Welcome to the February issue of in.Design magazine!
simon Hamilton of simon Hamilton & Associates takes up the challenge of talking us though one of his recent projects in in.Brief, describing a lovely project in Covent garden, London, and Victoria stainow opens her diary to us for a very international Week in the Life, moving between France, London and Chicago.
in our Hotels & Hospitality focus, we look at Blacksheep’s gorgeous design of Boujis members club in Hong Kong, the Couture suite at st. Regis Rome, designed by The gallery at HBA London, and RPW Design’s work at the newly opened interContinental London Westminster.
We also feature lighting adding drama and creating mood, and Home Technology, where we look at the automation of security systems, lighting, heating, and entertainment.
February brings us Valentine’s Day – so let us know what you love most in this issue - you can email me or Tweet us @inDesignOnline. Here at the office we’re especially loving the chairs in emmeline’s on p26, the wood panel on p22 and the Christian Lacroix rug on p53!
if you’re working in a sector we’ve seem to have overlooked, please let me know, and we’ll see what we can do...
Have a great February!

In 2010, the Furniture Makers teamed up with Bucks New university to offer full bursaries to enable two students every year to complete an MA in Furniture design, and the two 2013 MA bursaries were presented at the Interiors show at the NEC in January.
“My parents work in mental health and my mum is a psychiatrist so the opportunity to work with relate appealed to me. It highlighted problems relate has experienced with ill-prepared rooms, which may not be suitable for providing comfort and reassurance in times of need. I am well aware of these issues for people undergoing counselling and thought I could develop furniture to help.” through his research, Emile established that being in a natural environment has proven benefits to health and wellbeing. “I am extremely pleased with the outcome of the project. Design Award For Jenny Blanc Jenny Blanc Interiors had a winning evening at the International Property Awards, when they were presented with the ‘World’s Best Interior Design Private Residence’ award!
J
enny Blanc and her design team were delighted when they were announced overall winners in their category, competing against stiff competition from design practices from Arabia, Asia Pacific, Canada, Caribbean, Central and south America, Europe and usA, at the grand
final of the International Property Awards at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel in december, and presented with the coveted award of World’s Best Interior design Private residence. the competing projects were judged by a
panel of top industry experts who declared the winning project to be ‘exceptional’. this ultimate accolade to the expertise and artistry of the Jenny Blanc practice follows successes in the regional award finals in October where they won Best Interior design Private residence for the East of England and then for the whole of the uK. “We are so proud to have been awarded World’s Best in this category,” said Jenny. “this was an outstanding project to work on as the owners placed themselves entirely in our hands to transform their wishes into reality. It is the first uK project we have submitted for the awards so it is doubly exciting and a great honour to be internationally recognized for our work and to have won this most prestigious prize.”
A winning team – Chrissie, sue, Jenny and Abbi
Jenny Blanc created the Michelin starred Le Manoir Aux Quat’saisons in Oxfordshire with her husband raymond Blanc which fired her lifelong passion for interiors, going on to open Jenny Blanc Interiors in 1996, an interior design practice with an adjoining luxury lifestyle showroom which offers some of the best international collections.

Bona Finishes Two Very Different Floors! The wood flooring specified at the new corporate HQ of publishing company Immediate Media makes a stunning visual statement!
F
or the calm breakout area, contractors Brighton-based Rightwoods installed Etloe’s mixed width Ash, an engineered floor made from Welsh timber with a birch ply back. The floor was hand engineered and finished by Etloe in the UK using Bona Create Ice stain and Bona Naturale. The objective was to create a flat, natural looking surface which wouldn’t detract from the soft yet distinctive Ash grain. At the opposite end of the building a rather noisier effect was created by using engineered oak finished with a Richard Woods screen-printed design on the floor, stairway and walls of the sunken media screening area. Bona’s Technical Manager, Alec Stacey, worked with Rightwoods to develop a specification to finish the surface comprising two coats of Bona Mega – normally used as a top coat but in this instance as a primer to provide the necessary build to level the screen-printed surface – and two coats of highly durable Bona Traffic HD.
The Bona finishes used in each area deliver the required combination of looks, durability, and ease of maintenance. Bona’s commercial maintenance products are to be used on an ongoing basis by the in-house team to clean and protect the surface and to extend the time required between recoating.

BIID Supports Surface Design Show The BIID is backing this year’s Surface Design Show at London’s Business Design Centre in February, with the Institute’s CPD Director Dan Hopwood confirmed to speak as part of the event’s talks programme on Wednesday 6th February
T
he Surface Design Show is the leading event for architects and interior designers to discover innovative surface solutions for the built environment. Dan’s talk ‘The Future of Design’ will be an unmissable session in the seminar programme for any discerning designer. Discussing collaboration, the designer’s role, client involvement, British craftsmanship and how products are sourced, Dan will provide important insights into the sector and where it is headed. “The Surface Design Show is an important event for designers, providing us with an opportunity to explore a range of materials and technologies that could improve our projects,” says Dan. “It is a great platform also for the Institute to engage with other designers and architects, and discuss relevant issues, such as craftsmanship and sourcing materials. I am very much looking forward to being involved in such a unique and inspirational show”.
The BIID is also an official CPD Partner for the Surface Design Show alongside RIBA. The CPD Hub will provide CPD seminars throughout the show, allowing attendees to help further their personal development by accruing CPD points and keeping them abreast of all the latest industry concerns. Launched in 2004, the Surface Design Show is the only UK show to focus solely on surface design and will showcase new cutting edge and inspiring materials. It attracts over 100 companies showcasing natural stone, wood, tiles, recyclable materials, metal, living materials, paint, illuminated surfaces and coatings that can be used as flooring, cladding, ceiling, wall coverings and more. For more information on the BIID’s participation at the show visit www. surfacedesignshow.com or www.biid.org. uk or follow us @BIIDtalk for updates.

A Week In The Life Of Victoria Stainow Victoria Stainow designs a stunning collection of furniture and lighting which is hand-crafted by French artisans, and also offers a bespoke sourcing service for furniture, antiques, decorative objects, lighting and art. Taking time out from travelling between her base in London and Provence, Victoria tells us about her week Sunday I like to travel on Sundays; it’s such a good day to catch up on correspondence and admin, and to think through and crystallize ideas for future projects – and there’s no better place to do it than on the Eurostar, which I take regularly between London and Avignon. This trip starts off from a cold, wet and miserable London so the train seems particularly warm and inviting. I often stop for lunch at ‘The Terminus’, a good traditional Parisian brasserie just opposite the Gare du Nord. It is so handy and they do a great seafood platter. Monday A meeting with my primary artisan in Provence; he is a highly trained furniture maker and works expertly in solid wood and veneer and now brass and Corian as well. He loves to experiment with new materials and today we discuss the possibility of doing some new models using some very exotic and interesting veneers. The choices are endless and if I had my way, I would do them all! We have a catch up on progress
of existing orders, lament the price of brass, and admire his latest creation, the Étagère Laquée. Tuesday Today I go to the workshop of the ironworking team. The head of the team is an extraordinary polymath; he can put his mind to almost anything. His latest invention is a new type of wind turbine but he is equally gifted at the finer points of furniture aesthetics. Today we are discussing the final touches to an iron console table which is based on a French design from the 1960s. We are trying to get the patina on the legs and top just right and I think we are almost there… we will do one version with a fauxmarble top made of iron and another with a wood top made of burr. We join friends for dinner in Arles, a city which is recreating itself in a very artistic way, with a new photography museum designed by Frank Gehry planned for the very near future.

Wednesday Back to London to meet with my guru Polly Williams to discuss our six-month plan. Having launched my business eight months earlier, we agree that progress has been made but that we need to keep up the momentum! Now that the core of the collection has been built, along with the website, the challenge is to reach our clientele. I’m convinced that once people see the pieces in the flesh they will appreciate the beauty of the craftsmanship. To me, there is nothing more appealing than

“…there is nothing more appealing than a beautifully made object…” a beautifully made object; I hope that my pieces are appreciated not only in a practical sense but also as pieces of art. Our open day next week is the real debut for the collection. Thursday I meet with Florence Deniel, of Exportwise Consulting, who assists, among others, a group of French furniture makers. She, like me, is passionate about supporting our European craftsmen and in her case she provides practical export development advice and support to those who wish to export but are daunted by the challenges involved. She helps small craftsmen maximise opportunities available through French government incentive schemes to promote worldwide the best of French traditions and skills. Meanwhile, here in the UK, Melanie CableAlexander, founder of the slow furniture movement, is hoping to influence the UK government to make provisions for UK craftsmen. She has discovered a range of talented craftsmen throughout Britain who are represented commercially through her business, Lapaloosa.

18 : in.HER LIFE Friday A meeting with April Russell, a leading London interior designer, with whom I have worked before and very much admire. Her latest project is an apartment in New York city which promises to be very chic, with clean, elegant lines, beautiful materials and interesting artwork. She wants to use some of the furniture and lighting from my collection and for me, this is one of my favourite aspects of my business! It’s great fun to work the individual pieces into her plans for the apartment. A useful aspect of the collection is that most of the pieces can be made larger or smaller; we sometimes even invent a new piece based on the needs of the client. In this case, the Bibliotheque Laquee will be used in the sitting room to display a collection of Chinese ornaments. The glass and brass console will be in the entrance hall with the Lampe Haute (or maybe a pair?). And we may use the Bout de Canapés as bedside tables in the guest bedroom suite… The sun is coming out so I take a quick walk in Kensington Gardens, making my usual stop at the Serpentine Gallery, and then have dinner with friends to end the day. Saturday Prepare and pack for my flight to Chicago later today. I am meeting with a group of interior designers to introduce my collection and also hope to get some feedback on the American market. I love the idea of selling the collection in Chicago; not only is it my former hometown but I think of it, with its exceptional architectural history, as a hub of modernism in the USA, a perfect setting for my pieces.

Get away! We look at the interior decor of luxurious hotels in Hong Kong, Rome and London because yes, you’re worth it!

Bouji’s VIP area: Blacksheep
E
xporting the British design style overseas to Hong Kong, Blacksheep have designed Boujis members club, bringing a modern interpretation of traditional British style and heritage to the eastern metropolis. opened in october 2012, the distinguished Boujis members club is set within the Soho district and encapsulates the British design aesthetic, implementing georgian inspired decoration and traditional furniture. The wooden library style club reception area is encased with decorative timber wall panels, which are complemented by soft lighting.
Blacksheep’s bespoke wall covering of wooden lettering
Blacksheep designed a bespoke wall covering made from wooden cut out graphic lettering of different sizes fused together, creating a mix of alphabet symbols; stained deep blue timber panelling on the walls and ceiling lead into the lounge and bar area.
The georgian pattern featured ceiling further implements the British heritage, with inset LeD lighting dispersing a neon glow. The graphic design of a union Jack subtly glows out from a gold smoked mirror set within the bar; the backdrop of the bar also displays a variety of indulgent ingredients used to create Boujis’ famous cocktails. Deep luxurious turquoise banquette seating lines the edges of the room, with a VIP area set off the end of the bar with intimate curved seating and an additional lounge space. The club, leading off the lounge, is a spacious area that mixes high tech AV and large bespoke HD video screens on the ceiling and walls enabling a different experience for members every evening. “The mix of local tradition, philosophy, manufacture, and luxury has always fascinated me,” said Blacksheep’s Ceo,
24 : in.Vogue
Tim Mutton, “and the bright lights of Hong Kong and the energy that it emulates is aspirational for any designer in hospitality. exporting the famous Boujis nightclub from London to Hong Kong has been an exciting project with various challenges and a key part was complementing its new location whilst injecting the British aesthetic and charm.” In Rome, fashion takes centre stage in a new hotel suite. Designed by The gallery at HBA London, the Couture Suite at St. Regis Rome offers an escape into the glamorous world of Italian flair and high-end fashion, combined with timeless St. Regis elegance. “In celebrating the style and vibrancy of the great Italian couturiers, we have created a very special suite that uniquely belongs in its location,” says Inge Moore, Principal of HBA London and The gallery. “The new interiors tell a story of fashion which is timeless in its grace and quality of detail.” The expansive 150m² Couture Suite is situated on the second floor; featuring a high ceiling, neutral linen-textured walls form the backdrop for its exquisitely luxurious materials and intricate embellishments, such as the nail-head trim on the timber panelling and millwork, the softest Italian leathers and finely stitched embroidery. A grand antiqued mirror above the original marble fireplace reflects the light from the cascading glass rods of the shimmering chandelier. In a clever twist, a television rests on an easel, thus adding to the space’s comfortable yet refined artistic elegance rather than becoming a dominant focal point.

emmeline’s, by RPW Design The three sumptuous bedrooms in the Couture Suite evoke taste and confidence. Adorning the corner room is a dressmaker’s form whose sculptural curves reflect the supple sensuality of the cerulean blue chaise longue, the circular ‘scribbles’ of the wool rug and the fashion design studies gracing the wall. A photograph of red smoke chosen for its allusion to the sinuous red voiles used in dressmaking hangs above the bed. In the other bedrooms, variations of this photograph are used, as well as a chaise longue upholstered in mustard-toned velvet for the second space and in a raspberry
hue for the third. These two bedrooms also include elegant oval-shaped desks inspired by a Roman design classic, a table which has an elliptical cut-out within its top. In The gallery’s new version, this cut-out has been replaced by a hand-stitched leather inset resting above a pencil drawer. Whilst a guest at the hotel may find that one element of the suite stands out, what does the designer think? “It’s very difficult to identify one element of the Couture Suite as my personal
RPW Design’s Blue Boar Bar & Restaurant
28 : in.Vogue favourite because it’s about how so many elements to do with the hotel’s touchstones of fashion, art and literature work together to create a unique and intriguing experience,” said Inge. “But, since I must choose, I think it is the influence of Valentino. I love his beautiful creations – their timeless grace, his emphasis upon flowing shapes and his meticulous attention to detail – and we discovered that Valentino used to unveil his collections in the hotel’s ballroom!
So, it became central to our concept that we wove the essence of his designs into the suite design. An example of this can be seen in the photograph of red smoke that hangs above the bed in each of the bedrooms.” Back in the uK, RPW Design has completed their work at the newly opened InterContinental London Westminster, transforming Queen Anne’s Chambers, a former government building, now home to
256 beautifully designed rooms including 44 luxury suites and an imposing penthouse. Welcoming and very english public areas at ground floor level have been designed to capture the traditions of the hotel’s illustrious neighbours in Westminster. The reception marble and mosaic floor has detail references to the floor at Westminster Abbey, and motifs from St James’s Park are also used to reference the design. The

30 : in.Vogue theme of the hotel’s signature artwork relates to various aspects of British political life in subtle and satirical ways. The hotel’s public rooms are set to become the new destination for members of the ‘Westminster Village’. In the Blue Boar Bar and Restaurant, which has its street entrance in adjacent Tothill Street, RPW Design has created a series of public areas that feel intimate and private; both areas operate as stand-alone elements in the development. With its soft light palette, the Tea Lounge and emmeline’s, named for the political activist and founder of the suffragette movement emmeline Pankhurst, generates a lighter, more feminine mood. Colour accents in the Tea Lounge’s soft furnishings include fuchsia and lime, reinforcing the separate character of this area. The design of the guest bedrooms was inspired by the look and feel of a luxury contemporary residential apartment. A bright and warm palette of off-white with yellow highlights lightens and invigorates spaces. Wood panelling has been used extensively, but this too is in a blond colour. A key feature of the guest room artwork is the contemporary Westminster streetscapes that were especially commissioned for the hotel. Jan Wilson, owner and managing director of RPW, is proud of their achievements. “one of the most unconventional spaces within the hotel is the Blue Boar Bar,” she said. “We designed it to feel like a bar which would also appeal to non-guests, as opposed to the average hotel bar. The separate street entrance and variety of spaces, some more intimate than others, provide a multipurpose place to meet.”

anufactured by Losan, ‘Allure’ is a range of ontrend decorative products which, as well as an extensive palette of bold and vibrant colours, smoked and stained veneers and a mirror laminate, includes a stunning and contemporary real stone laminate which is a truly unique addition to the range. Allure will be distributed exclusively in the UK by James Latham. Also new for 2013 is ‘Nevamar’, a High Pressure Laminate (HPL) which boasts a unique armoured protection (ARP) technology, meaning it can stand up to more abuse than similar products. The result is a decorative product that will look newer for longer. The Latham’s stand (at 108, 110 and 112) will also feature its highly popular solid surface material, HI-MACS®, which can

be thermoformed to almost any 3D shape and allows for perfectly imperceptible joints, so even large-area installations have the appearance of one seamless application. Also on show will be the high quality, solid-wood laminated panel, Texwood, plus Synergii from Wilsonart, a premium HPL worktop. HIF (Holz in Form) Finesse, a revolution in conventional timber veneer paneling which gives dimension, depth and texture to an otherwise flat surface and offers eleven embossed MDF panels – each supplied with its own unique textured finish – will also be on show. Through 10 strategically based depots, James Latham has nationwide coverage across the UK and Ireland and is able to offer all of these products for prompt collection or delivery within 24-72 hours, depending on location.

ecorative lighting trends, much like fashion, can change with each season. ulysse Dormoy, Managing Director of Atrium, is currently experiencing a resurgence in monochrome and geometric styles, as seen with the launch of Tatou by Patricia urquiola for Flos. “This versatile lamp is perfect for both residential and commercial interiors, marrying a delicate aesthetic with a good quality lamp,” said ulysse.
Pagazzi’s Lyndsay Pendant
“We have seen a continued trend in statement lighting at home with consumers and designers looking to invest in dramatic or interesting show pieces to add the wow factor. It’s now common to see this ethos replicated in retail and hospitality spaces with chandeliers and pendant lighting used
in entrance spaces or key rooms to help create a certain look or feel.” Many of Atrium’s clients have been looking for products that have more sustainable energy efficient light sources which still deliver the quality of ambience that we have come to expect from tungsten filament light sources. “With this in mind Flos have gone to great lengths to update classics such as the Arco and the Taccia to take the latest LeD light sources, whilst maintaining their original lit aesthetic,” said ulysse. “The most recent additions to the Flos decorative collection have been developed with LeDs as the primary light source.” For 2013 ulysse is predicting announcements on new materials. “We’ve seen the rise of LeDs and better lighting
36 : in.Vogue technology but an area that has not been explored fully is the materiality of the body and fittings for luminaires and decorative lighting,” claimed ulysse. “With this in mind Flos are set to launch a new line of biodegradable lamps in collaboration with Bio-on. Together they will create the world’s first product made with PHAs, the 100% naturally water-biodegradable bioplastic. The announcement of the Miss Sissi Bio-on heralds a new chapter in lighting design and will surely see other brands follow suit.” “We are seeing a resurgence in the popularity of traditional materials such as crystal and onyx but used in new ways,” said Jeremy Quantrill, joint managing director of Dernier & Hamlyn. “An example of this is in a recent luxury hotel project where we have encased crystal usually used for dressing chandeliers in two layers of

Jeremy pointed out that high end designers are also being more creative in the way they use lighting beyond its practical purpose as decorative art installations in luxury residential and hospitality commissions.
“even at the top of the market designers and their clients are careful about getting value from their lighting and using it for dual purposes in this way,” he said, “and we are fortunate that our craftsmen’s skills are

For 2013 think burnt orange, terracotta and brights (Pagazzi) such that we can respond to changing requirements.” Artemide creates innovative designs and trendsetting products from the early 1960s. Their vision, ‘The Human Light’, focuses both on the individual well-being and environmental sustainability. As ernesto gismondi, Artemide’s founder and president, explained, “The world is facing three major challenges: fairness, stability, and sustainability. With this scenario in place, a company like our own conceives light based on universal values, and its design of light is respectful of man’s rights and duties towards himself and the planet. Long life, conscious consumption, eco-efficiency, and ‘more with less’ are the foundations for good design improving the quality of life.” As a result of this vision, Artemide have launched low-energy versions of a wide majority of its bestsellers and new products. Iconic products like Tolomeo and Tizio and new items like their IN_eI Issey Miyake range are available in LeD.
“Clients are becoming more and more conscious of environmental efficiency and sustainability,” noted ernesto. “A recent example is the creation of the LeeD-gold certified gae Aulenti Square in Milan designed by Argentinian architect Cesar Pelli in cooperation with the Italian studio Land.” Artemide contributed to this important project by donating the Solar Tree, an innovative outdoor light fitting that combines solar photovoltaic and LeD technologies.
“Being seen to be energy efficient is key,” agreed Sally Storey, Design Director of John Cullen, “but in the same breath lighting is so important to add glamour to any interior or exterior. Current developments in technology mean layering light is easy to achieve. This can be done using little energy; whether uplighting door shutters with a 1w Lucca or using an LeD Contour strip to back or front light a shelving unit. Contour can be used to create a floating effect under a bathroom unit. Built-in LeDs that are concealed,
42 : in.Vogue rather than downlights alone, can be used to create different effects and can make all the difference.” As for what’s coming in 2013, “I see LeDs improving their colour rendition and dimming of LeDs becoming easier and easier,” said Sarah. “We have seen a growing trend in glitzy, glamorous lighting such as the glitz Pendant and the Chelsea Floor Lamp,” claimed Laura Pagan, Co-Founder and Buying Director of Pagazzi Lighting Ltd. “over the past year, it has been hard not to notice the considerable increase in sales of this style of light. our latest bestseller is the Lyndsay Pendant which has flown off the shelves!” Like other manufacturers, Pagazzi have noticed that LeD lighting is becoming increasingly popular for both home and business interiors. “LeD fittings are more expensive than ordinary fittings but for good reason,” said Laura. “The bulbs are designed to last the life of the fitting – which can be up to 25 years!” LeD lights also save up to 90% on energy. LeD light fittings have come a long way and are now widely available in many different styles and wattages. And Laura’s opinion on trends for 2013? “The colour orange is going to be huge in home interiors!” she forecasted. “Think burnt orange, terracotta or even bright for the bold hearted!”

Lights, curtains, action! Home technology covers a wide sector including security systems, lighting and heating controls, and entertainment; and this can even be controlled remotely, so your home is ready for you whenever you get back!
Konnectiv: Private home cinema is becoming increasingly popular

ome Technology falls into two separate sections; control systems and entertainment systems. The Custom electronic Design and Installation Association (CeDIA) is the international trade organisation for the home electronic systems industry, its members specialising in everything connected with electronic systems for the ‘smart’ home. Kris Hogg is Managing Director at Konnectiv, and a board member of CeDIA. “In terms of control systems we are going to see a greater need to integrate the things that make a difference to interiors,” he explained. “Scene dimmable lighting is going to become almost essential to new build homes as buyers are starting to look for this in a home, but linking the system to control curtains or blinds, to give greater ease of use, is going to become more in demand.”
Linking heating and security systems is also going to become more essential and energy saving technology will become a key part of home technology, especially as this can be linked to the alarm system and give an ‘all off’ and intelligent control of every device in the house. “You are going to see a move away from multiple switches to an integrated all in one touch screen, and then an iPad or tablet being used as the main controller for the house,” he forecasted, “Whatever you do though, run a data network in a house wherever you can and make sure you get a quality grade WiFi system installed. Internet access is going to be incredibly critical in future!” With regards to entertainment, larger TV screens are going to be popular, especially with the advent of ultra-high definition TV and the inherent lack of quality
New surround bar systems hit the market last year (Konnectiv)

Lida Cucina find clients demand the highest quality living environment audio from a flat screen TV. “This will mean your clients are going to be looking for either a good surround sound system or at least one of the new surround bar systems, which hit the market last year,” Kris continued. “With surround sound look for a well-designed system and a good cinema amp and speakers, rather than an all-in-one ‘home theatre’ system.” The other thing Kris considers you are likely to be asked for is a private home cinema. “This is becoming an increasingly askedfor feature and can make great use of a basement or attic room and we’ve even been converting garages! You can use either a projector and screen or a large TV to
great effect.” “Music throughout the house is going to be key,” he added, “and there is a shift away from the cheaper ‘entry type’ Sonos systems to a better quality and richer featured system such as the Linn network system, these use data networks and allow for music to be streamed from your phone or PC as well as to access music from the internet.” The uK is fast following on the heels of the uSA with the trend for Home Control systems becoming essential in houses of a certain size. “With the rapid advancement of integrated
technological systems, clients are now demanding the highest quality living environment, with systems for controlling sound, vision, lighting, climate and security available at the touch of a button,” said Ian Biles of Lida Cucina. “We are particularly noticing increasing numbers of architects and designers specifying as standard, media rooms with home cinemas to create the ultimate viewing experience. “Projection systems, plasma and LCD screens, sound and visual equipment can now be integrated throughout the home and operated remotely by smart phones and tablets. Wandsworth’s recently launched Jung Smart Room Controller such as Savant are already planning for the future by designing systems that can accommodate further upgrades and enhancements.” Many agree that the popularity of portable devices is a big influence on interiors, driving the trends for compact design and end-user convenience. “Most people store their music on hand held devices and use a desk top docking station to play it through,” claimed James Woodfield, marketing manager of the Wandsworth group. “But technology is advancing all the time; familiarity with
Smarthome technology makes 1.Zero.4 an eco-friendly house (Helvar) touch screen and android devices is also influencing design of other types of home technology as manufacturers tap in to the intuitive nature of the ubiquitous hand held device to help provide an easier user interface with more complex technologies.” Wandsworth has recently launched the Jung Smart Room Controller, a wall mounted

31 Helvar multi-sensors span this substantial property to operate technology in a way that’s comfortable for them and secondly because it leverages iconic, contemporary design.” Home technology can now influence all aspects of home design, as previously impossible dreams can now be incorporated into the plans. Architects at Larock Home have recently designed 1.Zero.4 – an ambitious family home in Harrogate. Its automated infrastructure was conceived, designed and installed by specialist integrators Konnectiv Technology, and features a range of Helvar lighting products and sensors that work
towards significant savings in energy consumption. At the hub of 1.Zero.4’s network of smarthome technology is an AMX central controller which links with Helvar’s Imagine lighting router. From the router, control protocols are fed to the entire network of Helvar multi-sensors and keypads and also to the AMX kit, bringing the component parts of the system on to one network for increased efficiency and cohesion. “We were trying to make 1.Zero.4 the most eco-friendly house of its type, combining elements of smarthome technology with
green solutions such as the solar panels and rain harvesting,” says Kris Hogg, Konnectiv Technology’s Managing Director. “Bringing the environmental controls – the heating, cooling, lighting and blinds – on to the same system made perfect sense, as we knew that having all these aspects working together would render greater energy savings.” As energy efficiency and LeD technologies become more accessible to the residential market, does this project hint at what the future holds, for not just the modern smarthome but maybe all homes?

A World Apart Simon Hamilton of Simon Hamilton & Associates (and International Director of the BIID) tells us how email and Skype allowed him to liaise with a client in Australia over a project in London
W
hen starting a project the Design Brief is the most important stage as it creates the identity and defines what you and the client are trying to achieve. With my private residential client in Sydney, Australia and the property in London, this project began as a truly international one! regular communication was the key to developing a clear concept.
My barrister client had purchased one of several apartments in a red brick Covent Garden building which had been ripe for development for years. With high ceilings and large sash windows there was always going to be scope to play with scale and light. As the building was being fitted out by developers who had been on site for several months already, we were at the mercy of their timetable. With a number of delays, we had the final handover in february 2012,

Orange adds a touch of brightness some three months later than planned. in the meantime, we got on board with looking at the palette we would inherit from the basic fit out which each apartment had. Limed oak floors, black gloss painted doors surrounded by matt white architraves, and mushroom coloured glossy lacquered kitchen doors provided a very neutral backdrop. We paid particular attention to the colours of the fixtures as there was a great opportunity to be creative and provide some fun and dramatic contrasts. With such a neutral base, we were able to introduce bright tones as a contrast.
Our client’s intention was to provide a convenient, well equipped and comfortable living space for herself but ultimately to provide an apartment for rental. To realise this concept, we had to look at the spaces working seamlessly together. Once we had produced a selection of options for our client, we sent her full colour and mood board presentations by email with examples of furniture and fittings. We naturally took note of the budget and timescale we had, so we always ensured we presented a variety of realistic options. We arranged a series of calls via Skype, taking into account time-zones and

56 : in.Brief working hours. Using such technology has become commonplace and meant we could relax about how long we were speaking. We talked at length and in detail through the ideas and discussed which colours, finishes and items were preferred to reach the next stage. The design development was crucial to refine the options into a workable scheme. By taking a few elements from one and transplanting them into another, we were able to devise a final scheme which brought together the best aspects of all the ideas. A few specific criteria helped form the brief. These included a sofa bed in the living area for guests to stay, a large flat screen TV with surround sound and a DVD player to take advantage of all TV channels available through the building’s shared cabling and satellite system. We were also asked to provide the items necessary to make the space a useable apartment, such as cutlery, plates, a toaster, glasses, towels, pillows and duvets, etc. The dark wood side tables in the living area from the Conran Shop were an impulse purchase. They proved both practical as well as decorative, serving as a place for drinks or a book or even the surround sound speakers. Sometimes, it is chance finds like this which can make a space work well. The Christian Lacroix designed rug by Designers Guild in the living area was an excellent starting point with its vibrant orange, purple, black, white and yellow. To complement this boldness, we added a sofabed from Sofa. com with purple blue cotton velvet and silk cushions from Habitat which were a last minute but vital finishing touch. Using cues from the architecture and the given features, we were able to build

58 : in.Brief up a more personal interpretation of the space to suit our client’s needs. The bedroom had a built-in wardrobe with a pair of mirrored sliding doors overclad with metal panels cut into a distinctive pattern. This distorted one’s reflection but bounced light around the room, so we decided that we should introduce another complimentary graphic pattern as a softener to the metal. The curtain fabric from romo was an interwoven graphic pattern of reflective metallic and matt textures which gave the curtains a more three-dimensional look.

Coupled with a smoky coloured plain sheer from Lelievre the window treatment was completed. To add a touch of brightness in tune with the colours in the living area, we added side lights with bright orange lampshades sitting on dark glossy aubergine coloured bedside units. The custom-made padded headboard was provided to add height as the original four-poster bed idea had to be dropped due to the low ceiling and size of the room. it provides a natural backrest as well as giving the practical but plain divan storage bed more presence.

60 : in.Brief Procuring the best quality items for the project including all the tableware, bed linen and accessories within the limited budget and tight timescale was a demanding challenge, but we successfully managed to complete the project for the february handover. The client first saw the completed scheme whilst i was on business in india, so i was unable to see her initial reaction first hand. However my colleagues told me how impressed and pleased she was with the reality which had been, until then, just a concept. fortunately, we were able to catch up soon after my return. in my client’s own words “...everything ran very smoothly...” and such was her joy in the outcome that she has offered me another apartment project in her home city of Sydney for 2013. BIID Supports “Bacc For The Future” Campaign The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced its support of the ‘Bacc for the Future’ Campaign
T
his high profile campaign has been launched in response to the new proposed English Baccalaureate (EBacc) qualification, which leaves out the study of creative subjects such as Art, Music, Design and Technology, and Dance and Drama. The BIID supports the campaign’s call to include creative subjects as a sixth pillar within the EBacc, as suggested by Darren Henley in his Review of Cultural Education in England. The Government’s consultation on the EBacc has now closed, but whilst a response is being formulated the Institute is aiming to put pressure on the Government not to exclude creative subjects. “It would be a travesty if the EBacc did not include a sixth pillar for creative education,” says Sue Timney, BIID President. “English interior designers past and present are celebrated globally for their talent and
creativity and our members work on design projects all over the world. I speak from personal experience, when I say that many of these successful designers would never have discovered or developed these skills had it not been for the extensive creative education they received at the crucial pre-16 level.” She adds, “Early study in the arts will have inspired some of our greatest artists, musicians, designers and dancers. By taking it away we are sure to jeopardise the future of our creative talents. The creative industries also employ millions and contribute heavily to the UK’s economy. It is not only individuals that will suffer, but our economy too.” Alongside the BIID, key creative industry figureheads are supporting the campaign. These include Tate Director Nicholas Serota, UK Music CEO Jo Dipple, Film and Theatre
Sue Timney, BIID President Director Sir Richard Eyre, and Arlene Phillips OBE. Even actor Jude Law spoke out about the subject recently, accusing the government of ‘cultural vandalism’ whilst presenting an award at the Turner Prize 2012 ceremony.
