he original 18th century country Manor House that is home to Galgorm Resort & Spa has been sympathetically restored, refurbished and expanded to become a deluxe 4 star hotel, with the spa area and suites finished in a contemporary style using the highest quality materials. The merging with the original classic splendour of the original building has created a modern but classic setting. Situated alongside the flowing and tranquil River Maine, Galgorm’s location plays an important role in all aspects of its offering. Not only is its decor very much focused on bringing the outside in, through the use of natural materials such as wood, oak and marble, but the spa’s treatment menu and the resort’s

facilities are influenced by its close proximity to nature. “Our signature treatment is currently our Maine Massage; named after the river which runs through our grounds,” explains Spa Manager, Melissa O’Neill, in reference to a 55 minute full body massage carried out using specially blended aromatherapy oils to ease away tension. “We are also working with our product houses to create additional treatments exclusive to Galgorm,” she continues. “We are committed to providing luxurious treatment experiences and our product houses fit with our values in this way. We use Aromatherapy Associates, Voya, Eve Lom and OPI, and we like to surprise and delight our spa guests with new and

exciting offerings. “Our location, facilities and dedication to providing genuine hospitality and customer service makes Galgorm so special,” she explains. Located in an area close to many of Northern Ireland’s most renowned scenic attractions, Galgorm uses this to its guests’ advantage. “We partner with various local attractions and activity providers to create packages that offer clients an all-round experience,” says O’Neill. “This way, they not only enjoy our facilities but also get to see some of the history, landscape and culture of the area, such as Titanic Belfast and Giants Causeway. “We have a dedicated Concierge App that we use to inform guests of things to see and do onsite and in the local

area during their stay and to promote specific offers to our loyal client base,” she continues. “We also market through the social platforms of Facebook and Instagram with our ‘Facebook Monday’ deals that reward loyalty. As well as this, we also promote off-line with trade and consumer shows, print advertising and direct marketing as well as PR. “Our outdoor spa facilities, of which there is more to come, is another area which sets Galgorm apart,” adds O’Neill. “This is set to improve further, with extensive development of an outdoor thermal village being carried out to coincide with our new bedroom wing opening in August 2015.” Galgorm’s current thermal facilities – including an outdoor hot tub and Jacuzzi pool,

experience showers, aroma grotto, ice fountain and rustic wood sauna – are impressive, offering guests the chance to experience the ancient rituals of bathing in cold, cool, warm and hot environments to aid detoxification, purification and relaxation. “Our group treatment facilities – The Boudoir – is also a unique offering,” O’Neill explains. Designed for groups of up to 15 guests, The Boudoir offers a beautiful and calming environment in which guests can celebrate special occasions, making it ideal for birthdays, family gatherings or as a venue for a bridal party ahead of the big day. Guests are able to choose from specially designed packages for the ultimate pampering party within a private

luxurious relaxation area and dedicated treatment space. Away from the spa, the resort is extensive in terms of its facilities, allowing visitors to experience a full spectrum of activities from their stay at Galgorm. “Set in 163 acres of parkland, we offer fishing, walking, hiking and access to world class golf with Galgorm Castle, Royal Count Down and Royal Portrush in close proximity,” concludes O’Neill. “The resort currently has 74 guestrooms with an additional 48 being added by summer 2015. We have three onsite restaurants; 2AA Rosette River Room; Gillies Bar & Grill for casual dining and Fratelli for rustic Italian. We also offer afternoon tea in our beautiful new conservatory with spectacular views over the River Maine.”

Melissa O’Neill and her team Senior Spa Manager, Melissa O’Neill, has over 20 years’ experience in the spa and wellness industry. Having started out as a myotherapist, Melissa initially ran her own business working with national and international sporting teams and athletes before gaining extensive international experience in 4 and 5 star spas in destinations such as Australia and the Middle East. She has since progressed through the ranks at Galgorm, working up through the spa from a therapist, receptionist, Assistant Spa Manager, Spa Reservation Manager, and now, Spa Manager.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Lynne Baker Lynne Baker is the Director of Calla Distribution Ltd.

S

omeone asked me what the abbreviation CEO stands for. In my case it stands for Chief Everything Officer! The great thing about running Calla Distribution Ltd is that my working life is so varied. I work from home which means that the commute is brilliant. No traffic jams, no roadworks; just the occasional delay if my cat Jess decides to block my way into the bathroom. The downside is that there really is no escape from the work! I also work in my salon on a part time basis because I think it’s really important to keep in touch with clients, and to learn what they want from beauty treatments. A typical day goes like this: I wake up stupidly early and deal with whatever queries and orders have come in overnight, and am usually at my desk by 7am (often in my jamas…). My team doesn’t arrive until half nine, when we will have a quick meeting so that we’re all aware of what’s going on, what issues and queries have arisen and what needs to be done that day. If I have no clients in the salon then I’ll make a start on the company administrative tasks. It has been said that I’m something of a control freak. Guity as charged; I like to know what’s going on with our customers, with our suppliers and with the way we interact with both. In a former life I was an IT manager so I’m often found under a desk sorting out cables and switches. We might be a little organisation but we have all the IT

infrastructure of a much larger company. Business continuity is very important; we want to be able to service our clients even in the event of a system problem! Reaching out to our existing customer base is key. We send out regular email marketing to let them know about new products, promotions, education articles and industry news. We also engage actively with our potential new customers. We have ad campaigns running in several publications and on online forums. I chat regularly to the editors to work out how best we can reach new markets. I’m always on hand to answer any customer queries about the best

treatment for a specific skin issue as well. I’m a registered general nurse by profession, and I trained as a beauty therapist 20 years ago, but I never stop learning about skin, products and treatments, as well as marketing and financial stuff! I take time each day to read about new ingredients, products, and the industry buzz. At the end of the working day, which can be anywhere between 6 and 9pm, I will be found on the sofa, with my little cat and some lemongrass and ginger tea, mainlining box sets on the telly. INNOVATE, INNOVATE, INNOVATE

I

t amazes me that many of us do things the same way, each and every day of our lives. We get into a routine and we operate on auto pilot for most of the day. Think about it; if you drive to work, can you honestly remember every detail about your journey from this morning? You were in charge of a large piece of solid metal, moving at an average of 40 miles per hour, with other people doing the same thing coming in every direction – just a few feet away – and you won’t remember most of the journey. Same with a bus or tube ride; you probably arrived at work and went into the office or treatment room and don’t even remember who was sitting next to you. Routine can be comfortable but more often, forgettable. If you do the same – same drive, same route and same music – you start to become unaware. In the same way, if every time your client has a massage or a facial and you do exactly the same each time, then they begin to not notice how wonderful it is, how relaxed it makes them and how much better they feel. They get into a rut and soon they don’t really remember if it was good or bad – it just ‘was’ – and if it just ‘was’ then why book or stay again? Think about your advertising or your posters and offer notices at work. Are they less effective than they used to be? Probably, because they have been done the same way or designed the same way and put in the same place for as long as you can remember. Next time you want your customers to notice a difference or read something different, then do it differently and see how the response increases. Making them notice will keep their interest. Making a 1% difference every day means that every 100 days you have completely revitalised the way you do things. Look for an innovation, a new stroke, maybe a new way to remove cleanser or a better support for your

client’s legs in a pedicure. Next time you replace your towels, choose a different colour, introduce a new technique, warm your massage oils and apply with a brush, book onto a course and learn one new technique or even just the most recent and up to date one. I’m not saying introduce a whole new range; just make very small, inexpensive innovations on what you currently do. Change things up a little and see how big the response is. Challenge your staff to suggest new ways to do things and then choose one per month to implement. A change is as good as a rest, so take a rest and see how your business changes, for the better. www.janescrivner.com

Aimee Loves… Make Up by HD Brows® I was a bridesmaid at a wedding this month and wanted to find that balance between looking made up enough for the inevitable 4000 photos and not so made up that I looked like I was just stopping off at the wedding en route to a rave. I decided to make up my entire face (minus mascara) in HD Brows products, and I loved the result. The products come in classic black, good quality boxes and the items themselves are cased in black high-gloss packaging. It looks stylish, unfussy and very good quality – exactly what you would expect from a company such as HD Brows. Firstly, I used the Eyeshadow Palette. This is available in three shade options – Bombshell, Foxy and Vamp – but Foxy, with its five complementary shades in neutral, browns and gold-based tones is most suited to my medium hair and skin. I absolutely love this palette. The shadows are a mixture of matte and satin textures which makes it the perfect set for achieving different looks. I found that the shades were incredibly easy to blend and they worked perfectly together. I managed to get the exact, quite subtle look I was after but the colour could easily be built up for a more dramatic result. Most importantly, it lasted all day with no creasing; particularly impressive because I forgot to apply an eyeshadow primer – something that usually I can’t get by without. On to the foundation, and I used the Fluid Foundation in Buff. I knew I needed a base that would give high, long lasting coverage and this didn’t disappoint. I applied the product with a brush in a thin layer and was immediately impressed with the natural but excellent coverage. I built up the layers to a more heavy finish but it was super easy to blend and never at any point went cakey or collected in my pores – something that I find can happen when trying to achieve this kind of look. Even though I used a lot of product, its semimatte finish made my skin look radiant and it lasted all day with no re-application. A definite new foundation

favourite. To complete the look, I used the Bronzer in light/medium for a healthy, natural sunkissed glow, and the Powder Blush in Cosmo – a soft and creamy blush in the perfect shade for me – it gives a strong pop of peachy/pink colour but isn’t too girly. I really love the collection. It’s a gorgeous range of excellent quality products that are actually worth their mid-high end price tags.
