Welcome to the October issue of in.Design magazine!

A great show season was enjoyed by all, but we’ve had to go to press too soon to get the feedback into print – so look out for our november issue where a post-shows Forum will catch up with Blanca sanchez, Clare Pascoe, Hugh Jamieson, Ros Wilson and nico Yiannikkou from september’s preview, to see what their favourite elements of the shows were, and what new discoveries they made!

The sleep event and the independent Hotel show previews mean we have a theme to this issue, with three hotel and hospitality focussed in.VOgUe features looking at how bathrooms, flooring and lighting can be staged to give guests the wow factor. And in in.BRieF, suna interior Design, an award-winning boutique interior design consultancy, talk us through their designs for the four-star Flemings Mayfair hotel.

Manchester-based design practice Curve was founded by Ben and Lucy Clarke; in Week in the Life Ben opens his diary to us, which includes a trip to a client’s stunning home in spain.

The BiiD have their usual packed schedule – they’ve just announced details of a series of Professional Practice CPD seminars to be held at RiBA HQ in London during late 2013 and early 2014, and as part of their CPD calendar this autumn have planned a special course for members, “Using and Understanding interior Design Contracts”. it’s well worth taking a look at their full programme.

And autumn is definitely here – so order the wood and get the winter-weight sofa throws out!

Hope you have a lovely month.

Dubbed ‘the catwalk of hotel design’, Sleep Hotel is an inspirational highlight of the show that invites design companies to create and, with their fit-out partners, build room sets that could actually translate into a live hotel environment. This year’s contenders will be creating a room concept for a hotel built in the 1960s, the era of Pop Art, a challenge inspired by a major exhibition on Pop Art Design opening this autumn at London’s Barbican. The exhibition curator, Catherine Ince, will be selecting the winning room set at the event with fellow judges Anthony Ingham of Starwood and Conrad Smith of ReardonSmith Architects. The Sleep exhibition has long been credited as a show where business is done! Amongst the 130 exhibitors are a number of wellknown names including Summit Furniture, Interface, Época Mobiliário Internacional S.A, Morgan Furniture, Laufen, GROHE, OW Hospitality and bautex – stoffe GmbH. Almost a third will be showcasing their

products for the first time with companies represented from across Europe as well as the United States and Hong Kong. A gallery will feature the winning entries from the European Hotel Design Awards, revealed at the awards dinner on the evening before Sleep. • The European Hotel Design Awards Dinner: Tuesday 19th November, Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, London. A Week In The Life Of Ben Clarke Manchester based design practice Curve was founded by Ben and Lucy Clarke in 2006 with an aim to bring the very best of interior design to their work across the north of England and beyond. We follow Ben on a busy week, travelling between Manchester and Mallorca. Monday I always start the week with a team meeting at Curve HQ in Manchester whenever possible. We have a ten strong team working from our studio in Piccadilly and typically have around 30 projects on the go at once, so we’ll run through the list of what everyone is doing, plus discuss any new enquiries etc. Then I’ll have some time to chat with each designer about the

projects in more detail as necessary. Curve moved into our new studio earlier this year and the wonderful new space has given us the scope to spread out and get organised which in turn has massively helped both our creativity and productivity! In the afternoon I drive out to Cheshire with Catherine, one the designers, to visit the install team who are on site at a 400

Cheshire bedroom year old country mansion which used to belong to the mountineer George Mallory. The client is moving in this week so we have some decorating being finished off as well as lots of furniture arriving. Catherine and I meet our curtain designer Jane and fitter Matthew and run through some details about the

poles and tracks. We then leave the install team to it, we have our own specialist furniture fitters and they are invaluable to ensure this vital stage goes to plan. As we are in the vicinity, this afternoon have made an appointment to go and see

a potential new job in Bowden. An architect who we have worked with previously has put us in touch so we know it’s going to be a stunning house! The meeting goes well, we have an initial chat and later in the week I will put together a proposal of how the project might work.

18 : in.HIS LIFE Tuesday I have a meeting first thing with clients in Uppermill which is just up the road from us. I love working in Saddleworth, not only as it’s such a beautiful area but also as it means I can drop the kids off at school first! Our clients live in Texas so we are managing the project very carefully to fit in with their schedule. We have builders on site at the moment so I am making regular visits to ensure all is going well. We begin to discuss ideas for the schemes in some of the rooms which will please designer Georgie who can’t wait to get to the exciting stage of putting them together for the next meeting. In the afternoon I get into the studio for a few hours to work on various stages of projects, from putting together budget schedules to making CAD drawings. While I am there I get involved with what the other designers are doing. Jessie is working on a fast turnaround scheme for a Georgian and Jacobean stately home in Wales. As

Outdoor bar, pool and living area at Port D’Andratx, Mallorca the deadline is very short Lucy and Jessie are searching out furniture and accessories which we can purchase and deliver quickly. It’s very exciting but the pressure is on!

Before leaving I get together all the things I need for my trip to Spain, presentation boards which the team have prepared, brochures and samples. I’ll spend the evening putting together the project proposal for the house in Prestbury before an early start. Wednesday Over the past few years Curve have built up somewhat of an international reputation, completing projects in Spain, the South of France and Mallorca. This morning I am flying to Marbella for a site visit to an amazing villa that we are developing in three different stages. During this initial stage I am overseeing the production of a custom designed fireplace and confirming the final furniture scheme which is bright and vibrant and going to look amazing!

This Mallorca bedroom has a nautical influence

After a great meeting in Marbella it’s back to the airport and on to the late flight out to Palma in Mallorca ready for tomorrow.

in.HIS LIFE : 19 Thursday In the morning I meet up with the Spanish architect at a job which we are well underway with to develop a terrace area in Port D’Antratx. It’s a villa where we’ve worked previously so it’s great to go back and see how the new design is going to look in situ. We discuss the way that screens are going to work to provide shelter and shade around an external dining and seating area which we have designed and specified.

After a couple of hours catching up with the team back in the UK and sending a few emails, I meet up with Alec from PH Mallorca who we have worked with extensively over the last couple of years. We have a good catch up over a meal and a couple of margeritas in the port, and discuss the latest projects on the island which we hope Curve will get involved in over the next twelve months.

Friday Friday morning and I am on the first flight back to Manchester and straight back to the office for some catching up! I debrief our account manager Laura regarding some of the decisions that have been made during my meetings in Spain. Laura will liaise with our long list of suppliers to ensure orders are placed, checked and delivered, and pass all the paperwork

Bright Cheshire living room

20 : in.HIS LIFE

Luxurious living in Mallorca over to Emma our office manager to keep things running smoothly. I spend a couple of hours in the studio catching up with my own project work. During the afternoon one of our fabric suppliers pops in and drops off some new fabric books which always causes excitement for the design team and we all gather round to browse the new collections before adding them to our fabric library. We are working on an Edwardian conversion in Lancashire at the moment and we pick out several fabrics straight away which

are perfect for the job, keeping in touch with suppliers like this provides us with a constant source of inspiration. I try and get home in good time to unwind with a curry, a few beers and a good box set on a Friday night... at the moment we are hooked on ‘Breaking Bad’ so that’s my idea of a perfect evening! Saturday With being away during the week I need to spend a few hours in the studio on Saturday to catch up with some paperwork. I manage

to get an early start and get plenty done. At teatime Lucy and the girls come and meet me so we get chance for a nice family meal out in Manchester, usually noodles or pizza. Sunday We always try and keep one clear day a week to do something exciting with the kids or catch up with friends. In the evening though the lap top is out again and I sit and prepare for the week ahead, this last couple of hours of the weekend gives me a head start for what is sure to be another hectic but fantastic week!

Eau How Nice! A hotel bathroom makes or breaks the effect of the entire suite – no matter how good the bedroom’s decor, a non-wow bathroom cancels any edge gained! Juliet Davies asks what the experts are recommending

A

ngela Ortmann-Torbett, Sales Director West Europe at Kaldewei, considers that a good shower is generally high on the wish list of every hotel guest, and is finding more hotels installing walkin shower areas in addition to, or in some cases, instead of a bath. “Steel enamel shower surfaces offer outstanding hygienic properties as unlike tiled shower floors they have smooth surfaces without grout, making them extremely hygienic and easy to clean,” said Angela. “Not only can tile grout look unsightly after a short period of intensive use, but depending on the substrate the floor can also move slightly which causes the grout to crack and the floor to lose its waterproof integrity.” Thanks to these advantages, large walk-in floor level enamelled shower surfaces are becoming a popular choice. These are often coloured to match the surrounding floor tiles in natural matt colours which give a chic and warm look to the bathroom. Clever installation aids ensure a neat, floor level installation and also guarantees no leaks. There are three key areas of importance in hotel bathroom design, states Ilker Hussein, Manager of Global Projects at Laufen – minimalist designs, ease of

cleaning, and customisation. “Larger than average washbasins that can be used as statement pieces are a key trend,” he explained. “Similarly, open shelving units and flexible modular furniture are also key trends as they help to keep the space clutter-free yet provide essential storage space that hotel guests expect. “In terms of materials, ceramic is by far the most popular sanitaryware material due to its ease of cleaning and sheer durability,” added Ilker. At a time when the domestic bathroom is itself becoming more hotel-like and luxurious, the onus really is on hotel designers to create indulgent spaces that set the hotel apart from the competition. Mark Walker, UK Sales Director of Bagno Design, explained, “One effective way of doing so is to opt for materials and finishes that break from the norm, think gold, copper or brushed nickel to turn a bath, basin or brassware into a real focal point of the bathroom. Similarly, stone and marble basins and baths are ideal for adding a touch of real luxury whilst being easy to maintain and keep looking as good as new. “Using such materials not only sets a hotel apart from the competition but also leaves a lasting impression in the minds of

Natural stone, glass mosaics, corian and book-matched marble are all currently popular finishes for steam showers. “Frameless glass is also very fashionable as the ultra clear glass gives additional space and light. Retro decor in the form of gold tiles and accessories can result in a statement piece and privacy glass is always a welcome addition in confined and contemporary areas,” continued Erin. “Feature showers with body jets, atomisers, chromotherapy, aromatherapy and sound modules are also a great way to experience the benefits of wellbeing.”

Dröm UK Ltd

Sara Johnston, Marketing & Communications Manager at Geberit agrees. “Hotel bathrooms are increasingly turning into spalike sanctuaries, offering guests exceptional design and quality above and beyond the comforts of their own home,” she said. “Wall-hung sanitaryware has long been a key look in the hotel bathroom and this is still the case today. Technology is now being incorporated to ensure the hotel bathroom operates as efficiently as possible, so that

Crosswater Group means low flush cisterns and infra-red sensor controls. Such products not only work on a practical level but also help hotels maintain their star ratings for luxury too.” The other factor that can make or break a hotel’s reputation is the issue of hygiene, as guests often rate the comfort of their room by its cleanliness. “By opting for wall-hung sanitaryware, floor areas are kept clear of fixtures and fittings where dust and dirt can easily gather and unsightly pipework is kept behind the wall,” added Sara. “This streamlined look makes cleaning the bathroom between guests a quick and hassle-free affair.”

Geberit And it’s not just cleaning, but routine maintenance that can affect room use. A growing number of hotels are seeking a low-impact bathroom-management service that understands the idiosyncrasies of the hospitality sector and ensures bathrooms are only out of commission for the shortest possible time. “If a bathroom is out of commission the room is unoccupied and the impact is felt

in the restaurant, spa and in room-service orders too,” explained Dave Balmer, senior hospitality manager for Crosswater Group. “We see our role as bringing together all elements of the bathroom to deliver a hugely positive physical contact point between the guest and the hotel – if the bathroom does not deliver the highest quality bathing and grooming experience it reflects on the hotel.”

Kaldewei Modern bathroom design for the hotel market tends to fit into either the statement or discreet design category. Designers can either work with the sanitaryware to make it the key feature in the bathroom or use it to blend seamlessly into the overall scheme. “The statement look is usually defined by very dramatic shapes such as a finely tapered pedestal or an unusually contoured basin,” described Darren Paxford, National Sales Manager, VitrA. “The discreet style champions refined and sophisticated products which do not shout for attention, but work as part of the overall aesthetic. This could be a minimalist basin or WC with little detailing and a clean white look or a sleek handless piece of furniture with a neutral finish. It can be a very clinical style with precise corners or it can be softened with rounded contours on the edges of the furniture or basin.”

The wellness trend is also very influential on bathroom design at the moment, with organic shapes and natural materials featuring heavily. “Organically shaped products and finishes hark back to nature and are ideal for creating a pampering bathroom space,” added Darren. “It can be simple to achieve; try sanitaryware with sensuous lines that conjure up images of a droplet of water or a lusciously smooth pebble. This can be as dramatic as desired; whether it’s subtle rounded curves on a piece of furniture or a basin which actually resembles a splash of water. To enhance the spa like feel of a room, designers should try soft hues such as sage green or natural woods such as bamboo for the furniture.” Many hotels are looking to minimise their carbon footprint, and reducing water use

And in a barefoot location, floors are very important! “As part of our on-going relationship with Radisson Edwardian Hotels, RAK Ceramics has supplied tiles for the refurbishment of the luxury four-star Mercer Street Hotel, in London’s vibrant Covent Garden,” said Rob Jull, Managing Director at RAK Ceramics UK Ltd. “Our Paradox orange-toned porcelain tiles, with their stunning contemporary semi-polished metallic finish, were chosen by the designer to add ambience and give a luxury look to floors throughout the hotel. The tiles complement and reflect the other gloss and metallic surface finishes, giving the interior a unique character.” So whether your brief is a contemporary city boutique or country house hotel, it would seem that guests expect as much, if not more, from the bath than the bed!

Watt A Welcome Lighting for hotels and leisure venues needs to be suitable for a working environment, and to create the required mood for the type of venue – not an easy brief! We look at some interesting projects, and talk to the experts

H

otel lighting sits in a very special niche in what is already a sector requiring design expertise! Robert Chelsom, Managing Director of Chelsom Ltd shares his experience of the latest trends and customer requests with us. What have been the key lighting trends in hotels in the last 12 months? There has been a distinct shift in the style of hotel lighting schemes over the last 12 months, people definitely want to see more individuality when it comes to design. We are starting to see a much more eclectic mix in terms of both styles and fittings especially in the guestrooms; colours are bold and shades are becoming more vibrant with stripes and contrasting trims being at the forefront in 2012, leaving behind the ‘co-ordinated’ style that was so popular previously. The lighting in public spaces is all about taking this idea of individuality using it to create a unique lighting experience by commissioning bespoke pieces and spectacular show-stopping designs integrated in to ceiling structures. Another key trend is the rise of the residential look. Guests want hotels to feel like a luxurious home away from home and they want their guestroom lighting in particular to reflect this, to be stylish yet functional. One of the big challenges for us is creating this residential look yet maintaining the contract function and quality.

Perforated metal floor lamps at Pullman St Pancras from Chelsom

And what can we expect to see in 2013/2014? One of the biggest emerging trends is undoubtedly the industrial look. There has

in.VOGUE : 35 been a much more functional look and feel to products lately and I predict there is a lot more of this to come; think exposed mechanical joints, over-sized switches and visible engineering. After threatening to do so for a number of years, I think brass will make its comeback in the next 12 months. Previously polished brass has been the fashion, but I think alternative finishes such as antique, distressed and satin will become the most popular choices. What factors are driving these trends? Designers are starting to push the boundaries much more than they ever have before and as a result lighting is inevitably becoming a lot more image centric and fashion focussed.

How has interaction with lighting in hotels changed over the past year and how has this influenced lighting design needs? A hotel room is no longer just a room to sleep in, it has become multifunctional, a place to eat, sleep, work and relax and the lighting schemes need to reflect the variety of uses and generate the correct light levels to meet all functions of the guestroom. Guests have dimming functionality at home and expect it in hotels, but they want it to be clearly visible on the product and most of all usable. In my opinion, touch dimming is entirely useless in a hotel room. I have lost count of the number of times I have heard stories of the concierge being called up to the room to explain how to dim the lights, illustrating that there needs to be a distinct balance between design and functionality.

What factors need to be considered when selecting hotel lighting? Design, quality, technology, function – get these factors right and a blend of all four will enhance the ambience of a room. With sustainability remaining a key concern in the hotel industry, how has this affected the lighting sector? Incandescent and halogen light sources have now fallen to less than 10% of hotel lighting, to be replaced mostly by compact fluorescents and to some degree LEDs. Beware that LEDs will not fulfil every lighting function in a hotel especially where the guestrooms are concerned. For example they are great at task lighting, concealed back lighting and mirror lighting but are cost prohibitive and often don’t work so well for table lights, wall light and floor lights.

Dr Andy Davies is the business development manager for indoor controls at Harvard Engineering. The company will be launching its new wireless control and monitoring solution for indoor lighting at LuxLive in November.

All Under Control “Lighting controls provide significant opportunities for the hotel and hospitality sector,” said Andy. “They allow hotel managers to set a mood and improve the atmosphere of a space, showing the hotel in the best possible light and enhancing the experience of guests. Different areas of the hotel are used for different functions, and lighting controls allow the level of light in each location to be tailored to suit. Some spaces, such as the bar, restaurant and conference rooms, will be used for different activities throughout the day, with the lighting needing to be adapted to this.”

Rosco’s Miro at the Theatre Royal

Light Entertainment! Stage Electrics supplied a full architectural LED lighting solution into the theatre, and chose Rosco’s new Miro Cube LED fixtures, because of their compact size and high light output. “The bright output realised from the self-contained, compact, 4” footprint and the minimalist cube design of Rosco’s fixtures made them a natural fit for this installation,” said Paul Roughton,

Business Development Manager for Stage Electrics. “Fourteen Miro Cube 4C fixtures, specified in white housings, were installed throughout the Grand Saloon Bar. Fixtures were mounted above the main doorways as well as hidden on top of the crown moulding to highlight the gold decorative accents designed into the curve of the Grand Saloon’s arched ceiling.”

The Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, first built in 1812 in the heart of London’s West End, has recently completed a £4m restoration. A key component to restoring the historic venue’s Grand Saloon Bar to its original regency-style décor was keeping the look and feel of the space as theatrical as possible. Architect Norman Bragg and Theatre Royal’s Steve McAndrew, the team responsible for illuminating the space, wanted to install efficient LED lighting to showcase the restored architectural elements, but it was imperative that the modern-day fixtures didn’t distract from the 19th century style of the design.

The 4C produces a flattering white light in the space during normal exhibition and performance hours, but can quickly be reprogrammed by the theatre’s staff to match the colour pallet of an evening’s event.

Design Exquis: Roca Edition Retelling a story of design and creation that began over 2,000 years ago, the third edition of the Design Exquis – Roca Edition exhibition is now open at the Roca London Gallery, offering an intriguing twist on the original idea

T

aking the debate about design to a whole new level for 2013, the exhibition’s curators asked music composer Nick Phillips to be the final designer in the process, which involves five designers responding in turn to an object created by their predecessor. Design Exquis – Roca Edition is a series of exhibitions inspired by the collective method of creation, developed by the Surrealists, known as Exquisite Corpse (Cadavre Exquis). Each of the five design teams is given one month to create something new from their

predecessor’s work. None of the designers know who the others are. “What’s very important about Design Exquis is that it’s an activity of reinterpreting, redesigning; doing it again in another way, so I think it’s a very nice conception of design,” said 45 Kilo’s Philipp Schöpfer. “We were really excited when we were asked to participate in Design Exquis – Roca Edition,” added Studio Swine’s Azusa Murakami, “and were really interested in how Exquisite Corpse could be applied to a

design process. We knew we’d be showing in this fantastic gallery space designed by Zaha Hadid and we know she’s done incredible things with concrete in the space, so we wanted to push concrete in a different way.” Design Exquis is on display from 7th September to 16th November at Roca London Gallery, Station Court, London, SW6 2PY.

Underfoot, Understood Flooring in hotels and hospitality venues needs to really punch its weight – as well as achieving the designer’s vision, it has to stand up to some heavy wear and tear! Juliet Davies discusses some of the current trends...

J

ulie Robertson, design manager with Wilton Carpets Commercial, identifies some key style trends influencing hospitality carpet. “Large scale pattern still rules the roost for many locations, used in a similar fashion to statement wallpaper, though carpet does have to work in a far more complex shape and over larger areas,” she said.

Key design themes include a fusion of organic and geometric elements. These styles are also taking a retrospective look at carpet design of the past to create a fresh take on traditional patterns. “Alongside exploration of scale, structure too is coming under the designer’s microscope,” Julie added. “From retro-inspired designs

through to computer generated algorithms and fractals, the end result is an almost hypnotic quality to carpet. Incredibly flexible and adding a retro-edge, these modern geometrics vary between meshing layers to flat two-colour statements with clean chevrons, crystallised structures and triangles balanced by delicate spirographs and lattices. Colour really is the common theme, uniting

in adding depth and a sense of movement to the designs.” “From my perspective it is all about the use of colour,” agreed Anthony Hickman, Design Manager at Ulster Carpets. “Clients are becoming more daring in their choices, and are more confident about using a splash of stronger accent colours, across a broader colour spectrum, which are teamed with neutral base tones.” Ulster Carpets have also been experimenting with using colour intelligently to create the illusion of depth and to add threedimensional properties to their designs, which is proving interesting. “Another shift we are experiencing is the type of carpet being specified,” explained Anthony. “Axminster carpet is recognised as a quality product and is, therefore, the flooring of choice for many hotels. However, on occasions due to budgetary limitations and in order to get a bespoke axminster design for their public areas, a hotel may specify a tufted product for their guest rooms. Ulster work alongside danfloor, an Ulster Group Company, to provide a full and all-encompassing solution for our clients.” Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager at Heckmondwike FB, has seen a trend towards bespoke flooring designs and the use of ‘zoning’ in the hotel and hospitality sector. “Zoning is proving particularly popular in open plan spaces, such as foyers, receptions and social areas, where contrasting colours are being used to define spaces for different purposes,” said Abby. “Blues and purples are proving particularly popular this year, as more interior designers recognise these

Arturo Unique Flooring

44 : in.VOGUE colours for their calming, mellow tones.” Another growing trend spotted by Abby is towards using a variety of patterns, textures and even custom-cut shapes to add visual interest. “In particular,” she said, “we have seen an increase in demand from hotels and country clubs who want their logos incorporated into the flooring design. The robust qualities of our fibre bonded carpet, which will not ravel or fray, has helped us to meet these demands as contractors are able to cut the carpet on site to create striking, bespoke designs.” And if spills are to be expected, vinyl can be ideal! “One of the biggest trends this year has been larger tiles which have proven a particular hit in the hospitality industry,” stated David Bigland, Managing Director of luxury vinyl flooring manufacturer Moduleo. “Larger planks are not only aesthetically pleasing as the grain is not broken up, but they also offer both large and small communal areas the illusion of greater space.” For a larger hotel this could offer a sense of grandeur, while a smaller boutique hotel or family-run restaurant could use this design to accentuate existing space. “Sustainability and durability are crucial considerations for any type of flooring but this is particularly true for specifiers and the hospitality industry,” explained David. “Heavy footfall – which is commonplace for this industry – implies a need for hardwearing flooring but this doesn’t necessarily mean compromising on style.” Trudi Hart of Arturo Unique Flooring says

46 : in.VOGUE that resin really lets design flow in hotel and hospitality locations. “Designers strive to create a sense of flow and unity to a given space, yet often come to a rather blunt edge where wall meets floor. For the more adventurous projects, where creativity is at the fore, resin flooring can overcome this stumbling block, letting designers push the boundaries of conventional floor aesthetics. With Arturo flooring it’s possible to turn the floor into a ‘canvas’ – a somewhat overused analogy but appropriate in this instance! Designers can literally create a work of art on the floor space, flowing designs from wall to floor, from reception desk to queuing area and anywhere in between,” Trudi described. Literally any design, whether geometric pop coloured blocks, graffiti splatter or intricate floral artwork, can be transmitted to the floor and thanks to resin flooring’s tough nature and low maintenance, it also makes a sensible long-term solution in high-traffic locations. Wood flooring can suit any location, traditional or modern, light or dark, is hardwearing and, in many cases, looks even better when a little ‘distressed’! “Heavily rustic wood floors continue to be really popular in hospitality applications. They’re often chosen to contrast with a clean, pale toned wall colour scheme,” described Harvey Booth, UK Sales and Marketing Director of Kährs UK Ltd. “Recently, wood flooring has also become popular as a cladding material, being installed across floors and continuing onto walls, to create a feature around furniture or to cover the entire surface. Stained rustic designs are also very sought after in ‘lime-washed’

Timber can also have impeccable sustainability credentials. “Whilst working with interior designers on both commercial and residential projects, we are increasingly being asked for reclaimed timber for interior wall cladding and feature walls,” said Steve Payne, Victorian Woodworks’ General Manager. “In August we introduced new reclaimed plank products to our Amphora Collection that can be used for walls and floors, and include striking colours and bold textures for commercial areas such as restaurants and bars.”

A Bona Finish For A Green Fir Floor Bona don’t just gloss over a flooring project – they prepare and preserve too!

T

he John Hope Gateway is royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s biodiversity and information centre. it’s a shining example of green construction and sustainability, and the restaurant area features a Douglas Fir floor which has just been finished with Bona traffic HD. the 500m2 floor was sanded and finished over just five days by Fife-based Cleaning Systems UK. the team treated the floor in four sections which allowed the restaurant to remain open while the floor was renovated. the whole area was initially sanded back to bare wood using Bona’s DCS ‘dust free’ sanding system which meant there was no need to ‘tent’ the adjacent mezzanine area. the sanding dust was recycled by being bagged up for use at a local stables! Each section was then primed and given one coat of lacquer at night, ready for two further coats of lacquer the next day. Bona traffic HD was specified for the final two coats to provide the required level of durability in such a busy space and the inevitable food and drink spills. Bona mega Gloss was used for the initial lacquer coat with its glossy finish acting as a wear indicator, to ensure the surface will always be refinished before it is worn down to bare

wood in the future. Bona traffic HD is a very low VoC formulation designed for protecting wood floors in highly trafficked areas. its fast development time means that even busy commercial floors can be put back into full use just 24 hours after application. Cleaning Systems UK specialise in the renovation, cleaning and maintenance of floors in commercial and residential environments, including prestigious royal palaces.

A Quest For Quirkiness Bespoke, luxurious, quirky, contemporary and British. Five words that come to mind when exploring the seven designs appointed to the fifty-five rooms that Suna Interior Design, the award winning boutique interior design consultancy, created for Flemings Mayfair, the four star boutique hotel in London!

S

una Interior Design began working with Flemings Mayfair in the summer of 2012 when the designers were requested to tender a single design that would be trialled over five rooms. The intriguing design that was submitted was the Book Room which features Young & Battaglia’s White Bookshelf Wallpaper. Once this design had been installed Suna Interior Design was asked to create six further designs that would be rolled out over a further fifty rooms. It was a rapidly moving project that began in the summer of 2012 and was launched in May 2013.

Additionally it was requested in the brief that the Flemings Mayfair brand be subtly enhanced through the design.

The brief was to create contemporary designs with an individual touch in each room. The designs were to utilise strong colour and to keep the feel very British, to maintain the personality of the hotel while creating a contemporary atmosphere. There was no specific budget, but guidelines were given to the level of luxury that Flemings Mayfair wanted to achieve: a sumptuous, boutique, four star hotel.

54 : in.BRIEF

The Stamp Room with bespoke wallpaper (Penny Post from Andrew Martin) and cushions Suna Interior Design achieved this by commissioning a line drawing of the frontage of the hotel, which was then transferred onto the cushions. Together with branded labels the cushions form a feature focal point in the rooms. “We always work very closely with our clients in order to achieve the best result. Sensitivity of design is always important and in the case of Flemings Mayfair, we walked through each individual room and a decision was made as to what design would work best in each room. Smaller rooms were given lighter, slightly muted designs,” notes Rebecca Tucker, one of Suna Interior Design’s Directors and lead designer on the project.

Suna Interior Design created a contemporary design by combining traditional British elements then taking design features and reinventing the context in which they are used. The room refurbishment at Flemings Mayfair would not involve any structural changes, focussing rather on soft furnishings, wall papers, artwork and accessories, so Suna Interior Design supplied a selection of quirky items and pieces of interest such as the Dog Artwork, Antler Chandelier, bespoke headboards, line-drawn Flemings Mayfair frontage cushions, ornate framed mirrors, bespoke artwork and of course unique wall and ceiling papers highlighting famous London locations, such as Andrew Martin’s Penny Post wallpaper and Vivienne

Westwood’s tartan paper that would result in the creation of bespoke, luxury design – ultimately embracing a modern take on British quirkiness.

Always ensuring attention to detail, Suna Interior Design is sensitive to the functionality of design and understands the need to employ a practicality of choice. The Flemings Mayfair line drawn cushions are found on the bed, reflective of the colour palette used in the room design. “Flemings Mayfair wanted different designs in their rooms, but they also wanted a continuation, a thread that would run through all of the designs, linking them together,” said Rebecca. “The bespoke cushions with the effective but subtle Flemings Mayfair branding were the ideal solution.”

The Luggage Room features Andrew Martin’s Luggage Wallpaper on the wall with Vivienne Westwood’s tartan on the ceiling

In another of the Luggage Rooms an antler chandelier hangs from the ceiling that is covered in renown British designer, Dame Vivienne Westwood’s tartan paper, working to create a unique, contemporary British feel. The Stripe Room features bespoke wallpaper designed by Suna Interior Design and produced by Tektura. The bright colour palette in the room reflects the colours in the paper on the ceiling, working on the clients brief to utilise bold colours. The purple chandelier reflects the deep purple bedside lights and the oversized turquoise headboard with purple punch buttons adds opulence and luxury. The bed also features a bespoke Flemings Mayfair line-drawn frontage cushion, branded with a Flemings Mayfair label.

Moduleo: As Seen On TV!

Astro Revisits Retro Joel

Leading luxury vinyl flooring manufacturer Moduleo has teamed up with Channel 4’s ‘Double your house for half the money’ to supply 120m2 of flooring in ethnic Wenge from its Transform range for one lucky couple. The show, fronted by Sarah Beeny, demonstrates how to visually enhance your property and create your dream home without breaking the bank. Moduleo flooring is available in both a traditional LVT dryback construction as well as a simple-to-install Click system for added flexibility.

Astro has given a fresh interpretation to one of its own retro success stories with the new Joel range of table lamps, wall lights, floor lamps and pendants. Joel is a contemporary reincarnation of an Astro original, which was based on a classic mid20th century lighting design. Astro’s design team chose polished chrome, matt black and matt cream as the finish options for the steel shade, while the goblet shape remains evocative of a celebrated design era. 60 : in.BRIEF The Shutters Room has a more subtle use of colour. The brief was to create a selection of designs that would cater for all tastes. “This design is more classical while still incorporating the use of colour, and of course the Flemings Mayfair line drawn, branded cushions,” notes Rebecca. The elegant design in the Stamp Room features Penny Post wallpaper from Andrew Martin alongside bespoke made and Flemings Mayfair branded cushions. The Words Room features wallpaper from Linwood that boasts famous London locations and covers both the ceiling and the wall, creating an inviting experience that

welcomes you into a haven within the buzz of London. Suna Interior Design has created seven different designs that have the attraction of looking slightly different and unique in each room because of the difference in the shapes of the rooms. “We want people to feel the fun, luxury, warmth and quirkiness – we want to create a memorable moment every time anyone walks into a room,” said Rebecca. “When someone walks into a room that we have designed, we want them to want to kick their shoes off and relax, as they would at home, ultimately the room should feel like it’s a haven for the occupier. Repeat visitors will either want

the same rooms or they will want to try something different. There is something quite special for everyone. Each of the bespoke features, such as the labels, creates a thread that runs through all of the rooms – further establishing the Flemings Mayfair brand.” This successful project has been praised by clients, press and guests alike. It is bespoke, contemporary British design for a boutique hotel. The result? A truly, British hotel that caters for the individual with something for everyone. Contemporary British design at its bespoke, boutique finest where comfort and luxury are of the utmost importance, and each design and room is reflective of this.
