family, barbering has always been a part of our everyday life. Even now there are some days when all of us are in the barbershop, working. My sister, as well as my mother, help maintain the order. My sister is also a receptionist and she’s usually taking care of sign-ups, register, and preparing parcels and various orders. My two younger brothers sweep the floors and take out the bins, and my father and I stay chair by chair.” Nikodem remembers sweeping the floors and emptying the bins to get just a peek of the barbering world, until the big day came where at the age of 11, he finally took part in his first training session and knew instantly barbering was the career for him. Although, barbering is his main priority, Nikodem has had interests in the military, especially in airsoft, which he expresses in his barbering work.
30 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
He adds: “I’ve been just as well interested in the military, especially in airsoft. It is my passion till this day. Hence my favourite haircuts are uppercuts, skin fades and customised haircuts with strong military features. I also skateboard, whenever I have some free time on my hands I go out with my friends or alone to the nearest skatepark to practice some tricks.” The barbering industry is constantly growing in the UK and attracting more and more people from around the world. With different styles and trends in each Country, barbers are keen to follow those fads. Nikodem explains how Poland’s barbering differs from UK style and trends. “Most and foremost it’s the way in which some haircuts are done. There is currently an on-going trend in Poland on more classical haircuts, combed back, with parts of all sorts, and slick backs. In the UK, from what we’ve noticed, totally extravagant haircuts are now dominating. Haircuts cut high and crops combed forwards have been popular among teenagers, and not only, for a couple of years now. In
Poland, these styles of haircuts somehow cannot break through.” Being only 16, Nikodem has learned countless skills and a wide range of knowledge since working in the industry. He believes certain qualities make a barber successful, he adds: “This profession takes lots of patience, dedication, engagement and most of all, consistency. If you have only just become a student training to become a barber one day, do not take offence when someone asks you to sweep the floor, wash the windows or take out the bins. These are the beginnings that every barber, great one or not, had to go through. Just like me, my father, and every one of his employees.”

Mathew shows who’s boss! What a great year 2019 was for the entrants of the BBA British Barber of the year competition. The applicant numbers were more than double from last year!
T
he final became a battle between Rachael Flynn and Mathew Guerin. Mathew Guerin gives his thoughts on the thrilling day. “There’s a selection process where competitors need to send in images of their cuts as an application. Those images go in front of a panel of judges and they then choose the best 6 applicants to compete head to head in a boxing ring on the day. There are 2 elimination heats that everyone takes part in before the two finalists are chosen to go head to head in the last round.” With a busy day ahead, Mathew knew he had to push and do his best to show his skills and talent. “The first heat is a flat top category, a traditional and classical style that shows all areas of skill and abilities. The second heat is a freestyle creative category where the competitors get to show their artistic side. Each round is scored on points and the top two competitors fight it out in the final and can do whatever style or cut they want to try and take the title.” Gary Machin a BBA Judge said, “We knew this was going to be a very competitive and exciting final, all the finalists really wanted the title and you could feel the tension build throughout the day and, the adrenaline was certainly flowing in the boxing ring in the final!” “I stood out in my flat top heats, scoring the highest points. In the next round most people were fading, but I produced something creative with colour and revers fade on a tapered haircut to really stand out. This scored me high enough to get through to the final.” “I was up against Rachel Flynn who is an amazingly creative and precise barber and her final model was a really

effective and unique looking female model, so I was worried to say the least. Fortunately, on the day the judges scored me higher and I won the title.” Mathew not only wins the coveted BBA Belt and title of BBA British Barber of the Year 2019 but also takes away prize money of £2,000 and £500 worth of BBA Male Grooming Products, Wahl
Clippers and Sensei scissors. “I was absolutely over the moon. I had worked so hard over that last three years competing all around the country to raise my profile and show the industry what I was a capable of. I am now doing a lot of educating work helping inspire others.”

BOSS TALK
For gents with style and character This month’s Boss Talk is with Lee Thomas, the owner of The Urban Gent. He tells us how he created his business, from coffee to barbering. 1. How did you get into barbering, was this something you’d always planned? Do you have a tale about your ‘journey’? I used to import green beans from around the world to roast and create coffee blends. I have been in coffee since ‘98. One day, I was watching a television programme about beard products and ingredients and looking down and seeing the labelling of what I was using and not recognising any of the ingredients, I began to research the ingredients and look at how they were combined and started to make my own.
2. When did you start your business, and what differences did this make to your life? I started producing my beard
products for myself a year and a half ago and then with the company a year ago once we have everything certified and the website designed. As everything is handmade, I find it relaxing and methodical, it’s a community that I love being in and everyone is so friendly and supportive, I enjoy the charity work and supporting good causes through the local beard clubs.
3. What has been your best moment? One is definitely seeing the whole range develop and grow, listening to my customers and responding to their requests and needs. After attending our first show and successfully networking with barbers who really like the products and rate them, we can’t wait to see how the brand grows and develops over the next few years.
4. Any further ambitions? I really want to grow the range and develop new avenues like

pomades, clays and a conditioning oil to develop the hair care range. We have recently developed and released our own range of Shampoo & Conditioners aimed at Beards and Hair so, we are starting to make moves into the barbering side already. With our natural range and a vegan choice, we can cater for both barbers and end user a like. I would love to take The Urban Gent into other countries and establish the brand as one of the leaders in natural and organic products. SKINCARE AND SHAVING
Help from the pros! Yucel Olmezkaya is a highly skilled barber currently working for MR Barbers, Head of Education, he teaches level 2 and level 3 Barbering and collaborates with West Suffolk College. Yucel is also an educator for the Great British Barbering Academy. He is well known within the industry and has decided to work with The Barber Magazine to share his step by step shaving routine.
Y
ucel believes that facial has become more popular over the years, with a surge in the number of men embracing the beard and moustache trend, but he still thinks a full-face shave is still the traditional service in most barbershops, and in order to achieve the closest and most comfortable shave possible it is vital that you prepare your beard effectively. Yucel says: “Poor shave preparation is one of the most common reasons for shaving irritation and spending just a few minutes getting ready before shaving can transform your shaving results.” “When I shave in the shop, I like to use BBA Men’s grooming product with a combination of Jack Dean post shave products. Using good products to prepare the face is vital as I need the pores opened to be able to have the smoothest shave. I would say 80% of the shaving service is preparation.”
STEP BY STEP WITH YUCEL: STEP ONE Preparation is very important as this can impact on the client’s experience, it can help promote extra services and products, can help prepare the skin and hair to prevent discomfort and aid in the technical execution. All my tools are prepared prior shaving I like to use steamer as this continuously provides heat and moist to the skin to keep the skin at the required temperature for a smoot shave. Consultation, identifying factors on the skin is very important i.e. Hair type, density, texture, hair growth pattern, skin challenges (skin tags, scars, razor bumps) if this is avoided and there are some contraindications this could put your shaving in difficulty.
STEP TWO Exfoliating / face wash is my first product that I apply on the face to cleanse the skin from dirt and oil and doesn’t leave the face stripped or dry.
38 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Natural exfoliating rice particles help remove dead skin and ingrown hairs. This is applied in different massage techniques to stimulate the sebaceous gland and blood flow. Once applied I then use a hot towel to cover the face, this helps to open the pores. I then use BBA shaving butter where this provides nourishment to the skin to reduce any irritation from the razor for a softer luxurious shave.
STEP THREE Lathering and applying shaving cream is an essential part of the shaving service. This lubricates the beard and makes the hair stand out from the skin. Shaving cream must be prepared in good time after the hot towel as we don’t want the skin to get cold otherwise pores will close and shaving will be more irritable for the client. When applying shave cream, I like to use a brush with long bristles, I use circular motion when applying this to keep the pores open and push the lather under the hair.
SKINCARE AND SHAVING
STEP FOUR The actual shaving starts now where I use a cutthroat razor with single disposable blade. Tensioning the skin is very important to avoid cuts and ensures an even shave. This provides a smooth surface for the razor to pass over and prevents creases, which could cause cuts. This is done with the free hand and always follows the razor. First stroke is always with the directional growth and then against, different techniques (backhand, freehand and reverse freehand. It’s a good practice to do 2 passes depending on the beard and skin condition to execute close shave.
STEP FIVE Post shave – once the shaving is completed, we must bring the skin back to its natural condition. I like to
and softens the face with a light, non-shiny and easy absorbing formula. This is how I shave and the routine I follow to execute my signature shaving.
“I recommend my client to shave usually after the shower as the skin would be then prepared and softened for a close shave, after care advise is always given and products recommended.” apply BBA Post shave balm which provides instant relief from shaving, nourishment to repair razor damage and protects the newly shaved skin from the environment. I then apply the cold towel to close the pores and tighten and tone the skin. Finally, apply the face moisturiser which hydrates
Products for shaving and skincare is important and clients should be advised in how to use products correctly. If you have any top tips you would like to share with us, feel free to email a member of the team! We would love to hear what you can share with the rest of the industry.

CHARITY FOCUS
A2B This month’s charity focus is with Armour to Barber, a charity helping ex-service personal reinvent themselves within the barbering industry.
T
.he Armour to Barber movement founded by former serviceman Liam Hamilton.
Liam and Armour to Barber Liam generously devoted 21 years of his life serving in the Coldstream Guards. He was later medically discharged to then be challenged with an adversity that nearly 14,000 forces members face each year- a lack of post- service jobs opportunity. Liam previously had experience within the barbering industry, this gave him an opportunity to get back to what he was doing before he decided to become a serviceman. Barbering gave him a platform to build his own business, and hopefully start a career for himself. He was able to develop many skills: trade and leadership, which he is now able to use wisely towards his career. He decided to join his two past experiences together, with the help of The Bluebeards Revenge, Liam and his Armour to Barber (A2B) programme

are now empowering former service personnel to reinvent themselves, just like Liam wanted to do for himself, he aims to help others develop careers within the barbering industry, with the support desired to do so.
Armour to Barber Thesis Technology Products Ltd. Is a family business established in the 90’s by a crowd of engineers, technical and finance professionals, designing and manufacturing an increasingly diverse range of solutions including NeoCape (barbers cape.) NeoCapes water-resistant hairdressing gown from Thesis Technology, and the charity Armour to Barber decide to collaborate in hope to raise money for ex-service personnel. 100 special edition Jungle and Desert camouflage style NeoCapes were created by Thesis as part of a fundraising idea for Armour to Barber.
Each sale of a Camouflage Neocape generated a £10.00 donation to the charity. The collaboration raised more than £1,000. Matt Woods, Sales and Marketing Lead for NeoCape: “We are very proud to collaborate with Armour to Barber and support this worthy cause. After the success of this initiative we are planning to organise similar events in the future to help raise funds for this amazing organisation.” At the recent Barber Connect exhibition, Armour to Barber were keen to display the fundraising idea, by displaying the NeoCape on their stands proudly. Matt Woods adds: “Armour to Barber aims to assist ex-service personnel to transition into civilian life by retraining as professional barbers. Since its inception Armour to Barber has helped many soldiers to reintegrate through a combination of training courses and work placements with professional barbers. The organisation has proved to be a lifeline to many by providing a network of practical and emotional support needed to re-train, succeed and prosper in the barbering community.” “Following on from this successful collaboration, we will look to reproduce this positive result with a different material for A2B in the coming year.” To find out more about Armour to Barber search: armourtobarber.uk

BARBERSHOP OF THE MONTH
Pure minimalism This month’s Barbershop of the Month is with ‘notjust’ barbershop. Based in the very popular Manchester, owners Tom Burbidge and Nathan Haley challenge the meaning of city centre barbering.
N
otjust are bringing modern men’s hairdressing beyond the norm, and into the creative realm. With a minimalistic style running through their barbershop, Tom Burbidge and Nathan Haley trust each cut is as unique as the collective it is delivered by. Tom adds: “The inspiration for the shop was that of a European taste, Italian and Danish predominantly, something fresh, not a shade of Manchester. Our Art and design heritage are what informs the space, a gallery feel, a modernisation of the barbershop.” They believe each cut is an extension of the collectives’ imagination, their creative ability, and commitment to earning the title of a high-end hairdressers in Manchester’s’ Northern Quarter. Whether you’re looking for a new Manchester Barbers, or are looking to branch out for a high-end Men’s Hairdressers in the city centre, notjust offer the diversity and skill you desire. Northern Quarter was always the ideal location for the notjust studio for Tom and Nathan. From the artistic backdrop of Ancoats and the emerging start-up scene, to the ever-changing art and commissioned work across

the City Centre, notjust simply had to disrupt the Manchester barbering scene with a Northern Quarter base. Tom: “From the services we offer to the barbering workshop for hairdressers of all kinds, discover the new era of barbering with notjust. ‘notjust’ lies outside of the fine line between barbering and creative pursuits.” Being a young barbershop, opening in only 2017. The notjust team have devoted their time and energy into the making of notjust in hope to therefore, receive amazing customer feedback. Tom adds: “Our clients come to us for the refreshing context in which we cut, it’s an antiBarbershop if you like, widening the spectrum of what a ‘shop’ can be. The traditional approach one end and us the other. The principles of Barbering can be applied in a nowadays fashion, traditions must evolve and in 20 years a traditional shop may be different. Time capsuling the practice keeps it in the ‘trade’ Realm, we make art on a daily.”
With always getting compliments on their design and décor, notjust was subsequently featured in The Guardians top 10 Barbershops, so it’s clear notjust doesn’t go un-noticed. “The style of the shop is something of international inspiration, Tom and I both have an Art and style heritage, an eye for all design whether it be clothing, paintings, interior or architecture, our passion and preference spills into the space and brand. European style is injected in our minimalistic taste, tones of Italian and Danish design as a stronger note for sure. “ The barbershop is extremely unique to your standard barbers, especially with the barbershop name. Tom and Nathan decided they wanted a short name for their barbers, because, they preferred the way it looked. Also choosing a name that signified both Tom and Nathan. Tom explains:” We were adamant that we needed a 6 letter or short word, obsessive with the look of name and the aura surrounding it. ‘not-just’ refers to our personalities and attributes, we

love to make, create and are interested in everything under the umbrella of art. Nathan and I began working as barbers as we were drawn to the craft, the creativeness and the sculpture of hair, as if it were a medium not a trade.” Working together and deciding to open a business in 2017 was something that trigged their creativeness, they have many future plans to help develop their business and ensure it is always growing. Tom explains: “Our passion is creation, Forever. Hair is one application of our making, which consumes us these days as we are so driven to take things further and push message and brand into a direction that no other men’s hairdressing company has been before. Our uniqueness is what we want to show and grow. Plans to take our brand to another country are one of our aims. Bringing the design and art element into a truly flourishing state also another, cutting hair keeps us very busy.” Tom and Nathan have faced a variety
of struggles just like any start up business, however they are hoping to focus on their future and provide brilliant opportunities for the business. “It’s been a struggle in some aspects of our timeline as we were forced out of our first stop and have had to self-fund two builds in our first two years. The whole experience to date has been a mind blowing one, hardship and reward on a daily, only recently have we found ourselves being noticed, making top ten barbershops in the UK (the guardian). The people we meet, and our teaching has been extra special. Changing the course of individuals lives by showing them the trade and introducing the craft to the next generation.” The products used in the notjust barbershop need to match the elegance of the barbers and ensure
their products express a sense of style. “As Artists it’s important that we use our own concoctions to enrich our work. Notjust mediums are an array of styling products, created by us. Each of the notjust mediums create their own distinct texture and finish, our range can be applied to any canvas none gender specific, no lines drawn and will help showcase your hair.” To connect, follow notjust on instagram @notjust_

RISING STAR
SPONSORED BY
A great success… This month’s Rising Star is with Joshua Collins from The Ruthless Barbers. When did you realise you wanted to become a barber? To be honest – I didn’t know I did until I tried it! Back in 2014 I was working in a dead-end job and one day a customer asked me how my day was going. Well, I straight up told them I was having a terrible day, I hated my job and I really wanted to try something new. It just so happened that she was the owner of a barbershop and she offered to train me up and give me a job! I’ve never looked back since!
Out of all the things the job includes, what is your favourite? I had a guy come into my shop recently who hadn’t had a haircut in months. His self-esteem was at a real low. He said he usually just asks for a simple 4 back and sides, but I convinced him to just let me do my thing. I switched up his look for him, gave him some tips on how to style it and watched him walk out of my shop a new man with all the confidence in the world. Those kinds of transformations are without a doubt my favourite part of the job.
What’s the proudest moment of your career so far? In 2017, my 7-year-old stepson, Zach, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a cruel and fatal muscle-wasting disease. I felt completely lost at the time but knew I wanted to do something special for him. I decided that I would do whatever I could to get that awesome kid to Disney World and embarked on a crazy, 24-hour hair cut-a-thon. I was blown away by the response from our community and we managed to raise an incredible £10000 to send him on the trip of a lifetime! It’s not just the proudest moment of my career but the proudest moment of my life. Follow little Zach’s story here & feel free to donate to an amazing cause for

If you were to offer anyone thinking about joining the industry, what 3 top tips would you offer? Be professional but remember to have fun. This job is about so much more than the cut, it’s the service as a whole and you’ve got to make your shop a place that people love to come to. Constantly strive to improve and don’t ever be too proud to ask another barber a question. Watch what they’re doing - is it different to what you do? Why is it different? What can you learn? Take photos of your cuts! When people are looking for somewhere to go and get their hair cut, the first place
they’ll search is online. Make sure you’re the person they come across and that they get to check out all your best work!
Do you have any plans that you can share? I’ve had a busy past few weeks highlights were cutting hair at BarberUK and Barberconnect for the first time! But now that things have calmed down, it’s time to focus all my energy on getting a new shop opened in Daventry with the Ruthless team. It’s a project that I’m massively excited to be a part of and I’ve got a real good feeling about what’s to come! Find out more about josh’s work here: instagram.com/ ruthlessbarberjosh
