Aestheticians from around the US recently travelled to Secaucus, NJ to learn from the master of aesthetics herself – Repêchage CEO and Founder, Lydia Sarfati! Chewton Glen awarded Spa Hotel of the Year The inaugural Top 100 Hoteliers’ Hotels list has been unveiled, featuring the favourite hotels in the UK as voted by the best hotel operators in the industry, when The Caterer, the leading publication in the hospitality and catering industry, in partnership with Sky, asked the UK’s top hoteliers to reveal their favourite hotels across the UK. Chewton Glen took the top spot for Spa Hotel of the year. he Body Retreat was founded in 2010 by Julie Brealy and Juls Abernethy and is the only UK Health Retreat that is run exclusively by women for women. Going from strength to strength, The Body Retreat now runs 28 individual residential retreats each year. Tell me about your ethos? At The Body Retreat we understand from both personal experience and from our years of study, training and expertise that when it comes to losing weight, getting fit, managing stress or any other well being goal, women need to attend to both their mental and emotional health at the same time as their physical bodies – so The Body Retreat does just that! Keeping the group sizes small (between 5-10 women on any retreat) means that clients are guaranteed an

individual and personalised retreat experience. Describe your locations The Body Retreat runs in private accommodation in venues in Somerset, Dorset, Andalusia and France. Our main property is in the Tone Valley in Somerset. We have chosen our retreat locations and venues for their stylish accommodation, inspiring locations and relaxing facilities so that clients can get the most out of their retreat. Our venues are all different – reflecting the local area in which they are based but sharing some important common features; complete privacy, on-site spa facilities and/or pool, relaxed accommodation, spacious bedrooms and smart en-suites, quality bed linen and bathrobes – the attention to detail is a constant. We have a gorgeous indoor spa area

What are your future plans? This year Moddershall Oaks has decided to give back to our staff the amazing service that they provide for us. We are focusing massively on creating a brand new suite of offices, which will be central to the business, as well as a brand new staff room with great facilities for staff to enjoy their break. This is to thank our staff for the continued hard work that they do for us, as well as really driving our employee engagement strategy to make sure that our staff are happy, motivated and enthusiastic. We hope to begin a whole new internal training programme for all staff, to incentivise them to achieve our core Vision and Values, which will ensure great staff positivity and therefore

retention. Moddershall Oaks is also keen to maximise on the concept of well-being, and has some great (but top secret!) plans for how we are going to really push and drive a healthy lifestyle, without the boring iceberg lettuce, monotonous gym sessions and ‘slim’ shakes. PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS Putting safety first means a more relaxing experience for all...

teven Gunnip, Director, Salon Evolution, explains that with a few simple routines, you can easily improve the safety of your staff and clients, and the security of your premises. “Businesses lose millions of pounds annually – and may even fail due to losses related to crime,” he said. “Spas are included in this statistic, and may be at a security risk for burglary, theft and injury due to employee negligence and other factors. Spa owners should take steps to avoid incidents and losses by tightening lax security procedures within the salon environment.” Spa managers can ameliorate these risks by including the following points in their safety and security assessments: Background Checks Owners should perform background checks on all potential employees before hiring them to work in the spa. If an applicant has a history of theft or other criminal activity, you should investigate them more thoroughly before initiating the hiring process. Employee Handbook Write an employee handbook to

document the rules and procedures of the spa. Distribute the handbook to all employees and have regular meetings to discuss security measures and address any problems that may arise from employee disregard of salon rules.

BRAND YOUR BOUTIQUE The interior design of your salon or spa tells a client a lot about you – make sure it’s a good tale!

H

igh Definition’s CEO and Co-Founder, Nilam HolmesPatel, has recently worked alongside an interior design company to bring to life her vision for the new boutique in Notting Hill. We ask her about the inspiration behind the design, and how it’s working out… What was the inspiration behind the interior style? The interior is an extension of our High Definition style, with a monochrome colour scheme, and our signature black and white stripe – which is also used on our High Definition make up packaging – making an appearance at the pedicure station on both the walls and the seating, and the manicure station walls, to really highlight our brand’s style. Which products/materials were chosen, and why? The materials and products chosen were all true to the High Definition style – we used high gloss black acrylic, which reflects the product packaging and all the High Definition academies’ furniture. As with all the academies and boutiques, all of the furniture is bespoke.

Was there anything in the brief that caused any issues? If so, what were they and how were they overcome? The original layout had to change once we started putting the furniture into the boutique. As it is a working space, we noticed that the flow of traffic within the boutique wasn’t right, but all of our furniture is modular so we could change the layout quite easily to make sure it was perfect. How long did the overall interior design and fit take? It was in development for around a year, and then the fit itself took approximately two months. What are the top three interior features? 1. The pedicure pods are black and white stripe leather – which is a great contrast to the high gloss black acrylic surroundings. 2. Venetian plaster was used on the walls and ceilings – this adds a really high quality finish. 3. The modular furniture ensures that the layout can be altered easily depending on what the boutique requires.

How many workstations are there? We have three brow chairs, one manicure station, two pedicure pods, and two treatment rooms. How many technicians can work here? There can be up to eight technicians doing treatments at any one time. Where can we find the new boutique? MY LIFE… Steve Douch has been a professional make-up artist for 13 years, starting off in special effects, theatrical, fashion and photographic make-up, and has now created STV Cosmetics, a range of fantastic multi-use make-up products that are ideal for any professional make-up artists’ kit. What’s your background – have you always worked in health/beauty? I initially started work as a carpenter. It seems an unlikely path, but when I first left school I wanted to do something arty or involving crafts. My uncle offered me a job in construction as an apprentice carpenter, but it didn’t appeal to my artistic side enough. My cousin taught make-up at a local college and had just branched into special effects, photographic and media make-up. I have always had a fascination with horror films and the making of the meanies, so I asked if I could try it out. She suggested that I took a beauty and special effects make-up course, and through some family contacts I became an apprentice to a make-up artist that worked in film and theatre, and my career began! Fast forward a few years and I started working with salons and make-up ranges until here I am today, with my very own range of products and training courses.

How do you start your day? I wake up bright and early at 6am and go to the gym. I head into the office for around 8am. Food is the part I forget – so I am more than likely to be tempted into a bacon butty! Do you stop for lunch or graze? As I teach a lot I will usually have lunch while the students are also on lunch. I try my best to eat a balanced diet, however, I’m not always so successful, especially when you have to eat fast as you have a lot to do! How do you unwind? I can usually be found at home with my fiancé and cat, snuggled up watching rubbish television or movies. What’s the secret to your success? It’s not a secret, but I am dedicated to my work. I strongly believe that the more you put in the more you get out, so I make sure I give it my all.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given? And what advice would you pass on? Network! The old adage is true, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know – new clients and connections can be found in all sorts of places! Do you take nutritional supplements? No, I have tried a few times, but I just forget to take them. What do you think is the most exciting thing to happen recently in your sector of the spa industry? I has to be the explosion of social media. This massive format enables businesses of any size to have more contact with the consumer.
