Gilly founded Koubou Interiors in 2004 after graduating with a Distinction at the Regent Academy in London. Koubou Interiors specialise in healthcare design and have worked on a number of prestigious projects including the refurbishment of a private hospital based in London, and a centre for children with disabilities and their families which was opened in May 2014 by the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Monday My week starts with an early morning to feed the cats and then I head into the office to prepare for our team meeting at our showroom in Crowthorne, Berkshire. Mondays always start with this, so we can discuss the progress of current projects and what the week ahead holds for the team. This will be the first meeting for our new team member Donna who only joined the company last week. We are all looking forward to working with her and welcoming her into the team.
Gilly Craft
10 : in.HER LIFE We have been in our premises for eleven years now, sitting on the main junction of Crowthorne’s High Street and Dukes Ride which was named after the Duke of Wellington. We are a few hundred yards away from the main gates of Wellington College, the famous public school. Surrounded by beautiful buildings and twelve acres of land, we are very lucky with our tranquil setting! After our team meeting, Hannah, who manages our social media, comes in for a meeting in which we discuss content and trends for our posts and social media engagement for the coming week. Then it is straight to work on a refurbishment project that requires some finalising on the kitchen designs so that we can get the approved details off to the joinery workshop. Although I like to get a bit of fresh air at lunch, it’s lunch ‘al desko’ today as I have to leave early for a meeting at a hotel in Binfield. I am meeting with a financial specialist who has been a colleague and friend for several years. We started a property networking group several years ago and the meeting is to catch up on plans going forward for the group.

Tuesday We were delighted to attend a drinks reception for ‘Building for the Future’ – a charity that has just been awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. We designed and built the centre for the charity in 2014, so today’s reception is to celebrate its recent award win. Koubou Interiors has also won several awards for the design of the centre, including Best Regional and Best UK Design at the International Property Awards.

12 : in.HER LIFE I then caught up with some paperwork and started some specifying on a project where we are waiting for planning permission. This is a challenging albeit interesting project where we are adaptating a residential home for a disabled user. The gentleman concerned had a very bad car accident which left him severely disabled. His wife’s wishes are that he stays in his own home, but the house does not meet his needs and we are working with the council at the moment so that this can be achieved. This afternoon I am getting VAT exemption certificates underway for the sanitary ware. On Tuesday evenings I tutor interior design at a local centre. I used to tutor for Bracknell and Wokingham College but when the business got busy, I had to leave. I still kept getting requests, so I like to do ad hoc sessions and work with students on Tuesday evenings. Wednesday Up very early again today to get to my breakfast networking group which meets at a golf club in Camberley. Our speaker this morning did a session on how local business can help each other. When you work in a small community rather than in London, mutual support is very important. I got into the office around mid-morning and was brought up to speed by Carolina, my assistant. We had received an email from Houzz to say we had been awarded a Recommended badge for our listing on their professionals website which is a positive start to the day. The rest of the day was filled with working on the assisted living project for our disabled client. We finished the layouts of the bathroom and kitchen, taking into special
One of Gilly’s peaceful residential designs consideration the needs of our client. One of the things we are hoping to do, if the council agrees, is to take out the front window of the lounge and replace it with a door and ramp to the front drive. Must be our lucky week!! I’ve just received an email to say that Koubou Interiors has been awarded Best Healthcare Interior Design – Home Counties, and Best UK YouthFocused Project for our ‘Building for the Future’ project by Build Magazine. We have now received four awards for this project which is marvellous. This was definitely the most rewarding project we have ever worked on. The charity had been raising funds for seven years and came to us to help realise their vision. The centre has been a great success for the charity’s own
award shows and we couldn’t be happier. The children and their families that use the centre love it, which is hugely rewarding. Thursday Up very early as have to catch the 07.02 train to London for the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) Annual Conference, which is at a new venue this year, the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington Gore. A wonderful day of talks from a variety of speakers, including Karim Rashid and Orla Kiely who have been made BIID Honorary Fellows. After the Conference is the BIID’s AGM. We welcomed our newly elected President Susie Rumbold who is taking over from Daniel Hopwood. Daniel has been the BIID’s
14 : in.HER LIFE President for the last two years and was stepping down after completing his tenure. Other new Council members were announced including myself, as I am taking over the CPD Committee Chairmanship from Susie. This also means that I will have a place on the BIID Council. I am very much looking forward to this role and hope I am worthy of it. Next, I’m off to the marvellous BIID Summer Party for the membership at home automation specialists, Cornflake. Cornflake were the perfect hosts and made a memorable evening for us all. Friday After partying the night away in London, I allowed myself a late start today! When I got back, I had an email in from a lead from two months ago who has a restaurant that they want refurbished. I had met with them at the time but despite trying to talk to them, I didn’t hear back from them. Today I received an email to tell me that they now want the refurbishment to go ahead and want it done in August! Saturday One of my good friends owns a local beauty salon which I try to frequent at least twice a month for relaxation and lovely treatments. I treated myself to a facial this morning which was very therapeutic and much needed after my busy week. Back home for a DVD and a relaxing evening with my husband. Sunday My daughter is studying Veterinary Science in Warsaw and Sunday mornings are when

Style On Tap They’ve not historically been the most noticeable or ‘wow’ gadget – but taps are probably the most used item in the kitchen, so let’s make them stunning!
K
itchen sink and tap specialist Caple (www.caple.co.uk) has updated its Aspen range of single control taps with two new models made from the highest grade, solid stainless steel, set to add a professional look and feel to any kitchen style – the new Aspen and Aspen Quad. “Sleek and streamlined, our beautiful, new solid stainless steel Aspen and Aspen Quad taps benefit from an easy to operate, single lever design and will look stunning when paired with our stainless steel sinks, ” said Caple product manager Luke Shipway. Both new Aspen taps feature a single lever ceramic valve and require a minimum of 0.5 bar pressure. Developing and bringing an efficiency and professionalism to the many wet-working areas in the kitchen are key factors that have been central to Dornbracht’s philosophy for many years. This year Dornbracht (www.dornbracht. com) introduces Sync, a completely new model for the kitchen with pull down fitting. Launched at this year’s ISH, Sync offers more flexibility, more freedom of movement: this innovative new product is born of the desire to continually optimise and improve kitchen processes. Sync combines modern, luxurious design with functionality.

Dornbracht’s pull-down Sync a rounded, curved spout. Leading Italian brassware manufacturer MGS (www.mgstaps.com) reacts to the emerging trend for mixed-metal interiors with a fine collection of new metallic finishes available across its entire collection of stainless steel kitchen taps. The pictured SPIN D Mixer with Dual Pull-out Spray has undergone a formidable design transformation thanks to its new matt 24K gold finish which elevates both its design and contemporary aesthetics. Offered in a matt or polished appearance, customers can now choose from the newly available and highly deluxe 24K Gold finish, or new Copper and Antique Brass finishes which support the current Black Steel and natural Steel options also by MGS.
MGS achieves this lustrous gold finish through gold plating the stainless steel tap in genuine 24 carat gold. This electroplating process allows a thin layer of gold to be applied to the stainless steel tap to give the look and feel of real gold, without the expense! By electroplating SPIN D in the new 24K Gold finish, MGS have created a tap which has a greater resistant to wear, keeping it tarnish free for longer. 100% lead-free, the stainless steel composition of the SPIN D Kitchen Mixer by MGS is also a positive move away from the standard chrome-plated brass tap found in the UK. Thanks to its stainless steel composition, SPIN D is easy to clean, naturally creating a resistance against bacteria to provide a non-porous and extremely hygienic surface.

The new contemporary JULIET by Perrin & Rowe epitomises exquisite design elegance with the benefit of high function and single flow spout. Its single lever handle is perfect for easy control, delivering hot and cold water with less fuss, but all the impact! Available in either a Chrome, Nickel or Pewter finish, JULIET by Perrin & Rowe epitomises original contemporary style, hand crafted from the finest raw materials all sourced and manufactured here in Britain. Perrin & Rowe is defined by innovation not duplication, and used this year at KBB Birmingham to showcase its brand new and
never-before-seen traditional 3-in-1 Instant Hot Tap branded ‘Polaris’: an industry first, being the only manufacturer to design and supply a traditional tap designed with instant hot tap technology! Creating added functionality in any classical kitchen space by dispensing hot, cold and up to 98°C steaming hot filtered water, Polaris eliminates the need for a separate filtered water source and dated kettle. Perrin & Rowe’s filtered water taps ensure the water flow is not cross-contaminated by the standard mains hot and cold water; this leaves untouched beneficial minerals such as fluoride, magnesium and calcium for the purest of water. Plus, with the new advanced Traditional Tap, filtered water can now be dispensed in an instant, steaming hot! The instant hot water flows through a

Passing through Perrin & Rowe’s premium nano-technology filter, the instant hot water is free from chlorine and other harmful metals and bacteria. Also acting as a lime inhibiter, the filter will additionally increase the tanks lifespan by preventing lime scale build-up: commonplace with most domestic kettles. From subtle classic looks, to distressed and rustic variations, LVT offers a diverse array of woods to suit individual styles and colour schemes. The collection includes exotic woods such as teak and rosewood as well as a selection of classic pine, ash and oak. The award-winning office refurbishment specialist selected Moduleo for the project as a result of its stylish finish and durability. “The Third Floor is based in an exclusive office project in London making style key,” explained Scott Fanning, managing director of Superior Interiors. “The client came to us with a very particular specification, in terms of aesthetics and quality, and Moduleo was the ideal solution. “The theme of the various rooms and spaces in The Third Floor offices dictated that we would need more than one type of flooring; some rooms contained exposed brick, while others had contrasting colour schemes. Moduleo’s Transform collection includes a variety of both wood-effect and stoneeffect finishes, and has been created to withstand heavy footfall, making it ideal for commercial environments. “We’re delighted with the overall finish of the flooring. It provides the niche offering of outstanding quality and value for money, and we would certainly specify Moduleo for future projects,” added Scott.
Listone Giordano (www.listonegiordano.com) have launched Biscuit, designed by Patricia Urquiola. The free composition of lines and shapes characterises the natural decorative vocation of wood floors whilst rediscovering the sinuous configuration of the material. Biscuit is the output of an in-depth analysis of the traditional parquet fitting systems thus interlacing the wood floor’s historical legacy with the contemporary style. The rounded edge modifies the usual linear shape of the board endowing it with a strong personality. The result is a wood flooring variety, each one relating to a different language but with a cutting-edge prospective. Inlay, mosaic, herringbone, brick pattern: whatever the pattern you choose, Biscuit looks like the flooring turns into a rich interwoven and overlapping fabric.
The fluid shape is finally highlighted by the curved line of the plank’s surface giving a sense of further softness to the natural material. Biscuit is the newest collection of Natural Genius, the Listone Giordano’s collection that consecrates parquet to the world of contemporary design and once again revolutionises the world of wooden floorings, thereby redefining the aesthetic rules of classic wooden boards and common laying patterns. It does so thanks to top international Italian design companies, with their genius and far-reaching approach. The Natural Genius project led to collections that reinterpret wood’s surface with an ultramodern touch and turn it into a furnishing element for floors, with a strong personality and an eco-friendly approach thanks to its certified raw materials.
24 : in.VOGUE Water-based finishing that features the anti-bacterial Crystalcare technology protects the wood whilst keeping the natural appearance and colour of an untreated surface. Kährs (www.kahrs.co.uk) wood flooring range has been voted ‘Hardwood Flooring Product of the Year’ by the flooring industry for the fifteenth year. The annual awards, which are jointly sponsored by the Contract Flooring Association and Contract Flooring Journal, celebrate ‘the best’ in the industry and include 17 categories. Award winners are voted for by readers of CFJ, who register in an independent ballot. Renowned for its design-led range, which combines quality, style and performance, Kährs offers over 140 different wood floors. Designs are presented throughout 25 collections and offered in nine different sustainable wood species and numerous patterns. Tactile surface treatments and ontrend coloured finishes, as well as traditional natural designs, provide myriad styles to suit all interiors.
The Transform collection by Moduleo
All floors have a multi-layered or ‘engineered’ construction, based on the original parquet design invented and patented by Kährs in 1941. As well as providing optimum stability, the method also uses resources in the most naturefriendly way. During installation, Kährs glueless Woodloc® joint promotes speed and accuracy, and eliminates gapping throughout the lifetime of the floor. New designs for 2016 include Kahrs Chevron and Domani Collections, with the vintage Gotaland Collection joining the range this Autumn/Winter.

The large lacquered GoModern bookshelf gives a stylish personal and homely touch
in.BRIEF : 27
Scandinavian Sophistication BIID Associate Nicola Holden has been passionate about interiors her whole life. After achieving a degree in Manufacturing Engineering and several years working in the manufacturing industry, Nicola decided to focus on her real love - interior design – and completed a course at Chelsea’s prestigious KLC School of Design. Thanks to her degree and previous career, she understands the importance of designing spaces to fit her clients’ needs. Owner and head designer at Nicola Holden Designs, Nicola creates bespoke contemporary interiors that closely reflect her client’s individual lifestyle. Her Zimbabwean roots and love of international travel also provide inspiration for her designs. Nicola’s personal and company design ethos is to ‘create a unique living space for you, inspired by artefacts, objects and memories that are important to you.’
T
he owner of this house in Long Ditton, Surrey wanted to breathe life into his characterless newbuild home. The design brief was to transform the middle floor spaces into something with a contemporary Scandinavian style, incorporating bright colours and playful elements. The middle floor of his home consists of an adult living room and the master bedroom. Given that both rooms are visible from the central stairwell, the client wanted the design to be cohesive in terms of colour and style. The starting point for the design was the existing dark wood floor that featured throughout. To balance the dark flooring
with its surroundings I layered a neutral palette of warm greys; Farrow & Ball’s Pavilion Gray on the walls, and a variety of textures to add interest to the scheme. The large lacquered GoModern bookshelf,
Nicola Holden
28 : in.BRIEF filled with the client’s favourite books, family photographs and possessions, gives the living room a stylish personal and homely touch. Continuing with texture, I incorporated a Tania Johnson rug to ground the seating area in the formal living room. The designer’s inspiration for this rug is light and reflection on water, instilling a calming ambience into the space. The chic, contemporary lines of the Living Divani sofa and armchair contrast with the more natural textures and shape of the sleek French Connection club chair. A mix of high street and designer side tables break up any uniformity in the design, with the gold finishes adding a touch of sophistication, and the concrete bringing in a playful element. The Lunar pendant from CTO Lighting is set in the corner of the room to allow the piece to stand out on its own as a sculptural element within the design, challenging any pre-conceived ideas that the pendant should hang above the coffee table. Finally, to incorporate the bright colours of the client’s Keith Haring artwork, I added splashes of vibrant colour in cushions, as well as the gorgeous GPJ Baker Botanical Garden curtains. The combination of appliqué and embroidery in the fabric creates an additional array of textures.
The Lunar pendant from CTO Lighting illuminates the room
The space within the living room allowed for the creation of a reading area in front of the GoModern bookshelves. The elegant simplicity of the Grasshopper reclining chair, the Flos floor lamp and the Carrara Bong table achieve this, bringing a sense of luxurious calm without distracting from the busy-ness of the shelves. The client’s

The bedroom design evolved around the owner’s bright patchwork quilt Danish Boyesen Monkey is the perfect Scandinavian accessory and adds another fun element to the scheme. In the bedroom, the design evolved around the bright patchwork quilt that the client owned. To maximise the impact of this piece I chose a beautifully textured fabric from Chase Erwin that gently plays with the light on the headboard and bed base. I layered the room with lacquered bedside cabinets from GoModern, and a monochrome embroidered Calvin Klein
fabric for the curtains. Again concrete makes an appearance in this room in the bedside pendants from Such and Such. The bed sits on an Angora shaggy rug which provides an exquisitely luxurious softness underfoot. The dressing table, like the bedside cabinets, is GoModern, however I chose a playful, hand-painted stool from Feather & Black to reflect the bright colours of the quilt. To finish the scheme I introduced Scandinavian elements through the minimalistic Lumi mirror above the dressing table and the leaner Georg mirror, both from Skandium.
It is really difficult to pick just one aspect of this design that is my favourite, as the focus of any interior design project is to create a complete solution where everything sits comfortably together. Having said this, I am really pleased with how the colours and patterns work together so well in the scheme. If I have to choose just one item as my favourite, it would probably be the Lunar pendant from CTO Lighting, with its aura of refined, luxurious modernity. One thing that made the design slightly challenging is that none of the rooms
in.BRIEF : 31 square, and some of the walls are slightly curved or off at an angle; this required a bit more thought to be put into furniture placements. However, a far greater challenge was incorporating the original new-build Legrand switches and sockets into the scheme, which the client wanted to retain.
One of the main reasons why the colours and patterns of Josef Frank and Marimekko resonate with me is because they remind me so much of the African wax prints that surrounded me during my childhood in Zimbabwe.
So there you have it – one of my recent projects, taking on a playful Scandinavianinfluenced interior. This finished scheme is one of sophistication and elegance that doesn’t take itself too seriously! www.nicolaholdendesigns.co.uk
Communicating with French company Legrand proved a bit of a challenge for my electrical contractor, but through a combination of resilience and persistence we got there in the end! Having married into a Swedish family I have been itching to create an interior that is heavily influenced by Scandinavian design and this was my chance. Furniture from the Nordic nations generally has a quiet, understated aesthetic. However, Scandi design is far more than this. With much of Scandinavia being dark for long hours during the winter, the design aesthetic is about adding glowing moments to the shadows. From this mix, you can then introduce the bright colours and bold patterns of Josef Frank’s designs from Svenskt Tenn and, of course, Marimekko.

New UKGBC Report Published Expert in sustainability in interior design and BIID affiliate Anna Whitehead has contributed on behalf of the BIID to the latest UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) Task Group report ‘Health and Wellbeing in Homes.’
P
ublished in July, the report is aimed at those with a role in developing, designing, delivering or managing housing, including interior designers. Using compelling evidence, the report calls for a concerted effort to focus and consider the mental, social and physical health and wellbeing of the people who occupy homes that are built and retrofitted.
“The BIID is committed to helping our members to drive sustainability and wellbeing in design, and welcomes this new report by the UKGBC,” explained Susie Rumbold, BIID President. “We are pleased to see that the report highlights the importance of addressing sustainability issues when approaching a design and build project and draws attention to the impact that design can have on the health and wellbeing of individuals. “It’s important that professionals in the design, construction and property industry understand the positive effects that good design can have on individuals and their wider communities, and can utilise this knowledge when designing their projects.” The ‘Health and Wellbeing in Homes’ report outlines how the home - both the location and the physical building - influences almost every aspect of our lives, from how well we sleep, to how often we see friends, to how safe and secure we feel. Some of the key findings and actions outlined in the document include: • Designers need to consider all three aspects of health and wellbeing – mental, social, and physical – equally • Many design features that enhance health and wellbeing also bring positive environmental benefits • Construction and property professionals have the ability to dramatically enhance the lives of the people they design and build for • It’s important to engage with designers early in the development process, to undertake assessments and analysis of opportunities to promote health and wellbeing for residents
