Taking a Bite Out of Modern Office Design Peldon Rose has been providing award-winning office design, office refurbishment and workplace consultancy in London for over 30 years. Their in-house team of talented industry specialists strive to deliver inspiring office designs and transform businesses. in.Design take a look around the new Pret A Manger offices in Victoria. Photo wall celebrating Pret brand
ret A Manger wanted to create a people-centric London office which would capture and reflect the vital ingredients of their brand and culture. Pret chose a 31,500 sq ft office space at Verde SW1 in London, named 75B in honour of the first Pret shop that opened 30 years ago at 75B Victoria Street, only meters from the site of their first store. As one of London’s latest state-of-the-art office developments, Verde SW1 needed to provide the perfect base for over 300 employees, as well as visiting staff and business partners from the UK and overseas, and offer a true Pret experience for everyone who entered the space.

Pret kitchen to ensure the office matched the soul of the brand, workplace consultants Peldon Rose worked alongside Pret’s Creative Director, James Cannell, to understand the Pret culture as well as his vision and inspiration for their new London office. James is central to Pret’s branding and values, so it was essential that Peldon Rose worked in close partnership with him. this relationship would then be key to ensure the office design and fit-out was a complete success. One of the largest challenges facing the project was that Peldon Rose and their partners were trying to build an office while the very fabric of the building was still being finished. “it was like building
Bespoke joinery timeline your living room before the house is built,” reflects Jitesh Patel, CEO of Peldon Rose. Despite this, Peldon Rose was able to closely collaborate with developers tishman Speyer, main contractor Multiplex, and consultants including Aukett Swanke, WSP, MACE and Arup, to complete the project on time. “through close collaboration we were able to coordinate our deliveries and works with other contractors and have access to the necessary services to ensure the office fit-out work continued with minimal interruption,” says Patel. to create a new office for Pret that was
reflective of its people and culture, the Pret project team began by conducting an extensive workplace consultation. this brought together a leadership group of managers from each department, undertook a time and motion study examining the overall use and efficiency of each work space, an online staff profile survey, and a ‘Pret Forum’ consisting of representatives from each department to act as sounding boards as the creative process took place. to highlight Pret’s unique personality, the office design sought to tell the story of their success with design features and installations through numerous central touchpoints. All of these culminated
12 : in.Sight in a space which was to be practical and fulfil a purpose for Pret staff where they would be given the trust, freedom and space to immerse themselves in the Pret brand and celebrate their individuality by choosing where to work in the office. At reception, a blue plaque emblazoned with 75B sits on the reception desk to commemorate Pret’s first shop opening at 75B Victoria Street. Off reception is a meeting room with their first shop sign in glorious neon pink. From reception, their history is celebrated in at the amphitheatre; a versatile breakout space used for company-wide meetings the centrepiece of the office is a striking 30-year journey of Pret around the central glass atrium which lives and breathes their business and history in architectural form. this is a continuous piece of bespoke joinery, graphics and feature pieces which act as a timeline, telling the story of Pret. Coupled with the right tools and technology, this truly agile working space is completely varied and allows staff to break away from desks for meetings and lunches. they are empowered to select the space which is perfect for their mood and the work they need to focus on. Features on the timeline include a model

First shop neon sign delivery van which symbolises Pret’s unsold food donations to the homeless; fish light shades to demonstrate the use of pole and line caught tuna; classic American style booths with neon signs represent Pret’s first shop in the US; and a feature ‘PFt’ wall celebrates the Pret Foundation trust which aims to alleviate poverty in the UK by helping break the cycle of homelessness. in the lower level is a development kitchen where the food development team create new products and test recipes. this helps bring the magic of the brand in to the office. to celebrate their
global shops, close to the development kitchen are striking country themed meeting rooms – all connected to the Pret brand. Furniture was an important ingredient for the design, with large communal desks in the brief and seating and lockers provided by the Peldon Rose office furniture team. Pret took the lead with selecting the soft seating and bespoke statement furniture, with its personality shining through in quirky pieces including a flexi-canvas framed picture of a chair leaning against the wall which you can sit on. “With a brand as unique in history as Pret, Peldon Rose had to ensure that the company’s new office was truly a celebration of everything that the people at Pret have accomplished and stood for over the last 30 years,” explains Patel. “this project focused on fully understanding their people, behaviours and culture to provide them with an office that puts individuals at the heart of the company and truly embodies Pret’s simple, natural and honest values. it was a pleasure for Peldon Rose to work alongside their talented team. We’re very proud of the work which the whole project team put in to create 75B. it’s a landmark office perfect for the people of Pret.”

Hospitality Design: The Guest ‘Experience’ In this edition of in.View, Charles Leon, President of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), discusses the opportunities and challenges of hotel design, and the importance of creating a guest experience.
P
eople often mistakenly think that a hotel is all about the look and the service, but this is only a small part of the story. what really counts and what really drives a great hotel experience is the underlying philosophy. The Guest ‘Experience’ i think that is why places like The Hoxton, 25hours or CitizenM have been so successful. They have a clear and appropriate story to tell that binds everything they do together. interestingly, there are many imitators of these brands that look almost the same, yet we always feel something is missing. That missing element is consistency of direction and story. it’s about “authenticity”. everything – the design, the service, the collateral, even the supply chain, is informed by the philosophy. Contemporary guests are searching for authenticity. Not necessarily a luxury experience or a budget experience, but one that is honest and delivers what it says on the tin.
Charles Leon, President of the BiiD
entrance Lobby, Beirut Majestral, Leon Black interior Architecture Challenges and Opportunities Hotel operators will now typically have a portfolio of different brands, catered to every sector of the market, as they see it. Their difficulty is that they are synthetic rather than authentic. The newer generation of (potential) hotel guests have no loyalty to brand. Their loyalty is to their own experience and culture, and it’s usually very shortlived and changeable. if you create an honest, real experience, it will find its audience. One of the key game-changers are websites like TripAdvisor. Millennials will make more use of review sites and social media to pass information about the quality of the experiences they’ve had. As a result, i think that unless a hotel has a completely captive audience, expressed opinion will lead changes to hotel offerings. That said, it will be a race to the average unless hoteliers, designers and operators innovate and take risks.
How the BIID can support designers in this sector The BiiD is perfectly placed to support interior Designers of all types. The Register of interior Designers and the Professional Pathway are some of the many steps we have taken to ensure that the highest standards are maintained. i also think that interior designers benefit from being part of the wider design community. we want them to feel that they have the support of their peers. The Future of the Hotel The BCFA is the British business association for the contract furnishing industry, covering the full spectrum of interior products and services in the UK and globally. Over the last month, the BCFA have looked at the future of the hotel industry. They went out to interior designers and BCFA members to hear their thoughts. Here are a few of their responses… Lee Birchall, Managing Director DV8 Designs “Guests are now on the lookout for hotels that differentiate themselves from the standard and that feel more individual, and independents with a quirky theme are certainly on the rise. However, we’re finding that it’s equally as important to the customer experience for a property to retain certain principles such as resilience and an environmentally friendly offering, meaning designers need to stay ahead of the game when it comes to construction techniques.” Gina Thomson, Revivalist “The future of hotels is something much more than just a place to lay your head at night. With only a small amount of time actually being spent in the room, users expect more. The common areas of a hotel must be well designed to maximise the time someone would spend there. A hotel lobby must transitional; with an eclectic mix of multi-purpose furniture, artwork and styling and ideally hold features that are Instagram worthy. That could be some vintage pieces reimagined or some bespoke wall art to tie the scheme together. The common areas must be well thought out, encouraging working, co-working and socialising, creating a hive of activity throughout the day and easily alter into somewhere to go out and become its own destination late into the night.” Maria Vafiadis, Founder of MKV Design “We are increasingly, if far too slowly, becoming more aware of the damage we are doing to our planet. Air travel is one of the worse pollutants but
Pollux Bar, Penson Group people’s thirst to travel and discover or meet up with globally scattered family and friends takes priority. Hotels of the future will have to rise to this challenge in meaningful ways, becoming ambassadors for travel experiences that put at least as much back into environments and communities as they take.” Lee Penson, CEO Penson Group “The future of hospitality for me is what it’s not. All of the time my team and I stay in hotels all over the world and have pretty much a standard experience everywhere in the world. So, at the moment, designers are designing another hotel, and then another hotel, and another hotel, and they’re all designing lovely, amazing projects and places to stay, but the Jo & Joe brand that we have co-created with Accor is not a hotel! It’s not a hotel bed and it’s giving
people a different experience entirely. So, it’s turning the whole thing upside down and the changes are making life more fun. We are throwing in a few surprises along the way. That, to me, is where the future of hospitality is going. It’s time to have a little bit of a re-think about the same old, same old hotel.” The BCFA, last year, took this research a bit further and released a market overview report on their findings, covering the economic outlook, trends and hotel brand consolidation. The report is only available to BCFA members so for your free copy please contact Mary@thebcfa.com

Furniture industry gives evidence on trade bill the trade Bill’s Public Bill Committee is in the process of examining the Bill lineby-line, and is taking oral evidence from relevant bodies across the uK and across industry. British Furniture Confederation (BFC) chairman Jonathan Hindle gave evidence to Parliament on 25 January on the Government’s proposed trade Bill. Jonathan took the opportunity to seek clarity and continuity for the furniture industry as the uK leaves the european union. He explained that as a pragmatic industry with exporters who already
trade globally, the concerns relayed to him were about a lack of clarity on what the post-Brexit system will look like, and the effects that a weakened Pound could have. turning to the key provisions of the Bill, Jonathan cautiously welcomed the creation of a trade remedies Authority on the condition that it marked a stepchange in the policing and surveillance of uK regulations on key standards such as flammability, and strength and stability measures.

Big is Beautiful at the Stone & Ceramic Warehouse The Stone and Ceramic Warehouse is dedicated to bringing customers the finest in stone and ceramic wall and flooring surfaces to make an environment one which speaks of style, comfort and beauty.
T
he Stone and Ceramic Warehouse are proud to unveil their new slab tile showroom. Following its initial opening at the end of 2017, the space has undergone extensive renovation to allow visitors to truly appreciate SACW’s stunning collection of enormous porcelain slab tiles. It is well known that clean lines can help increase the feeling of space, and laying larger tiles is a great way to achieve this. At just 3 - 6mm thick, SACW’s slab tiles are easy to handle and span from 120 x 240cm up to a huge 160 x 320cm. “Slab tiles are perfect for anyone wanting to create sleek, modern interior designs and are an excellent low-maintenance solution for any kind of room,” commented Chris grainger, Managing Director of the Stone and Ceramic Warehouse. “using oversized tiles in a small area tricks the eye into thinking that the room is much bigger than it really is, so can help to create a sense of scale. our new showroom allows these tiles to be displayed in their full, impressive size, so that customers can really appreciate their impact.” Today’s technologies mean that there are many advantages of using these large porcelain tiles over natural stone slabs, such as marble. For example, the cost of porcelain is at least 60% cheaper than the stone it imitates and fitting can be as much as 50% less as it is quicker to install and due to the thickness and weight, easier to handle. Alongside this, porcelain is hard-wearing and stain resistant, meaning it does not require sealing, a specialist cleaning regime or
grande Yeso Silver maintenance. Thanks to their large surface area, porcelain slab tiles create a continuous, uninterrupted finish with very few grout lines, making them easier to keep clean. The Stone and Ceramic Warehouse’s new showroom is the perfect place to really understand the scale of these
products. Here, customers can see these tiles in a whole range of realistic finishes, including wood, marble, natural limestone, concrete and metallic, to help them find the perfect surface for their project. For more information, visit www. stoneandceramicwarehouse.co.uk

Smart, Sustainable & Steel Silverline, a leading British designer and manufacturer of steel storage, offer contemporary storage solutions which maximise space efficiency tastefully within all areas of the workplace and across all commercial environments. CEO, Richard Ward and the in.Design team discuss innovation, sustainability and Silverline’s “smart storage” collection.
As 2018 begins to unfold, what kind of market trends are you witnessing? Trends within the office furniture market are continually moving towards more flexible and agile working scenarios. In connection with storage in particular, it’s been about developing smarter storage solutions, for example, powered personal lockers and high-density storage to respond to hot desking environments and smaller footprints. Can you describe some of Silverline’s smart storage products? Silverline’s latest products include Switch, Sleek & Stack. To focus in on Switch, it allows you to charge up multiple personal devices quickly and securely within a multiple locker system. Designed with a tidy integrated power bar which can be accessorised with a range of ‘clip on /clip off’ uSB connectors and three-pin plugs, it allows you to power your devices easily and safely in busy environments. For added versatility, a variety of our latest options are available with Switch including acoustic panels, white boards and coat hooks. How is your manufacturing process both innovative and sustainable? In regard to manufacturing, we have a 125 sq.ft facility in Suffolk and pride ourselves on being a longestablished family run uK business. Due to the nature of the products and the limitations of the raw material used in Silverline’s products, as well as responding to market trends, innovation lies in incorporating features that offer benefits such as reconfigurable solutions
Switch for future scenarios and consideration to the end of a products life. each product reaches, at some point, the end of its life so we design to ensure there is ease of entry into the recycling chain. Silverline continually invest in stateof-the-art machinery. our most recent purchase was a £350K laser cutting machine to increase flexibility, quality, and to be ahead of potential new expectations that develop in the market. Silverline see this type of investment, which improves processes and increases capacity, as key to future growth and stability in the marketplace.
Can you tell our readers a bit about your London showroom? our showroom, The gallery, lies within the heart of Clerkenwell. It’s a vibrant space which is shared with a small selection of other complementary manufacturers within the industry. Richard, what does the future hold for Silverline? Silverline, having built strong foundations within the uK, have a strategy to develop the brand throughout europe and further afield. This combined with continual product and process development is where we see our future heading.

In its final stages of development, the new building will provide five Grade A serviced offices on the ground floor for local upstarts and SME’s, and a working showroom and CPD event space on the first floor to aid their A&D brethren with their continual professional development obligations. Their new building is a subtly intricate and purposefully understated amalgamation of styles and textures
which are seamlessly brought together in order to produce a working showroom that highlights all of Spatial’s capabilities. Consisting of 5000 sq ft spread over two floors, they have somehow managed to blend well in excess of 50 manufacturers of fit-out supplies, steel work, furniture, partitions, lighting, flooring, and IT together to create a wonderfully subtle balance between low end and high end specification. They have managed
to create a beautifully cohesive space showcasing the very best of fit-out and furniture solutions aimed at all price points - making the entire building a showcase of their work where every item, every nook and cranny, is a solution to some problem faced by offices around the country. There is an understated elegance about the property. A subtlety that you can’t quite put your finger on. A collision of hundreds of minor intricacies of design seamlessly blending together to create an office space that sells without being too overpowering. Once complete, they will proudly have somewhere they can showcase the very best of fit-out and furniture solutions for all price points and a space where their A&D partners can visit and collude with clients in comfort. If you’re in A&D and wish to know more about Spatial’s upcoming CPD events or how they can help you with your projects, feel free to contact them on: 0161 850 5620 or visit www.spatial.co.uk.

The Alphabet of Light standard products are available as numbers, upper- and lower-case letters
A Language of Light Italian lighting brand Artemide, renowned for its design, quality and innovation, has created its own language of light in collaboration with Danish architecture and design firm, BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group).
A
lphabet of Light is comprised of a series of wall-mounted letters that are formed from curved and linear elements of LeD strip light. A fine display of mechanical innovation; each strip light is connected using electromagnets to allow for quick reconfiguration of the lamp, making assembly easy for the user. When illuminated, the system’s entire inner workings and joints are concealed, leaving only a minimalist and elegant product on display. Made with ground breaking high-tech, patented optoelectronics, Alphabet of Light emits a smooth, even light which can travel up to a maximum of five metres along the connected elements. An abacus of essential geometries that can be rearranged to form letters or
words as well as graphic signs, Alphabet of Light is a bespoke typeface that translates into light; an alphabet to express one’s thoughts or a tool to give shape to spaces. These simple base modules, with specific geometric proportions, can be combined
with one another to create countless basic or more complex, linear or curved structures of light. Components are available in different sizes meaning the light can be customised and scaled to fit different walls, ceilings or spaces within minutes.
Circular and linear options, along with a system of configurable parts extend the range

“The Man Who Illuminated Finland” Gubi are on a continual quest – a journey. Fuelled by their passion to discover overlooked icons from the past and future icons in the making, Gubi have made a distinctive name for themselves in the international design arena as a dynamic design force to be reckoned with.
P
restigious design company, gubi, is proud to haveacquired the rights to one of the most iconic lighting designers through time – the Finnish pioneer, Paavo Tynell. Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was an industrial designer, known as the great pioneer of Finnish lighting design and fondly dubbed as “the man who illuminated Finland”. A master craftsman himself, Tynell’s designs were derivative of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility, mixed with an extensive use of perforated and polished brass as material. Marked by delicacy and softness, his most famous forms in lighting echo the structures of nature; he adroitly created sculptural shapes reminiscent of the branches of trees, swirling snowflakes and seashells. Paavo Tynell’s fanciful take on nature is gracefully echoed in the 5321 Table Lamp, designed by the Finnish designer in 1941. under the distinctive shellinspired brass shade, the bulb subtly appears from beneath; a picturesque detail resembling the desirable sea

5321 Table Lamp shell pearl and making the 5321 Table Lamp a perfect example on how Tynell brought a playful nature and romance to the simplified style of mid-century modernism. Blending timeless aesthetic with a unique sense of form, the 5321 Table Lamp adds an exquisite character to complement any modern space. Both decorative and functional, the lamp is a balance of elegance and curiosity, providing a design that is at once subtle and surprising. The 1965 Pendant was originally designed by Paavo Tynell in 1948. Like many of his best-known designs, the pendant was designed for the Finland House in New York – one of the most ambitious and successful projects of all
time to showcase Finnish design. Perfecting the techniques of metal finishes, Tynell developed the 1965 Pendant with his exceptional ability to capture and translate a grace and exuberant lightness into his brass creations. Characterized by its triangular perforation pattern, an artistic detail utilised by Tynell in several of his lighting objects, the 1965 Pendant reflects the distinguished craftsmanship of the Finnish designer. With a frosted glass diffuser that softens the light, the pendant contributes to a subtle and tranquil environment. Visit, www.gubi.com to see the full collection

Voice of Colour: Find Your New Colour Inspiration Colour means different things to people all over the world. It can impact our lives in unimaginable ways. From our earliest days, colour shapes how we interpret the world around us, playing a unique role in learning, recognition, creating memories and influencing our emotions. As such, colour is one of the most powerful tools a designer has at their disposal – it is the foundations of a story which paints people, places and personality.
T
his was the thinking behind Voice of Colour. First launched in America, Voice of Colour has now brought the latest colour trends, and Colour of the Year – Black Flame – to Johnstone’s Trade paints and its uK customers. Featuring four central, themed stories, the 2018 trends guide, Corelation, allows designers to interpret their clients’ personality with a theme best suited to their individuality. Created by colour experts The vision for the Voice of Colour palette is brought to life by a team of global colour experts. every year, representatives from South Asia, America and europe, amongst others, gather to share their colour expertise. Taking inspiration from a whole host of industries – architecture, automotive, fashion – it is from a collective knowledge and passion that the Voice of Colour trends are born. During this process, the Colour of the Year is selected. The final result of expert colour knowledge - and a shared excitement between the chosen specialists - Black Flame, Colour of the Year for 2018, underlies the central Corelation themes. A dramatic, versatile colour blending classic black and deep indigo, the statement shade evokes a sense of privacy, hope and modernism. Black forms the silence we crave in an overwhelming world; indigo inspires endless possibility and deep hopefulness. Stories of self and spirit As it unfolds, Corelation follows four key colour stories, designed to reflect
in.Vogue : 33 Colouring the design process The Voice of Colour palette offers a cohesive guide through the design journey. Traditionally, designers might consult fan decks with thousands of options when they’re choosing colour schemes. The Corelation trends guide complements Voice of Colour’s wider colour palette, allowing designers to develop a holistic scheme where every element of the design resonates with the clients’ personality. For example, a creative agency looking to rework their office space might identify with The Dream Weaver – an artful, playful, creative story. A coastal home might align itself more closely with the Retreater theme, inspired by the desire for escapism and solitude. By recognising and responding to the unique personalities depicted in Corelation, designers can use the guide to develop an interior which accommodates the right themes and moods for their client.
relatable and real personalities. The first story is that of The Retreater. This theme addresses a growing need to withdraw from the chaos, pressures and overstimulation of modern daily life. For the Retreater, it’s all about light, airy tones which develop a sense of calm and balance - a moment’s peace amongst the hectic demands of 21st century living. The Dream Weaver colour palette most strongly resonates with individuals who emulate free spirit, creativity and shine. Muted and ethereal brights are complemented with earth-based tones in this collection. The Commoner colour palette connects with those attracted to minimalist designs which emphasise the return to basics. The palette expresses diversity and eclectic living. Anticipate muted colours, with vague tints of the rainbow. The final story is The Brave. This
collection mirrors a new generation rising up to face our uncertain times with strength, stability and safety. Deep, rich, luxurious colours make up a substantial palette. Black Flame is the anchor colour which interweaves the Corelation trends, providing a versatile, contemporary shade across all four central themes.
For the Voice of Colour design experts, individuality and bravery are at the heart of good design. This belief is the most fundamental element of Voice of Colour and the 2018 Corelation trends guide. Weaving Local History into London Hotel Design Following the success of the multi-award-winning Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington, Dexter Moren Associates were re-appointed by the client, Anton Fedun, to realise Vintry & Mercer, a new destination hotel situated between the architectural triumph of St Paul’s Cathedral and the modern optimism of The Shard. Read on to follow the threads that weave this distinctive and engaging design together.
W
hen the client approached Dexter Moren Associates with the Vintry & Mercer hotel opportunity, a planning approved scheme with bedrooms focussed around a tiny internal courtyard, it had already commenced on site. they redesigned the scheme, working within the approved external envelope and increasing the number of external aspect rooms, with an improved entrance and guest experience aligned with more efficient servicing. the team of designers drew upon their fundamental understanding of the varied and individualistic nature of London’s districts to create bespoke design features to engage guests with the story
of the hotel’s creation, neighbourhood and history. With this in mind, signature aspects of the Ampersand such as a grand stair, were reinterpreted for this site with the added feature of rooftop space harnessing the site’s unique view of St Paul’s. the Vintry & Mercer shares a common link with the Ampersand in that both are immersed in and visually reference their respective local communities. in effect, both tell a story. in the case of the Vintry & Mercer, this is based upon the history of garlick hill hythe and its medieval trade guilds: the vintners, mercers and merchant tailors. Dexter Moren Associates have used specialist finishes in joinery to chronicle
this near forgotten heritage of rare wines and fine silks traded from across the globe; metal stud detailing is used and wardrobe doors are inset with brass mesh for a more refined look. Custommade digitally printed wallcoverings and bespoke designed carpets reflect the fabrics manufactured in that period. thoughtfully curated art compliments a stunning light sculpture which pulls guests through to a feature staircase at the heart of the building and onwards. “these interiors are eclectic, a word that is nowadays overused but is nevertheless appropriate for this hotel. the contemporary character of the City is combined with its inspirational history throughout; the old-world charm of vintage inspired furniture and joinery is
in.Sight : 37 melded with modern, clean detailing. it’s a playful marriage of the two”, explains lead senior designer, giada gemignani. in the hotel lobby guests are presented with a bespoke chronometric installation behind the reception, entitled ‘time is Now’. Made using old and discarded watch and clock parts, ‘time is Now’ investigates the idea of time and change. No longer functional and suspended motionless apart from their contingent parts, the mechanics of time are meticulously frozen; within the space of the frame time has stopped, but outside its inevitability is inescapable. Additionally, the lobby will host ‘One Penny’, an artwork over a metre across that represents the rare 1651 Britannia penny, commissioned by george Vi, depicting Britannia triumphant, complete with helmet and trident. the artist selected this particular coin as a perfect representation of the trade links between London and the rest of the world.
Reception tea Lounge the Library continues this homage to the City and its international connections through the adaptation of gerard Van Shagen’s exquisite 1689 map of the world as a magnificent ceiling artwork. Room types are varied in their
materiality and palette to reflect the nature of the chosen guilds, with a focus on the composition and scale of traditional patterns and furniture forms. grandiose winged headboards with bespoke damask and velvet upholstery take centre stage. From the 110

Roof Bar terrace liveried companies of the City of London, five were chosen: the grocers, haberdashers, ironmongers, Skinners – who would sell their wares in the aptly named Skinner Lane adjacent to the hotel and the Vintners, who were first chartered in 1363. these five provide rich inspiration for the hotel. Bathrooms feature coloured glazed tiles laid in a herringbone pattern, while black and white mosaic tiles create bold stripes under the bespoke marble vanities. these specific patterns, and the twill weave inspired carpets, directly link to the fabrics used by the merchant tailors. Dressing areas are a modern play on a deconstructed travel trunk, featuring scraped textured oak veneer with brass mesh inset panels and a plush palm print to the interior. Crittall-style glazing has been inserted into the top of the bathroom walls to filter natural light in to the bedroom side to maintain privacy. the Mercer rooftop bar is based on a countryside orangery and celebrates the venues’ views of St. Paul’s Cathedral. the Vintry Kitchen offers a relaxed easy style of dining, enhanced by a clever combination of plantation shutters paired with angled mirrors to throw natural illumination across the space from the roof light above.
Lighting is further controlled to create a more intimate setting for evening guests. high button backed banquettes in buff leather sit with marble topped tables on herringbone tiled floors, with feature penny tiled mosaics. in contrast the opulent basement speakeasy bar, Do Not Disturb, revels in dark, rich, decadent tones with luscious velvet booths, deco inspired wall coverings and curiosities, all wrapped in low level lighting to set the mood.

Associate director Lindsey Bean-Pearce concludes: “the hotel is a series of layers that unfold to tell the story. Much like the pages in a good novel that you always want to re-read, we aspire V&M to be the same, with guests wanting to revisit.” Vintry & Mercer features 92 guestrooms, a state-of-the-art gym, a breakout area and three meeting rooms, the largest of which will have capacity for up to 28 guests. the hotel will open in Spring 2018. A Week in The Life of Pernille Stafford Pernille studied at the Royal College of Art and has been working within the industry for over 25 years. Her father was a furniture designer in the 60’s and her mother a Danish Antique dealer, so design has been present in her life from a very young age. Pernille set up Resonate in 2012, born out of a desire to create memorable environments and special spaces that engage with the occupant at many levels. Their primary focus is commercial interiors, offices, hospitality, retail and education environments. Monday i walk into the office eager to start another exciting week. even after four and a half years of Resonate, i am deeply proud of our little team and love going to work. once everyone is settled, we have a team meeting and run through the projects and tasks for the commencing week. We discuss workload resourcing, any ideas or inspiring designs the team has seen over the weekend, and review plans and designs on all current projects. We are working on a real mixture of different projects at the moment which include offices, a law firm, and a large trading floor for an oil company.
i often travel around europe, so by lunchtime i am off to heathrow for a flight to my second home town, Copenhagen. i have a non-executive board role for a Scandinavian company, so after a quick stroll around Nyhaven and the Royal palace to absorb some Skandi culture, i’m off to a business dinner to discuss product types, portfolios and strategy with a client. Tuesday i head out to a local office in the newly renovated docklands area. The space is constantly evolving and appears different each time i visit. it is now very fashionable and beautifully designed. i
throw myself into a day full of meetings. My role within the company is to assist with product selection, introduce new ideas, review branding strategies, comment on workplace trends, review budgets and launch timetables. once the meetings have concluded, i rush to the airport. i get back to heathrow around 8pm and then i am off home for a glass of wine and a catch up with my better half! Wednesday Still feeling inspired from my trip, i go through with the team what i have seen and heard – from new finishes and fabrics that could apply to our projects to
in.The Life of : 41
Pernille Stafford the details of a living wall i saw in the airport. i share some photos of some gorgeous light fittings. Later on, i go to see the space for a new client, a contractor for an office in Central London. it is a clever refurbishment, mixing the heritage of the building with contemporary fittings. one of the great privileges of my job is that i get access to so many amazing spaces, with the most exquisite architecture and views. i take a brief from the client in how they want their organisation to look and feel and how they want to be represented in their new space. We start with the organisation culture and go through mood boards and images so they can highlight their likes and dislikes. Businesses are very much like people - they all have their personalities and quirks which need understanding and translating into a workplace environment. The rest of the day goes by in a blur of meetings and emails. i review designs from the team, red-line some plans for amendments and then issue for client approval. Thursday Thursday is a creative day in our very egalitarian office! i work with the team on a concept design for a local authority, transforming the way they work and their building stock. We have a bit of a lightbulb moment and come up with the big idea that will completely rejuvenate their site. We now need to work out how we can make it function for them financially. We brainstorm various ideas and have some fun working out which bits we will all contribute to. We all make tea, draw and create! our amazing
integro
fleet Street visualiser brings these ideas to life in a way i can only imagine in my head. i am then out for a networking event to meet up with friends in the industry for an informal catch up (and cocktails)! Friday We have a new enquiry for an Art Gallery, which is hugely exciting. They want a futuristic design so i am absolutely buzzing with ideas. The
afternoon is spent catching up with paperwork and accounts. Sadly, the business consumes many hours of noncreative time but this is essential for the smooth running of the practice. i try and leave at a reasonable time on a friday to collect my gorgeous boys and possibly girlfriends, ready for a relaxing weekend! What a week – never a dull moment. i love every minute of it. onwards and upwards!

Embracing Industrial Chic Quartz is one of nature’s strongest materials. It is impervious to stains, scratches and cracks and is highly temperature resistant. Caesarstone surfaces have unlimited application possibilities and now come with a 25-year guarantee for domestic worktops.
C
aesarstone’s cutting-edge quartz surfaces have been specified by Ballymore for its goodluck Hope Project of 804 upmarket and fashionable, industrial loft-style apartments. The goodluck Hope Project by Ballymore Property group will comprise of 804 one, two and three-bedroom warehouse and tower apartments featuring Caesarstone worktops, splashbacks and islands in finishes such as the brand’s en-vogue Rugged Concrete colour. The ongoing development will offer design-savvy buyers a contemporary warehouse lifestyle on the River Thames. Rugged Concrete is one of the Caesarstone quartz surface colours available for kitchen worktops, islands and splashbacks in the desirable apartments. “Rugged Concrete provides the perfect look to enhance our apartments,” says Padraig Hanly, Product Director at Ballymore. “It was not a difficult decision to choose these worktops. Rugged Concrete is unique in that it meets both the aesthetic requirements around creating a warehouse/industrial feel to the homes, as well as the practical design and usage
needs thanks to the hard-wearing and stain-resistant qualities of Caesarstone quartz.” The architecture and exterior design of goodluck Hope is drawn from the areas previous incarnation, evident in the forms, patterns and colours of the bricks from the central street of orchard Place to the restored grade II-listed Dry Dock and each of the surrounding buildings to create a cohesive, contemporary design aesthetic. “Rugged Concrete offers all the aesthetic qualities, charm, even imperfections
of cast concrete but without any of the shortcomings,” says guy Rawstorne, VP of Sales at Caesarstone. “It has a beautiful coarse appearance that perfectly emulates the randomly pitted texture of actual cast concrete; but it’s smooth and cool to touch which is a true virtue of quartz. It will offer something truly unique and contemporary for the open-plan kitchens. We are delighted that Ballymore selected Caesarstone to partner on this project and we look forward to delivering surfaces of an unrivalled quality for all 804 apartments.” The Caesarstone Concrete series has embraced the trend for industrial décor and raw materials used in design. The addition of 4033 Rugged Concrete strives to push these boundaries even further. Not for the faint-hearted, Rugged Concrete will make a daring and bold addition to a room; its urban inspired design accentuated by dark grey tones and unique imperfections offers a textured look to its finish. 2018 Tile Trends Solus Ceramics is an established porcelain, ceramic, glass, metal and natural stone tile supplier, offering a huge range of over 100,000 products, directly sourced from manufacturing partners. Working with architects, interior designers and other professional specifiers, the company delivers technical and aesthetic solutions into a wide variety of tiling projects across Europe.
W
ith 2017 dominated by metallic inspired designs, 2018 is set to be an exciting year when it comes to new floor and wall tile trends. Stephen Baker, Sales and Marketing Director at Solus Ceramics, discusses the emerging tile designs set to take 2018 by storm. The use of natural inspired tile has gathered momentum over the past few years, but in 2018 we are set to see this trend develop even further. There are a multitude of material-themed effect tiles such as concrete, limestone and even marble. Those looking to create a unique standout effect can add a touch of creativity and mix and match the different natural themed tiles.
The use of metallic style tiles is an exciting trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. A unique and versatile medium, you can find tiles that replicate almost every different type of material. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that designers are choosing tiles to create metal effect floor and wall schemes. Not only are we seeing many recently introduced ranges inspired by precious metals such as gold, silver and bronze, but there is also proving to be a huge demand for more rustic interpretations of metal, such as worn and weathered iron, copper and steel coloured tiles, which will suit an aesthetic inspired by urban and industrial trends. guaranteed to demand the attention of
a room, 3D tiles will be a trend certain to take 2018 by storm. Available for both floors and walls, 3D tiles bring an elegant touch with limited effort. A fantastic advantage of using these tiles is the wide range of sizes and patterns available including herringbone, hexagonal and triangular. This allows architects and designers the freedom to use a single colour, mix and match different colours, create repeated patterns or even mix and match different finishes to create an endless amount of unique designs. The concept of Symmetry & pattern to create beauty & elegance

Evolution of the Trapezoid Founded in 1974, Tonalite design, produce and sell quality interior and exterior ceramic floor and wall tiles. Tonalite’s products have been conceived in a wide range of colours and with a complementary and versatile variety of shapes and special trims.
T
onalite is a company which loves to dare, break the traditional patterns and explore new directions. Some of its collections seem to awaken the will of originality and fantasy which disappeared after many years of minimalism. The changes in style realised by Tonalite are in colours, patterns, finishings and formats. Inspired by this latest trend, the tile manufacturers have introduced the new collection, Trapez, where geometric shape gives rhythm to the composition. It is a collection thought for covering and flooring, based on the modularity of trapezoidal items 23x10 that create
unusual visual effects. To complete the composition, the Trapez tiles are available in a wide range of colours. Light, pastel colours fit with the graphic patterns perfectly. However, for those who prefers instead to stop this light mood with something more vibrant, the tiles are available in petrol blue, indigo and sage green colours to create great texture and impact. The Trapez glossy collection is available in the following colours: gesso, Polvere, Piombo, Ardesia, Pergamena, Sand, Tabacco, Trapez Indigo, Trapex Sky, Trapez Sage and Trapez ottanio. Talco, Pomice, Cemento, Lavagna, Seta,
Lino, Tufo, Trapez Indaco, Trapez Mint and Trapez Teal are matched perfectly with the Matt collection. Tonalite has always stood out for its ongoing research aimed at improving tiles’ aesthetic performance and achieving advanced technical and quality standards, offering the most demanding consumers and professionals the best solution for all applications.
