Hotelympia Returns! Hotelympia returns this year, from 29th February to 3rd March, at ExCeL, with the UK’s greatest hospitality event promising more product innovation than ever before, fed by laser guided trends and insight drawn from the UK’s leaders in design and front-runners of the culinary capital
T
he biennial four-day show, the home of hospitality innovation, will be catered for by almost 1,000 of some of the world’s most pioneering exhibitors in Interiors & Tableware, Food & Drink, Catering Equipment, Technology, Careers, and sustainability-focused Waste-Works. “It may seem a contradiction in terms to describe an event on the sheer scale of Hotelympia as having the feel of a bespoke, tailored show, but in 2016, that’s exactly the experience we will deliver,” said Toby Wand, Managing Director at Fresh Montgomery. “How do we achieve this with so many
ground-breaking exhibitors, from multiple sectors, all under one roof? The answer lies in knowing the market, understanding the trends that keep this vibrant industry ticking, showcasing companies that share in this vision, true innovators, keeping things fresh and, most importantly, relevant to you. “So, whichever day you choose to spend with us, and whatever attraction, innovative new product, key exhibitor or insightful speaker is on your hit list, this experience will be individually tailored to you, the requirements of your business and your customers. Your show.”
Philips’ Luminous Patterns (stand 2121) Hotelympia’s Stage will have the London halls ringing yet again with the sounds of lively discussion, heady debate and inspirational ideas as a host of leading industry lights offer insight-packed presentations, giving show visitors the practical advice and know-how to take back to their own operations, a key part of Hotelympia’s ‘Your Show’ remit. Internationally renowned designer and Past President of the British Institute of Interior Design, Lori Pinkerton-Rolet, kicks off Hotelympia’s design talks with a panel discussion on Monday (1pm), offering advice on how to profit from design: the colour,

A Week In The Life Of Rory Macpherson Founded by entrepreneur Rory Macpherson, Play Associates works across design platforms and disciplines, collaborating with leading architects, planners and product designers, making warm, memorable and intelligent spaces in which to live, work and play. Rory opens his diary to in.Design readers... Monday I tend to get into the office at 7:30am before the rest of the team arrive, so I have some time to catch up on emails. When the team arrives, we catch up on each other’s weekend, then we talk about our projects and workloads and what we have to do today, this week etc.
Rory Macpherson
I have just had a new commercial project enquiry for a health café, and am talking to the founders this morning about designing a space for them with natural materials and lots of greenery – not dissimilar to the Playfair offices in Farringdon that we completed last summer. I have always been interested in approaching projects from a more environmental, less short-term perspective, so it is particularly exciting for me, for a client to come along and ask about all natural materials. No plastics must be used at all and the client is interested in the longevity of the design. I am sure this approach is going to be more prevalent in the not too distant future. Material transparency and a desire for ‘honest’ material seem to be on our client’s radar. We’ve also noticed with office design an awareness of the building’s users’ wellbeing, whether it be standing desks, light filters on screens or clean air circulation. A recent Skanska report found over 50% of

An eclectic family home in Primrose Hill a company’s costs can go on employees, so creating a happy environment that encourages productivity makes sense. The 6m long table we installed at the Playfair offices was taken from a castle in Scotland as it was being thrown out! Our joiner heard about it and told us and we knew it would look perfect for the Playfair offices – even if it did mean taking out a window and craning it in to the fifth floor. Tuesday Back to visit a beautifully grand detached Georgian house in Primrose Hill, five stories high and over 5000 sq. ft. My clients are a
leading oncologist, and his wife, who is a lawyer. I had designed their last house, also in Primrose Hill, so it was great to be asked to return and refurbish their new larger family home. It’s a beautiful house and fun to work with such large proportions. The design had to be child and cat friendly, so we had to use really tough commercial fabrics on certain pieces of furniture. We loved the challenge in sourcing such materials. We also love sourcing new British lighting designs and found some great midcentury feature chandeliers and two original 70’s lamps which apparently inspired Tom Dixon. Bert Frank is one of our favourite
UK lighting designers at the moment. The biggest challenge for me with this project is the client has a lot of large powerful emotional art works which we have to work the design around, including a 3m x 2m piece from a Norwegian artist which is hung, taking pride of place, in the sitting room. We seem to have had a string of projects like the mews house (pictured) and the Wardour St commercial project we are just finishing, where our scheme, and to an extent the architecture of the house, was built around the clients’ impressive and prized art work collection.

16 : in.HIS LIFE Wednesday We have been exploring sensory therapy and working on a mobile ‘sensory’ pod. Sensory spaces are alternative therapy methods, which through light, sound, smell and touch evoke both stimulation and relaxation within patients who otherwise struggle with conventional sense response. The idea of a pod originated after a visit to a care home last year whilst visiting my grandfather. We had been asked to create a
sensory environment within the home for a patient who had become quadriplegic after a cycling accident. The problem we found with this care home, and have subsequently found with other care homes, is that they don’t have the space or funds to allocate to a permanent sensory area. My aim is to change this and to make an affordable transportable sensory pod without the need for a permanent space, for all the care homes in the UK. We
recently had a full-size prototype made, which was great to interact with, but the design was inflatable and the fan noise was too loud. We’re now revisiting the design and hope to have a second improved prototype made in the next few months. In the afternoon I pop over to a two bedroom mansion flat in Maida Vale which is making good progress and with second fix just about finished. The flat has a noise transfer issue due the fact that we

have put new wood flooring down. We had acoustic tests which guaranteed, scientifically, that we can improve the current noise transfer from what is there at the moment (carpet) by installing a sub floor, but the managing agent isn’t convinced. The Lease stipulation says no wood but we can prove it would be better than carpet, but convincing the managing agent is another matter. We feel it looks better too and the client wants it now as well! As soon as this matter is settled we just have to wait for the furniture, which we are shipping from Australia. Even though the Australian clients have seen everything we
could possibly show them in London they love this Australian maker and supplier so much that despite a 20 week leadtime, as well as pretty high shipping costs, they are insistent that the majority of seating, tables and accessories come from the other side of the world. Thursday We currently have three internal development projects in Kensington as part of Play Property. They are all within a few minutes of each other and just off Kensington Church Street. They are at different stages with one just starting and one about to come to market. I have site meetings in all three all day so I run through
the schedule with each team. Although they are close to each other we have approached each one differently, so they all have their own style to appeal to different markets and audiences. Where possible with our internal projects, we like to try out new ideas which end user clients may or may not go for, but I like to see what people do like and don’t like. Some elements are easily changed. In this instance one of the three projects has a ‘wellness’ approach with air and water filters, and light moods which can change throughout the day to follow the bodies natural light patterns. We’re very interested in bringing these ideas into more of our projects. There is a company in

Friday I have a meeting first thing with a planning official from RBKC, on behalf of a client in Notting Hill looking to extend a roof terrace. Luckily he likes our scheme and it goes well. I’m always surprised about the lottery of planning officer allocation and how one can approve a scheme which another wouldn’t – given that potential values of planning gains can in some cases be in the millions! I then head to our joiner’s workshop in Park Royal to run through upcoming projects. I love going to these workshops with the noise, smell of wood and bustle of seeing things in production. We’ve become a little obsessed with handles and hardware recently and it’s great to see what’s been happening. Just before 4pm I head back to the office to catch up on emails and phone calls for a couple of hours, before calling it a day and a week and join my friends for a drink nearby.

Sometimes you don’t want partitioning to visually restrict a scheme – and with new innovations in architectural glass, walls are becoming a bit more transparent!
T
he Rhodes Building at oriel College oxford has recently undergone a complete refurbishment and conversion into student accommodation and lecture rooms.
The long passageway from oxford High Street to the internal quadrangle was subdivided into three separate break-out areas by frameless glass screens from Daedalian glass Studios. The challenge on the project was to achieve very tight tolerances to the stone vaulted ceilings. Daedalian carried out a laser scan of the passageway, and converted the data into linear shapes at the exact position of the screens. As you can imagine in a 105 year old building the resulting glass shapes were anything but regular! The two internal screens incorporated sliding glass doors, and the external screen to the quadrangle had a pivot door on concealed underfloor springs. All of the metal fittings were powder coated to create a bronze RAL colour. DoRMA uK have recently launched HSW eASY Safe, the latest addition to its horizontal sliding wall and glass partition range.

Selectaglaze, For Peaceful Nights Located in a lively part of London, Ham Yard Hotel is newly-built on a plot that had been unoccupied for a number of years. Although new double glazed windows were installed throughout, the corner of the hotel on Great Windmill Street still suffered high external noise levels.
T
he introduction of secondary glazing is one of the most effective solutions for combating outside noise – a reduction of 45dB is achievable when there is a gap of at least 100mm.
A total of 37 openings were treated with Selectaglaze secondary glazing, finished in a dark grey colour to match the existing primary windows, making them as discreet as possible. Acoustic laminated glass was used, which absorbs the outside noise levels. And as testament to the detailed planning throughout the design and build phases, the hotel gained a BREEAM Excellent rating. A comfortable, quiet and relaxing environment for guests is what all hoteliers wish to achieve, however these things can be difficult to do in listed buildings with draughty windows, or in lively cities!

Open cubic shelves in the multimedia wall between the sleeping and living areas appear to float in space. Accessed through a pale timber sliding door, the spacious bathroom is warmed by a detailed mosaic tile floor suggestive of a sandy shoreline and brightened by light filtering through celadon coloured glass panels. Both the floor-level shower and organically shaped, freestanding bathtub
offer ways to unwind, with an integrated TV installed in the vanity mirror above the wash basin. The wellness concept continues on through the suite’s private terrace in the sky, with comfortable lounge chairs and a dining table for enjoying the quiet tranquillity. Combining mid-century modern dÊcor with timeless Scandinavian chic, the Urban Retro suite is a home for metropolitan connoisseurs. A dark timber floor, muted colours and elegantly curved furnishings
strike a sophisticated note, while quirky accessories like the colourful scatter tables and assorted vases bring the warmth of a personal touch. Tucked back into a recessed niche lined with a calming woven grey wallcovering, the upholstered bed comes to life by a bit of modern magic as a mirrored panel on the opposing wall disguises an integrated TV monitor and electronic fireplace turned on by the flick of a switch. Classic neutrals add a crisp splash, with stylish black details from lampshades to artwork to electrical

The Natural Bliss suite has been designed for nurturing comfort outlet covers in contrast with a white chair and wall-mounted desk. Vibrant wall pegs in a 1950’s palette emphasise the artistic energy of the suite. The bathroom’s design conjures up associations with a soothing spa. Restrained shades of taupe in matte and glossy tile finishes are jazzed up by wall mosaics in intricate tone-on-tone patterns along the wall of the large, floor-level rain shower and the sculptural towel warmer. A curvaceous free-standing bathtub, a state-of-the-art washlet, and open, silver frame washstand crafted with white high-gloss timber counters, completes the look with just a hint of nostalgia.
Comfortable lounge chairs furnish the Natural Bliss suite’s private terrace
The Fifties style carries on to the outdoor terrace, where woven wicker furniture with curved metal frames offers a spot to unwind. www.JOI-Design.com
