Welcome to the July issue of in.Design magazine!
After recovering from the May Design series and a fantastic Clerkenwell Design Week, we’re now looking forward to the next tranche of shows with our previews for 100% Design, the Manchester Furniture show, and designjunction.
Following the success of their annual conference in June, the BiiD are also eagerly awaiting september as they announce their support for the London Design Festival. They have also unveiled their Private Tour series, part of their CPD programme, and an animated video short that will demonstrate the benefits of their Professional Pathway.
Our Week in the Life this month features the talented Joanna Barr of Ham interiors, and in in.Brief gregor Jackson of gpstudio describes how they re-designed the jewellery and watch departments of Aprey’s, in this fantastic new Bond street store.
And what’s trending? We speak to the experts to look at what carpets residential clients are choosing, the increased use of wall tiles – now breaking away from kitchens and bathrooms – and the importance of the staircase as a featured design element.
Did i speak too soon last month about enjoying the sun? Many apologies for that, i’ll see what i can do for July!
Hope you have a great month.

100% Design Show Preview The UK’s largest design show unveils an exciting new direction for 2013, and will be attracting over 30,000 visitors to Earls Court over the 18th to 21st September!
1
00% Design has unveiled key details of its event in September. The show theme Creative Balance underpins the event’s award-winning layout and identity; it has been conceived by specialist communications design agencies Thomas. Matthews and Form. Four halls will again represent industry sectors – Interiors, Office, Kitchen & Bathroom, Eco Design & Build – each arranged around a central ‘hub’ space to meet, learn and be inspired. The Central Bar at the heart of the show is reached through a 66m long tunnel, designed by creative and live events specialists Studio Design UK. This year, the Interiors hub will explore the growing emphasis on 3D printing as an accessible method of production. The Office hub will be created by design practice TILT, with dramatic suspended room elements lowered and raised to continually change the hub’s function. The Kitchen & Bathroom hub will explore design’s role in enabling micro agriculture, with a restaurant serving foods which can be grown on a small domestic scale. A separate installation will present the latest innovations for the bathroom industry. The Eco Design & Build hub will be produced by London-based studio Material Lab with an inspiring installation of the world’s most innovative building and architectural materials. 100% Design has expanded its International Pavilions, taking 3,000m2 of
space within Earls Court 1. Design regions from France, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, South Korea, Taiwan and China have already been confirmed. The show’s central boulevards will again showcase Emerging Brands; design companies that have been in operation for five years or less. In addition, the Gateway exhibition – a new feature for 2013 – will provide opportunities for early-career designers to be recognized with collaborators including the Lighting Industry Association, Design Council, the Royal
College of Art, and Design Guild Mark. Finally, British designer Benjamin Hubert will create the 2013 auditorium, providing a dramatic backdrop to Talks With 100% Design; the UK’s largest design talks programme. Confirmed speakers include Tom Dyckhoff, Peter Murray and Giulio Cappellini. Visit www.100percentdesign.co.uk for further information and updates on what promises to be a great show.

Manchester Furniture Show Preview The industry’s longest running furniture trade exhibition, the Manchester Furniture Show, continues to sell out every summer – and 2013 will be no exception with over 130 exhibitors, among them many well known companies and some major UK launches
I
t speaks volumes for the enduring appeal of the Manchester Furniture Show that it continues to attract new exhibitors, with this year’s roster boosted by the best of home and abroad. Taking place in the iconic halls of Manchester Central from the 14th to the 17th of July, the show has once again attracted a first class line up. Among them is Greenapple, the contemporary purveyor of occasional glass furniture and home accents, whose presence highlights the evolution not just of the furniture market here in Britain but of an expansive outlook that visitors to Manchester have on products in their stores. Yet to emphasise how rooted The Manchester Show is in commercial volume-

For the high-end kitchen The philosophy of a modern kitchen: A modern kitchen is full of contradictions. It must be multifunctional and have an a esthetic clean design. Often it is placed in an open environment partly functioning as a kitchen and partly as a living room/social space. Equipped with the necessary appliances, but at the same time it should take up limited space. And last but not least it must fit the user’s needs for functionality and ergonomics. By adding movement to your kitchen these contradictions can be eliminated. Movement via linear actuator technology can hide appliances not in use thereby creating clean multifunctional surfaces, such as lift kitchen tables to ergonomic correct working heights, or bring down cupboards to reach tableware. There are endless possibilities when adding electric movement.

BIID Unveils Professional Pathway Video The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has produced an animated video short to support the launch of the BIID Professional Pathway
T
he new video is a 90 second animated short, created on behalf of the Institute by Dan Ojari, an award-winning animator and director. It makes clever use of the BIID’s visual identity to take designers on a simple-to-follow journey explaining the BIID Professional Pathway. The video is available to view on the BIID website at www.biid. org.uk. “We are delighted with the new video,” says Debra McQuin, the Institute’s Marketing Director. “We felt it was important to provide a visual guide for interior designers to help them understand the BIID Professional Pathway, and how best they can access and benefit from it. This video is an important tool and a perfect complement to the printed Professional Pathway guides the Institute has also produced”. The BIID Professional Pathway introduces, for the first time, a national professional standard for interior designers. Comprising five distinct modules – Design Process; Communication and Presentation; Construction, Materials, Manufacture and Sustainability; Professional Practice; and Final Project – the BIID Professional Pathway
is designed to be undertaken whilst the candidate is working as an interior designer. This allows the use of knowledge and skills gained in everyday practice to evidence professional competence. The BIID Professional Pathway also offers flexibility, with entry at different points depending on the qualifications and experience an interior designer has already gained. Entry to the BIID Professional Pathway is free as part of a BIID Associate Membership. If the candidate is employed by a BIID Design Practice, they are entitled to a 25% discount on their annual membership rate. To view the video and for more information on the BIID Professional Pathway, please visit www.biid.org.uk/professionalpathway.

A Week In The Life Of Joanna Barr Joanna Barr started her design career after studying at KLC and gaining an Honours. Her design career started at Sarah Hudson Design from where she went to The London Furnishing Company before joining the family business at Ham Interiors at the start of 2011. She now works on a variety of high profile clients’ residential and commercial properties in London and the Home Counties Monday I always make sure I get into the office early to make sure I have time to settle back in after the weekend, before tackling the week ahead. I make myself a very strong black coffee and start the day off by checking through my emails and then running
through my jobs and what the week has in store. My assistant (and right hand) Ilana is my ears and eyes and makes sure we are as organized as we can be. We run through all of our jobs and make a list in order of importance what we need to get onto first thing. We then sit down and have a meeting with the rest of the team so we all know where we are that week and if we need to pull in any help on installations. It is also a great time to discuss new suppliers and contractors that we might have found and can recommend as we like to keep up with new trends and introduce new suppliers where we can. I don’t usually like to have any meetings on a Monday as I use it to make sure I speak with all my clients and my admin is all up to date but today I have a meeting with a client at Mowlem on the Kings Road. We are completely gutting her large five bedroom house in Gerrards Cross for which we have totally redesigned the interior. It’s a project which I feel I need to be involved with at every stage. Usually on a project like this
in.HER LIFE : 19
Sumptuous comfort in this sitting room!
20 : in.HER LIFE the initial design stage can go on for as long as six months before the renovations actually begin. Today, as usual, I grab my salad wrap and eat it in the car on the way back to the office. I am not one for finishing early. I like to use the hour or two when everyone has gone to get some quiet time to write out proposals or quotes so I can go home with a clear head. Tuesday I have a meeting in London first thing today. My client BMOR is a very up and coming developer and I consult on the design of all their developments. We are nearing the end of one of the properties off Chancery Lane and finalizing the designs of another. The builders start work this week, so it’s imperative that we have regular design meetings with the architects and contractors to iron out any issues that might occur along the way.
First floor landing of private residence project
When I have any meetings in London I will always try and take the opportunity to meet with a friend or my mum for lunch or coffee. Today my mum comes to meet me at Manocomios on the Kings Road for lunch, before I have to head up to Islington for a new client meeting. Before meeting any new client we try and quantify them on the phone to get a good idea of what design services they require and what budget they have so I have something of an idea to take with me to the initial meeting. I always like the first meet to be very relaxed and informal as I feel that designer and client must essentially “gel and get on if we are to work together closely on their project. It should be a good experience for both parties.

The Bremont store in Mayfair’s South Audley Street pleased with the end result, I have a very critical eye and always feel that there was something I could do better! Installs can be pretty tiring so I grab my afternoon coffee and head back to the office and check through my emails before heading home to pour myself a large glass of wine. With it being a family business, I am not one to leave work at work and therefore even if I am not working on one of my projects, I like to look for new ideas and inspiration in design magazines and on Pinterest. It actually helps me unwind! Thursday As I do every morning, I get up at 7am and walk my two dogs Indie and Boodika. My husband Tom and I are lucky that we live next to a nature reserve and therefore it’s a great time to get out and think before rushing home, making my morning smoothie and heading to the office. I am away on holiday next week so I am trying to get as organized as I can before I go and there is a lot to get through as I currently have twelve active clients on my books.
The store encompasses the heritage of the Bremont brand

Fabulous collectors’ items from Bremont My client from yesterday’s install recommended us to a friend nearby so I head over to their new house to discuss floor options and paint colours. I am fortunate that I have a great working relationship with all my clients and really enjoy each meeting. Once leaving the clients, I stop off to get my nails done for my holiday before stopping by Waitrose to grab a bag load of ingredients
for a winning salad which I usually make up in the office and have at my desk. Tonight I get home for 7pm, as we have friends for dinner. Friday I have a large design presentation early this morning so we load up the car the night before with the design boards we have been working on over the last couple of weeks, fabric books and supplier brochures
to take with us. This morning the meeting is with a couple who have just refurbished their house beautifully and just need some help with furnishings and window dressings. They are happy with the presentation so we take notes and head back to the office to draw up a quote to send back for them to confirm. We tie up all the loose ends that need tying up, then I head home for a well deserved glass of red wine!

London Launch For Laguna Rugs Laguna Rugs, producers of high quality hand knotted rugs, have recently launched their business on Gloucester Road in South Kensington, delivering a fully bespoke service to contract and residential clients
W
ith a range of contemporary designs, Laguna Rugs offers predesigned collections, and a completely bespoke service to meet client requirements. The collection combines carefully sourced materials from Nepal including the highest quality wools, silks, and other luxurious yarns, which are hand knotted into intricate designs. Each have their own unique look and characteristics, which give clients a far greater choice of designs without compromising on quality. Laguna’s in-house designers can create a design for any scheme, whilst always being sensitive to a client’s vision. Designs can be big or small; whichever is required for a given brief. With a selection of in-house rugs available to choose from, consumers can either choose an existing design or develop a bespoke option for their particular vision or interior scheme. The rugs at Laguna begin their delicate process out in the Himalayan mountains of Tibet, where sheep are reared for their lanolin-rich wool. Himalayan sheep have the best durable wool in the world; it is luxuriously soft and soaks up colour
beautifully. Once the wool is sheared it is transported to a river where the bales are washed by hand, then left to naturally dry on the banks. The wool is then transported to skilled carders and spinners who make the wool into yarn, ready for the colour dying process. Once dyed, they are hung out to dry naturally. They are then hand-spun into balls, so weaving and knotting can begin - this part of the process is probably the most time consuming. The time scale on making up the rug can vary, depending on the size, the amount of knots per square inch, and different colours within the design.
Once the hand-knotting is completed, the rug is cut away from the loom, thoroughly washed by hand, and left to dry in the sunshine. This process also contributes to the overall quality and finish of the rug. Laguna Rugs are ideal for clients who are looking for high quality durable pieces that sit elegantly across both residential and commercial projects.

Modern materials add to the choice – from silks to bamboo to incredible man-made fibres – the only problem is making a decision! “Pattern is being used in a very individual way, to express personality in interiors”, explains Jeremy Wilson, Ulster’s Residential Sales Director. “For example, people have been using stripes and plaids to make hallways, stairs and other areas modern, funky and different. “There has also been a definite move back towards colour, with fabric, wallpaper and accessories in teal, plum, mustard, fresh yellow-greens and blues. The fusty floral designs of old are being passed over for contemporary geometrical prints, and colours that are very carefully coordinated combine to mesmerising effect. “In terms of fibre, soft and luxurious yarns are becoming increasingly popular, with polyamide a particular favourite thanks to its plush feel and great performance qualities. Tufted velour pile provides exceptional softness and durability, and designs can be easily printed onto the surface for high levels of clarity.” Monochrome always adds a stylish touch,
allowing a big colour to add impact elsewhere in the design. “Following the current trend from the top fashion houses, we have had many enquiries for large scale black and white geometrics, tribal designs, ikats or tiger prints,” said Amy Lawton, Concept Handtufting’s Design Director. “This trend has been both for residential and also commercial projects. They are timeless, have high impact and can create drama on the floor.” Whilst some trends may come and go, geometric patterns have a timelessness which makes them an ideal investment
when considering bespoke flooring; geometric patterns can add sleek, symmetrical simplicity to any room. Birger Karlsson, UK and Ireland sales manager of Lano Carpets, has noticed that carpets specified for residential interiors are increasingly required to fulfil a demanding range of criteria – they must be soft, durable, sustainable, comfortable underfoot and stylish all at once. “To meet this,” he explained, “we have introduced a range of new yarns into our residential collections, including a super-soft and eco-friendly bamboo blend, as well as amalgamating our contract-rated wool fibres into our popular Ultimo carpet range to provide

Today’s choice of fibres means that you can meet whatever your client’s brief requires! “Our clients are searching for that perfect carpet – one which stands out and has that luxury feel, but is also durable and affordable. That is the great thing about our product, it has the delicate aesthetic qualities of natural silk, yet it is also hard wearing,” said Steve Farrell of Sylka Carpets. “Clients are looking for a product that can be re-worked in a number of different settings. Our newest range Harmony offers nine plain shades and a further five subtle stripes, giving the opportunity to mix and match,” he said. “As a backdrop to neutral décor we have introduced something completely new – Carnival. It makes a fabulous choice for something different, but we will never move away from the trend for neutrals entirely.” Directionally dominating, stripes are still big news. “Stripes are a wonderful way of adding interest and personality to a room,” said Dawn Mallett, Marketing Manager for Crucial Trading. “Stripes are not just stylish, they are great for creating the illusion of space too; laying striped flooring vertically will make your space appear longer and the sense of space within a narrow area will increase if laid horizontally. “Stripes also work extremely well on stairs, hallways and landings,” Dawn added. “To turn your stairs into a real focal point, combine an attention-grabbing striped stair runner laid over a neutral broadloom.” Traditional design is making a comeback, however traditional patterns do not have to be confined to traditional spaces. “Our Timeless Collection fuses elements of traditional and contemporary design to create a transitional product to bridge the gap between the two distinct styles,” said Hayley Durrell, Designer at Loomah. “Contemporary geometric patterns are framed by opulent traditional borders. The overall look remains classical but the use of a subtle colour palette of soft greys and a splash of colour adds a contemporary edge.” So bold statement or subtle hint; in bamboo to synthetics, the wall to wall underfoot luxury of carpet will never be off trend!

ay back when, a staircase was just a means of getting from one floor to another, but now, even in smaller, more modest properties, the staircase is a work of art in its own right, making a great style statement as soon as you enter the house! And it’s no longer sufficient to use simply a cheap wood with the assumption you’ll be carpeting over the stairs – the treads themselves now are available in myriad beautiful materials, and the banisters and handrails are where you can really let your imagination run riot. “With staircases and balustrades the only true constraint on what can be achieved is our own imagination,” agreed EeStairs’ Creative Director, Cornelis van Vlastuin. “They are an opportunity to create an extraordinary feature whatever the environment; residential, retail, commercial or corporate. Because of their centrality within the building, both in functional and aesthetic terms, staircases can be one of the boldest architectural features of an interior used to provoke an emotional response.”

Balustrade systems in particular offer ideal flexibility when introducing individual style to a design. “Glass balustrades mean that the stringer can become the star of the show, a seamless, flowing structure that melts into the interior,” explained Cornelius. “A glass balustrade can also be used to blend original features such as exposed brick work, with contemporary engineering such as floating treads – a tread that is becoming increasingly popular throughout Europe.” “In the current economic climate, we are finding that our clients are increasingly

That is not to say we are going to see a jump in demand for traditional wooden staircases – rather the opposite, as consumers are now familiar with the concept of ‘designer’ staircases. The clever part about design is having the ability and insight to incorporate both traditional and
contemporary materials into a commission that withstands the test of time.” Mclane also notes that there seems to be a trend towards using bronze – also brass – for balustrades. “I would say that designers are shying away from stainless steel and opting for the more natural earthy materials,” he added. As well as natural materials, bespoke elements can add unique characteristics. “We are seeing an increasing trend toward commissioning quality, custom made

The beauty of this range is that it can be used to create a statement feature wall, or just a few tiles can be mixed with plain colours to create an equally stunning, yet more subtle, effect.” There are no ‘rules’ on home décor anymore, people are using tiles throughout the entire home now in areas where wallpaper would typically be used.

An Absolute Gem! In Spring 2013, the first results of gpstudio’s work with British luxury brand Asprey came to fruition with the re-design of the jewellery and watch departments in their flagship store on New Bond Street. Gregor Jackson, Managing Partner at gpstudio, tells us how they met the brief

sprey has been one of those brands I have always admired – not necessary for what it has done as a brand, but for its product; the product has always had craftsmanship at the core. Today, more than ever, the product remains true to its values of being exquisitely designed, crafted and totally beautiful – whether a leather tote bag, a glass decanter with stags head, or a woodland inspired piece of jewellery. The making of the product and connection with this process shapes its position as an emporium of luxury gifting.
with Asprey’s creative arm in New York to establish the parameters of the brief. This was a complex process, for a number of reasons. Asprey is a brand with an incredible heritage and craftsmanship – the UK version of Hermes – and a true super-luxury brand, rather than the mass luxury brands that we currently see over-exposed and springing up everywhere internationally. It was also under new dynamic ownership and leadership. This new leadership wanted to develop the product by working in collaboration with
The heritage of the brand and store also made this project incredibly prestigious. Being founded in 1781, the brand has long been a standard-bearer for British luxury goods across the globe. Asprey has been located in the New Bond Street store for over 200 years, and the store is truly one of the most recognised pieces of retail real estate in London – if not the world. It was very exciting to design such a space.
The soul and credibility of the brand was retained
We first met with the client a number of years ago. Initially this was a credentials presentation, but a fit with the brand was (I hope) evident – and certainly quickly established. At this stage, the brief itself was still being formalised so we worked closely

A detailed material palette was used leading designers including the likes of Shaun Leane, Philip Treacy and Katie Hillier. The aim was to create new contemporary product ranges while remaining true to the Asprey values, so it was against this backdrop that we were working on the brand positioning. To do this, we first had to explore the brand, what it stood for, and paint a picture of the future which aligned with their intended product and wider business plan. Only then could we drill down to what was appropriate for the brand’s refresh, which started with the New Bond Street store. Throughout the entire process our design solutions also needed to be transferable to their New York Madison Avenue store, as it was undergoing a similar refresh.
Lighting was inspired by the original Asprey antiques The goal of both these refreshes, working alongside the new product developments, was to consolidate the brand and provide the foundations which would articulate Asprey’s brand correctly and propel them on an international journey. We started by investigating the heritage of the brand jointly, as client creative team and
designer. We got excited about materials and finishes appropriate to the brand – and personally I got really excited visiting the Asprey top floor workshops. Here, men and women dressed in white coats stitch, emboss, beat, bash, chisel and polish the products. In my view, these behind-thescenes workshops are the epicentre of the brand.

This meant restoring original antique pieces, refurbishing elements of the Foster + Partners lead scheme of 2004, and introducing new fixtures and fittings for the whole of the Jewellery and Watch departments. gpstudio brought together three generations of fixtures fixtures, and had to integrate the newer elements in a way which retained the soul and credibility of the brand. The material palette was comprised of bronze metalwork detailing, timber veneer, glass, hand-embroidered carpets, leather stitch work and silk. All of these were inspired by references taken from the original Asprey antiques – with the added luxury of integrating modern LED lighting!
All of these were sampled and prototyped through the design process to smoothly bridge the gap between the heritage of the brand and its modern day conception. On site, the hardest issue was working around the numerous events and parties that Asprey plays host to throughout the calendar year. As these events are an important aspect of the brand DNA, the brief made it clear that we had to incorporate
these into our schedule. We had carefully calculate the site programming and phasing to work around them. And, this was achieved – the project was executed in phases and Asprey traded throughout, with the calendar of events proceeding as planned. The New Bond Street store is one of London’s most recognised pieces of retail real estate handmade rug with the jewellery fixtures and the ambient ceiling lighting. We spent four hours on-site with contractor Goodman Hichens, and lighting designers Office of [Light] to ensure perfection. Getting your sleeves rolled up and orchestrating the space as a team is always an enjoyable phase of any projects. Design and rod drawings are vital, but physically setting out the store on-site remains a fail-
safe process. The end result, which we still refer to internally as an eyewash – although for the brand it was much more than this – has proven itself a success. As well as a healthy increase in sales, the perception of the brand by both partners and customers has been very positive indeed. All of this gives the brand the confidence needed to march on with its intended business plan.
The most enjoyable moment of the project for me – and confirmation that we had got it right – was when, on handover, the client effortlessly closed the drawer of a jewellery cabinet. The weight and sound was emulative of closing the car door of a Rolls Royce. They smiled and sensed the inherent quality, the product was beautifully presented, and the surrounding design simply supported and evoked the values of the brand.

Fabric-inspired and coloured in a range of organic neutrals, nagoya will work with just about any accessory within a scheme. Small in scale, this stitch-effect linen print has a glimmer of pearl showing through to add subtle depth and class. Sometimes all an old favourite needs is a colour refresh to bring it bang up to date! muraspec’s design team have given metropolitan and Glacier a makeover, with a selection of new, soft neutrals. metropolitan brings the outside inside, with distressed natural stone effect, while Glacier uses a soft
metropolitan stippled texture to give depth to block colour. rounding off the set is new wallcovering Andesite. organic, neutral tones are still considered the main colour influence when selecting design for interiors. Andesite fits this brief well, with the added benefit of texture to bring depth to the design and entice the viewer to reach out and touch it. this volcanic rock texture combined with contrasting tip-printed colour is quite unique. this new collection of wallcoverings have been designed and manufactured by our
in-house team in Kent. As ever, these wallcoverings are CE and fire rated and come with EpDs.
