Welcome to the March issue of in.Design magazine!

We’ve been a busy lot here lately, not only did we recently launch our YouTube channel (have you checked this out yet?), but our new website has just gone live! These will both allow us to offer you more content online, and will give you more opportunities to communicate with us! We’ve some great features that involve readers, like expert comments in ‘in.Vogue’, sharing your diary for ‘Week in the Life’ and talking us through a project for ‘in.Brief’ – so what’s holding you back?

in this issue Donna staples of Pellings interior Design tells us of her fascinating sustainable project, the isis education Centre in Hyde Park for ‘in.Brief’, and Jan Wilson, owner and Managing Director of RPW Design Limited, gives us a glimpse of a week ‘in.Her Life’.

There’s a scent of sustainability about this issue, with a preview of the not-to-be-missed ecobuild, in.Brief’s nature education centre, and a look at carpet and vinyl recycling in our Flooring feature.

We also look at what’s happening in Bathrooms, and cast an eye over Decorative Art, which really makes you realise how important these ‘finishing touches’ are!

And finally, many congratulations to Jacqueline Duncan, Principal of the inchbald school, who was awarded with an OBe in the Queen’s new Year Honours List, for her contribution to the world of interior design.

i hope your March is wonderful – and if it is (and it involved your work!) why not tell us about it?

BIID Announces International Event

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced an inspirational new event hosted by its International Committee. ‘Global Perspectives – International Influencers of Our Generation’, will bring the world of design to BIID members and guests in the beautiful Lutyens Room at RIBA HQ, 13th March 2013

A

s its first event of 2013, the International Committee are gathering a selection of internationally acclaimed designers and experts from design bodies, such as the UKTI, to enlighten, educate and inspire visitors at this inaugural half day seminar. Focusing on the practical issues of working outside the UK, including regions such as Asia and Europe, the event will provide real examples of success stories from members of the industry. “Global Perspectives will provide a great platform to educate our members and put them in touch with those who are at the heart of the industry,” says Simon Hamilton, BIID International Director. “The event will look specifically at international design and the speakers will offer an insight into how to successfully work in a global capacity. We are also incredibly excited to have Lee Broom, one of the industry’s most influential figures, involved with the event.”

There will also be a panel discussion mediated by Kate Burnett, Editor of The Schemer magazine, looking into the experiences of Marc Krusin and Caterina Bortolussi, who have challenged conventions to succeed working internationally, which will be followed by a Q & A session. Over refreshments, the event will provide an opportunity to network with other BIID members and industry professionals. The event will count towards BIID member’s annual CPD points; details of which will be announced shortly. The CPD course promises

to be a truly unique experience, with an interesting and relevant take on the current interior design industry. Prices for the event are: BIID members £45; Non-members £60; Students £25. For more information please visit www.biid.org.uk

A Week In The Life Of Jan Wilson

Monday in 2010 we bought our own premises in Aldersgate Street, Clerkenwell. This has enabled us to showcase our business and provide space for future expansion. The building is a former Victorian print works with high ceilings and excellent natural light. i was also able to create an apartment in the development, so for the past year i have been living “over the shop”. There are huge benefits to being able to walk down the stairs to the office, which does not explain why i am frequently late! Clerkenwell is incredibly convenient for our business and the local amenities are amazing. i need to take regular exercise so with two gyms and a yoga studio within five minutes’ walk i can exercise before breakfast and still have time to check emails before the business day starts. When i am in London, Monday morning starts with a Project review meeting, followed by the first design review meeting. This week it was largely taken up with a de-brief from my business development trip to Asia the previous week. Overseas travel has become a routine part of most weeks and rPW Design is currently involved with hotel projects in places as diverse as Vladivostok, Kyoto and Oslo.

Jan Wilson is the owner and Managing Director of RPW Design Limited, a hospitality interior design studio that she co-founded with three other partners in 1989, acquiring sole ownership in 2009

Lunch is taken with my executive management team and provides another opportunity to review what’s happening in the studio. i am a great believer in handson management, and consider that good design is a result of meticulous attention to detail. i am lucky to have an incredibly talented team, but i review all the designs going through the office so that i can be

together, involving the purchase of an english vineyard. So there is much to talk about!

i spend the afternoon reviewing a presentation we are due to make for a new hotel in a Middle east desert resort – a challenging working environment – in which fabric selection and consideration of operational issues will be critical.

Tuesday This morning i am at the new interContinental London Westminster hotel, one of our most recently completed projects, to oversee a photo shoot. With just ten months between receiving the commission and completion, both timescales and budgets were tight but we are proud of the finished product. The design and artwork

Lunch is with a potential new client in the hotel’s Blue Boar restaurant. The Blue Boar is the only bar (that i know of) which now serves a cocktail named after me – the J&M. You should try it! A key feature of the guest rooms at the interContinental, for example, is the contemporary Westminster streetscapes that were especially commissioned for the hotel. Peter and i are collaborating on a number

of other projects, including the Marriott Park Lane and the Okura Hotel Amsterdam and meet to review options and agree concepts. There is just time to run through some carpet samples with the team back at the office before my twice-weekly Bikram Yoga class.

Private dining at the Stafford London Kempinski

Wednesday Wednesday starts with a site meeting at the Stafford Hotel in St James. rPW has proposed that the hotel’s old Wine Cellar be upgraded to provide an exciting new destination bar as an additional USP for the hotel.

Back to Aldersgate, and to the apartment where over lunch i review concept designs for our new tasting room at the vineyard, before packing for an overnight visit to Oslo. Just time this afternoon to discuss some complications that have arisen on a fivestar hotel project in Vladivostok. We have to find a way to accommodate the political considerations of the local owner within the standards of the leading luxury brand which will be managing the property. However this is familiar territory and a possible resolution is developed before one of my project directors, elizabeth, and i head to Heathrow for our flight to Norway. Thursday 7.30am start. Norwegian time!

Guest room luxury at the Hotel Okura Amsterdam

This morning elizabeth and i meet with the owner, the local architect and the project team to discuss the refurbishment of 60 guestrooms and the conference facilities at the Continental Hotel, Oslo. We start with a discussion about the banqueting areas where the goal is to maintain the very Scandinavian and individual style of the existing product. The property is very much the Grande Dame of Oslo, now in the

Jan’s living and working environments co-exist harmoniously! capable hands of the third generation of the same family. We take a ‘soft touch’ approach and the collaborative design process is pleasingly constructive. Over lunch we run through the ff&e Control Books for the guest bedrooms. The build is partly instigated by the need to upgrade the heating and air conditioning systems and replace the bathrooms so there is a quite detailed technical discussion before elizabeth and i catch a late flight back to London after a very long day.

Friday An early morning swim sets me up for the day, and then back to the office to prepare for next Monday’s trip to the interContinental Hotel Budapest where we are working with the operator, food and Beverage Consultants TGP, and the owner’s representative to develop a Master Plan for the phased upgrade of the hotel over the next five years. from Budapest, i am flying straight to Amsterdam for a meeting at the Amstel Hotel where our new bar concept is due to open next April. To make the most of

my time in Amsterdam, i am also meeting Marcel Van Aelst, the President and General Manager of Okura Hotels, a client of many years with whom i need to discuss our commission to design the imperial Suite for the Okura Kyoto, Japan. This afternoon is my ‘quiet time’ – spent catching up with emails and telephone calls. Saturday This morning, my eldest son richie and i attend a yoga class and then i spend much of the rest of day in planning my

The back-breaking work now done, i have put an enormous amount of thought and effort into what i hope will be a dry shaded oasis in the city of London, not an easy task even for a professional and i consider myself a very dogged amateur.

Sunday Michael and i drive out to the vineyard in essex. The long-term aim is to design a home for ourselves here, and make it our permanent base. in the short-term we are getting to grips with wine-making and considering ways in which we can capitalise on the growing interest in english sparkling wines.

Research and development is well under way to reduce dramatically the amount of water used for the average shower and provide safe and effective ways of recycling and conserving water. Minimalist product design remains the popular choice: Roman Showers “More and more of our customers are looking for intelligent storage,” stated John Drake, uK Sales Director at Burgbad. “For example, drawers, particularly under washbasins, are now outselling cupboards – you can see what you have at a glance. For smaller spaces, our Bel slimline cabinet with internal mirror and storage in the door is already one of our most popular pieces of furniture.” “We have actually stopped selling fitted bathroom furniture in the uK as modular furniture has really taken over in terms of demand! Inspired by trends in hotel and spa design, customers are looking for more creative bathroom interiors. our new range additions include open storage cubes, small wall-mounted cabinets and pull-out storage that can be combined to create spaces that reflect customers’ individual lifestyles, as well as being practical.”

At Frontline, we have some great new additions to our fitted furniture portfolio which offer style and practicality, as well as providing some great innovative storage solutions; push-to-open doors and drawers are truly minimalist and perfect for the stylish yet practical contemporary bathroom.” Leading in the fashion and popularity stakes at the moment is the steam shower – especially in the en-suite bathroom. “Many people are now realising that they can make the most of the space in the bathroom area with a beautiful steam shower which, as well as being compact and space-saving, also offers health benefits,” said Kicki Carlsson-Boyd of Dröm uK. “Frameless glass is especially popular as it enhances the feeling of space and a variety of colourful mosaic tiles can be used to complement and personalise the overall design scheme of the room. We are even seeing ‘his & hers’ steam showers now which follows the trend for ‘his & hers’ generally – from basins to whole bathrooms.” The past decade has seen some extraordinary innovations in shower enclosure design, agreed edel Nicholson, Marketing Manager, Merlyn Showering. “No longer is an enclosure a “box” to be hidden in the corner of the bathroom but more likely to be a stylish focal point. With the advent of multiple bathrooms we have seen more requests for unusual shaped enclosures – the possibilities for the 2013 shower enclosure really are endless!”

Merlyn are seeing more requests for unusual shaped enclosures Roman Showers Managing Director, David osborne, has noticed that minimalist product design with thicker glass remains the popular choice, particularly at the higher end of the market. “Alongside the overall look,” he pointed out, “the movement of the enclosure door has also become a factor when specifying at the higher end of the market – it should be totally smooth and almost silent. uniquely within the bathroom, the shower enclosure is one of the few bathroom items which contains moving parts and receives impact constantly, following installation. Therefore it should be one of the most considered parts of the bathroom design.”

There are some elements you can save money on, and some you can’t! “High quality, premium brassware makes a huge difference to the look and feel of your bathroom and can have a bigger impact than many realise,” claims Steve Cole, Managing Director of Perrin & Rowe. “Finishing touches, such as brassware, have long been overlooked or viewed as an afterthought but attitudes are now beginning to change and homeowners are coming to recognize these products as an important aspect of design. For a touch of luxury and originality, try to explore the different brassware finishes now available

Perrin & Rowe explore different brassware finishes and steer away from the standard aesthetics normally expected from a bathroom tap.” Space, design, water flow, function and budget will all contribute to the selection process of bath and shower solutions, which has resulted in Perrin & Rowe seeing a greater demand for more superior, premium showerheads and controls. “Modern tap designs are really pushing the boundaries aesthetically,” stated Susan

Asarota: Haute Couture For Glass Mosaic Native of the French Lorraine region, famed for its top brands in luxury glass, Catherine and Christophe de Moura have long held a passion for this material, specifically glass mosaic

o produce their dream of small glass tiles, the couple required a glass master – and met one in the Bohemian region. in 2009, the Asarota house launched its first collections. Based in London, Asarota exports its expertise beyond the European borders! Since the creation of Asarota, the glass master has sought to develop the colours, in particular a range of 26 greys; allowing for exact renderings of shades and details of any images, thus obtaining the same visual quality as a picture or a design, with the extra artistic dimension. Asarota’s strength lies in the alliance of ancestral luxury expertise and an advanced technology, allowing images and pictures to be translated in to glass mosaic, without size limitation, for floors and walls, for inside and out. Asarota has developed a high quality of European-made glass. With experience in the luxury jewellery industry for many years, the glass master applies this meticulous approach to the tiles, achieving an irreproachable quality, devoid of microbubbles, so once installed the shiny glass

retains its brightness, and the matt glass its velvet quality. the Asarota colour range is the result of demanding research with intense tonalities, never before used, for opaque and transparent glass. today, 250 colours have been created in the laboratory, amongst which around 50 are currently offered for sale. Each year, 50 new references will increase their colour range.

People are opting for tap designs that are really unusual and provide the ‘wow’ factor in the bathrooms. With innovative tap design constantly evolving, the possibilities for highly practical

yet extremely unusual taps are endless.” As suppliers of steam rooms and saunas for over thirty years, Dale Sauna have seen many trends come and go, “But if there is one trend that seems to have been popular in 2012 it’s the Hammam,” claimed Dale Sauna’s gerard McCarthy.

Hammam can be many things to many people, but to most it includes some combination of steam infused room and a heated massage “slab”, based upon the traditional Turkish bathing rituals. “We have installed a number of such rooms into high value homes, some following more closely to the original principle than others, with one recent installation being for a private client on the Wentworth estate,” explained gerard. “other popular requests have been for elaborate showers, some with their own essence delivery systems and mood lighting, and of course the ubiquitous sauna!” And if you are one of the high net worth individuals that can afford such luxurious items, you don’t want to have to wait whilst your sauna warms up; the option to switch it on remotely (usually from anywhere in the world) is also of course an option...

P

aintings and sculpture are not simply added at the end of a project, they are frequently the initial inspiration! “I have found that more and more interior designers are using original fine art as a starting point within their schemes, rather than as a merely decorative finishing touch,” said artist Jessica Zoob. “on-going creative relationships between designers and artists are incredibly important and can allow the client direct access to unique artworks which can completely transform their properties. Fine art is vital as it can raise a beautiful interior into a magical one. “Clients often say that the paintings add the soul to their new interior, it is their way of expressing personality and passion and therefore vital to get right.” As well as exhibiting their taste, corporate clients often want to use art to demonstrate their products or their environmental credentials. “In my view, the current trend seems to be companies wanting to reduce their carbon footprint, or at least be seen to be doing so,” claims Sophie Marsham, a sculptor who works with stainless steel, copper and reclaimed and recycled metals. “If they are choosing to invest in bespoke artwork for their foyers etc., they are requesting more and more for recycled or reclaimed materials. Although I have been working in the Public Art field for almost 20 years, it has become a lot more apparent recently.” We show Two Flowers, made from reclaimed stainless steel medical tools for the foyer of Kirshenbaum, Bond & Partners in New York. “Not only should the art be

36 : in.Vogue site specific but the choice of material is key,” Sophie adds. London glassblowing, one of europe’s leading hot glass studios, has worked on a number of challenging collaborative projects recently, including sculptural light fittings for landmark architectural projects, developing a method of encapsulating flammable items such as a feather or fabric within glass, and interpreting a Hockney painting. “This successful series is the result of a collaboration with the Royal Academy, who requested a version of David Hockney’s ‘Arrival of Spring’ in glass to coincide with his major exhibition there in 2012,” explained artistic director, Peter Layton. “It has involved creating new methods of applying complex colour ways in a painterly fashion to a variety of shapes.”

at the newly opened Louvre-Lens art museum,” said Danny Hanlon, Chief operating officer of Trend gB. “We also supplied millions of 24 carat gold mosaic tiles for the Mecca Royal Clock Tower.” Advanced digital technology used on the Louvre-Lens project, for rendering artwork and CAD files into custom-made mosaics, is also becoming fashionable in the commercial world, for commissioning original mosaic designs for boardrooms, reception areas and building facades. even in the residential sector, artistic murals are also on trend for introducing colour and originality to open plan kitchen-diners.

glassblowing is a dying art in Britain, but studios like London glassblowing are not only keeping rapidly declining skills alive, but producing groundbreaking new, sumptuously coloured works that are highly collectible and keenly sought after. Peter added “Collaboration and the use of multimedia is the way forward for any design/craft based business in the future.” Artwork can even be built in to walls and floors! glass mosaic is one of the oldest, most authentic art forms known to civilisation. So it is reassuring to note that what has largely become a decorative medium is reverting to its origins, through the creation of mosaics artworks for public, commercial and private settings. “our most prized recent commission has been the provision of micro mosaic tiles for an avant-garde floor mosaic

Alex Serr, Creative Director of Art Love believes that when it comes to trends, fashion and interiors are closely linked. “The current trends for art that I can see are mirrored from fashion are geometrics, bright colours, and texture,” she said. Art Love’s bestsellers are ‘Cubes’, a black and white geometric paint on canvas piece which looks great against any coloured back wall, and ‘White Angles’, a triptych of white textured paintings. “The artist creates the textured look through using a technique of layering the paint. The process is lengthy but the end result is truly unique and stunning,” explained Alex. “Another popular set is the more inexpensive giclée prints by Dylan Flynn including ‘Circle Line’ and ‘Circadian’. These are very bright and uplifting pieces which I think give people the boost they need especially during the dark winter days and nights.”

Augustus Brandt of Augustus Brandt Antiques has seen an increase in demand this year for impressionist statues, saying buyers are becoming more adventurous in their choices, looking for statement pieces that are personal and convey a message that says a lot about the owner. “Chrome has been a material that has proved particularly popular, with large statement chrome pieces leading the way in statue requests,” he noted. With regard to art, Augustus has found oil on canvas has been most popular, with a sharp rise in requests for seductive, semi-nude (but tasteful) portraits from 18th and 19th centuries. “This also supports the trend for buyers wanting statement, bold pieces

Artic Storm: Neon There is definitely a trend with clients wanting to engage their guests in a more visual way, and go beyond the artwork being purely decorative. “We have achieved this recently in various hotels where the buildings are of period architecture,” Ivan added, “We have created unique artworks as visual talking points, by combining historical and contemporary architectural images with social history, and where appropriate, historical literary text.” So is artwork simply beautiful to behold, or useful in the pleasure it supplies? either way, it’s impossible to live without!

Flooring: For Past, Present, And Future! Flooring is an integral part of any design scheme, so we look at what’s trending – and how to make the process more sustainable!

F

rom fashion house to the fashionable home, dressing oneself influences dressing one’s home!

“A trend that continues from last season is ‘going wild’ inspired by African craft,” claimed Lorna Haigh, Alternative Flooring’s Marketing Manager. “Catwalk and fashion for the home seem to go around like some sort of style merry-go-round. Soon after animal prints began influencing fashion designers, those same designs and similar hues began showing up in the home. Alternative’s Quirky collection is spot-on with Skinny – a faux animal print in black and white or natural shades. Also monochrome continues to be big for both fashion and interiors. Nothing adds drama to the floor like a classic monochrome palette and it works every season.” Although Deirdre Dyson’s passion with designing carpets is colour, she has noticed the market’s beige and brown period became a multi/pattern period. As for upcoming trends? “My inclination is that the market will go towards monochrome,” she said. “We are planning a very exciting stand for the DX show in May!”

Mode Chapel oak: Victoria Luxury Flooring

And to prove that monochromes and grey are not boring, Deirdre describes a recent project. “one of my solutions to a client’s sweeping curved staircase was to make each riser a different grey that graded from pale to dark in waves as you went up, but from the top looking down, it looked like a plain carpet.” Parrot Fish, shown, is from Deirdre’s 2013 themed collection.

Wood floors are an ‘evergreen’ choice! At the top end of the market, Victorian Woodworks are seeing clients investing in and restoring period features in their homes, such as wood floors, which have often been removed. “We pride ourselves on creating exceptional floors that meet client’s specifications; right down to the fact that when installed, the floor looks like it is part of the original fabric of the building,”

said general Manager Steve Payne. “Popular designs include Versailles panels, traditional herringbone and chevron pattern floors together with parquet woodblock and planks.” Resilient floor finishes are echoing the craftsmanship of a bygone age when wood floors were worked by hand. “Hand scraped surface textures, and reclaimed and rustic looks, are prominent customer

46 : in.Vogue

Deidre Dyson’s Parrot Fish selections, especially in large plank formats,” noted Robert Byrne, Marketing Manager at Victoria Luxury Flooring. There is a move toward ‘salvaged’ wood effects, these quirky designs reflecting reclaimed and up-cycled timber – for example kegs or champagne crates. “Customers are also combining products

within their interior scheme, using hard flooring for defining lines,” added Robert, “softened by mixing with carpet or rugs for more social and relaxing zones. While carpet designers are focusing on texture, mixing pile types for an organic feel, and splashes of strong colour are an essential, against the more traditional neutrals, beige and greys, as our designers look to the fashion world for the latest colour palettes to feed their

creativity.” And with interior designers frequently having a ‘sustainability’ element in each brief, we need to look at how replacing existing flooring can be made more environmentally friendly. one way is to ensure that any un-used flooring such as offcuts are not binned but recycled.

48 : in.Vogue Diversion of carpet waste from landfill increased to 21.4% in 2012, a rise of 30% on the previous year, reports Carpet Recycling uK (CRuK). The industry body’s success in finding new reuse, recycling and energy recovery outlets for waste carpet and carpet tiles saw 85,000 tonnes of waste carpet avoiding burial last year. CRuK’s target is 25% landfill diversion by 2015. of the 85,000 tonnes, the recycled and reused portion was 36,000 tonnes, while 49,000 tonnes was sent for energy recovery via cement kilns and power generation plants. energy recovery grew by 44% or 15,000 tonnes as the high calorific value of carpets became more widely recognised and exploited. Last year also saw record levels of carpet production off-cuts – more than 6,000 tonnes – diverted from landfill by uK-based members of Carpet Recycling uK. These manufacturers prevented 6,049 tonnes of off-cuts from the production process going into the ground, representing a diversion rate of 99% in 2012. Recycling was by far the majority outlet at 5,241 tonnes with only 808 tonnes used for energy recovery. Vinyl too can be recycled! Recofloor is the uK’s national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, founded in 2009 by leading uK flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to tackle growing volumes of waste vinyl flooring being sent to landfill. or the calm breakout area, contractors Brighton-based Rightwoods installed Etloe’s mixed width Ash, an engineered floor made from Welsh timber with a birch ply back. The floor was hand engineered and finished by Etloe in the UK using Bona Create Ice stain and Bona Naturale. The objective was to create a flat, natural looking surface which wouldn’t detract from the soft yet distinctive Ash grain. At the opposite end of the building a rather noisier effect was created by using engineered oak finished with a Richard Woods screen-printed design on the floor, stairway and walls of the sunken media screening area. Bona’s Technical Manager, Alec Stacey, worked with Rightwoods to develop a specification to finish the surface comprising two coats of Bona Mega – normally used as a top coat but in this instance as a primer to provide the necessary build to level the screen-printed surface – and two coats of highly durable Bona Traffic HD.

The Bona finishes used in each area deliver the required combination of looks, durability, and ease of maintenance. Bona’s commercial maintenance products are to be used on an ongoing basis by the in-house team to clean and protect the surface and to extend the time required between recoating.

Its flexibility enables all sectors of the supply chain to engage and recycle small volumes of material that would otherwise be land-filled. Recofloor gives an accredited Certificate of Commitment to each collector and operates its own annual award scheme to recognise collectors who consistently return good quality material. Drop-off sites at flooring distributors allow local contractors to deposit waste vinyl, meaning fewer visits to sites and further reducing the scheme’s carbon impact. Since its inception, the Recofloor scheme has collected 1,259 tonnes of smooth offcuts, smooth uplifted vinyl and safety offcuts for recycling back into products, such as new products – an equivalent saving of 1,007,200 kg (1,007 tonnes) of Co2. This is equivalent to driving 120 times around the equator or taking 248 cars off the road for a year!

Donna Staples of Pellings Interior Design talks us through how she met the brief with a fascinating sustainable project, the Isis Education Centre in Hyde Park

T

he isis education Centre is a wonderful example of sustainable contemporary design, enhancing an already beautiful royal Park landscape. Bringing to life a long since dis-used Victorian reservoir, the dynamic timber framed building, designed by David Morley Architects, sits above it, echoing the patterns, shadows and shapes of the trees’ canopies. Pellings LLP had the privilege of working with a talented team of sustainable contractors fairhurst Ward Abbott (fWA) to deliver the building and interiors for this award winning project. The interior design of this project would present an exciting challenge; it would have to be considerate of the architecture and surrounding environment, it had to complement the materials of nature, whilst ensuring the real star was not the building and interior but nature itself. it had to act as a beautiful neutral palette, upon which the children would create, learn and feel inspired to value the beauty of nature and live more sustainably.

Donna Staples

it’s both an education space and a function venue

54 : in.Brief Community events were held to include children and young people in the design of the project, ensuring that sustainable education at the isis education Centre begins at the start of the project. The new building has been thoughtfully designed to ensure that it is viewed and used as part of the greater landscape of the park. The surrounding trees are reflected within the design by a series of organic timber structural columns and branches which in turn support a living landscape at roof level and shelter inspiring learning spaces within. The carefully mapped landscape within the boundary is drawn skywards by green walls and illustrated stories worked into the external envelope. Sensitive and ecologically sound materials support the sustainability ethic promoted by the project, and educational opportunities orchestrated by the building and the landscape abound. The Look Out offers a valuable and unique experience for children and adults to address, enjoy, and learn about nature. The furniture too, needed to be sustainably sourced, with suppliers having ranking environmental criteria high on their list. The flooring contained minimum 60% recycled content, with contractors using low voc and voc-free adhesives where possible. The furniture also needed to relate to the beautiful timber frame, cast at angles around the building, like the branches of trees.

Use of timber further enhanced the environment

inspirational lighting! A selection of the natural elements around the park was collected, and this formed the basis for the colour palette. The building and the interior needed to work cohesively and the space needed to be light and fresh. The use of features such as coat pegs and coloured storage walls ensured that the space was not too muted – the personality of the project needed to come through. The client was also keen to

provide a space that could be used as both an education space and also a function and conference venue for professional speakers and events. A folding and sliding partition allows multiuse; this also needed to be in a natural, light palette to ‘disappear’ when not required.

Our experience of working on sustainable buildings stood us in good stead on this challenge, as the consideration for environmental design had to also work practically and to a realistic budget. We have established a valuable supply chain of manufacturers who offer product ranges suitable for this type of project. Often the biggest challenge is finding an appropriate range that has exactly the palette you

The introduction of coloured acoustic ceiling tiles helped to keep the space open and light, but also offer interest and a sense of fun to the space. The play of the white and green storage units represented the leaves moving in the breeze, allowing sunlight to shine through. Use of natural corks, recycled timber surfaces and worktops further enhanced the environment, coupled with inspirational lighting by feature designers and colours that mirrored the changing colours of the royal Park. The colours reflected the sky, the Serpentine, the natural earth tones, and the variety of trees and plants around the building. The material palette for the interiors needed to be sustainably sourced, but still fit within a realistic budget. One of the greatest challenges for sustainable design is building up a resource of manufacturers and suppliers who are able to fulfil the environmental requirements of a project of this type. This is coupled with the desire to fulfil the client’s expectations, dreams, and aspirations for such an exciting and inspiring ecology project – a nature education centre – a rare and wonderful opportunity in such a well preserved and protected location on the bank of the Serpentine in Hyde Park.

The dynamic timber frame echoes the patterns of tree canopies

The isis education Centre is real testimony to the commitment of educating everyone, of all ages and from all backgrounds, to the value of celebrating our beautiful world and the importance of preserving and protecting it. By giving it the consideration it deserves, be it through preserving natural habitats or designing sustainable buildings, it all works towards a greener world for everyone.

New Year Honours List Recognises Jacqueline Duncan The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is delighted to announce that Jacqueline Duncan, the current Principal of the Inchbald School, a past BIID Merit Award recipient and a driving force behind the formation of the BIDA (British Interior Design Association), now the BIID, has received an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

T

he award of Order of the British Empire recognises Jacqueline Duncan’s distinguished contribution to the world of interior design.

Jacqueline helped lay the foundations for today’s BIID back in the 1960s. She enlisted the help and support of her husband, Michael Inchbald and leading post-war designers Hicks, Siddeley and Bannenberg to create a structured Association, along the lines of the American Institute of Designers, which later became the BIDA. In 1960, Jacqueline founded the Inchbald School of Design and is now its Principal. Jacqueline was determined that the school would provide a sound basis of knowledge for a professional career at the top levels of Interior Design. Recognised as the first interior design school in Europe, the Inchbald

School of Design has met these expectations and today offers interior and garden design study courses, including Post Graduate and Masters qualifications. Jacqueline has received a BIID Merit Award for her contribution to the profession and the Institute. She has also made significant public contributions to the Monopolies Commission, as the first female Commissioner, as a serving member of the Copyright Committee, as a Justice of the Peace in South Westminster and as a Westminster Councillor. Throughout her career, Jacqueline has retained a passionate interest in the development of knowledge and talent which has driven her through life. “It is a great honour to receive an OBE,” says

Jacqueline Duncan, OBE Jacqueline. “Every day, every experience, is a learning curve. Inchbald is a brilliant school where students learn that learning never stops. However brilliant you may be, your client is still your main priority. If you cannot please your client you have failed in your job as a designer.” “It is wonderful news that Jacqueline has received an OBE,” says Sue Timney, BIID President. “We are very proud of the long history and association the BIID has with Jacqueline and I would like to sincerely congratulate her on this well-deserved achievement.”

private view is a chance for designers to come and achieve an insight into a truly unique property.”

The ‘Private View’ series provides an exclusive insight into a diverse range of interesting residential and commercial projects. The Trees Extra Care Housing project, located within the Highgate Conservation area, is a development of 40 Extra Care self-contained flats which include one and two bedroom homes.

The Trees building has been designed around the gardens, making use of the building’s natural light and creating views of the landscaped gardens. Architects PRP ensured that the development incorporated key design features that will meet the needs of the elderly, both now and in the future. This high quality housing scheme for the elderly is the first affordable rental housing in Highgate for many years.

“This series of exclusive events is a great opportunity for our members to experience a variety of projects,” says Claudette Williams, Education and Events Executive at the BIID. “The Trees Extra Care Housing project had an interesting brief that has been met with an extremely innovative use of design. Trees has won several awards including Lifetime Home of the Year, The Daily Telegraph British Homes Awards 2011, and the HAPPI Completed Award: Housing Design Awards 2011, to name a few. This

The afternoon will begin with a talk by interior designer Michael Sandford of PRP Architects who will explain their role on this project, followed by a tour of the scheme. Michael Sandford joined PRP Architects in 2008 and runs the interior department. Michael previously worked at Conran and Partners and has a varied portfolio of high profile projects. Michael is currently working on a number of extra care and hospitality projects all over the UK, both in the private and public sectors.
