PROFESSIONAL photographer is seeing life through a new lens after making the switch to barbering after the pandemic made him rethink his future. Richard Frew has been a photographer for more than ten years but has recently become a fully qualified barber after struggling to find freelance work during the coronavirus lockdown. The 33-year-old Aberdonian was working as a freelance photographer when he approached luxury salon Sovereign Grooming, who agreed to train him up to help him pass his SVQ qualification. Since qualifying last year, Richard has

secured a full-time position at Sovereign Grooming’s elite Aberdeen salon on Union Street – plying his trade as a barber with a digital twist. Richard said: “When COVID hit, it forced me to think about my career and what I wanted to do. Working as a freelance photographer at the time, business was obviously not booming and I wanted to turn my hand to learning a new skill. Barbering had always interested me; it was a profession where I could continue to be creative and work with people which is something I’ve enjoyed about photography for so many years.“ To find out more about the Sovereign

ESSENTIAL FIVE

Dean’s top five Dean Gleeson is the co-owner of Mengo Male Grooming, and has over 16 years’ experience in the industry. As we’re taking a look at tools and equipment this issue, Dean supplied us with his top five pieces of barber-tech he couldn’t be without. I love all my tools, but ifI had to pick my five essentials they would be…

The Wahl Cordless Legend They are such a versatile clipper! You can fade with them, remove bulk, shape beards, you name it, they can do it! For me, the new extended tapering arm is the game changer. It saves you having to switch between so many guards, meaning your whole cut becomes more efficient. They make cutting a really enjoyable experience.

The Wahl Detailer I’ve used a lot of trimmers throughout my career, but nothing hits as hard and crisp as the detailers. The line-ups these things give you would make Pythagoras himself happy. They are consistently reliable, and even though they hit hard, I have no problem using them on kids or sensitive skin, as they never catch or cause irritation. My passion with hair has always been creating artwork and patterns. Using the detailers gives me the ability to literally draw in people’s hair, with minimal effort.

Wahl Finale Foil Shaver Let’s face it, nothing makes you feel fresher than a clean skin fade, and that’s where the Finales come into a league of their own. I used to use a straight razor for my fades, but it would always be difficult to blend, and there would be the risk of irritation. The foil shaver allows me to give my clients the look they want, easily and comfortably. I’ve even got my brother shaving his head with these now, to save him time and cost on razor blades. Win-win!

Hairdryer Styling hair used to be something I definitely neglected. I would do a lovely trim, and then just blast it dry and chuck some product in it. I realised though, that even a perfectly executed haircut will lack structure without the foundation of a good blow dry. I’m currently using the Gama iQ Perfetto Hairdryer, and it’s awesome. It’s lightweight and compact, and the diffuser that comes with it allows you to create some great textured looks.

Cutting comb The cleaner your sections, the cleaner the cut. This is something I was taught in my apprenticeship and it’s stuck with me throughout my whole career. I’m always going to be a clipper man, but when it comes to tools, the importance of your comb always gets overlooked. I use YS Park combs, and the retracted sectioning tooth allows you to create clean lines precisely, with ultimate control. It’s got to the point now, where my comb just feels like an extension of my hand, I literally couldn’t do my job without it! Follow @ dean_gleeson_ and @mengo_male_grooming

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Knowing the right stuff It’s no secret that in this trade, things are changing all of the time. With the constant passage of time changing the way we operate in our day to day lives, we thought it was about time we spoke with some pros to discuss the latest tool trends.

A

s so many of you are already so well-aware, the importance of good tools and equipment in the barbering industry is paramount. Having the right tools that suit you, your style and your barbershop allow you to really demonstrate to your clients that you’re keeping up with the demands of a busy shop. James Wakely (@j.wakeleyhair), Owner of Unknown Barbershop (@unknownbarbers) in Shrewsbury, Shropshire has been in the industry for a hot minute, and has had the ability to try and test many tools over the years. Ultimately, it’s important to ensure that you’re looking into brands that give not only quality tools, but quality service for your barbershop too. “Over the years I’ve tried many tools but my three favourites are my Quartered Steels Scissors, my BaByliss Pro Super Motors Clipper and my Skeleton Trimmers,” James says, “As a lefty, good scissors are very few and far between. A friend suggested I try Quartered Steels

and I was blown away by the value and the quality and the service from those guys. The scissors are balanced and sharp, making cutting a pleasure. The clippers and trimmers from BaByliss make my job effortless. The machines can handle any hair type that walks into the shop, and for me are unmatched.” Manufacturers are improving the equipment found in barbershops all the

12

thebarbermagazine.co.uk

@thebarbermagazine

@BarberMagUK

time, so it’s paramount to keep an eye on what’s improving with newer models as frequently as you can. James continues: “Tool manufacturers are constantly looking at innovation with their products, to make them more powerful, quieter, run longer and cooler. Keeping an eye out for new equipment is a must, as the constant stream of innovation within the industry allows us /BarberMagazine

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

to ultimately offer a better service to the clients, and we are in a service-based industry after all.” James suggests that a great way to investigate what could be a great fit for your barbershop is to start checking out some YouTube channels, such as the Rum Barber. They offer many in-depth, non-biased tool reviews to help you choose the best tool for you! Barbering is becoming more and more of an industry where the need to keep up-to-date is of importance. By keeping up with the latest trends, you’re also investing that time into the latest trends that your clients may be after.

Bristol-based barber, Charlie Lacey aka @charliethebarber._ of JT Barbers shares their thoughts: “You will be able to experiment with more things and use them to generate new ideas within your cuts. I also believe it’s important to stay up to date, as the latest tools help you build credibility and value, and to show clients you are keeping up-to-date and current. This is the generation we now live in!” Due to the ever-lasting growth of the industry thanks to social media, keeping up with the latest trends should be one of the cornerstones of your business. According to Charlie, clients will

/BarberMagazine

@BarberMagUK

appreciate the use of profits to purchase good quality, high-standard equipment: “I believe they pay for this service and deserve the best, with the best tools on the market. People nowadays are drawn to all these new cool tools and equipment, so it then makes them drawn to your business to experience this.” Not only is keeping all of your tools up-to-date one of the most important parts of running a barbershop, you’re also going to want to make sure that you’re keeping the maintenance of them up to scratch. Charlie continues: “If you have a pair of old clippers clogged with hair, they aren’t going to do the job for you, your work will suffer. Kobe Bryant didn’t wear flip flops playing basketball, did he? So, we should be using quality equipment and taking care of it in order to perform at the highest standards. Bad tools could lead to bad haircuts and no one wants that!” Ultimately, you’re going to keep an eye out for the latest tools and trends, making a conscious effort to stay ahead of the game and showing to your clients that you’re unique and not just one of the rest. Your clients will love it, and it will be reflected in your work, providing more revenue and a greater footfall.

SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION

Finishing Touches Group Emma Furlong of Finishing Touches Group and FTG Clinics is here to give us an insight in the magnificent world of SMP, how it can be beneficial to your business and how their referral schemes are changing the industry.

What can you tell me about SMP?

Scalp micropigmentation, SMP, is a treatment where pigment is implanted into the skin, using a digital device similar to a tattoo gun, to create the illusion of hair growing out of the scalp, in thinning or bald areas. During the procedure, precision implants or single ‘dots’ are deposited into the surface of the scalp to re-create a natural looking head of hair. The treatment protocol follows multiple sessions, an average of three, initially to achieve the final result, with colour boost treatments required every two plus years. SMP is an innovative hair loss solution that is an evolution of, and perhaps can even be considered a hybrid of, traditional body art tattoos and cosmetic micropigmentation.

Where did it come from and is this just another fad?

SMP has been around since the early 2000’s before the industry saw a marked increase in awareness around 2015. SMP is now available on the high street, with some stand-alone clinics specialising in just SMP, within medical hair loss and cosmetic micropigmentation centres

and even some specially adapted hairdressers and barbers. The long-lasting effect of the treatment coupled with the fact that the results are instant gives this hair loss solution a leading edge.

How can barbers benefit from SMP?

SMP could provide those looking for a lasting solution for their hair loss concerns with an option, without taking them away from your services in the future. Training is available all over the UK. Courses typically cost upwards of £2.5k and cover all you need to get started. If you are not ready to invest in training, a great alternative is to work with SMP clinics through a referral

14

thebarbermagazine.co.uk

@thebarbermagazine

@BarberMagUK

scheme. With a basic understanding of the treatments available and types of hair loss that can be treated, you can refer your clients. The referral then goes to the SMP artist, who conducts a full consultation to go through all the elements of the treatment. Your clients would return to you for their hair appointments, and you would receive a referral fee based on the SMP they had. It’s a great time to enter the market! With an existing clientele to tap into, barbers are finding that adding SMP via referral or in-house is a viable business option. SMP offers a new way to offer something more, introduce a new revenue stream and create the barbershop of the future. /BarberMagazine

John Barber & Sons Industry proclaimed “John“ is the founder and owner behind John Barber & Sons, and gives us a peek into how the company works, and why they’re right to add a unique spin to your barbershop.

Can you please introduce John Barber & Sons to our readers?

John Barber & Sons is the one brand that is shaking up the furniture game a little bit with our products, especially our chairs! We focus on individuality. We want to make sure to provide each and every barber with their own custom chair, something like a stage they can perform on, representing their shop and personality. Our slogan when it comes to customizing and creating your barber chair is that CREATIVITY HAS NO LIMITS.

and represents new school barbering, and the lifestyle that comes with it. He contacted us to create the most unique barber chairs Germany has ever seen. Based on his five favourite colour combinations of Air Jordan 1 sneakers, we created a concept for the matching barber chairs. We sourced the exact same leather colours and created a concept of the chair, which reminds you of the sneakers. We wanted to make sure that the chairs we are creating for him meld together with the concept of his barbershop and his personality.

are no limits. You can choose a chair from our 40 serial models, which you’ll find at johnbarbersons.com, and tell me that you want to change certain parts. We have over a thousand leather options and hundreds of frame colour options. We also have our own embroidery and branding workshop, which means you can simply brand your chair with your shop logo or concept. Stop using barber chairs everybody is using and stop destroying your shop design with limited options. Make sure your whole personality and interior melds together and gives one message.

CREATE THIS STYLE

Pompadour with jelly roll Jamie Eastwood, owner of Jeast Cuts, has been barbering since 2014 and opened their own shop in 2017. From the band flags on the ceiling to metal through the speakers, the talent from Jeast Cuts are here to walk us through a pompadour with jelly roll.

T

he pompadour with jelly roll as is a classic look which remains maintainable outside of the barbershop. With it’s roots coming from the 50’s, it was a very popular haircut and style with the greasers of the time. Normally, you’ll see this haircut with far longer hair on the sides, however, I decided to skin fade the sides to give it a modern edge. The style itself was made popular closer to this generation because of films like Grease. Follow @jeastcuts and @jeastwood

CREATE THIS STYLE

Step one

Step two

Step three

After creating a central section, trim through from rear to front to create a slight taper with the back being shorter and the front being longer. This will create a guideline through the hair. Due to the style, the central section is very important as this is what will set the main shape for the rest of the hair to sit on. Then, dry the hair into shape.

Remove bulk hair off the side while creating shape. A grade 2 or 1.5 open works best. Remove a small amount of bulk from the blend clipper over comb. This will again give a guideline and also give you less work to do later. Then, set your skin line with trimmers and foils.

Now you can start to fade. With a 0.5 closed set a new line a good couple of centimetres above your skin line. Then, flick this 0.5 line out while gradually opening the taper arm. As you open the arm you’ll find the line will gradually disappear. You can also flick slightly into the blend area as the arm becomes fully open.

Step four

Step five

Step six

You should only be left with one heavy line now. This will be the difference of length between the 0.5 and skin. Repeat what you did with the 0.5 guard but instead use the clippers bare. Start at the bottom with the zero closed, flick and slowly open the arm. Again, you can flick above where you’ve already faded to ensure all lines are gone.

You may notice a very faint line between the skin and the zero. To eliminate this, use the corner of the detailer just over and on the line. While the detailers are in hand you’re going to edge up the front of the hair line.

If the hair has moved throughout the haircut, you can re-wet and re-dry the hair. Then, use your product of choice to create the final shape and finish off your jelly roll.

BARBERS AROUND THE WORLD

Can you please introduce yourself?

Barbering has been my profession for almost 12 years. I started as a hair stylist and when beards started to become more fashionable in Armenia, I started to evolve into a barber. I love this profession and can’t imagine my life without it.

What can you tell me about the barbering scene in Armenia? It’s been nearly five years since barbering has become popular in Armenia, but the field is still young. There are not as many barbershops in our country as there are in western culture, which mostly comes from local trends, cultural behaviour and

stereotypes. But, me and my colleagues are working on it and there is noticeable change. We hope it will become more and more popular in the near future.

regions of Armenia and other countries. The money from those master classes goes to charities, such as local orphanages.

What can you tell me about where you work?

What are some of the key differences between UK and Armenian barbering?

I started as an employee in a beauty salon, but for almost seven years, I’ve owned my own barbershop where I work with my small but very enthusiastic team. The barbershop has an oldfashioned style but the newest and best equipment. There is a small bar, a couch and good music playing in the background to make a comfortable environment for the customers. I give master classes in different

One of the biggest differences that I can mention is that Armenians have a very difficult kind of hair to work with. It will be very hard for barbers from other countries to cut the hair or beard of an Armenian man. I’ve worked with clients from various cultures, with different races and nationalities. But, for me, it was much easier and I liked cutting their hair. Another difference is the mentality. It is hard to follow trends with Armenians. When I offer something new or creative, most of our people are not brave enough to try it. We are a conservative nation with lots of standards and stereotypes.

Are there any general thoughts that you’d like to share with our readers?

Work hard. The more effort you put in, the better the result will be. Barbering is not only a way to earn money, but a way to be creative, to learn and grow by reaching other cities and countries. It would be very sad for me if I was only known as a good barber in the city where I live. Follow @arsengevorgyan__

BARBERSHOP OF THE MONTH

BLACC + BLOND Anil Salhan, Owner of BLACC + BLOND, tells us all about their barbershop, how they’ve developed the shop interiors and some of their top-tips to surviving the industry!

B

LACC + BLOND have a team of staff that pride themselves on taking traditional barbershop values and shuffling all of them around, creating a unique space which “could easily be mistaken for an art gallery,” according to Anil. The BLACC + BLOND Slow Hair Space is inspired by the architecture and interior spaces of places where the design is minimal as well as conceptual. Being based on the edge of the most emerging part of the Jewellery District of Birmingham, the team are combining a touch of contemporary and conscious living to their clientele and the area. Anil tells us a little about the ethos of the brand: “The space is unisex as I want BLACC + BLOND to be a place for everyone. I believe there are so many divides in society right now, so I wanted

22

thebarbermagazine.co.uk

@thebarbermagazine

@BarberMagUK

/BarberMagazine

BARBERSHOP OF THE MONTH

to curate a space that brings people together.” In regards to the interiors, Anil mentioned that when they initially moved in to the unit, there wasn’t much to take in. A blank canvas, if you will. Anil continues: “Most people hire an architect or interior designer, but I had a clear image of what I wanted and designed it all myself. “I wanted to create a space that allows you to be yourself. A space where you don’t fit into a stereotyped image. Traditionally men’s places would be darker, moodier and quite intimidating. They would have a stag’s head on a wall and give off an image that if you didn’t have a big beard, drink whiskey and smoke cigars then you aren’t a ‘real man’. Similarly, female salons would be draped in glitter, gold and diamonds and are sometimes even pretentious.” The barbershop has a focus on a Japanese concept called Wabi Sabi, which is about embracing natural tones, textures and ageing processes. Anil sees that BLACC + BLOND is not just a hair brand, they are a “people brand”. In January 2021, Anil started to concentrate on how BLACC + BLOND could become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. After intensive research spanning months, Anil found many ways in which they could improve. “I didn’t want to just do one thing or be accused of greenwashing ourselves. If we were going to go sustainable, I wanted to set a new standard. I launched our initiative on April 22nd 2021, World Earth Day, and

titled the project ‘GREEN is the new BLACC” Anil continues. They changed their energy provider, their toilet paper supply, stocked more ethical product brands and even changed their refreshment offerings. One of their biggest ventures was to donate 10% of all new client fees to planting trees globally, with the goal being to plant 1000 trees in a year. So far, they have helped plant around 3000 trees. Anil has dubbed BLACC + BLOND a “slow hair space” due to the team being advocates of slow living, taking their time and focusing on quality. The next inclusive step that the team was able to bring to the table is the fact that the pricing is gender-neutral. Anil explains: “I know there are salons out there that already do this, which is great, however most of those places have a higher percentage of female clients, whereas we have a 50/50 split. To change our pricing structure so drastically has rarely been seen before. We have made all prices the same, no matter which gender a client identifies as.” BLACC + BLOND is an inclusive space, providing everyone with a one hour appointment, so there is no need for anyone to pay more than anyone else. The team are constantly searching for ways that they can do better and do more for the world. The staff love being a part of the team, the clients love the ethos and this will only lead to more growth in the near future of BLACC + BLOND. @blaccandblond

/BarberMagazine

@BarberMagUK

Anil offers some tip on being a barbershop owner: 1. Don’t play to salon/barbershop stereotypes. 2. Calculate and structure all your figures properly to ensure you stick to budgets. 3. When it comes to design – be involved and don’t leave it all to a third party! Create as much flow as possible for people to walk around without stepping on each other’s toes, as well as client privacy. 4. Create change and spread awareness, whether it be with sustainability, inclusivity or mental health. 5. Think about extra touches you can add to your salon that clients can enjoy. It can be as simple as a quality cup of coffee or adding an aroma diffuser into the space to create a relaxing vibe. 6. Use social media and any other tools you have to keep in constant communication with your clients. Keep them informed of any offers you have on, any new initiatives/projects you are working on and any events you are planning.

FURNITURE

Concept Salon Furniture Kevin Lewis, co-founder of Concept Salon Furniture gives us an insight into the furniture brand, how they’ve progressed over the years and their unique stance of leasing equipment to barbering businesses.

A

longside my brother Frank Lewis, we set up Concept Salon Furniture in 1989 to offer quality barber and salon furniture at realistic prices. Originally, we were a manufacturing-only business, manufacturing salon mirrors, reception desks, storage and wash areas. This was mainly for local salons and barbershops in North West England and North Wales, with quality and service being our main strong selling points. We have moved on since then. We still manufacture a custom made range of salon furniture and barbershop furniture from our manufacturing base in Aintree, Liverpool, and can arrange delivery throughout the UK. Our showroom, which is open five days a week from 9.30am, showcases our ranges of custom made furniture, including our very own Vintage Barbershop which, although

24

thebarbermagazine.co.uk

never sees a haircut or shave, is an actual set up of a barbershop in every detail. This is there so our clients can see, try and experience the possibilities of what can be achieved. They can also choose colour schemes and tailor the design to create their own unique made-to-order barbershop, made here in the UK with full warranties and guarantees supplied. We are also distributors for other wellknown brands including Takara Belmont, and have a selection of their products in our showroom including the Apollo 2, Dainty and GT Sportsman barber chairs for clients to see and try. We can also advise on lead times and finishes available, and can quote on an individual basis dependant on client requirements. We are competitive with our pricing and can offer free delivery throughout the UK. We can also arrange competitive

@thebarbermagazine

@BarberMagUK

equipment leasing on any of the products and packages we offer, making purchasing quality furniture much easier and realistic by spreading the cost over an agreed pre-set period with the option of owning the furniture and equipment outright at the end of term for a small additional payment. To own and run a successful barbershop is no easy task in a very competitive market. You need to be pretty savvy in so many other areas. Being a great barber and knowing your trade inside-out does not guarantee success. Being able to offer clients a good service is vital, of course, and having quality chairs and furniture can only enhance this ethos of offering the best possible presentation and service to your loyal customer base.

THE GREAT BRITISH BARBER BASH

The Great British Barber Bash The Great British Barber Bash is slowly taking the world by storm. With this in mind, we decided to catch up with some of the winners from the highly-anticipated Manchester show to find out about their victories and thoughts. Follow @greatbritishbarberbash and check out all up coming events at www.greatbritishbarberbash.co.uk

Liam Harries Nathan Manson Browne

My name is Nathan Manson Browne. I’m from Cork and I’m 22 years old. I’ve only been barbering for a short time but I’ve loved every second of it. I entered the GBBB New Blood competition not expecting to qualify. So, to finish third out of some amazing barbers, I was really delighted! The event was amazing! I got to meet some amazing barbers and some amazing people on the GBBB team and it was amazing to get a taste of what the events are like. Hopefully, I’ll be back at another one very soon!

My name is Liam Harries, I’m from Crymych located in Pembrokeshire. I’m a full-time lifeguard and I do barbering in my spare time. So, I entered the new blood competition hosted by the GBBB to see how I was getting on in the industry with no shop experience, thinking that entering a competition was the next step in evaluating my work and progress. Following this, I was fortunate to have been named in the list of ten finalists to compete up in Manchester. To my surprise, winning the competition was something I never thought I’d ever achieve and still hasn’t quite sunk in fully. The Great British Barber Bash is just an amazing experience! Going to an event full of talented barbers showcasing their work with likeminded people, sharing their knowledge is so inspiring to any level barber. There’s nothing else like it. @BarberMagUK

THE GREAT BRITISH BARBER BASH

Serwez Khan

Ladies and Gentlemen, and all the stylists and barber enthusiasts reading this, my name is Serwez Khan aka ‘SIJ’ as known locally and I’m from Rochdale. I’m 33 years’ old and I have been barbering since the age of 21 due to the passion for the art of barbering. I started barbering in a spare room in my house, where I would cut and style the hair of my friends for free, partaking on a college course in hairdressing at Rochdale College. Years later, in 2018, I opened my first barbershop in Rochdale and here I am today gratefully smashing the styles, perms and cuts into 2022. I absolutely never expected to win. What an honour it was! I always attend the GBBB events to take in the wicked atmosphere, to network with other barbers, to get hints and tips from others, and to improve as much as I possibly can in my barbering for the sake of my clients and skillsets. I believe we can all always improve, and the best way to improve is by learning from each other and with pure dedication in the profession, due to the passion we have for it. I want to thank GBBB for hosting and organising such events. It’s a way we can all learn from one another and become better, putting the barbering profession in the spotlight. The atmosphere at GBBB events is phenomenal and I hope to see you all at the next event. As a reminder to myself, barbering is a form of art. Barbers are artists. Put dedication and passion in, and we can all achieve the best in this field of artistry. Peace out! @svsbarber

Lucas Piveteau

My name’s Lucas Piveteau. I am a 17-year-old barber from Brighton and have been cutting hair in a shop since I was 15, but my journey to becoming a barber started when I was 13. From a young age, I have always had my mind set on becoming a barber. I used to really enjoy going to the barbers, getting my hair cut and watching them create their own art. I was fortunate enough to get a job at Barber & Frank in Brighton. Since I joined, my passion for being a barber has gotten bigger and bigger. The Great British Barber Bash event in Manchester was a great platform for young barbers like myself to show their talent. I’ve been to multiple shows in the past in London and they are always interesting and exciting to attend.
