The Destination For Inspiration! Sleep, Europe’s hotel design and development event, returns to the Business Design Centre in London on 21-22 November, with an exhibition of over 150 national and international suppliers, a Conference featuring some of the foremost influencers shaping global hospitality, the Sleep Set design competition, and Spaces, which showcases products in specially designed hotel environments.
T
he event is recognised for successfully focusing on issues which tap into emerging hospitality design trends, and this year the chosen theme is ‘Loyalty: Lessons in Love.’ In a unique collaboration with Ipsos Loyalty, the global leader in customer experience, satisfaction, and loyalty research, Sleep 2017 will consider how to create captivating experiences that connect with people emotionally, sow the seeds for enduring memories and, ultimately, make guests fall in love with the hotel. “Sleep is a community of boundarypushing innovators and design philosophers who are intuitively aware of how spaces affect human nature,” explained Joel Butler, Brand Director of Sleep, reflecting on the theme. “Sleep 2017’s theme plays to this strength. Whether family, friends, colleagues, or hotel guests, the qualities of loyalty and

this year include Loloey, Chelsom, Phillip Jeffries, Fabbian, Perrin & Rowe and GROHE, Sleep’s Foundation Sponsor for the past ten years.
The Exhibition With 32% of exhibitors coming from Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Denmark, Holland, and the USA, amongst other countries, this year’s exhibition is more international than ever before.
“GROHE has been a key partner of the Sleep Event since its inception,” said Marc Gilbert, GROHE’s Vice President Projects EMEA. “We all know that being loyal to the right partner is rewarded in so many ways over the years, so we think it is very apt that the theme for this year is based on loyalty as we look forward to another successful year.”
Sleep has always attracted a loyal fan base, which is reflected in the fact that one third of those showing this year are returning exhibitors. Familiar names
Among Sleep’s 2017 newcomers are classic British brand ercol, which has been steadily turning its attention on the hospitality sector, Czech Republic
06 : in.SHOW lighting designer Sans Souci, and French bathroom brand THG Paris. Such is the status of Sleep that many companies, both the old-hands and the debutants, use Sleep as their platform to launch new collections. This year, expect to find the first ever carpet collection by Kelly Hoppen MBE, designed and manufactured in collaboration with Brintons, two new spectacular technology-enabled glass lighting fixtures from Sans Souci, and seven new ranges from Designers Guild including vinyl textured wallcoverings, upholstery jacquard weave, and the reissue of Varese, a plain cotton velvet. Other new launches will come from British lighting brand Chelsom, who will be previewing a selection of standout pieces from its new collection, and Italy’s Fabbian, who will be launching METROPOLE, a system which uses textiles and integrated LEDS to create feature room dividers and acoustic buffers. In the bathroom arena, THG Paris will be presenting collections from its Contemporary Style range, including Collection O developed in partnership with Studio Putman and Christofle, and Le 11, designed by Alberto Pinto. VitrA will also be showcasing its new Water Jewels Basin and Miniworx Tiles for the first time in the UK. Other highlights to look out for include

CaberlonCaroppi, Daydream Ligne Roset, at Sleep for the first time, and showing four design-led ranges targeted at the hospitality industry, including Amémdé, Humphrey, and Oxydation, alongside its MOLD light, designed by Ukrainian industrial designer Kateryna Sokolova, founder and creative director of SOKOLOVA design studio. Engaging Spaces Introduced in 2016, the 19 showcases will be located just under the Sleeper Bar and will see suppliers such as 10DEKA, Bushboard, Crosswater, Fabio Alemanno, Roca UK, CaberlonCaroppi, and YPRT, create inspiring installations ranging from bathrooms to wet rooms, lobbies and outdoor spaces. The stands offer design inspiration for indoor and outdoor environments by allowing visitors to experience collections in specially created hotel settings. Highlights include Milan-based interior design firm CaberlonCaroppi Studio, whose stand will present Daydream, their new vision for hospitality design. Located above the bed, Daydream is a new technology called a ‘technowindow,’ which features a series of playful moving images sourced from different locations and environments, including trains, moving landscapes, and a luxury ocean liner. With travel at its heart, Daydream seeks to create a new
kind of ‘hospitality experience’ and is the result of several years of research and trial. In the technology space, newcomer Bang & Olufsen will be demonstrating its latest products targeted specifically at the hospitality sector, including its new BeoSound Shape, which will form part of its installation in the Spaces showcases. BeoSound Shape is a fully scalable and modular wireless audio system designed with acoustics in mind and therefore ideal for environments such as hotel lobbies and restaurants. Bang & Olufsen will also be presenting BeoVision Horizon, a 40” and 48” UHD television, hotel branded remote controls, and a wide range of guest room Bluetooth audio systems. Sleep Talking: The Conference The two-day, free-to-attend Conference will be packed with the foremost influencers shaping global hospitality, debating the challenges and aspirations driving the industry, and tapping into the undercurrents shaping its future. The opening keynote will be from Tristan Auer, whose work includes Hôtel de Crillion and Hôtel Les Bains, both in Paris. He describes his objective as being to create spaces for fabulous moments. “I see my role as similar to that

Day two will see architect Eero Koivisto, the co-founder of Stockholm design practice Claesson Koivisto Rune, talk about projects such as Hotel Zander K and Hotel Bergen Børs, to illustrate how architecture and design can work harmoniously to create spaces with abstracted and honest Scandinavian beauty. Principals of Singapore-based WOW Architects | Warner Wong Design, Maria Warner Wong and Chiu Man Wong, will be in conversation with conference moderator Guy Dittrich, with a session called ‘New Concepts of Luxury,’ where they will discuss their thoughts on the responsibilities of designers to create new meaning in hotel luxury. Other Conference sessions include ‘The Post Cool Hotel,’ with Henrietta Thompson, editor-at-large of Wallpaper*, Hannah Carter Owers, director of Universal Design Studio, and James Soane director of Project Orange, and ‘Slow Design,’ a discussion between Ilse Crawford of Studio Ilse, Quentin Dante from STUDIO Q, Indonesia, and Motti Essakow, founder of Rhythms by Design, UK. The ever-popular end of day Development Roundtables will also be returning this year on day one. Hosted by Benjamin West’s Managing Director Daniel Englender, these sessions offer the chance to talk with top professionals from the hotel development, owner, investor, and operator sectors. Table

Bang & Olufsen: BeoShape hosts will include Blanche Van Berckel from Fairquest and Partners, Daniel Johannsen from Campbell Gray Hotels, Florian Kollenz from 25hours, and CBRE Hotels’ Jane Lees. Sleep Set Inspiration The Sleep Set translates the year’s theme into physical form with leading design companies creating concept installations that range through the deeply allusive and deconstructed to the immaculately detailed and essentially hotel-ready rooms. Structured as a competition while approached as a collaborative exploration, the Sleep Sets this year reflect global reach and cross-disciplinary experience with the four participants bringing a spectrum of cultural, geographic, and industry perspectives to the mix. They are Stonehill Taylor, the hospitality-focused architecture and design studio from New York City, London-based MKV Design, Il Prisma, with studios across Italy and in London, and 1508 London. The winner will be announced at lunchtime of Day Two. Raising the Bar Design and architecture studio Sundukovy Sisters will be bringing their unique brand of bold and idiosyncratic design to London by way of the pop-
up Sleeper bar. Following in the wake of several award-winning Sleeper Bars conceived by international design practices over recent years, sisters Olga and Irina Sundukovy’s reputations for creating the trend-setter venues on the Moscow wining-and-dining scene promises to ‘raise the bar’ yet again at Sleep this year. This year’s theme, ‘Loyalty: Lessons in Love,’ was embraced by the sisters, whose own declared mission is to work only with clients and on projects they love, where they can expand the boundaries of design and do something new and distinctive. “Our design for the Sleeper Bar will emphasise the importance of human interaction in eliciting loyalty; not only loyalty between people but loyalty between the brand and individuals,” said the sisters. “We will be using reflection and light to suggest the infinity of mankind while capturing the inner world of each guest in a moment of time. Loyalty is born out of our inner and outer worlds coming together.” For more information and complimentary registration, visit www.thesleepevent.com

A Week In The Life Of Stephanie Dunning Stephanie Dunning has designed schemes and interiors for private clients throughout the UK and overseas since 1989, and was previously Deputy Chair of the BIDA. Stephanie is married to Peter Everard of The English Joinery Company, and with seven children between them they live in a recently re-constructed 18th century house close to Salisbury. Monday i love Mondays, the week starts with a morning of meetings and social media. This is a fairly recent activity to our timetable, but social media is now so important for any business and especially one that is design-led. firstly we have a run down on what is happening during the week, who is going where, and what deadlines have to be met. My senior interior designer Jenny and i have started a weekly notebook ‘indigo Blue’ which will be launching soon on our website, as well as an informative ‘indigo Blue’ podcast which listeners can tune into, and subscribe to hear Q&A sessions with ourselves and other designers, discussions on many design topics - and we break script to give you an insiders’ view of the design world.
Penny does instagram and Lizzie updates the website. The rest of the team continue with their general tasks. it is a little-known fact that a design studio needs not only interior designers and interior architects, but accountants, CAD technicians and project managers to complete the picture. We have our delivery of Graze boxes mid-morning and always have a bowl of fruit on the table. Tea and coffee are always on the go as are Spotify, but it has to be without words or i start listening to it! Lunch is a time for chat and eating, i try to keep it light, sometimes it’s tricky when we have a massive deadline. Afternoons are for email catch-up and design work. Currently we have two of
our very large projects that are at the crucial and very busy stage of specifying and ordering all ff&e (furniture, fixtures & other equipment), whilst we are in the planning and drawing stages of several other large projects, plus numerous smaller ones. This afternoon i am choosing artwork to complete the ff&e schedule on these two projects, and adding the breakdown of the curtains and blinds to estimate which is the pricing programme we have used for 20 years, it’s invaluable. Monday evening is club squash night, followed by supper with my husband. Tuesday Today Jenny and i are meeting a new client in Bristol, he is a successful developer and has a fabulous home, but it looks like a typical generic

development. He has asked us to create a home that is about everything they love, but works. This will mean saying goodbye to the cream carpets, everywhere and the cream tiled floors everywhere else. It is going to be a brilliant project for us - great client, reasonable budget, and an open mind. He says he called us because “we practise the dark art of interior design.” He looked at our web site and has seen other projects we have completed. Love it!
read the book and sometimes we don’t, nobody worries about that bit, but the conversation and the food are always fantastic!
Jenny is brilliant; she has taken notes of everything we discussed with the client, we already have a measured survey of the house with floor plans and sections, but took measurements of window and cill heights. The timeline is agreed so off home to report back to the team and start on this project next week.
Many of our clients return to us if they move, buy a second home or just need a revamp or extension of their existing home. They become good friends and it is a joy designing for them. So 9am on the coast with my husband Peter everard of The english Joinery Company, and Jonathan, our CAD technician and interior architect, measuring and discussing the design, then up the road to an old barn where I am meeting Jenny to discuss redesigning the kitchen/dining/sitting

room, the entrance/drive, front door, master bedroom, bathrooms, and the estate colour. Back to the barn, then Jenny and I are off west to meet a new client and an architect who we have worked with before, to discuss the interior design of a vineyard’s new reception area, meeting and wine tasting rooms - the main house is yet to be built and will be part of the discussion. Squash match this evening, it’s at home so no travelling, thank goodness after today! Thursday riding 9am until 11am - my passion - I ride twice a week, I would do more but there just isn’t the time. There is a fantastic event stable up the road where they are a kind enough to let me ride one of their horses. If I hadn’t become an interior designer I would have gone back to riding professionally. Although
in.Her LIfe : 13
I did train and qualify as a physio at St Thomas’s London, I just didn’t have the passion I have for design. Back in the studio and now working with Jonathan on the design of a town house in Cambridge for a young professional couple. The floor plans are pretty straight forward but the exterior rear elevation is tricky. Getting from the ground floor to the garden and from the lower ground floor up to the garden has to be seamless and easy, but the heights are an issue. I am in love with Crittall-style doors and windows, they look just fabulous in a graphite or bronze colour. Now we have the technology to create these with
double glazing the options are endless, although they do not fold back in a series, which we have to make clear to our clients from the outset. We have to have the final price for one of our big jobs completed by tomorrow, so the last couple of hours are spent with Jenny going over the figures yet again. If you want to be an interior designer, you need to be competent at maths, and if not make sure everyone else is… Dog walk and supper, just Peter and me, bliss! Friday Dress down day! Jenny and Debbie
aren’t in as they work part time and the 4/3 days work/play works really well. The studio is just a bit quieter, and today Penny, Lizzie, and I will get all the schemes for one of our large projects laid out on the design table with the paints, tiles, flooring, furniture and lighting images ready for Monday. We have a presentation a week next Thursday and so need to live with the schemes for at least two weeks to know we like/love everything. We have already been working on this for three months with the drawings and inspiration images. Now it is a matter of checking everything is covered from the sofas to the loo seat, and the pull handles on the kitchen
14 : in.Her LIfe units. for a job of this size - a large five bedroomed house - there will be between 1300 and 1500 individual items that have to be specified, this does not include designing the floor layouts, elevations, specifying joinery and mirror detail, cornicing, doors, colour schemes, and outdoor furniture and paint colours. We have to be so organised; interior design and architecture is unlike any other profession I know. The attention to detail is paramount but if you can’t deliver your client’s expectations on budget and on time then you have not fulfilled your role as an interior designer. We may always have fruit on the table but a slice of cake on a friday is a bit of a treat! friday evenings are either a trip to the theatre in Bath or Salisbury, or we visit one of our local restaurants or bars. I try not to drink during the week so friday nights are keenly anticipated. Saturday riding first thing, such a great start to the day, then a quick game of squash followed by a visit to Waitrose as six children are home for the weekend, always a treat. The afternoon is spent cooking, and hopefully an early evening trip to Josie eastwood’s Gallery and the Autumn exhibition. We love the collections she puts together and recommend our clients to her. Sundays I am going to lie in today, then go for a family walk, lunch with the family and then chill. We have a really hectic week coming up, and what makes this even more exciting is that with improved technology, lighting, TVs, AV systems and building techniques all add to the extensive possibilities that are available in design. Interior design is something you live and breathe all the time and you have to be on it constantly to be as good as you can possibly be. However I wouldn’t change it for anything else. stephaniedunninginteriordesign.com

Suite Success Scotwood Interiors, the interior fit-out and office refurbishment specialists, has just completed a fit out of a suite of meeting rooms for long-standing client, Royal London Group, in the company’s offices at Queen Street, Edinburgh.
T
he 14-week project involved striping out the existing air conditioning, partitions and flooring and the creation of ten new meeting spaces of varying sizes, with folding screens to increase flexibility. Walnut panels, timber veneered ceilings and glass walls create a sophisticated environment, while designer curtains and wallpaper, digital prints and bright soft furnishings lend a modern twist. “The Scotwood team did a great job delivering this work,” said Craig Yule, Facilities Manager at Royal London Group. “They managed to complete a very tight programme on time despite long lead times for some of the products chosen. We are delighted with the finish and the service provided by Scotwood.” This project follows the fit out of four other floors as part of a year-long project to refurbish Royal London’s Head Office. Green Machines If you’re in the market for new workspace furniture but you’re concerned about sustainability, there’s good news: advances in sustainable materials and credible certification programmes are making it easier than ever to find greener options, and avoid adding synthetic chemicals to our interiors.
W
hether you’re looking to kit out a home workspace or to update a whole office, you’ll naturally consider ergonomics, materials, colour, quality, and cost. You may also want to use furniture to express your personal or corporate style. But what if it’s your style to create a healthy space that’s contributing to a healthy planet? You’ll need to think about the entire life cycle of the piece, taking into account the resources used to make it, the energy costs associated with transporting it, and the ease of disposal. Comfort manufacture a range of solutions that are designed for the wellbeing of the user without compromising on reduced environmental impact. The perfect example of a product to tick all the green boxes is the Mirus chair, manufactured in the
United Kingdom by Comfort UK. Our ergonomic seating range offers a variety of functional task chairs designed to not only offer complete ergonomic adjustment and support for the user, but also exceed sustainability standards across the sector. Using up to 84% recycled content in the manufacturing process and with the end product offering up to 98% recyclability, the Mirus is the epitome of a cradle-to-cradle product; ideal for discerning upcyclers and recyclers. With a selection of frames, finishes, and accessories, and a choice of mesh, leather, and fabric upholstery options – including Camira’s popular Xtreme range - you can unleash your creativity by customising your own bespoke office chair. Xtreme is a modern crepe weave fabric made from 100% recycled polyester, which diverts waste from landfill and saves virgin raw materials,
so you know that almost every part of your chair has minimal impact of the environment. Materials we bring into our interiors can cause serious - and seriously damaging - air pollution. Some synthetic materials or materials treated with synthetic substances can release toxic chemicals into the air. Comfort’s chairs are GREENGUARD Certified which gives assurance that products designed for use in indoor spaces meet strict chemical emissions limits, which contribute to the creation of healthier interiors. Going green has enormous advantages - it’s worth the time, effort, and investment to make sure you give your furniture the best chance to work with and for you, and for generations to come. A Delicate Strength The Naperon Mirror by Alma De Luce Mirrors and glass offer stunning options for interiors - adding mood, and creating the illusion of space. Juliet Davies reflects on current trends…
L
aura Smith of Laura Elizabeth Glass (lauraelizabethglass.com) told us she sees a key trend in glass, showing no signs of slowing, is in creating objects with origin and authenticity.
Bespoke glass panelling by Sterling Studios
“Designers and craftspeople are increasingly focusing upon making handmade glass with this in mind; exploring its mercurial qualities, developing work and celebrating the medium of handmade glass,” she said. “In a world of homogenised
products, time and again, consumers are turning towards skilled craftspeople working within the medium of handmade glass to create unique lighting and interior accessories.” Exploring this theme, Laura’s debut collection combines beautiful metals with hand-blown glass. The application of metals in the hot glass process, by its very nature, allows organic and unique patinas to form within the glass.

The Cascade Chandelier, from Laura Elizabeth Glass
Sterling Studio’s backlit glass panels ten years working with handblown glass and metals, I’ve found glass lighting a unique way to showcase the material of glass and the skill involved,” explained Laura. “My Cascade chandelier, debuting at Maison & Objet in January 2018, was designed with a shower of water droplets in mind. The chandelier features handblown teardrop pendants with silver and copper leaf inclusions. The central idea behind the Cascade droplet aims to create a dreamlike space of calm and reflection. The metals within the glass create distortions and reflections which are unique with every pendant.”
Art Deco has been a slow burn trend for some time now on Houzz (houzz.co.uk), and looks set to continue in popularity. “The hallmarks of the style are glamour, luxurious materials, and detailed craftsmanship,” said Victoria Harrison, editor of the home renovation and design platform. “Ornate mirrors and mirrored furniture are key pieces for this look. Look out for bevelled edges, fan shapes and slim brass frames. Bring in the bling with chrome, silver, and glass accessories.” To maximise light in a small space,
Victoria suggests lining alcoves with floor-to-ceiling mirrors. “This is a classic trick for reflecting light and creating the illusion of a larger space,” she said. “If you section these mirrored panels into squares, it will also bring a dash of 1930s style to your living room.” Helena Costa, founder and interior designer at Alma de Luce (almadeluce. com), sees small mirrors with frames coming back - a look seen at the Isaloni International show in Milan and Maison & Objet in Paris.
in.VOGUE : 23
Cameo Mirror by Gavin Coyle image © Diana Stainton “Places once occupied by walls or canvas now give rise to mirrors of smaller dimensions with multi frames,” said Helena. “Especially with rounded or fully round corners they inspire professionals seeking simple but elegant decorations. With charm, once placed they become the centre of interest of any space. “People want, increasingly, more and more different styles and designs to create a premium and personal piece. A mirror can magnify a space, has the power to ‘illuminate’ it, and may give an intimate or opposite character, but it can, above all, define our space, reflecting exactly who we are, representing what we have in our soul.” Sterling Studios (sterling-studios.com) are seeing the trend for glass finishes in the design landscape moving towards completely bespoke glass and mirror finishes which create memorable unique statements in a room. “Although antique mirror finishes are still popular, we are working more and more on projects which use a combination of
our techniques to create designs which have a personal story behind the work,” explained Fiona Sutcliffe, Director of Sterling Studios. “Sometimes these are part of an overall decorative scheme – for example backlit glass panels with a ‘Lalique’ style carving of fish, seaweed and mermaids were part of a glamorous bathroom design in Paris – but often the glass will form the main decoration in a room.”
drew a detailed 3D map of the local area in mirror behind glass with a mottled deep green colour behind,” said Fiona. “We added lots of tiny figures, cars, and dogs for added fun, and this allowed for more personalisation.” There is a revived confidence in the use of colour across the interior design industry, and Sterling Studios are enjoying this, as colour behind glass offers an added vibrancy.
This “We have particularly recently suits finished a smaller room with pale Smoked Hereford Cluster rooms pink and yellow Chandelier from Fritz Fryer such as lifts, stylised flowers powder rooms, and on a sparkly navy-blue bathrooms, where glass adds glamour background which looked absolutely as well as a being a practical surface to stunning,” Fiona added. “There has been clean. a marked revival in very fine traditional églomisé work which involves fine “We recently created a bespoke glass figurative and grotesque style painting in panelling for a powder room where we strong colours with gilding in silvers

Fritz Fryer’s Aston Lantern and golds.” Sterling Studios are currently working on a very large room entirely clad in cast glass, which will certainly give a new perception on the use of glass in interiors! “When it comes to mirrors and modern life what I’m seeing more and more of is simplicity and integration between materials,” Gavin Coyle, of Gavin Coyle Studio (gavincoyle.co.uk) told us. “People don’t want a distracting ornamental object surrounding or interfering with a mirror - after all it’s your image that’s meant to be the centre of attention. You can have a selfie at the touch of a button with your phone so why can’t your homeware products do the same? The Vikel Mirror by hem is a design that comes to mind, which is quite subtle, like a fly on the wall! Otherwise minimal interventions like the Hay Strap mirror can be effective and charming too.”
Similar to those elements is what Gavin aims for in his own designs. “With the Cameo Mirror I wanted to create a setting for a mirror using a round ball design that’s minimal and clean, a design that’s seamlessly integrated with the woodwork that’s the basis of my craft,” he said.
very eye catching.” Karen noted that one thing to be aware of with coloured glass is that whilst looking beautiful in a photograph, it can give a very strange light and should be avoided if it is the main source of light in a room with a practical function.
Fritz Fryer (fritzfryer.co.uk) have seen a move back to glass in lighting trends recently, moving away from more industrial looks and metal shades.
“A pretty blue shade for example will give off an unusual light which you may not want to be working by,” she explained. “That said, they do look very dramatic and make a wonderful feature in the right setting.”
“Using a mixture of different textures within the glass has also become very popular, such as the clear and ribbed glass used together in our Aston Lantern,” said Karen Wallis-Smith, Director, Fritz Fryer. “Colourwise, smokey glass is very on trend and looks great when used in a globe light or a cluster of globes. Using a mixture of different coloured glass within one cluster can make a dramatic statement and looks
The properties of glass make it perfect for lighting, as ambient light is emitted around the fitting and you can play with textured glass creating interesting patterns. The new technologies incorporated into light bulbs mean that there are now several, beautiful and ecofriendly lamp options to further enhance the light fitting.

SBID and BITA join JFS The 2018 January Furniture Show (21st - 24th January, NEC, Birmingham) will have two prestigious interior design partnerships - the SBID (Society of British Interior Design) and a first-time show partnership with leading textile association, BITA (British Interiors & Textile Association).
T
hese partnerships will strengthen the links between the show and the interior design sector. Contract buyers from the interior design and hospitality sectors increasingly use the show to source everything from wall art to practical mattresses, and statement upholstery. more and more exhibitors at the show recognise the value of working with designers and contract buyers on specific (often long-term) projects, with many developing contract specific collections. Partnering with interior design associations makes the show more inclusive to the whole of the furniture industry, and the show organisers see these partnerships as an important element in the event. the partnership with the SBiD will include a hosted coffee lounge for its members in the Premium Design section of the show, in Hall 2. President Diana Celella will again be part of the judging team for the product focused Furniture Awards which are judged on the opening day of the event, and she states that partnering with shows such as the January Furniture Show demonstrates the SBiD’s commitment to supporting the furniture industry at national level. BitA will have its own stand and the partnership aims to raise the fabric and soft furnishings profile at the predominantly furniture event. the Fabric Pavilion branding will change to the Fabrics & Soft Furnishings Pavilion and will move to Hall 2 - a location which offers even more space to companies who wish to exhibit. Speaking of the partnership, BitA Director Diane Harding said, ”the British interiors

Palatial And Pampering One of Switzerland’s most legendary destinations, the Bürgenstock Resort, has reopened with MKV Design as a principal designer of this nine-year, multimillion-franc project. The studio was responsible for several highlights within the resort, one of which being the interior design of the magnificent The Palace Hotel.
T
he Palace Hotel has been reinvented as a synthesis of grand fin-de-siècle architecture and state-of-the-art interior design. it opened originally in 1904, and is a magnificent example of classical architecture. While working in line with all the principles of historic preservation, MKV Design has essentially created a new hotel. The ground floor public areas have been recreated as faithful interpretation of the original, while the function areas and guestroom levels above are contemporary in style. The lounge has been sensitively restored to replicate the original space with its famous pink marble effect columns. The new furniture has been custom-designed and is complemented by antique pieces and original paintings from the hotel’s vast collection. The colour palette has been returned to its original greens and gold. RitzCoffier Restaurant is an homage to legendary haute-cuisine chef Georges August Escoffier, who was at the helm of the resort’s earlier, much acclaimed Escoffier restaurant, as well as famed Swiss hotelier César Ritz. The restaurant abounds in restored memorabilia from the past - over 1,000 vintage copper pots, an original cooking range that has been repurposed as the buffet counter and reclaimed elements, such as an antique hearth and imposing original timber doors. The Salle Palace (the pre-function area) is adjacent to the lounge and provides a traditional interior for more formal events. By contrast, the 2,200m2 Conference Centre is modern in style. it includes the Lakeview Ballroom, with its intricately carved timber cladding depicting a traditional Swiss mountain
scene, and wonderful unique chandeliers that have been created using cut glass pieces from chandeliers that were once installed in the original resort. The Palace Hotel offers 108 superior rooms and suites. Designed to be comfortable and homey, the rooms have
been created with built-in casegoods in natural oak, worn leather armchairs adorned with felt wool cushions, and faux fur throws. www.mkvdesign.com

Bring Flooring Colour Back With more flexible work patterns, the need to attract and retain employees, and a wish to steer workers away from home, Jeremy Broadhead, Commercial Manager at Heckmondwike, considers why good design has never been more important in office flooring.
O
rganisations are finding it increasingly difficult to attract and retain good people, which means the design of the office can be a deciding factor for a candidate considering whether to work for a particular company. it can also have an impact on retaining them within the workforce for a longer period and being more productive whilst they are there. According to studies of workplace productivity, the most significant factor in determining an employee’s ability to focus is their physical environment. A well-designed environment can have an impact on employee health and happiness and can increase productivity by 12%. Floorcoverings play an important part in creating a work environment that is both comfortable and motivational. Accents of colour are increasingly being introduced into flooring in breakout or communal areas, with solid blocks of colours being used to zone these areas. the latest trend is for the use of graded colours through large expanses, such as open plan workspaces. For example, Array, part of our Creative range, integrated with ‘on trend’ colours such as Fuchsia, to create a vibrant, contemporary feel. this more subtle use of colour enables office designers to use colourways that may previously have been ‘out of bounds’ and classed as too striking or tiring to the eye in an office setting. office designers are using research into how certain colours provoke psychological and physiological responses in a workplace setting to aid
their floorcovering selection. the use of warmer colours has been shown to maximise productivity levels, minimise fatigue and create the right environment for productive team-working. this has led to a move away from purely neutral colours for meeting areas to creating vibrant borders that not only provide demarcation but also add an element of style into the office space. Contemporary office space is increasingly taking in aspects of the home and adapting it for the workplace to create an environment that is both comfortable and productive. As part of this, the planked look in carpet tiles is being widely adopted. Planks can be laid in a variety of formations, including the ontrend Herringbone or monolithic layouts, which are proving popular. Clean lines continue to dominate in office flooring design, with many new styles of carpet featuring linear effects, like Array. this method of breaking up large blocks of colour is opening up endless possibilities, because of its aesthetics.
Colour is also being more widely used in the workplace. research by the University of texas revealed that grey, beige and white offices induced feelings of depression, especially in women. White was found to create a cold, isolated feeling; yellow is linked to more positive emotions of happiness, optimism and excitement, accents of reds and orange were identified as creating an energetic environment, whilst blue and green were revealed to have the more calming effect on office workers and to ease anxiety. Careful consideration of floorcoverings is extremely important, especially when you recognise its impact not only on attracting staff, but also on maintaining the productivity, health and happiness of those working within the business. Heralding History When international property developer Finchatton recently unveiled Knighton Place, it was the first £120m new-build townhouse scheme to be built in Knightsbridge for over ten years. Designer Cansel Symen, Head of the Finchatton Design Team, tells Juliet Davies all about it.
T
he five seven-storey townhouses in Yeoman’s Row celebrate the rich history of the borough, with each home named after British architects who have helped shape Knightsbridge; Blomfield, Eyton, Leverton, Caroe and Elsam. “Knightsbridge is a fantastic location for families, with Hyde Park on your doorstep and plenty of restaurants and facilities, but the area lacks homes built with the modern family in mind,” said Andrew Dunn, co-founder at Finchatton. “Knighton Place townhouses address this through generous spaces where families can gather, and for families with international links, there are guest suites for when friends come to stay.” One townhouse was sold off-market, and the remaining homes launched with Leverton House, a five-bedroom family home, featuring 6,255 sq ft of versatile accommodation, with a bespoke
42 : in.BRIEF
Linley kitchen, gym, temperaturecontrolled wine room, media room, and secure underground parking (accessible by a car lift). Some of the townhouses also feature extensive spa areas with whirlpools and spa treatment rooms. Knighton Place provides a dedicated onsite concierge giving residents access to concierge services which would usually only be available within apartment schemes rather than individual townhouses. “With interiors by the firm’s in-house design team, each residence is spacious and perfectly proportioned, with period detailing alongside the latest trends in home technology,” Cansel told me. “From the exterior, a red stone facade complements the stunning architecture of Yeoman’s Row. Each home incorporates above and below ground terraces with living green walls.” Knighton Place in Yeoman’s Row was
architecturally designed by Squire and Partners. “Yeoman’s Row presented a rare opportunity to create a series of bespoke residences in a road characterised by richly detailed Victorian artists’ houses,” said architect Henry Squire. “Drawing inspiration from decorative elements on the neighbouring houses, we introduced a series of contemporary crafted facades with subtle variety. “A palette of Cove Red and Dunhouse sandstones are used in a smooth and textured finish, with projecting bronze framed windows carefully articulated across the elevation.” Almost all (90% to be exact) of the items within are bespoke. Ideas and inspiration for the interiors were drawn from art deco and contemporary furniture books, and then changed or amended slightly to ensure they are in keeping with the overall scheme.
“As a designer, you often have to create and design pieces from scratch, as the pieces and furniture in your vision are not usually available ready to buy,” Cansel explained. “For example, within the dining room, there was a vision for a feature pendant. Inspiration for this was taken from elsewhere, but the item was made to order so that the design would work perfectly for the space. We created a rectangular shape with hand-blown, frosted lampshades instead of fabric.” Every rug throughout is bespoke, with each colour chosen based on the colour palette for the room. The designs range from a geometric pattern in reception, to an Ikat print in the dining room, which gives and antique feel and blends well with the contemporary pieces. The custom-made furniture has finishes of grey warm walnut and veneer oak, with hand-painted and brass inset
in.BRIEF : 43 bespoke door knobs. Most of the upholstery items also have delicate details, such as contrast piping on the headboards and nail detail. “We used well known fabric houses (Holland & Sherry, Robert Allen, Fox Linton, Dedar, Turnell & Gigon, Stark Fabric, Zimmer & Rodhe) because they have amazing quality, texture, feel and colours,” said Cansel. “We also used very modern looking, luxury plait design fabrics (cinema sofa fabric) as it gives connection from past to present, and brings a warm welcoming feeling. Every fabric texture has a story close to my heart, which I always try to include to give my projects character. When we show round viewers it’s always so rewarding when they act and feel relaxed straight away within the property! “I love using wool and lined mixed curtain fabrics, because they drop beautifully without any effort and always look fantastic; the dining room curtain fabric is the perfect example of this.” The upholstering fabrics were chosen because they have a great combination of fine wool and linen content. “I also selected fabrics with smaller patterns to give depth and practicality, as larger patterns feel flat and plain,” added Cansel. “I am very fussy about fabric weight on all upholstered items, and always look for durable fabrics that pass high rub tests. “When working on the spa I knew that I wanted a special water effect finish; but could not find anything with a strong 3D effect. I eventually discovered Modular Art. They were able to create a textured wall for the spa room that had the perfect modern texture, with just enough 3D effect.” This runs across the large wall so well, no one will get tired of looking at it when in the jacuzzi! www.finchatton.com

The scheme keeps a record of those working in the construction sector who have achieved or are committed to completing a recognised constructionrelated qualification. This can be checked instantly by site managers, who can check the information on the card using a smartphone, tablet, or PC, giving them reassurance that the cardholder is qualified for the job they do on site. Members of approved Professional Bodies are able to qualify for a Professional Qualified Person (PQP) card. Up until now, members of the BIID were not eligible; meaning that access to building sites was only granted at the discretion and instruction of site management, and restricted the amount of involvement in these projects. As interior designers are involved in spatial planning and the redesign of building interiors, a considerable amount of time is spent on construction sites working alongside contractors, architects, joiners and other trades covered by the CSCS cards. The decision to grant BIID members access to these cards means that interior designers will have considerably greater access to construction sites, making it easier to be involved in every process of the design project without any potential delays on site.
“The BIID aims to support interior design professionals and is committed to creating solutions to vocational barriers,” said Charles Leon, President of the BIID. “CSCS cards are hugely beneficial for interior designers working on building projects, and we are pleased to now offer this to our members.”
by the Secretary of State. In the UK, the BIID is a full member of the Construction Industry Council and, as such, is part of Government consultations to advise on new policy and legislation. Internationally, the BIID is represented on the board of the International Federation of Interior Architects and Designers.
To apply for a CSCS PQP card, BIID members must have passed the appropriate level of CITB health, safety and environment tests appropriate to the occupation. By ensuring construction workers hold the appropriate qualifications for the job they do on site, the CSCS card plays its part in improving safety and standards on UK construction sites.

ocated in the heart of Cambridge, the Tamburlaine hotel is a new 155 room luxury hotel from the Dublin-based O’Callaghan Group. Designed by the team at Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, the hotel joyfully fuses traditional and modern design, which echoes the heritage of the town along with its emerging prominence as a vibrant metropolis. Tamburlaine’s welcoming entrance has a dramatic double-height lobby with a feature staircase and overlooking library above. The ground floor flows between four different food and drink areas, each with its own particular offering and all tied together with a sense of quality, provenance of local ingredients, attention to detail, and distinct design. “The Tamburlaine Hotel was named after the Asian Emperor in the eponymous play by Cambridge icon Christopher Marlowe,” explained Blá Farry, senior interior architect at Bryan O’Sullivan Studio. “The essence of the hotel strives
to capture the Persian flavour, strength, eloquence and passion conjured in the imagery of the play, combined with the traditional collegiate Cambridge aesthetic. This is what we had in mind when designing the stunning rooms and what we wanted to reflect in our tile choices. “In the reception, visitors are met with a striking tiled floor design made up of white, red and black tiles from the Program range. The client very much wanted a tile finish in reception and we felt the Victorian style aesthetic suited the Cambridge look and feel. However, we were conscious that an actual Victorian tile might look out of place in a new-build and in a space that vast, so opted for the Program range as it allowed us to fuse a contemporary tile and palette into a large scale traditional pattern. “The restaurant, a masculine, sophisticated space, sits as a juxtaposition to the adjoining Garden Room. Solus Ceramics supplied the
vibrantly patterned floor tiles from its emerging Treasure range. The eclectic and contemporary artisan eatery features the bold Elpis tile, which is emblazoned with a chic blue and grey geometric print, brought to life in a rustic hand painted style.” The Garden Room, which is truly like a page from The Secret Garden, offers guests an al fresco ambiance in the comfort of the hotel, and features a traditional black and white flooring pattern from Solus Ceramics Victorian influenced Program 2 range. “In the botanical inspired bathrooms, we wanted to create a strong retro feel and needed a glossy tile in bold colours to complement the Banana Leaf wallpaper design,” Blá continued. “The Diffusion range offered us a strong palette of traditional colours and included all the traditional tile trims to create a more authentic look and feel.” www.solusceramics.com
