We need to look hard at those processed products and really think about the ingredients they use, how they are made – and why they look like they do.
The truth is most pet foods these days are made with a blend of powdered meat and bone meals, highly processed grains and various protein derivatives sourced from the bits of animals that wouldn’t normally arrive on your dinner plate. This is everything from "beak to hoof and even including feathers." They are also packed with cereals and starchy carbohydrates, which aren’t part of a carnivores natural diet. They are processed and cooked to high temperatures and have to then contain synthetic, artificial vitamin supplements in order to comply with the regulations for being labelled as complete. The resulting mix of processed cereals and protein derivatives is often then mixed with flavour enhancers, simply to encourage your pet to eat foods that they instinctively would otherwise know, are not meant for them. So, even though it may appear your pet enjoys the food, and you may think the food you are using looks natural, chances are it isn’t. And your beloved pet could just be getting by on a diet of junk.

How things have changed for me. Having completed my own research and education into cat and dog nutrition and biology. I have now been advocating raw food for pets for 15 years. I use it for all types of skin disease; atopy, pollen and house mite allergies, itching problems, scurf and greasy coat issues. I've seen dogs who haven't had a firm stool in their whole lives transformed in two days after going onto a raw food diet. Dogs with constipation, anal gland issues, diarrhoea, IBS, fussy eaters, obesity, dogs that can't put on weight, you name it, I've treated it successfully with a raw food diet. More recently it's become apparent that dogs with aggression, anxiety and hyperactivity issues can do really well on raw food; calming down and enjoying food for the first time in their lives.

Feeding Tips
General guidelines suggest your pet should have around 2-3% of his or her body weight in food each day. However they are only guidelines. It’s much more important to tailor the amount you feed according to:

The quality nutritional content may mean they eat less than they did on previous foods. Sometimes dogs will self-regulate and give themselves a day off. This is very common, so don’t worry. If for any reason your dog shows other symptoms of ill health always consult your vet.
Always use fresh meat for your pet for each meal. Once chewing bones have had the meaty sections chewed off you can keep these a little longer and even rinse under boiling water if need be to keep them safer & clean.
Always keep an eye on your pets if they have been given a chewing bone to eat or play with.
Once defrosted, do not re-freeze your pet’s food.

These guidelines use the most common raw feeding guideline of 2-3% of a dog or cats body weight. Dependant on your pets lifestyle you may feel he or she needs more or less than these guidelines. Our foods protein and fat contents are balanced to meet the pet food industry standards, foods higher in fat content can often seem to provide better value for money but are in fact providing less nutrition and proteins needed for your pet to repair, grow and stay healthy.

Whilst raw is best, we understand that raw isn’t practical for every pet on every day of the year. That’s why we developed a range of pouches and cans that have exactly the same high quality meats, vegetables, fruits, and single source grains or potato. We mix the ingredients fresh and then gently steam cook them inside their packaging rather than cooking them outside and then pouring them in. By doing so we ensure the nutrients are retained within the pouch or can and not lost through the cooking process. You really will see the difference with a Natures Menu can or pouch. Cats were eating raw food long before we domesticated them. It was their talent for catching rodents that bought them into our lives and ultimately into our homes and onto our sofas. Tinkerbell’s owners were disappointed with the fillers and low quality ingredients they found were in a lot of the cat foods on the market. They were keen to try a diet that was so close to what nature intended. Tinkerbell is fed around 180gm or 26 a day. She also has days when she isn’t as hungry as others, as cats are incredibly good at self regulating their food intake.

Her owners chose the raw diet as they knew it would provide a natural balance of nutrients and especially minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. They are convinced she is a calmer puppy than their friends’ boxer puppy and were keen to share that the cost of feeding a raw diet is not as high as most people think! Lily eats 2 meals of Puppy Raw Complete and also enjoys a meaty chewing bone such as a turkey neck.

PUPPY Feeding Guidelines
Puppies Aged 0-3 Weeks should be drinking the mother's milk to obtain essential nutrients, enzymes and essential fatty acids.
Puppies Aged 3-4 Weeks Need 3 meals a day. Feed around 8% of the puppy's body weight per day. Mash the foods up very well. If the pups have stopped drinking milk from their mother try adding goat’s milk to their diet too, as this is very easy for puppies to digest and full of nutrients. Puppies need a little help digesting their foods at this stage, so sometimes it is better for them to have the feeds lightly cooked. This will mimic the regurgitation that mother dogs provide for their pups in the wild, making the food more digestible for them.
Puppies Aged 6-12 Weeks
At this stage you can begin to introduce a small amount of raw bone within the meal, such as chicken wings. No large raw bones just yet. Most pups will begin to wean from their mother at 3-4 weeks and be weaned completely at 7-8 weeks. They will still benefit from some motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s milk even up to 12-weeks old, if she has any milk left, or any tolerance left to feed them!
Puppies Aged Over 12 Weeks (3-Months) Feed 2 meals a day. You should be able to feed all the variety of adult raw foods by this stage. Introduce raw meaty bones now too.
Puppies Aged Over 4 Months Begin to reduce the amount your puppy eats per day. Aim to reach 6% of body weight and then 4% by the time the puppy is 6-months old.Continue to gradually reduce the % of food your puppy eats as he grows up. Dropping from 4% of his body weight per day to 3% and then down to 2% by the time he is a year old.
Top Tips The guidelines are just that, guidelines. And they are best tailored to fit the activity levels, health, metabolism, lifestyle and importantly breed size of your dog as an individual.
Many of our customers who own larger breed adult dogs only feed 1% or 1.5% of their body weight per day and their dogs thrive on this amount.
