It is the perfect two-second commute! My house is not only my home but also the Gosling showroom. It showcases the work we do beautifully, and my collections of statues, books and ephemera are a constant

08 : in.HIS LIFE resource for the team and myself. The house is immaculate – I am very fastidious about how it is presented. I start each week with a production meeting with the Gosling team. This critical meeting sets the rhythm and schedule for how we manage the rest of the week. I am often out of the studio and it is imperative the team knows what each other are doing. We handle a huge variety of projects, from individual bespoke pieces to huge double height libraries in Connecticut. We work in hotels, office headquarters, super-yachts and residences across the globe. We talk about the designs and technical drawings, the materials and their applications but also about the dinners and events I am attending throughout the week. It helps to share all this information as many of my evenings are spent with clients or at design-related events. The studio is buzzing and vibrant and I would not have it any other way. We all eat lunch together. It is a great way to hear what is going on in everyone’s lives. On Monday evening I usually schedule most of my charity/trustee meetings, either for Omnibus, the NSPCC or the Maggie’s Centre Pantomime 2017. TUESDAY Tuesday always starts with an hour’s piano tutorial, which is a different mindset. Music is an incredibly important part of my life. I adore my old wind up gramophone and still listen to old 78s, I have a huge collection and some very rare pieces. The sound is so special, nothing can compete.

10 : in.HIS LIFE I spend the early part of the week doing creative work. I have been sketching since I was very young and still hand sketch all my designs and paint the watercolours, which are transposed onto vellum. I have just completed sketching the detailing on a Grand Tour fireplace collection, which will be launched in the autumn by Chesney’s. I am also currently working on a mural in my Egyptian Room in Sycamore House. I would love to have more time to spend on it; I will finish it… one day. WEDNESDAY I go to the opera, ballet or theatre at least once or twice a week. It is a great privilege to live in London and be able to engage in the most amazing art world. I am also incredibly fortunate that many Gosling clients sponsor events at the Royal Opera House and I have many friends from my theatre design days, who are now putting on their own productions. Many gallery private viewings are early in the morning. It is a wonderful way to start the day and have the honour of seeing stunning collections with out the crowds. Exhibitions are inspirational and educational in equal measures and I think this influence is evident in my work. THURSDAY I do try to do a little physical exercise, mainly because the gym is embarrassingly close to the studio. I want to try and make sure I can still fit in my suits and shorts without looking like Jabba the Hut in Star Wars! Much of my work is informed and inspired by museum collections. I am passionate about the Sir John Soane’s Museum, of which I am part of the Patron’s circle. I visit exhibitions regularly but also attend the
Tim’s Plaster room painted in the traditional Soane yellow lecture series put on by the British Museum, Royal Academy and V&A. I am currently working with the V&A and Sir Frederick Parker Collection curating an exhibition at Syon Park for the entrance of Decorex 16. For the exhibition I have invited very big names in the design world to choose a chair, like Sir Paul Smith, Sir James Dyson and the astonishingly brilliant artist, Sir Michael Craig-Martin. It has been very exciting to see their choices and hear what the chair says to them.
FRIDAY I give about two to three lectures a month to a variety of institutions, including major museums and clients like Jaeger Le-Coultre and Cartier. The lectures run to coincide with books I have written. Friday tends to be book day. I try to spend the day researching for my next book, which is will be published by Thames & Hudson. An enormous amount of research goes in to each book but the end result makes the hard work so worthwhile. I hope my books will serve as good reference books for designers and clients who wish

12 : in.HIS LIFE to stay true to a design period. SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS The Gosling client base is worldwide. I travel an exceptional amount and more recently have been spending a lot of time in the USA. I am either handling client installations, like a double height library in Connecticut, which involved flying six British craftsmen to America for five weeks, or promoting my latest book, Classic Contemporary: The DNA of Furniture Design, or launching my latest collection of rugs for The Rug Company. If I am free to spend the weekend at home I will start the day by walking my beloved spaniel, Haichi. I then catch up with friends, take my 1934 Rolls Royce, Betty, for a spin or continue building the train set I started when I was eight. I am passionate about trains and will go out of my way to find pieces of the set on eBay.

I schedule in some piano practise or work on the production of the pantomime. The pantomime is a huge production, which involves all the great and the good from the world of interior design. It is great fun but more importantly a huge charitable fundraiser. I am a fanatical collector of antiquarian books and it is not unusual for me to be chasing around the country sourcing rare books to add to my already huge library. I normally fall into bed every night exhausted but reminded of a comment by my great friend and client, Lord Browne, who said, “The day starts with the prepared mindset of the night before.” www.tgosling.com

Decorex: The Roots Of Design
ArtHide’s Urban Nature
Decorex International 2016, the UK’s leading destination for interior design, will explore the roots of design as its theme for the 2016 edition. This un-missable event is at Syon Park, London, from Sunday 18 September to Wednesday 21 September.

xamining the origins of design, which continue to define and shape the future of the industry, Decorex partnered established names with emerging designers to mark the start of this year’s campaign. One of the first destinations to open the 2016 London Design Festival, Decorex will explore the theme through a series of interactive installations and its popular seminar programme. Visitors to the show will experience how true design is built on a rich heritage, constantly evolving to incorporate new techniques and materials.
London design studio 1508 London has been chosen to create this year’s prestigious Champagne Bar. Examining the roots of design, this year’s show theme, to create a dialogue for the space, expect a design that reinterprets classical architectural principles for a modern audience. Future Heritage will exhibit work by some of the leading names in British craft and showcases new materials and techniques. Curated by renowned design and applied arts critic, Corinne Julius, Future Heritage has been widely credited with raising the profile of craft in the interior. Exclusively for
2016, this select group of 14 makers will be presenting new work and processes that can be commissioned by interior designers and architects for use in their projects, such as lighting, flooring, and sound absorbent, fire resistant textiles. 2016 sees an interesting and diverse selection of names join this year’s popular talks programme; offering debates and an insightful exploration around industry relevant topics, all taking place in the Seminar Theatre sponsored by LuxDeco.

On Sunday, applied arts and design critic, Corinne Julius, will be hosting an informative panel discussion centred on designing your future heritage alongside Sean Sutcliffe, Sebastian Cox and Suzy Hoodless, while Interior Designer, Ben Pentreath, will be hosting a talk on English Houses, centred around his new book, a sequel to his earlier title, ‘English Decoration’ published in 2011. Monday sees Giles Kime of Homes & Gardens host an interactive panel discussion with some of the country’s key designers exploring what defines British interior de-sign and where it’s going in the luxury market. We also see Lucio Longoni and Chris Haslam in conversation regarding The Future of Retailing. On Tuesday discover ‘The evolution of the bath and emerging trends,’ with Giles Kime in conversation with Co-Founder and SVP of Design at Waterworks, Barbara Sallick, and internationally acclaimed interior designer Nina Campbell. On Wednesday, ColourHive, the colour experts behind MIX Magazine, in-depth talk on Colour and Material Trends for Autumn Winter 2017/18, which will explore how these trends inform our colour choices, inspire design concepts and influence mate-rial and surface applications for the decorative market. Taking over four substantial spaces at this year’s Decorex, The New Craftsmen will be presenting ‘Crafthouse’, a series of interactive roomsets exploring the fundamental characteristics of what makes a home by studying the domestic rituals by which we live.

16 : in.SHOW Room 1: Eating Nic Webb will highlight the processes and versatility of making with clay, with the space showcasing a selection of his collectible clay vessels and functional pieces for eating and serving food, while also featuring large sculptural furniture pieces ren-dered in scorched wood. Room 2: Bathing Makers Malgorzata Bany and Jochen Holz will consider the bathing space, working in both Jesmonite and glass. Room 3: Sleeping Combining both Pedro da Costa Felgueiras and Georgia Kemball’s passion and knowledge of historic interiors and textiles, the space will display a strong use of rich colour, texture and pattern. Pedro’s lacquers and embellishments will be crafted from hand-ground pigments and minerals, while he will also be bringing to the fore the ancient craft of lead applications.

Room 4: Working Serving as the studio for Crafthouse’s architect, the working area represents the hub from which all the other spaces were conceived. The studio will be encased in willow paneling hand-crafted by Hilary Burns, and braided handles by Aimee Betts, while furniture designer Gareth Neal has collaborated with basket maker Annemarie O’Sullivan to present the third iteration of his line of chairs exclusive to The New Craftsmen. Experience 100% Design 100% Design, the UK’s largest design trade show, returns to Olympia London on the 21st to 24th September. The show forms the commercial heart of London Design Festival, presenting leading national and international exhibitors with ideas, products and innovations for the domestic, workplace and built environments, alongside a special focus on emerging brands.

eflecting 100% Design’s focus on quality and inspiration, this year’s theme is ‘Experience,’ which will be explored across the show through specially commissioned installations, immersive experiences and sensory experiments. Visitors can physically engage with the latest product innovations, establish new business relationships and network with design professionals. Talks with 100% Design will be curated by the Design Museum as part of their ‘on loan’ campaign with activity out and about in Kensington until the museum opens there on 24th November 2016. Focussing on quality and depth, the talks present thought leaders in the industry, deliver agendasetting keynotes alongside panel discussions exploring trends in contemporary practice as well as the future of design. The programme will be presented in a specially-commissioned auditorium, designed by Miska Miller-Lovegrove. A separate talks programme focussing on professional development will be presented in the Forum. Making its debut at London Design Festival 2016 is LuxuryMade, a new show dedicated to contemporary decorative interiors. Staged alongside 100% Design close to the site

London Design Fair: Join Up! In 2016, Tent London and sister event Super Brands London will return to Truman Brewery in vibrant East London under the new umbrella of London Design Fair, on 22nd to 25th September.
F
or the first time, the fair will be staged over three floors of this iconic industrial space rather than two. Its 12,500m2 will showcase 250 independent designers and brands, 200 global brands, and 15 country pavilions in ever-more creative formats. This will be clear to see in one of Tent London 2016’s most exciting new installations. “We were invited to propose a project by the trade commission of the Trentino region of Italy,” explained Jimmy MacDonald, London Design Fair founder and director. “The result is Trentino Collaborations, which connects four British designers with four Trentino-based manufacturers to create new products for retail.” Max Lamb is producing granite furniture with a quarry company, Sebastian Cox is working with hard wood rather than green wood for the first time, using a weaving technique from Trentino, Lucy Kurrein is designing leather upholstery, and Giles Miller will take his first foray into natural stone tiles. The four collections will be shown in specially commissioned wooden structures, inspired by largescale, natural sculptures shown at Arte Sella, Trentino’s open-air art exhibition that is marking its 20th anniversary in 2016. The New Craftsmen and Crafts Council will be bringing the immersive Nature Lab to the London Design Fair. Showing as part of the new British Craft Pavilion, Nature Lab was

For the first time, London Design Fair has invited a country to exhibit, bringing its wealth of design and manufacturing expertise to a global audience for the first time. India will unveil the best of its contemporary design in This Is India, which is co-curated by Jimmy MacDonald and Spandana Gopal, founder of London-based studio and lifestyle brand Tiipoi. The London Design Fair regularly works with countries in the lead-up to Tent London, advising on presentation and curation. In 2016, for example, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts will show a greater percentage of work from its talented alumni, rather than focusing solely on graduate work. Further confirmed countries include China, Scotland Craft & Design, Swedish Design Pavilion, Nordic Design Collective, Portugal, 100% Norway, Galicia and Design in South Italy’ . Throughout the last decade, Tent London has been known as the place to spot new talent. Names to watch in 2016 include New Swedish brand Tingest have just joined the Swedish Design Pavilion launching a new collection at the Fair; Finnish furniture design studio Maiju Uski; Studio davidpompa, a young interdisciplinary studio based in Mexico and Austria; Hay-on-Wye-based Barnby Design, a studio that combines traditional furniture-making techniques with timeless, modern style; Danish product design practice Troels Flensted; Italian designer collective Portego; sustainable product designers out for space; Japanese design curators Native & Co; British textile and surface designers Sunny Todd Prints;

ith the support of the King’s Cross development partnership, designjunction will take over the area for its flagship show during 22nd to 25th September 2016. The 67-acre King’s Cross site has a rich history and a unique appeal. This former industrial heartland is being transformed into one of the capital’s most exciting destinations, with the redevelopment of the
area creating 1,900 new homes, 20 new streets, 10 new public parks and squares and 3 million square feet of commercial office space as well as cultural attractions. The theme of the 2016 designjunction show will be ‘Immersed in Design’, with the move to the larger King’s Cross site marking the next chapter for designjunction and the creation of the King’s Cross Design District at this year’s London Design Festival.
designjunction has announced plans to create a super façade structure at its London show in King’s Cross this September (22–25) – designed by leading architectural firm Satellite Architects, alongside Danish design curators, Icons of Denmark. The teams will be using the modular and versatile GRID system by Danish designer Peter J. Lassen. The London-based practice, which has worked across cultural, residential, and commercial projects for high-profile clients
in.SHOW : 27 including the River Cottage, has designed a spectacular 70m long by 7m high façade entrance to Cubitt House, the trade destination at designjunction during this year’s London Design Festival. The façade will be the world’s largest installation of GRID made possible by structural engineers Elliott Wood. designjunction 2016 will host four distinct exhibition sites against the industrial backdrop of King’s Cross. The centrally located Granary Square will feature eight Monopoly-style houses for headline sponsored projects and installations. Cubitt House, a two-floor pavilion in Lewis Cubitt Square, will have a strong trade focus, featuring the best in contemporary lighting in the ‘lightjunction’ as well as furniture from international design brands. Key brands include Haberdashery, Lindholt, Northern Lighting, String, Kirkby Design, Modus and Rubn. The Canopy will be a temporary pop-up venue for premium retail brands, including everything from fashion accessories to technology, textiles and stationery. Located between Central Saint Martins, UAL and Waitrose, the large market area will take shape under a heritage protected wrought iron structure and will attract retail buyers and design-savvy consumers. The Crossing, running through the centre of Central Saint Martins, UAL, will house immersive installations including a striking reception area and exhibition space created from Dinesen flooring. Young British brand, Tala will present their new LED bulbs in a 12-metre-high rainforest styled installation, whilst Native Union will showcase

Block Design’s Mountain Fold Clock in pink their latest technology products. Both Granary Square and The Crossing will remain accessible to the public throughout September’s festival. A stellar line-up of UK and international design brands – both established and emerging – have been confirmed to take part including: Design House Stockholm, String, Life Space UX by Sony, Bolon, Another Country, Channels, Morgan, Little Greene, Brokis, Very Good & Proper, TON, Dyke & Dean, Haberdashery, Native Union, Northern Lighting, Rubn, Vita Copenhagen, and Melin Tregwynt. Transport for London will also return to the show launching three new collaborations. The designjunction chevron symbol will spread throughout the site - acting as a recognisable wayfinding tool to maximise visibility and footfall as the event opens to visitors in September.

Front Of House To create a striking impression for its national and international visitors, global design event designjunction commissioned London-based Satellite Architects to create a 70m long by 7m high super façade entrance to its trade destination in King’s Cross for the London Design Festival. Stewart Dodd, founder of Satellite Architects, explains how it came to life.

ow do you hide a two storey, aesthetically challenged tent in the middle of King’s Cross? This was the problem Deborah Spencer, founder of designjunction, set Satellite Architects when she invited the practice to look at Cubitt House, designjuction’s trade exhibition which will hold more than 100 leading international furniture and lighting brands during the festival. This two-storey temporary structure, spanning over 2,500m2 on Lewis Cubitt Square, will sit on the border of the latest phase of construction with the King’s Cross redevelopment. “When we met, Deborah talked about the idea that Frieze London has adopted for the last few years of getting an architect in to

design its pavilion. We came up with this grid structure for the front of the building that could be used to display products from the show itself,” explained Stewart.

Satellite’s design has also taken into account the idiosyncrasies of the site. The façade’s scale reflects the old railway shed adjacent to it, while the architect also had to deal with the line of trees sitting between the tent and the edge of the pavement. Stewart elected to pull the façade out to the street, effectively sandwiching the trees in between it and the pavilion. Meanwhile the grid system means that the tent is effectively cloaked behind a wall of pixels but visitors are still aware of the ‘secret garden’ that now lies behind the facade. “You walk through this skin, this grid, and you end up seeing that it has trees behind it,” said Stewart. Initially, the architect was going to specify
a scaffold system that’s often used in conventional exhibitions but then Spencer introduced him to GRID by Danish designer Peter J. Lassen – brought to the UK by Danish
design curators, Icons of Denmark. Used more regularly indoors, the system is based on a 40 x 40 x 40cm basic module made from nylon reinforced with fibreglass.

Satellite’s façade will use over 4,000 of these lightweight, versatile pieces, changing colour from black at the base to white at the top. The GRID system will hold an array of acrylic panels supplied by Dutch company PyraSied, orientated to reflect or provide glimpses of the foliage beyond. The architects are using GRID as it allows them to build with maximum freedom and simplicity. It can be assembled in various ways in height, width and length, and the cubic frame is produced with mounting holes making the system versatile. “The facade is intended to reflect the temporary nature of designjunction as an exhibition and the developing surroundings, combining natural and artificial elements,” concluded Stewart. Providing visitors with a stunning entrance to the exhibition, the façade will be the
world’s largest installation of GRID, thanks to structural engineers Elliott Wood. Satellite’s façade will be suspended over a scaffold framework, constructed by awardwinning London design and build firm Oktra. Expected to be built in just three days, the fully counter-levered scaffold design features over 463 linear metres of poles to support the bespoke grid super-structure. This impressive system will be constructed flat, then lifted into position and tied back into the Cubitt House pavilion to leave a seamless flat elevation.
Visitors to Cubitt House at designjunction will be fully immersed in design as they enter the building under a stepped down gridded canopy between mirrored panels. Having passed though the exhibition, visitors can also enjoy a secret garden space which features a popup café furnished with Deadgood’s new Naked collection, as well as outdoor lighting and plants supplied by Artemide and Bloomon. www.satellitearchitects.com www.thedesignjunction.co.uk

BIID Partners With Decorex The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is once again partnering with luxury interiors trade show Decorex International from 18th to 21st September.
N
ow in its 39th year, Decorex has become a key feature of the London Design Festival and is a must-visit for design professionals and those passionate about luxury design. The four-day event is returning to historic Syon Park, with 400 exhibitors launching new collections. The theme of this year’s show is ‘The Roots of Design’ which will consider the origins of design, the processes involved and examine the influences that have challenged its DNA. The BIID will be hosting a series of engaging talks at Decorex 2016 which will explore this theme. BIID at the Decorex Seminar Theatre On Monday 19th September at 2pm, BIID member Tim Gosling will be discussing “How to design and create the heritage of bespoke furniture using rare materials and the latest technology.’’ In this talk, Tim will be demonstrating the innovative and unusual way he uses a variety of materials in his designs. BIID President Susie Rumbold will be chairing an engaging and informative panel discussion at the Decorex seminar theatre on Tuesday 20th September at 11am.
