n upholstery, Westbridge are bringing Heirloom, a stately sofa, which harmoniously combines aged leather with striped seats and floral cushions – it is instant grandeur and luxury. In contrast Wade have Camden, a modern sofa in cool grey, which shouts funky 60s retro with wing backs, button backs and a smooth wooden base. Keeping with the grey theme is Charleston from Whitemeadow; with soft round edges and plump cushions it invites lounging. Another modern piece is Francesca from Ashley Manor, it has an off-white hue, with ebony feet, black cushions and straight arms. Its large studding makes it stand out from the norm, it is subtle attention grabbing at its best.

NEJ Stevenson bespoke bathroom cabinetry for an Eton Square property

in.HIS LIFE : 11

A Week In The Life Of Neil Stevenson There is no such thing as ‘typical’ week for Neil Stevenson, the founder of successful bespoke furniture company NEJ Stevenson. It can vary from giving lectures at KLC School of Design, meetings with interior designers to discuss projects, or site-visits in relation to his commissions for the Royal household. This aside, he still manages to find time to catch-up with his talented team in the workshop at his Warwickshire HQ or squeeze in a round of golf. N.E.J. Stevenson is an Industry Partner of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) and Neil was formerly their Industry Director. Monday Mondays tend to be my designated day for meetings. I like to make sure that everyone is in the office so that we can focus on plans for the week ahead. Today, I’m meeting with the directors of the business to discuss finances, current projects and recruitment opportunities. I’ll also be speaking with the sales and marketing team to make sure we’re hitting our targets. I eat my lunch in the garden with the rest of the team, have a chat and enjoy the nice weather we’re enjoying at the moment. Recently, our staff have been bringing in new family members too. Afterwards, I’m making accommodation arrangements for the England versus Scotland golf match, which will be taking place at Remedy Oak Gold Club near Bournemouth. I’m also preparing for the High Quality Residential (HQR) Summer Ball, which will be taking

place on 25th June at the Grosvenor Hotel in London. This includes creating a table plan and sending out tickets. Tuesday This morning, I’m at my home in Rugby, Warwickshire preparing for my lecture at KLC School of Design tomorrow. I’ll be speaking about how to specify joinery and selecting the right sub-contractor, and I need to make sure my notes and presentation slides are in order. It’s a great privilege to share my experience with a new generation of designers. Later in the day, I head to our HQ and take a walk around the workshop to find out what my staff are up to. I do this three times a day when I’m in as I like to keep in touch with them and have a full understanding of how the projects are going. At the moment, the team are creating a series

12 : in.HIS LIFE of bespoke whisky cases for Macallan. There’s also a project in the initial stages of planning for a lavish residential property on Gloucester Road, as well as a major project in Virginia Waters for Grangewood Construction, working alongside interior designers Elicyon, which was designed by V&A Architects. Wednesday Today, I’m up early to catch the train to London for the lecture at KLC. My lecture includes tips for creating a clear brief for furniture makers that demonstrates what a designer wants from a project and avoiding common errors in specifications. I attempt to guide designers in how to work effectively with sub-contractors, what information to provide and selecting the right company. The KLC student audience is really engaged and ask a lot of great questions. Afterwards, I give one-to-one sessions with all the students in attendance to help them with their final projects, as they are working towards their diplomas in Interior Design. This is always a really rewarding experience

Neil Stevenson at work in his studio as it gives me some great insights into potential design stars of the future, and I love seeing the innovative and creative designs they come up with.

In the evening, I head back to Rugby for the launch of Moriarty’s Café and Gallery for a Futures Unlocked event. Futures Unlocked is a fantastic organisation which provides great opportunities for ex-offenders to reintegrate into the local community and help break the cycle of offending. It was an excellent evening, filled with community spirit and delicious food and drink. Thursday Running a business of our size occasionally means that I have to spend time dealing with things that have nothing to do with furniture, but are nonetheless important. Today, we’re meeting with our new pensions advisor about the new Workplace Pensions. Fortunately I have my wife, Fiona on hand to help. As the company’s Finance Director with a great range of business skills behind her from her previous life in engineering, today’s meeting goes exactly to plan

NEJ Stevenson project in the Marketing Suite at Lillie Square as she has already completed all the necessary work in order to understand the new requirements. I have just enough time to prepare a quotation for a small project and get it issued. After this, I head into the centre of Rugby for the unveiling of a community art project to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. As the only Royal Warrant Holder in the area, it was natural that we would sponsor the project. I could now do with heading home, but instead I head to the station to catch the

train to London for a lecture by sculptor Paul Day about his current work. The Artworkers’ Guild has a number of interesting lectures and as a trustee, I try to attend as many as possible. I sneak out during the Q&A in order to catch the 21.03 from Euston. The train affords me the luxury of reading the paper for an hour and I finally get home at 22.15. Friday On Friday, I’m in the office and chasing up potential leads for new work. I also start making plans for our monthly lunch event, which as usual will take place at Kensington Roof Gardens. It’s always a great opportunity

to have a chat with other industry contacts and indulge in the fantastic food and drink on offer, whilst taking in the incredible views over London. I check who will be attending this month and this gives me a great excuse to catch up with people I may not have heard from for a while. Once I’ve finished at work, I’m spending the evening as a guest at a concert at Church Lawford church to mark The Queen’s Birthday this weekend. The NEJ Stevenson team is in the process of designing some pieces for the church which is a great way to stay engaged and involved with our local community.

16 : in.HIS LIFE Saturday To kick start an exciting weekend, I’m playing as a guest of a friend in the Lennon Open at Rugby Golf Club. Golf is a passion of mine that I can share with Fiona, friends and clients, and it definitely brings out my competitive side!

Sunday This morning we skip breakfast at The Royal Automobile Club as we’re attending the Patron’s Lunch in The Mall to commemorate The Queen’s 90th Birthday. The event is a classic British ‘street party,’ the first of its kind ever to be held on The Mall.

After this, I catch a train to London with Fiona and my mother-in-law, to stay at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall before The Queen’s Birthday Celebrations begin tomorrow. I often stay here – it’s an absolute pleasure to soak up the opulent surroundings with my family, or escape to the marble-walled swimming pool and well-stocked library. After a meal in the Great Gallery, which I consider to be one of the best dining rooms in London, we get a reasonably early night.

The whole area is transformed into the country’s largest street party and we dine with 10,000 other invitees on tables that stretch along the entire length of The Mall, and tuck into a terrific, hamper-style picnic, which includes both lunch and afternoon tea. We also catch a glimpse of The Queen, who is dressed in bright pink, and The Duke of Edinburgh as they pass through The Mall in an open topped car. It’s certainly a fantastic way to round off the week. www.nejstevenson.co.uk

MARRIOTT HOTEL - PARK LANE LONDON A complete Mapei system has been installed at the Marriott Hotel in London’s renowned Park Lane. With a combination of traditional luxury and contemporary modern feel, the 5-star hotel renovation was implemented and led by main contractor, Superior Stone Ltd. The hotel features an elegant and refurbished lobby area, as well as a newly redesigned meeting space. Mapei products were specified throughout the interior from public areas, guest rooms and bathooms utilising Mapei’s extensive product range from screed, render and waterproofing, to various tile adhesives, grouts and silicone sealants. Mapei systems were utilised alongside Superior Stone’s marble stone slabs throughout the hotel. Mapei’s system was specified throughout a floor and wall surface area exceeding 6,000m2. It included high performance, fast-drying

screed - Mapei Topcem which reduces installation time to 24 hours for ceramic and two days for stone tiling. Following subfloor and wall preparation, low VOC adhesives and grout, Mapei Keraquick a fast-setting flexible S1 adhesive and Ultracolor Plus, a fast-setting and drying flexible grout, featuring antiefflorescence, water-repellent and anti-mould properties was specified alongside Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed, Primer S, Mapeband and Mapelastic AquaDefense. Keraquick and Latex Plus were combined, which forms an S2 adhesive to create more flexibility required for this installation. Mapei products were used to install all the marble in the public areas and all 152 rooms. This involved over 300 tonnes of marble and all 152 bathrooms were fully book matched. hilst we don’t think 1970s avocado will be coming back (although never say never), it would appear that white is no longer the automatic choice for suite colour! “There has been a shift in the colours and finishes being manufactured and chosen for shower trays and floors,” said Bette head of

marketing, Sven Rensinghoff. “Matt colours, coordinating with the bathroom flooring, are becoming very popular, because they can help to make the bathroom appear larger and create a stylish look.” Matt white is popular, and there is a high demand for various shades of grey and beige. Matt colours are also getting darker with browns to dark anthracites popular.

“40% of Bette customers choose matt shades for their shower tray or shower floor, and we are updating nine of our 22 matt colour choices to coordinate with the latest trends in tiles, natural stone and wooden floors,” explained Sven. “There is a growing demand for anti-slip surfaces on shower trays and floors. In the past some of these finishes have been highly visible and have detracted from the stylish look of the floor. However, new advances, like Bette‘s BetteAntislip Pro, are almost invisible, and this had led to an increase in demand for these options, which increase safety, especially for the less able and children.” Laufen are seeing a continued growth in the sales of washbasins and complementary furniture, as customers look to create a more streamlined look and feel to the bathroom space. “For many consumers, a key area is to make the most of the bathroom space and tackle the lack of it, by creating a spa-like and clutter-free area,” said Joanne Langton, Marketing Manager for Laufen. “Laufen’s Val collection offers a selection of timeless washbasins popular with our customers, and is made from the innovative Saphir Keramik material, which complements the Space furniture for a minimalistic approach.

“Another key concern for consumers is hygiene, with rimless WCs proving

20 : in.VOGUE extremely popular, such as our Pro S and Kartell models.” Georgina Spencer, Head of Marketing for Roca Group(UK), agrees. “As consumers look towards lowmaintenance cleaning and more hygienic products that will enhance their user experience, we are seeing an increase in demand for innovative features in the bathroom,” she said. “With a product like the Inspira rimless WC, not only does it offer ease of cleaning but it also leaves nowhere for dirt or germs to linger. Additionally, the seats and covers of this range display the latest innovations and are manufactured with SUPRALIT®, the new exclusive resin registered by Roca, which is more durable, more hygienic, and easier to clean.” Bathroom brand Thirty6 has rearticulated the bathroom with fresh thinking from design company Bluefrog. “The result is MyHome™, the first installment of a new range made for typical British bathroom spaces that will allow homeowners to stamp a unique identity in the one room where privacy is assured,” Roger Cooper, Director for Thirty6, told us. “MyHome™ has been designed to make the room feel more spacious whatever the size.” Photographing bathrooms for brochures or TV requires studio sets far larger than the usual British bathroom. In order to achieve the best from the set design, the physical spaces used never reflect real bathrooms. “However, meeting a customer’s expectations in a small space can be achieved by innovative product design and clever room planning,” said Roger.

MyHome from Thirty6 is designed to make any room feel more spacious Bathroom furniture, be it modular or fitted, is now an essential part of any bathroom specification as it brings together all elements of the bathroom in a stylish and practical way. “The sector is experiencing good growth at present and there are many design-led styles to choose from for both compact and family-sized bathrooms, en-suites and cloakrooms,” explained Kimberley Cooper, Head of Multichannel Marketing, PJH. “It’s now becoming easier to create personalised bathroom spaces by mixing and matching the many bathroom furniture options around bathroom ceramics, such as the ‘step’ system as featured in the Carino modular range from Moods.” Designers can create individual looks, even in the smallest of bathrooms, by combining clever unit pieces in a style to match consumer aspirations. Bathroom cabinetry is now so versatile, and many ranges include coordinated accessories to complete the look, such as linen units, mirrors and

The Carino modular range from Moods features its ‘step’ system splashbacks. Design and storage solutions continue to evolve at a steady pace. “Internal storage options, such as tidy drawer systems; high specification cabinet fittings, such as soft-close doors; and practical design features, such as open shelving and vanity shelves, are becoming the norm and this trend is only set to grow,” added Kimberley. “Beautiful finishes, such as the high gloss cashmere option within our Carino range, are very popular as more earthy and natural colour schemes are added into the equation, joining the still popular white gloss lacquered finish.”

oatswain Lighting (www. boatswainlighting.co.uk) designs and manufactures elegant porcelain lighting features which are timeless in their appearance and equally appropriate in both classic and contemporary environments. “Inspiration comes from the beauty and natural qualities of translucent porcelain, which lends itself to the creativity of the design team to produce stunning and unique pieces of bespoke lighting,” explained Sue Myall, Sales & Marketing Co-Ordinator. “By pushing the boundaries of this ancient material and incorporating it with modern design and lighting technologies, it draws together the traditional and the contemporary.” Boatswain Lighting continue to establish this regal material in the realm of classic decorative lighting.

Boatswain Lighting’s Butterfly Ball Chandelier design service, to both private clients and trade. “We are seeing an increasing interest from clients who are looking for a softer aesthetic rather than the trend for a harder more industrial look. They are looking for more sculptural features with organic forms more akin to nature.” Emily Russell, Merchandising Director of Litecraft Group (www.litecraft.co.uk), recommends adding an industrial flair to your decor with Litecraft’s LED Light bulbs. “Our 6 Watt LED Globe Light Bulb not only is very modern – and retro – but the LED light

bulbs Litecraft offer are fully dimmable.” The LED light bulb also features the Herringbone Braided cable in black and white that can add a retro pop for a modern vibrant look. “Our unique diamond shape bulb features a sublime red braided cable, and would create great contrast against darker tones,” Emily added. Trending at the Lighting Store (www. lightingstoredirect.co.uk) are golds and muted metallics, and they are selling a lot of crystal chandeliers to overseas buyers.

“Individual pieces are high on people’s shopping lists,” explained Caroline Ratner, “like glass Murano droplets, and unusual pieces to hang over tables. Customers are looking for something different – rather than the standard generic lighting flooding the internet! We can supply bespoke pieces from Italy and Spain which make a statement. “Over-the-table statement lighting is very popular as well. The metals are more muted, and gold seems to have taken over copper, but copper is still very popular.” When famed Liverpool Football Club player Jamie Carragher and his wife Nicola

24 : in.VOGUE decided it was time to refresh the interior design of the home which they’d had built ten years ago in Blundellsands, they turned to Chantelle Lighting (www. chantellelighting.co.uk). With a vast entrance hallway, Nicola wanted to find a chandelier which would become a dramatic focal point of their sweeping staircase. She had a picture of the lighting she wanted in her head, but just couldn’t find something exactly right. “I had a clear idea of what I wanted and I liked certain elements of various lights but each had something missing,” she explained. “I wondered if these elements could be brought together to create one light that was not only glamorous but unique.” Chantelle Lighting had been previously recommended to her for her living room lighting, so she decided to give them a call to see if they could help get the vision

from her head on to paper. Chantelle’s managing director Anthony Holly and project manager Lauren Holly visited Nicola to look through some design options, and, with a clear understanding of her requirements, put together 3D CAD drawings to show her. “They were amazing,” said Nicola. “They paid attention to every detail from the CAD drawing right through to hanging the chandelier and throughout they friendly, very professional and easy to deal with. As a high profile couple you have to be careful about who you let in to your home and we both felt very comfortable with Anthony, Lauren and their chandelier fitters being in the house. “Anthony even suggested that they customise a light fitting for our outer entrance area, which I had bought from a shop but wasn’t really happy with. He took it back to the factory, had it distressed and brought it back for fitting, and I couldn’t happier with the result.”

The result is a 12ft draping chandelier made up of some 50,000 crystals. “The chandelier really does give you the wow factor and guests are bowled over when they walk in,” Nicola said. “Usually you have to look up to see the light in a room, but this hangs so low you see the bottom first and then continue to enjoy the light as you move up the staircase!”

26 : in.BRIEF

From Woe To Wow BIID Registered Interior DesignerÂŽ Giulia Adams has worked as a designer for over 20 years, providing bespoke interior design services in London and the South West for both residential design and commercial interiors. After studying Art History and English at University College London and completing an MA in Interior Design at the Royal College of Art, Giulia work for several well respected architects and designers before setting up her own practice, Giulia Adams Interiors, in 2007.

L

ast year I was contracted by a busy working mother to design the refurbishment of her six bedroom house in Roehampton, London. Originally built by a developer in the early 2000s, the property had impressive large, airy rooms, but with basic finishes and no personality.

The brief was based on a stylish contemporary renovation to create suitable areas for the family, their three children, and a large family dog, as well as sophisticated areas for adult entertaining. In total, the project included 200m2 of reception rooms, six bathrooms, and an impressive double height entrance hall with a double

28 : in.BRIEF staircase which linked all the spaces and would be a focal point of the new scheme.

A bespoke L shaped sofa from Greengate creates a cosy place

I always start each project by sketching out a measured plan to ensure the spaces will flow. Here, I can easily experiment with different furniture arrangements and can solve any issues that need to be addressed. In this project I had to overcome the large amount of oak flooring, doors and stairs, which the client disliked. I researched various finishes and stains and found a Mylands Pale Slate hard wax oil for the floor boards to create a softer more muted background colour. The doors were painted in Little Greene Mirage II with the skirtings and architraves in a more subtle shade, Whisper. To add contrast, I dramatised the double staircase with a velvet purple carpet runner. This scheme heavily reduced the amount of oak, with the only visible trace left on the balustrade. To ensure all the colours and materials work well together I create a palette of materials, fabrics and finishes and gradually edit this. Simultaneously, I work on pencil perspective sketches, where I position the furniture and try out different items. When I am happy with the effect, I ink these up and paint them in watercolour. These form the focus of my presentation boards and are very useful to the client who can immediately grasp the concept of the proposed design. On this project I worked closely with a decorative artist, Pierre Clement of Clement Interiors (www.clementinteriors.co.uk), to create wall finishes for the three main reception rooms. The grasscloth wallpaper I suggested for the sitting room was too expensive, so he

created a linen effect paint finish in burnt umber and rose which was warm and subtle, working well in daylight and glowing softly under artificial light. Contrast was added by the dark purple Trevira curtains from Designers Guild with a taupe border, hung on bronze poles made by Fabricant. For the kitchen and family room, he made a textured scuffed burnt umber effect which

created an informal and fresh backdrop for the cyan Chenille sofa and blue Ikat curtain fabrics from Osborne and Little. Finally, the vast double height hall needed warmth and texture. Here Pierre used a burnt umber colourwash with a Mirage II undercoat. By using artists’ paints to combine warm and cool colours, he created effects that were unique and inimitable.

his multifunctional furniture solution can be used to create a private space to relax, or use with another sofa to form a meeting area. The high-sided upholstery also provides sound dampening and a sense of enclosed space for team meetings or a work base for the day, suitable for collaborative and touchdown areas. Julio is a soft seating range comprising free standing and modular upholstered elements. Designed for the office, hospitality, leisure

and contract markets, Julio has a crisp geometric aesthetic which is accentuated by the chamfered arm detail. Available in low-back and high-back options, Julio can be arranged into a variety of configurations and installations. The upholstery has been designed to provide a versatile seating system for architects and designers to create various fabric combinations and colourways.

A timber leg frame has been recently added to the design to move the seating range into the hotel environment, and the chrome rod leg gives the seating a more contemporary feel for the modern hotel interior. Coffee tables complement the soft seating and are available in different sizes and top finishes. The range was designed by Jason Lansdale.

The upstairs bathrooms each have a different mosaics The large hall invited grand gestures so the end wall was papered in a large patterned Cole & Son wallpaper, Cocoa, portraying the beanstalks climbing up from the ground to the top floor. The front wall has five sash windows flooding the room with natural light. To provide privacy we hung the windows with beige linen banners which also helps to filter the light if required. Motorised roman blinds were installed by my curtain maker in a luxurious Decortex mauve silk to break up the wall. I also used bold pattern in the circular ‘Knot’

rug from Kappa Lambda. The purple and taupe colours worked well with the existing limestone floor. With space for a chandelier, I sketched out an idea for a cascade of coloured glass discs. In consultation with Sans Souci, we developed the product and had it manufactured in the Czech Republic. Sans Souci provided technical oversight and installed the finished piece in a professional manner. The result was 3m long suspended discs of handmade glass in purple, violet, amber and gold, hanging from a bronze

coloured disc with four downlights. Without doubt this is my favourite design element of the project. The effect it created was just as I had imagined and the client was so thrilled with it. It can be seen as you descend the stairs and come in through the front door, acting as a beautiful focal point. The use of coloured glass continues in the hand-made mosaics from Ann Sacks that appear in the cloakroom as a feature wall. The upstairs bathrooms each have a different colour and size of mosaic for

The colour palette of purples and golds also stretches to include blues which were used in the kitchen and conservatory. Handmade glass pendants in purple and slate grey from Curiousa & Curiousa were installed over the island unit and dining table. Large rooms require large furniture so I commissioned a bespoke L shaped sofa from Greengate for the family room, plus a corner seat and ottoman, to create a cosy place for the family to gather. The sitting room has a large L shaped Marea sofa from Arketipo, which is lower and more urbane. The look is completed with black glass coffee tables at each end and shaggy Lustre rugs from Jacaranda. The concept for the designs began in May 2015 and was completed by November. Contractors CA Projects Ltd (www.caprojects. net) project managed the whole scheme, supplied all joinery, installed the AV and

electrics and completed the decorating. I supplied all the furniture, fittings, curtains and lights. Having worked on many projects together we have built a strong working relationship with effective communication. By planning the programme together and keeping an eye on costs throughout, the client is assured that the project will run smoothly without needing to get involved. Unfortunately, my available spend for decorative furnishings was cut during the project to accommodate the cost of AV installations. However, this had no detrimental effect on the project as I managed to replace some items with cheaper substitutes – without compromising on style. This allowed me to keep essential elements of the scheme and the big ‘wow’ factor pieces! www.gainteriors.com

‘Interior Identities’ A Success On Thursday 16th June, the BIID hosted its fifth annual conference, entitled ‘Interior Identities,’ at the Royal Geographical Society’s HQ in London.

T

he conference attracted over 250 attendees from across the design spectrum, including BIID members, design professionals, academics, design students and media.

This year’s programme was themed around concepts of identity in interior design. The talks explored the speakers’ perceptions of ‘interior identities’ and highlighted a plethora of inspiring concepts, creative ideas and contrasting perspectives. Charles Leon opened the conference by exploring the starting point of all identities, the human mind, and particularly the designer’s mind and discussed how we

define identity and its modern consequence, the ‘brand.’ He posed the question “Is creativity a universal human trait or do designers use their minds differently?” The day concluded with a thought-provoking panel debate on ‘The Interior Designer’s Dilemma: Reverence vs Reinvention.’ Catherine Croft, Graeme Brooker and James Dilley participated in a lively discussion using their diverse personal experiences and opinions to address several key questions – such as discussing whether the responsibility to respect the design intention of the creator of a building should impact the creativity of a designer. The audience also had the chance to share their opinions

and pose questions to the speakers during a compelling Q&A session after the talk. Sponsors of this year’s BIID Conference included headline sponsor and leading lighting manufacturer The Urban Electric Company, as well as Selectaglaze, UK Hide, Trade at Houseology, Hamilton Litestat, Iglu Cold System, Junckers, and Roca. All sponsors exhibited their brands for conference attendees to visit throughout the day. www.biid.org.uk

New President For BIID As part of its AGM held at The Royal Geographic Society, London in June, the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) revealed the winners of its two prestigious Institute awards, and officially welcomed their new President.

E

ach year members of the BIID nominate a fellow member who has particularly excelled in three key criteria; excellence in interior design practice, a contribution to the development of the Institute,

and a commitment to the wider field of design education. The awards committee unanimously agreed that the winner of this year’s award is Noriko Sawayama, who has excelled in all three areas.

Noriko is the founder of NSDA (Noriko Sawayama Design & Associates Ltd), a London-based interior design practice. Noriko divides her time between the UK and Japan and has had an accomplished career as an interior designer, working on a huge variety of international projects, both residential and commercial. The CPD Award recognises the member who has far exceeded the minimum requirement and has gained the most CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points in that year. Savana Al Khudhairi of Savana Interior Design Studio was announced as the recipient of the award for gaining 113 points. The AGM also marked the official hand-over to new BIID President Susie Rumbold, who takes over from Daniel Hopwood. Susie is a longstanding member of the Institute and worked on the Membership Committee for four years until her appointment as CPD Director in 2014.

The AGM also provided BIID members with the chance to learn about the institute’s progress over the past twelve months, as well as voting in new directors, Lindsey Rendall and Gilly Craft. www.biid.org.uk
