Welcome to the June issue of in.Design!
Following a stunning and successful Clerkenwell Design Week at the end of May, we still have some great events to look forward to. The end of June and beginning of July see new Designers returning to the Business Design Centre in islington; it’s a great opportunity to see new talent coming through. And in July the Manchester Furniture show, with over 150 exhibitors, is the place to be to spot new retailing trends for furnishings and accessories.

With a big serving of optimism, this month’s in.Vogue looks at Outdoor Furniture. Being able to get outside is such a pleasure, and our finds make it even more glorious!
Finally, Finishing Touch interior Design recently undertook the refurbishment of the Head Office of a charity, and in in.Brief nicola Burt tells us how it all came together.

A Week In The Life Of Constantina Tsoutsikou Constantina Tsoutsikou, Senior Associate at HBA London, manages the creative direction of the studio’s hospitality and residential interior design projects. She joined the practice 12 years ago and steadily progressed to design a number of award-winning projects around the globe. Constantina now oversees the team’s client relationships and, with no one week the same, her job requires a loosely structured schedule with lots of flexibility for spontaneous international travel. She must balance her business life and family time with her spouse and three daughters, seven-year-old twins and their nine-year-old big sister. Yet the unexpected nature of her job fascinates her; she loves her job and feeling passionate about a profession so inherently woven into her life. Monday Having taken the red-eye flight on Sunday, I start the week in Mumbai with numerous on- and off-site meetings for Piramal Aranya, an exclusive new residential landmark nestled amongst lush historic botanical gardens with stunning views of the Arabian Sea. They mostly take place in air-conditioned offices with the architects and project managers. It’s a long day and there are so many things to go through. Having my own driver who waits for me between meetings takes a little while to get used to – it feels like such a luxury! But for
my colleagues in Mumbai, it’s an everyday necessity they take for granted. Being on the ground and hands-on is an important part of what we do. We allow ‘open windows’ within our designs for unexpected finds. Our strategy is to define the key parameters for high-end luxury and then add finishing layers by incorporating local artefacts or adapting our designs to the skills of local artisans. India is a treasure trove, and this afternoon is an escape from the air conditioning

Podium lobby at the Piramal Aranya Residences to find talented regional craftspeople. I am thrilled to discover in the Byculla neighbourhood a timber workshop where we find an enormous, sustainably-sourced tree trunk for the sales pavilion bar. Each plank is an impressive three or four metres long and requires a few strong people to reposition so we can compare different qualities. After looking at several trunks, we finally find one with the right ‘character,’ the graining, texture, colouration, and – importantly – that will require as little intervention as possible as the aim of our interior concept is to create an immersion in nature. My next stop is in Colaba, the district teeming with design and antique shops. We meet with a rug supplier who shows me a bounty of hand-knotted designs from
Rajasthan and shares the time frame for making each bespoke carpet. We discuss how many knots one person can make in a day – the amount of meticulous work is fascinating. And then lastly, we assess marble and granite slabs at one of Mumbai’s largest stone yards. We have a long list of finishes to select, not only for the public areas but also for each style of apartment within the entire development. There are so many beautiful options! That evening we visit a furniture and art auction at the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, followed by a delicious dinner at the Asian restaurant in the Four Seasons hotel.
Tuesday My day is spent flying back to London, which is especially enjoyable since there’s no wi-fi or interruptions. It’s great being able to focus on work such as deciding which photographer we might use for the design shoot of our soon-to-complete Isrotel project, The Orient in Jerusalem, and consider some public area concepts for our two Rocco Forte commissions in Italy. It’s also a good time for trendspotting in my favourite design magazines like Wallpaper*, DAMN° and - of course – in.Design, and simply stare at the clouds while thinking about the future and pondering the big questions of life. Wednesday Back at my desk in our studio on Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill, I catch

I don’t have my Indian driver anymore, but it’s good to be back home and find my own way to meetings. I grab lunch with my colleagues Erica and Margarita to discuss one of our most recent commissions, the redesign and repositioning of a restaurant on New Quebec Street that is a celebrity hangout in Marylebone. As we tuck into salads from our sunny outdoor table at a café across the street, we consider the façade and debate options for bringing sparkle to the new concept. After our meal, we tour the site, taking on board potential site restrictions and gathering further inspiration for possible design approaches. We really cherish the opportunity to design a destination in Central London. Thursday Thursdays are usually my turn for my daughters’ school run, and then in the afternoon I take them to their swim classes. Usually I pop into the studio between the drop-off and pick-up; it’s always an actionpacked work day since I’m there for a shorter amount of time. But this week is different! In fact, it’s quite extraordinary. I fly to Paris where I’ve been invited to a gala, the launch of ege carpet’s Atelier collection by renowned fashion designer Monsieur Christian Lacroix.

I usually travel in comfortable clothes and love wearing flats or trainers, but today it’s my black velvet and leather Chanel heels I unpack as I remind myself that the dress code in Paris is always one notch up the ‘scale of chic’ versus London. We are whisked off to Salle Wagram, a beautiful 19th century ballroom and concert hall in the 17th arrondissement. The red carpet has been rolled out for us as well as journalists and photographers who have come to admire the collection. It’s quite impressive, considering the whimsical scenes and abstract patterns are printed onto carpets. The turnout is largely French, although I am pleased to find a few familiar faces from the hospitality industry, including fellow designers, luxury hotel operators, friends from Denmark and ex-colleagues from Dubai – plus I make some new friends, too. I am chuffed to get a moment with Monsieur Lacroix himself as he tells me how much he loves London and that he’ll be visiting soon! Friday On Fridays HBA London typically finishes around 1pm; it’s nice to start the weekend early when everything is on track. It’s a cherished tradition in our studio but one that also occasionally shifts when a project deadline requires overtime. However, this morning I awaken in Paris to the sound of church bells and have a few hours before returning home. We have breakfast at a café in the Bastille, then answer some emails and calls, including one from our client about their Luxury Collection project in Doha.

We have a couple of Parisian projects ready to kick off. One of them is a spectacular renovation of a boutique hotel near Place Vendôme, so I pop in to take a few snapshots and double-check some measurements, and then make sure to visit the boulangerie Maison Landemaine to pick up a dainty parcel of colourful macarons for my girls. On the way back to the hotel, the window of a small Diptyque boutique catches my eye and reminds me I’ve run out of perfume, so I pop in and get my favourite bottle of Philosykos. Life in London is so hectic that if I don’t do things on the spot, it may be weeks before I have a chance again! Plus I like the idea of remembering a trip through a special indulgence I take home. …And Relax… Whether the outdoor space is a tiny courtyard, a balcony, or an acre of glorious garden, it can always provide an enchanting place to enjoy the great British summer!
T
oday’s gardens, particularly in urban environments, have increasingly become an extra living room, so when it comes to choosing the right furniture and accessories such as sophisticated lighting systems, weatherproof rugs, outdoor heaters, or an outdoor kitchen, much attention is paid to craftsmanship and attention to detail. “One exciting emerging trend is retrodesign inspired outdoor furniture like our modular Riad lounge which we developed for the 2017 season,” Harrie van Valderen, Marketing & Sales Director at OASIQ (oasiq. com) told us. “Inspired by 1950’s French designer Mathieu Matégot, Riad’s perforated aluminium frames and soft, tactile
teak armrests combined with luxurious weatherproof cushions add a sophisticated yet light appearance to any outdoor space. “However, the ongoing trend for outdoor furniture remains woven, with soft manmade weather-resistant outdoor ropes in various thicknesses. The weave designs have recently become lighter and more transparent with a combination of different materials such as powder-coated aluminium, stainless steel and teak, sometimes also inspired by mid-20th century retro designs like our Sandur collection.” Sandur’s appeal lies in its sleek design which uses a unique open weave which reduces any contact with hard surfaces, making this

chair incredibly comfortable even without additional seating cushions. “The perfect companion for Sandur chairs are our Serac tables with their translucent, branched powder-coated aluminium frames,” added Harrie. In previous years there has been pressure on hospitality establishments to have matching furniture that conforms to a single theme. “However,” explained Liam O’Donnell, Director at Valdivian Furniture (valdivianfurniture.co.uk), “2017 is daring to be more creative and a mismatch of materials, textures and styles can establish a truly unique outdoor ambience. Riad, by OASIQ decide between wicker and aluminium, don’t - just pick both!” This not only gives customers a range of seating options to fit their mood, but it also makes a space look exclusive, stylish and perhaps even a little artistic. However, the styles must still go well together and shouldn’t clash in an unaesthetic way. “This can be avoided by commissioning customised outdoor furniture sets that
harmonise to create a tasteful outdoor environment,” Liam said. “Moreover, there is no longer a need for outdoor spaces to be perfectly modern and immaculate with rustic trends making their way back into the hospitality sector. “Timeworn styles, distressed wood, neutral colours and washed-out effects are all a great way to create a rustic, effortless environment for an outdoor space. This can
be further complimented with stone paving to accentuate the natural look, or conversely metallic finishes to establish a unique diversity within the space.” As the demand for outdoor living increases, homeowners are looking to create spaces with levels of design that reflect the standard of finish found indoors. “Indoor/outdoor spaces are becoming

inishing Touch was recently asked to undertake the refurbishment of the Head Office of a charity. The existing building dated from the 1950s and had a rather unfriendly, institutionalised feel. It had been modernised and updated sporadically over the years, and not always in a sympathetic manner. Lots of retro-fitted surface mounted cabling and ugly pipework. The reception area was a glass hatch; the experience of visiting was described by a guest as ‘like collecting a parcel from the sorting office.’ We worked closely with the architects to bring the CEO’s vision to life, and to our
delight, the design exceeded the client’s expectations. Those using the facilities have commented on how warm and welcoming the building now is and how peaceful it feels. The brief from the client was to update the building to make it friendly and welcoming for visitors and clients. This was particularly important given that part of the work of this charity involves helping adults who were either previously in their care as children, or whose adoption they were involved in. This can include meeting their birth family after many years.
in.BRIEF : 29
30 : in.BRIEF We used wood inside and out to create natural warmth and reference the concept of the tree. The exterior was clad in Accoya wood panels and we designed a bespoke curved wooden reception desk with Corian top. The reception desk has an integral shelf for wheelchair users that can be extended when required. The staff kitchen was relocated away from the reception area, and updated in a contemporary style in neutrals and warm colours, with a seating area and small garden outside. A new accessible visitors’ WC was created within the public area, larger in size with a curved wall. Sleek chrome fittings were chosen to reinforce the welcoming, contemporary feel. The materials and products both inside and out were chosen to reinforce the contemporary, ‘modernising’ ethos and welcoming feel, whilst reinforcing the Family Tree concept throughout.
The client wanted us to design a warm, inclusive and welcoming environment to facilitate this process. This included updating the exterior, the reception area, two ‘meeting’ or ‘reunion’ rooms, the staff kitchen and corridor, relocating the reprographics room and creating new bespoke storage.
also incorporated the colours of the logo into our scheme.
After meeting with the client, we envisaged the concept of a ‘Family Tree’. The parents are the roots, the charity is the trunk, and the children are the leaves of the tree. This then informed our design choices in terms of materials, shapes, colours and imagery. We
Whereas before it was dark, small and enclosed, it was now open, spacious and flooded with light. We used the leaf motif throughout, in a variety of textures – wood, glass, metal, and soft furnishings.
The priority was to open up the main reception area to create a welcoming open plan space. It was made to feel friendly and inclusive by the use of curves, circles, and warm colours and materials.
The existing, single glazed 1950s window frames of white painted metal meant that the building was freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer. Boiling in the summer as they couldn’t open the windows, otherwise they would be overrun with squirrels! We replaced all the windows with powdercoated graphite aluminium, which works wonderfully with the red brick of the building. It was an instant update. Visitors to the refurbished building thought the existing building had been knocked down and a new one rebuilt! Both the Family Tree concept, and the

This circle draws the visitor gently into the space, and is highlighted by a circle of recessed ceiling lights above. Privacy behind the reception desk is maintained, without loss of light, by a sandblasted privacy glass panel with a perpetual Celtic cross and the quote ‘And the Leaves of the Trees are for the Healing of the Nations.’ The window treatments in the reception and meeting rooms continue the leaf theme with a gentle yellow pattern of intertwining leaves. colours of the charity’s branding – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple – these colours are repeated in the leaves of the stained glass tree, the flooring, and the carved branches and leaves across the meeting room cupboards. We incorporated photos from the charity’s past and present into some of the leaves of the tree for the stained glass panel, further enhancing the idea of the children as the ‘leaves of the tree’. This gives a living sense to the history, and that we are all part of a large ‘family tree’. This was an interesting aspect of the project, researching how we could insert photos into glass panels so that they would be transparent for the light to shine through, but would not fade over time.
In order to help people to relax in the ‘reunion rooms’ I wanted to make them feel as un-corporate as possible, so it could almost feel like these incredibly emotional reunions were taking place in a ‘home from home.’ The branch and leaf design on the bespoke cabinetry was deliberately freehand, to lend an innocent quality to the design, almost like a child’s drawing. I wanted the space to feel completely nonthreatening, and as relaxing as possible. The discovery of what the client thought was a long-redundant BT cable box, which they thought would no longer be used when we moved the reprographics equipment to create the new large meeting room, became somewhat of an issue – we were informed by BT that under no condition

36 : in.BRIEF could it be moved or disconnected as it was vital! So we designed the wall of storage cupboards to accommodate and hide it within the room. My favourite element of the design came when we were given the incredible opportunity to design a bespoke stained glass window for the reception area. This stained glass panel is a tree with coloured leaves, and some of the leaves incorporate photos of the charity’s past and present. When light shines through this window the space is dappled with coloured light, adding to the sense of space and light. I am also really pleased at how well the curved reception desk fits into the overall design. When you imagine something you see how it will work in your head, and it is always wonderful when you see something you have designed on paper come to life, and ‘work’ in real life for the people who have to use it and work with it every day. I really wanted a reception desk that was welcoming and beckoning, rather than an imposing ‘gatekeeper’ or ‘security.’ Having a gently curving undulating desk makes the visitor feel comfortable and at ease, rather than as an unwelcome intruder into the space. It was wonderful to have a client who was incredibly responsive to our creative ideas, and who had a strong sense of the importance of the design of a space, in terms of how it can make people feel. www.finishingtouchlondon.com
