Welcome to the June issue of in.Design magazine!
By the time this issue lands on your desk we’ll have recovered from the May Design series and Clerkenwell Design Week – just in time to gear up for new Designers! Our show preview is supplemented by a great chat with some of design’s rising stars in our in.sight feature where four of the One Year On participants share their experiences with us.
interesting news from the BiiD this month – two more honorary fellows have been announced; Deyan sudjic, the Director of the Design Museum, and Angela Brady, President of RiBA. And to follow their 2013 BiiD Annual Conference, “Design invention: Art and science Collide” at RiBA HQ in June they’ll be holding an evening summer party at Republic of Fritz Hansen – even more reasons to join the BiiD!
Lucia Caballero shows us some of her current projects as she shares a week in.Her Life, look out for some gorgeous effects with a mirrored chimney breast! And the mirror theme is repeated in our glass in Design in.Vogue feature, where antique glass is used as a kitchen splashback to fabulous effect.
The Highbullen Hotel in Devon is the setting for in.Brief when Carly gordon, Assistant Manager with Rooms-service by Park grove Design, describes how the lovely bedroom designs were created.
Don’t forget – some, if not all, of the in.Design team are at nearly every design exhibition and conference – drop us a line if you’re organising an event, we’d love to hear from you!
Hope you have a great – and sunny – month.

New Designers 2013: Preview Now celebrating its 28th edition, New Designers 2013 will bring together over 3,000 of the UK’s most talented and innovative design graduates, all under one roof at London’s Business Design Centre
N
ew Designers is an essential event for those who wish to see iconic designs of the future before they hit the high street, buy original design, commission work, or meet and recruit the design world’s rising stars. The exhibition presents examples of outstanding graduate design across a host of creative disciplines, and this year will incorporate motion arts for the first time. Taking place over two weeks, New Designers is divided into two parts and covers eight distinct design zones: Part 1, running from 26 to 29 June, brings together graduates from the top design courses in contemporary applied art and ceramics and glass, alongside fashion, textiles and accessories and jewellery and precious metalwork. Part 2, running from 3 to 6 July, focuses on furniture and product design, visual communications and spatial design – and for the first time, Prime Cuts, a new feature to the event that brings together specialist
Leigh Cameron’s ‘Bowl’ motion arts disciplines, including film, video and costume design. One Year On, this year curated by designer Jethro Macey, is always a highly anticipated element of New Designers; showcasing a selected group of around 50 emerging designers over both weeks who are in their first year of business. The designers are selected for their entrepreneurial flair and the exceptional quality of their work.
And turn to page 24 of this issue where we chat with some of the designers to feature in One Year On!

Art & Science Collide At BIID Conference! The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced further details of its annual conference, entitled “Design Invention: Art and Science Collide” taking place at RIBA’s London HQ, Portland Place, London, on Thursday 27th June 2013
T
his year’s event will explore the synergy between art and science and discover how new technology and materials are playing an increasingly important role in the work of interior designers today. The influential line-up of speakers includes Ab Rogers, Professor Penny Sparke, Jason Bruges and Josef Hargrave as well as a round table discussion, chaired by Aidan Walker with panellists, including Daniel Charny, Helen Storey and Sue Timney. Ab Rogers, the globally renowned interior designer and BIID member, will use his experience and insights to explore how science and technology are changing interior design practice. Professor Penny Sparke will examine some of the ground-breaking changes in design, driven by materials and manufacturing innovation in her presentation which offers an historical perspective on the collision between art and science. Jason Bruges founder of Jason Bruges Studio will be sharing his thoughts on how technology impacts upon the creative process in his presentation. Josef Hargrave will be looking at where the building and interior design industries are heading in
the future with his talk. Josef is a Senior Foresight and Innovation Consultant at Arup, a world-leading firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists making a positive difference in the world. As part of the conference Aidan Walker will chair a special debate, featuring Daniel Charny, Professor Helen Storey and BIID President, Sue Timney, which will look at design craft and ask how compatible such traditional skills might be and how they might change in the environment we work
in today. The conference will also include the presentation of this year’s BIID Honorary Fellowships to Thomas Heatherwick, Sir James Dyson, Angela Brady and Deyan Sudjic. Tickets for “Design Invention: Art and Science Collide” can now be purchased online at http://www.biid.org.uk/ designinvention.php where members and non-members can also find out more about the event.

Joining Sir James Dyson and Thomas Heatherwick to receive the prestigious BIID honour is Deyan Sudjic, the Director of the Design Museum, and Angela Brady, President of the RIBA
“T
he Honorary Fellowships are incredibly important to the Institute,” says Sue Timney, BIID President. “They provide an opportunity to recognise those who have inspired and influenced designers today. Deyan and Angela deserve recognition for the visionary leadership, promotion and encouragement of design excellence which they provide in their respective fields. We are delighted to confer these Honorary Fellowships in recognition of these achievements alongside those of Thomas Heatherwick and Sir James Dyson.” Deyan Sudjic became Director of the Design Museum in 2006, and with an engaging exhibition programme he has placed design at the forefront of the cultural and learning agenda. In 2014 the Design Museum will relocate to new premises at the former Commonwealth Institute in West London. This new Design Museum with interiors designed by John Pawson will
be three times the size of its current home and will create a showcase for its world-class collection, and greatly expand its education and public events programme.

A Week In The Life Of Lucia Caballero
Lucia Caballero studied Interior Architecture at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa. After spending five years as head interior designer at a Chelsea-based property development company, Lucia established Caballero in 2008 with her husband Hugh
Monday As our practice continues to grow in size, it has become increasingly evident that Monday morning meetings are key to setting up the week ahead. So at 8:45am i meet with my design team at “Caballero HQ in Chelsea Harbour. After our team meeting i review the inevitable emails and messages. One message is an enquiry from a prospective client with a house on Grosvenor Crescent in Belgravia. i promptly return the call and schedule a meeting for Thursday. With the most urgent of my messages dealt with i leave the office with one of our senior designers to attend a client meeting about joinery proposals for their project. The client is a residential developer and the project is a duplex penthouse within a listing building overlooking the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. Next stop; Birgit israel, to see in person an antique desk that we instantly reserved based upon an email image. We have been looking for just the right feature table for a show apartment and fortunately the table is even more beautiful in the flesh! Back to the office, to meet a client to discuss designing their first floor apartment in eaton Square. We are planning to redesign their apartment there to a similar style and finish as we did for their home in Harrogate. Tuesday Larger projects can often involve a design team of 10 different practices from mechanical and engineering through to landscape design, so it is vital that there are regular coordination meetings and this Tuesday is one of those weekly meetings. 55 ebury Street is a redevelopment of 50 apartments we have been undertaking for the last year and a half. We are now discussing the second phase with the client

and walking through 16 apartments to see if our new floor plan proposals will be given the go ahead. (They were!) After our meeting i head off to Sloane Street to meet a polished plaster supplier to see an example of their brand new finish which is displayed in the new Louis Vuitton
showroom. We talk about the design we had discussed previously. it was very useful to see the finish in the flesh and it gave me a new idea for our design. After my meeting i pop into Hermes right next door to see if they have a complementary tea set to match our already chosen dinner set for a luxury show home in Hampstead.
As i have not been to Sloane Street in a few months i also popped in to Gucci where i look at some of their beautiful shop details to find some inspiration for a large dressing room we are designing for our Albert Hall Mansions project. i feel the centre of the dressing room needs a focal point and i want this to have the detail of a high

Dramatic monochrome offsets sunshine yellow end luxury shop with glass top and bronze inlay detail and high gloss lacquered timber drawers. i then head off for an afternoon tea at the new Thompson Hotel which gives me some alone time to check on my emails whilst appreciating the hotel’s fine design features. One email is from our receptionist to call a client that we previously designed a night club for in Mayfair. He wants me to visit his home close to Hyde Park to meet his builder
to discuss the space. i ask him to forward me some floor plans so i can look over these which will make the meeting more productive. After that meeting, i head home to do my daily Tracy Anderson workout and have an early night. Wednesday i arrive at the office and have a quick chat with one of our designers about a client meeting; we have a 3:30pm meeting today for a house in Bayswater. This is the first
site meeting with the engineer, architect and client and we have quite a few queries already to sort out to make our proposals into reality. it’s then back to the office to sketch up a bathroom layout and idea that one of our designers was working on. We tweak a few things and send the layout to the client for approval. i then log in for a scheduled Skype meeting with a client to discuss a luxury spa and game lodge in Kenya that we are

We are currently finalising the details of the private cinema room and a beauty room which has a pedicure and hair dressing station! After my meeting i head down to the Design Centre to look for some fabrics and wallpapers for the show apartments we are currently furnishing in ebury Street. While i am in the harbour i pop over to Wired lighting design to approve some of the rock crystal samples for a bespoke chandelier we designed for our project in Belgravia. i approve a lovely smoked colour to go with the bronzy gold framework of the chandelier. Back to the office to meet with our swimming pool manufacturer and architects for our Hampstead house. We go through our new proposals and discuss the possibilities of having a contemporary fireplace next to the swimming pool clad with a split face slate, instead of the waterfall we previously proposed. i have found a small black mosaic that is deeper than a standard mosaic, as we found with a normal black mosaic after a year or so when some of the grout wears away the white adhesive starts showing, which is a terrible fault and will spoil our design. As our client has requested TVs in all the rooms we have designed switched glass panels either side of the fire place wall which will reveal a projected TV design.

One Year On... New Designers is a great showcase of new design talent! We speak to Brittany Delany, Hugh Leader-Williams, Leigh Cameron and Sian Elin about their achievements and plans for the future
What made you choose design as your career? Brittany: My main goal has always been to do a job that i enjoy. Whilst at school my work experience placement was with a photographer whose passion for his job meant that going to work was always an enjoyable experience.
Art & Design was my favourite subject throughout my education and after completing a foundation course i chose to study BA (hons) Decorative Arts at Nottingham trent University. i enjoy the creativity and freedom that design provides and i feel like it is more than just a career, it is also my passion.
in.Sight : 25 Hugh: it took me a while to really know what i wanted to do, but i have always been very curious, wanting to know how things work or why things are done in a certain way. it was really a couple of teachers that turned me onto design, first at school during gCSEs and A level. When i left school i looked at product design degrees, but none of them really seemed like the right fit for me. i went to do an art foundation course, which turned out to be one of the best decisions i have made. i was lucky to have another really passionate tutor, who was trained as an artist, rather than a designer, and he encouraged me look at things in a very different way. it opened my eyes to a completely different world of design to what is taught in schools. Leigh: i remember vividly when i was young, visiting a graphic design studio in London. it was inspiring, full of magic markers and layout pads. it was a novelty for me to think it was possible to make a living from drawing on your imagination. i studied Product Design at university, but struggled with the academic side of things due to undiagnosed dyslexia. i decided i needed experience and so began to develop my skills as a joiner and cabinetmaker. After 15 years, i found myself living in France and was frustrated with the work i had ended up doing. i felt i had more to give, but lacked the confidence. this led to me applying for an MA. Sian: For as long as i can remember, i have been creative – my Mum always encouraged us to sit down and make and draw things. i’m very interested in illustration, pattern, and colour – i see the world in this way, and want to reproduce and capture it. it just

Sian Elin Working in a corporate environment also gave me great experience in running my own business – to be disciplined and work to deadlines, deal with suppliers, and run large budgets.
Sian Elin: Peacocks lifestyle seems to be the way my brain operates, so there really was nothing i could do about it… How do you feel formal training honed your skills? Sian: i studied typography & graphic Communication at the University of Reading – which was quite a specialised course,
focussing on book design. the course was half practical and half academic and enabled me to write analytically, about history of design and print. this led to my five year career as a children’s book designer in book publishing for Penguin and Oxford University Press. Working at both of these worldrenowned companies was great training – they instilled a love of pattern and colour, attention to detail, and a clarity in design.
Brittany: My university course allowed me to experiment with a number of materials before specialising in ceramics. i was able to learn technical skills and processes relating to the material and experiment with how i could manipulate these in my own unique way. the facilities at my university meant that i could thoroughly explore ceramics and all of the processes involved in production and decoration. As part of my course i undertook a Live trading module which was commercially focused and involved producing a business plan and launching a product into a retail environment. As a group we also opened a pop-up shop stocking products from local artists and graduates. From this i gained

Brittany Delany: Collection of vessels experience of selling my products in the market. the production of a detailed business plan meant that setting up my business was straightforward as i had already done much of the research needed. Hugh: My training, at art college and during my degree, was not terribly focused on delivering a concrete set of skills, which at times was a little unnerving. Both courses really focused on making students develop an individual philosophy, a particular way of looking at things. there was a real emphasis on finding things out through doing, and experimenting with materials and techniques to develop more than a theoretical understanding of how they work.
i think this has stopped me from over complicating things and lead me to design simpler products that make better and more thoughtful use of materials. Leigh: the MA course at Central Saint Martin’s gave me confidence and pushed me outside of my comfort zone; challenged me to imagine the unimaginable. Above all it gave me time to research and develop my own design thinking and the opportunities to test them out; working on a variety of external projects with industry partners. Learning to evaluate helped me to understand the processes necessary to make things happen.

Whilst Art School is an environment full of inspiring creative people, after a while it also helps you to understand what makes you different. What work placements most influenced your plans for the future? Leigh: i won a placement with Vivienne Westwood, but felt a little out of my depth. it was a different world to the one i was used to. to begin with, i’m not sure either party really knew what i was supposed to be doing – i arrived in the jewellery department having just completed my MA in furniture design! After a while i was given the opportunity to discuss my own work. immediately it was clear i had skills useful to the company and was given the task of designing and making a jewellery display for Paris Fashion week in 2012. Sian: i went straight into full-time employment after University, so didn’t complete any work placements – but the experience (in book design) definitely influenced my plans for the future, and led to me quitting my full-time job to set up my business. Brittany: Whilst at university i undertook a number of work placements with designermakers and learnt a lot about running a successful creative business. Clare gage creates textile inspired ceramics and graduated five years before i did. Working with her provided me with invaluable information on how to run a business, deal with customers, sell to the public and promote yourself in the industry. Clare still supports me now and is an inspiration to my business.
i also undertook a number of work placements at schools; teaching is something i would like to do alongside my practice in the future. Hugh: i haven’t really done many placements that are directly related to what i hope to do. i did have a one month placement at Lugo group Europe, a contract furnishing company who sponsored an award at New Designers last year. this was an interesting experience, as it gave me an insight into aspects of design that i haven’t dealt with as much. i learned a lot about the commercial considerations and choices that have to be made behind the scenes in design. this isn’t something that i had really appreciated before when looking at why designers had made certain decisions in their work.
the experience has made me think a bit more deeply about the commercial pressures involved in design. So what’s next? Hugh: i am working hard to set up my own design studio with the help of Loughborough University’s business incubator scheme, which is providing me with investment and business coaching. it has been going well so far, my first range of furniture is set to launch with Made.com in July, and i am busy designing a new collection of products to launch this summer at New Designers One Year On. i am passionate about producing simple, useful products that really reflect my love of materials and design. i am always looking to collaborate with other organisations that share similar values to me.

32 : in.Sight Leigh: i’m committed to pushing boundaries and perceptions of concrete. Currently i’m developing new work, which includes furniture, bowls and jewellery. i’m the co-founder of the Concrete Foundation, which is a collective resource for creative concrete innovation; offering a manufacturing and consulting facility, working on a variety of scales and projects. it offers the opportunity to collaborate with other disciplines, which allows me to continually challenge myself and learn. Sian: At the moment, i am looking into developing my product range into other kitchen accessories. in addition i am developing new designs to complement my existing ones – with a foot firmly in the West, but also looking to the East for inspiration. this year i am exhibiting at New Designers, then tent in September, and home in January 2014. i have also started doing some interior stylist work for photoshoots, and hope to do quite a bit more of that in the future. Brittany: i set up my studio and business in October 2012 and i am currently selling my products through galleries, craft fairs and trade fairs across the country. i am continuing to produce my original porcelain tableware whilst working on new designs. i have been invited to attend New Designers: One Year On, this will be a great opportunity for me to launch my new range of products. i have also applied for a number of other events across the country and will be exhibiting at Lustre in Nottingham in November. i hope that my business will continue to grow over the coming months; it has been a very enjoyable experience so far and i hope for this to continue.

Raise Your Glass
The beauty of glass takes many forms; Juliet Davies looks at some of the ways it can be utilised to enhance and enchant
D
ecorative and architectural glass is increasing in popularity every day. Whether stained, broken and re-formed, mirrored, etched, or incorporating other materials for stunning effect, both indoor and outdoor projects are calling on glass for the finishing – if not formative – elements! Matthew Lloyd-Winder of Stained Glass Studio has recently developed what he believes is the world’s first kinetic threedimensional stained glass! It can be made as double or triple glazed sealed units. “Winderlite is an imaginative new concept in artistic glazing,” said Matthew, “it turns the ancient craft of stained glass into beautiful modern kinetic three-dimensional illuminated works of art, and is being bought enthusiastically by glass lovers wishing to bring light, colour and texture flooding into their homes.” Winderlite has been dubbed “Stained Glass on Steroids” says artist and inventor Matthew, who developed this captivating material recognising its natural beauty and ability to transform architectural spaces.

“It is fully compliant with current building regulations and can be specified anywhere glass is currently being used,” Matthew added. “It has a unique and magical quality about it as it transforms ordinary daylight into a kaleidoscope of colour projecting its dynamic effects around the house and lifting

the spirits. Each piece is designed and made to order and takes into account the tastes and wishes of the customer. Winderlite is so versatile it is also being commissioned as splash-backs, lighting and wall art, with its own built in LED light source making it ideal for brightening up basements and other gloomy areas.” Amanda Notarianni and Charlie Macpherson of Notarianni Glass have recently been moving their glass from the table to the wall. “Movement panels came about from wanting to achieve the tactile surface texture and light of Amanda’s installations,” explained Charlie. “With the development of LED lighting this evolved into a versatile idea that has been used in a variety of settings from private residences to cruise ships. “One of our most challenging projects was when we were asked to recreate a painting by an artist from Bora Bora in glass for a private motor yacht on a much larger scale than we were used to. The challenge of this led to us developing a whole new way of working which has coincided with our customers wanting more bespoke glass wall art. More and more companies seem to be wanting home grown talent and skill.” A recent, unusual request was to turn one of their 3D blown pieces, Ammonite, into a full size swimming pool. “Works are often used as a starting point in an interior but

Whilst glass can be fragile, some artists use this feature to brilliant effect. “Unlike most artists working in glass, I treat my material with a healthy disrespect!” said George Papadopoulos who is known for his stunning decorative panels in smashed glass. “Using a technique I developed whilst a student at the Royal College of Art, I break, then add colour and texture to sheets of industrial glass and then re-laminate them to make architectural-scale artworks that
look fragile, but are extremely durable.” George is represented by Saffron Interior Arts, a global collective of artists assembled by creative director Caroline Shamash, to provide interior designers with distinctive pieces of art and design for their projects. “Recently I was asked to create a triptych of panels for the inner courtyard of a prestige property and I was delighted when the owners also invited me to create a sculptural installation in their garden,” described George. “With its reflective qualities, glass is stunning when used outdoors and is

of 33 exclusive types of stones which can be embedded in laminated safety glass which in turn makes it strong, secure, low maintenance and safe. “This makes it an ideal product for various internal and external glass applications, such as partitioning, wall cladding, shower screens, kitchen splash backs, balustrades, glass doors and flooring,” said Craig. “These stone images are great for backlighting applications. Sublistyle is ideal for any environment that requires glass to be a decorative focal point. This technology is so versatile and is the future of glass!” Antique mirror glass is an increasingly popular choice for high-end residential and commercial projects as an alternative finish to plain mirror. James Stait, Director of Saligo Design considers that it offers much greater depth and variety, and its hand-finished quality (and price) gives it a real sense of opulence, whether in a modern or traditional setting.

40 : in.VOGUE “Antique mirror glass is most often used for wall panelling, either as a feature wall or lining a chimney-breast,” said James. “Cabinet-makers also incorporate antique mirror glass panels into furniture, such as table-tops and inserts in wardrobe doors. “As glass kitchen splashbacks gain popularity, we’re also seeing a surge of interest in antique mirror glass which has the benefit of hiding splash-marks better, so that they look cleaner for longer. As we use traditional surface-silvering techniques, we can toughen the glass before it is silvered, antiqued and sealed. In addition, we have recently developed some colour-based antique mirror glass styles as part of our range.” A lot of the glass design Daedalian Glass manufactures is for architects and interior designers in the high end residential and hospitality. “We offer a wide range of glass design finishes from etched, laminated, printed, fused, cast, kiln formed and UV bonded,” said Joe Walmsley, Daedalian Glass’ Business Development Manager. “In recent times there has been a clear move towards laminated fabrics and other interlayers, such as metal and organic materials, as well as printing on glass – the two offer a similar effect of turning glass in to another surface while achieving the advantageous characteristics of glass, but there are distinctly different properties for these two types of glass design.” Decorative, useful, tough, fragile – ultimately infinite in its applications, glass is an amazing material!

West Country Wow! Set in the North Devon countryside, Highbullen Hotel Golf and Country Club is under new ownership and undergoing a £1.2 million investment. Carly Gordon, Assistant Manager with Rooms-Service by Park Grove Design, describes how the bedroom designs were created
W
ork to restore the hotel to its former glory started towards the end of last year when rooms-Service by Park Grove Design was appointed to design the 18 ‘estate rooms’ which are located around the 125 acre hotel grounds. ranging from old cottages to lodges, the brief was to re-instate the character and interior personality back into the dated and tired spaces. The main challenge of the brief was the short predetermined completion date dictated by the re-launch and opening of the hotel, as well as the budget. it was important from the beginning not to let either of these challenges compromise the quality and final result. The first step was to review the existing layouts of the bedrooms and establish which rooms would benefit from a revised layout with plumbing and electrics moved accordingly. We were keen to keep this work to a minimum as we were aware of the consequential costs. in some rooms however it was essential to resolve the poor layout, for example, rooms where the beautiful country views were not being optimised with the bed and armchair positions orientated away from the windows! There were also instances where the guest’s first
impression of the room could be greatly improved by shifting the furniture positions to create focal points as you enter the room. We also needed to consider the end photographs of the bedrooms which would be the key marketing tool for guest bookings, as well as help achieve our client’s desired room rate.

Oak beams frame the Bridal Suite it was established early on that it would be difficult to achieve 18 completely unique rooms while maintaining quality and price point. We were keen to steer away from the corporate look and chose to roll-out four different schemes by varying the soft furnishing and wall coverings combined with two different ranges of furniture. This meant the hotel could market the different types of rooms and appeal to wider
guest preferences. Procuring the best quality furniture for the budget became our next challenge. We were keen to work with British manufacturers to assure the quality of the pieces and turned to The Design Net and Jan Cavelle for the case goods. Having worked with both manufacturers previously on other projects, we were confident with

Designer’s Guild ‘Peacock flower’ features on large cushions the end product. Working together with the manufacturers we were able to specify furniture ranges which would withstand the robust requirements of the hotel market and yet retain their elegance. Working with the manufacturers directly also allowed for bespoke finishes to be achieved. The inspiration of each scheme was derived from the estate building itself; the architecture of the building and the proportions of the rooms. The first set of rooms, now called ‘Gardener’s row’, had relatively small proportions and overlooked the walled garden which inspired the botanical scheme. Sanderson’s ‘Grandiflora’ fabric was centred on large bed cushions with thick velvet stripe piping detail. The colour palette evolved from the cushion design with leaf green upholstery and gold curtains, balanced by the painted

Upholstered buttoned benches and dressing chairs were upholstered in a strong coloured dogtooth wool for added punch. The entrance corridor spaces were also re-vamped with sepia photographs of the Highbullen Hotel grounds blown up and put in oak frames as a gallery. A natural green carpet continued the botanical theme of the bedrooms, with new flush light fittings giving the corridor a smart indoor-outdoor feel. for ’Sportmen’s Lodge’ the cushions were switched to an antler design in reference to the traditional shooting events held at the estate. The addition of an earthy brown textured wallcovering as the backdrop to the bed instantly created a new scheme without having to re-source furnishings from the Gardener’s row scheme. The hotel was keen to market as a wedding venue, so we suggested turning the two impressive upstairs rooms into Bridal Suites. With original oak beams and high ceilings, a four poster bed draws the eye to the unique architectural features of the room. farrow & Ball’s Acanthus wallpaper with its soft and trailing leaf was the perfect design to accentuate the ceiling heights. As with the Sanderson fabric, we centred the feature design of the Designer’s Guild ‘Peacock flower’ fabric to large bed cushions. This inspired the soft teal and taupe colour palette. The clients were delighted with direction
