Hello boys! Fudge stylists set the latest male grooming trends at London Collections: Men

T

he fashion world was left in no doubt that the UK is a leading authority when it comes to male grooming after the capital’s recent instalment of London Collections: Men. Partnered by British hair care brand Fudge, the three-day male-dedicated event was a riot of fashion and style, which saw the unveiling of the hottest men’s looks for SS14. Fudge creative director John Vial and James Pecis led a team of stylists backstage at eight shows including seasoned favourites Richard Nicoll, Meadham Kichhoff, James Long and Christopher Shannon as well as Katie Eary, Lou Dalton, HOM and Sibling. With designers drawing inspiration from everything from military, ‘90s grunge and dandyism to the Royal Air Force and Japan, the hair team created a diverse

range of looks ranging from commercial to the almost avant-garde. Show highlights included the swimwear collection at HOM by Jonathan Saunders where scantily clad Adonises stepped onto the catwalk looking like they’d just left the beach. The hair team created seasoaked hair using their fingers and Liquid Erekt, Sea Salt Spray and Classic Clay Wax. Meanwhile, the models at Meadham Kirchhoff’s Europe-at-war themed show were split into two camps: a clean Russian sailor of the past and an innocent carefree boy. The first look was short and sharp, created with a deep parting using Hair Gum, Skyscraper and Head Shine while the second nodded to ‘90s-esque curtains and was styled using Fudge Hair Varnish and Shaper Lite. But the fashion-forward hair looks weren’t confined to the catwalk: Fudge also hosted its own dedicated salon and

lounge area inside The Hospital Club in Covent Garden as well as a second styling station at Victoria House. Both venues offered free blow-dries, styling and dry cuts attracting 600 visitors including the likes of TV presenters Dermot O’Leary and Will Best, model David Gandy, fashion VIPs, press, buyers, and London Collections: Men committee members. “Everyone involved was brilliant – from the stylists assisting in the Fudge Fix to those assisting backstage,” comments Vial. “I think we really pushed the boundaries this time and displayed such creativity – for example the Christopher Shannon show, which saw us covering the models’ hair with glitter. This season also saw us double the shows that we were involved while still working with designers in keeping with Fudge brand. It was a pleasure to work with everyone involved.”

INDUSTRY UPDATE Men at work: Aveda Institute launches pop-up barbershop The Aveda Institute in Covent Garden erected a pop-up barbershop in its waiting area last month to coincide with London Collections: Men. The standalone salon space catered for one client at a time offering a range of services including a 45-minute Hair Fix head massage and cut, a Smooth and Soothe cut-throat shave or a 20-minute Express Refresh energising facial. Visitors included members of the press and VIPs, Aveda guests, actor Russell Tovey and model Jack Guinness.

Mark Leeson leads inspirational colour and cutting seminar at the Goldwell Academy London Mansfield-based salon owner Mark Leeson hosted an inspirational seminar last month at Goldwell’s new Academy London in Soho. The Evening With event gave attendees an insight into the award-winning hairdresser’s career, business and talents as he transformed a series of models live on stage while being interviewed by compére William Wilson. Enlisting Goldwell’s colour systems, Leeson presented five different looks, which included a fiery copper inspired by Christina Hendricks, a directional icy-blonde and violet undercut as well as a fresh take on a ‘20s bob. The hairdresser, who still regularly works from his Midlands salon seeing clients who travel from as far a field as Europe, said on the night: “It’s our role as colourists to inspire clients and keep them coming back for a professional service. We have to push the industry and trends along to ensure we stay way ahead of the consumer at-home hair colour market.”

Social media update: Facebook embraces hashtags and older users while Instagram introduces video The world of social media is changing and it’s imperative that salon owners keep up, says online expert Valorie Reavis from The Shout Lounge. The demographic of the users on Facebook is changing significantly: in 2010 the average age of its 1.5 billion active users was 38 but it has now crept up to 41. While Reavis believes this isn’t necessarily bad news for salons, she recommends remaining conscious of the age, gender and location of fans to ensure that posts are relevant. Meanwhile, the popular social site also introduced clickable hashtags last month – meaning that salons can create conversations that will be accessible to all the site’s users, not just their own fans. “Facebook has always been about permissible friendships; fans had to like your page before you could talk to them,” she says. “But with the hashtag, salons can join a conversation on any subject trending, such as #celebombre or #hair2heart and their post could be seen by others following the same trend.” Lastly, Instagram introduced bite-sized video last month, which enables users to make 15-second films in addition to posting images. Salon social Over 300 hairdressers and salon owners made their way to Birmingham last month to be the first to hear who’d won the UK La Biosthetique Beauty Stylist Awards 2013. t’s no secret that the nail industry is booming. A recent report published by Nails Magazine revealed that the nail services market grew by $7.47 billion in the US last year alone. And the most popular service is still the humble manicure. The rise has been attributed to many factors from Katy Perry’s penchant for quirky nail art to the trend for sharing manicure snaps on social media. But the biggest catalyst for the explosion of nail services has to be the product innovations that have helped to truly revolutionise the market. Soak-off gel has been around since Bio Sculpture hit the market in the late ‘80s offering its ‘ever lasting manicure’. However, with the recent introduction of gel-polishes that enable techs to apply the product straight from a bottle, the service has become a huge hit with consumers. And today as manufacturers continue to refine their systems with removal methods becoming faster and colour options more infinite, they have taken over traditional

polish to become industry standard. “Nail lacquer has been superseded by UV polish so that customers can keep their nails looking neater for longer,” says Tara Oldham, brand co-ordinator for Alessandro in the UK. “So the need for a salon to have a good UV polish system with a wide variety of colours that does not damage the natural nail is important.” According to Samantha Sweet from UK CND distributor Sweet Squared, one of the biggest reasons for the popularity of gel-polish is the value they offer clients. “When CND Shellac landed on the beauty scene in 2010 one of its primary objectives was to enable the consumer to go back into the salon and get a manicure that would last,” she says. “Women had stopped getting manicures because they were sick and tired of paying £25 for something that only lasted two days (and sometimes not even that long). CND Shellac changed all of that by providing a service that would last for 14 days-plus with no chipping and unbeatable flawless shine.”


MANICURES An all-round service The good news is that whatever type of salon you own, introducing manicures – particularly of the gel-polish variety – can be a great way to boost profits. According to Georgie Smedley at Nail Harmony UK, “there is huge profit potential in the nail industry” whether your salon specialises in the area or not. And with each of her brand’s Gelish gel-polish manicures costing the salon around £1.70 in materials and commanding the average price point of £20 to £25, there’s a minimum of £18.30 to be made per set. That’s 92 per cent gross profit. Likewise, Alessandro’s figures are also sure to appeal to salon owners, with one its luxurious UV polish manicures generating £39.07 profit during just one 60-minute appointment slot. Such is the profit potential of manicures that René Lipsitz, who heads up the Bio Sculpture brand in the UK, says every type of salon should introduce the service as part of their standard menu. “Substantial profit can be made from manicures due to the small amount of space and product required,” she says. “It is also possible to up-sell and up grade the treatment by adding scrubs, massages and even gel treatments.” And not only are they lucrative, but manicures have withstood the pressures of the economic climate too. “Nail services are recession proof,” says Smedley. “In my salon people are spending less on the pamper treatments such as facials and are investing in the things that make them look and feel good the longest – their nails. One treatment will always lead to another too. Why not offer clients a manicure while the colour takes to their hair? It is about maximising every opportunity.” One salon that’s taking full advantage of the popularity of nail services is the Aveda Institute in Covent Garden. Its manicure bookings have seen an 11 per cent increase over the past 12 months thanks to its position as a ‘one-stop hair and beauty destination.’ “It’s a real mix of new and regular guests that has helped drive this growth, but what they all have in common is they are looking for a quality experience,” says manager Mette Haxthausen. “Our guests also love the fact that we’re a one stop location. Many will utilise this by having a manicure while their colour is processing, perhaps during a working lunch meeting or even a friendly catch up with friends.”

The Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa in Chelsea meanwhile offers manicure services to help build client loyalty. Manager Gavin Hoare explains: “If we are ignorant to the needs and preferences of our client base, we may lose their business to someone who is not. While we’re primarily in the business of hair, offering one service means your chances of keeping a client for longer than a year are 50 per cent. But by adding on a second service, statistics tells us that retention increases to 65 per cent. The more services you can offer your clients, the higher the client retention becomes.” And it’s easy for all types of salons to introduce nail services – even if they are short on space. “Manicures do not need a separate room or space – a small nail desk can be set up in a reception area if space is tight,” says Lipsitz. “In hair salons, nail techs can even move around to where the client is having their hair done so that they can have both treatments simultaneously – saving the client’s time and making the most of their visit to the salon.” Likewise, there are ways to keep staff costs down too. Many salons employ freelance or self-employed nail techs while others rent out rooms or tables, which enables them to offer clients the service without taking on another full-time team member. “To keep salary costs low, salons can take on self-employed nail techs and can charge a day rate for the use of the premises or take an agreed percentage of the earnings,” says Smedley. “By having more nail techs you can increase the foot flow and increase profit.” Oldham warns that there are some pitfalls to be aware of though: “It is important to think about how you want the business to run,” she says. “If you rent a table to a tech then they will use their own products. Although this takes the responsibility of stock away from you it also means that you lose control over brands, techniques and treatments. You do however have a guaranteed income from the business in the way of the rent. You can also employ someone on a split basis but if you own the stock then the profit share should be in your favour.” But however you do it, it’s clear that the benefits of introducing nail services are vast. There really has never been a better time to pick up a nail file in the salon.

In a nutshell: Dispose of your empties wisely Did you know that England alone generates around 228 million tonnes of waste every year? The majority of that eye-watering figure ends up in landfills, which causes toxic fumes to spill out into the atmosphere. But despite councils making it easier for everyone to recycle, the UK is lagging behind the rest of Europe with just 39 per cent – compared to Austria’s 63 per cent – of our municipal solid waste making it to dedicated recycling centres. As a business owner, putting a policy into place is imperative. So if you haven’t already, contact your local council to find out what recycling services are on offer and organise your salon’s waste disposable accordingly. Moreover, compost leftover food and hair, and don’t pour chemicals and products down the sink as it can kill wildlife. Instead, enlist a registered waste contractor to dispose of it correctly.

U USE DISPOSABLE EC ECO-TOWELS In a nutshell: Washing bad, recyclable good The introduction of biodegradable, sustainable, recyclable and disposable pure wood fibre towels revolutionised the industry. Running on abundantly available natural gas, this highly efficient unit provides electricity and

isual merchandising is one of the most important tools that retailers use to generate sales for their business, so why not adopt the same tactics for your salon? Up-selling retail products to clients can increase profits without employing another stylist, nail tech or therapist. And using tried and tested visual merchandising methods on the salon floor and in your windows to encourage more sales is imperative for business owners that want to generate more revenue in this testing economic climate. So what exactly is visual merchandising? Simply put, it relates to how retailers display their product both inside and outside their store. Clever visual merchandisers use special techniques to draw customers in from the street, to entertain them and make them feel comfortable, to show them how to use

Used in conjunction with expert recommendation, mastering the art of creating the right environment for your client to buy is the very cornerstone of retailing success. According to freelance visual merchandiser Elpida Magkoura, who has created displays for the likes of Giorgio Armani, visual merchandising should be used to create an environment that makes shopping a pleasurable experience. Moreover, it should also heighten your clients’ buying desire. “The majority of spending is generated by what we want rather than what we need,” she says. “Good visual merchandising does just that: it creates the desire to buy through effective product presentation.” Rachel Parkin, who runs free independent retail advice site Retailrehab. co.uk, agrees adding: “Customers today want to be entertained and demand inspiration and excitement as a part of their overall experience. With judicious use of creativity, design and product, visual merchandising creates an environment that triggers our impulses to buy while implementing effective design ideas should

increase footfall and increase sales.” Using displays to help customers navigate around the salon – even if it is only with their eyes from the hair station, backwash, nail table or on the way to the treatment room – is imperative for boosting sales. In short, good merchandising allows customers to see all your merchandise with greater ease. Parkin says that when devising displays, salon owners should consider combining the three main merchandising techniques – horizontal, vertical and pyramid – alongside ‘live’ displays of products in situ or ‘hero merchandising’ that focuses on one specific product. “For example, displaying shampoo and conditioner on a shelf might show us the colours and size options (horizontal merchandising), but displaying them on a dressing table or room setting shows customers how they might use them in their life (live merchandising). Whereas hero merchandising might involve a large number of product bottles inside a giant champagne glass, for example, making an everyday product suddenly stand out of the ordinary. In a nutshell, visual merchandising sets the stage for the products to shine.” Ensuring that the salon’s first hot spot

(the one right inside the door) always looks fresh and inviting should be the first area to consider when devising inside merchandising plans. “This particular spot is like another window and it’s the display that makes the customer coming in from outside start to slow down and adjust their walking pace, so pull out all the stops for this section,” says Parkin. “Have fun with props, they can enhance your stock and add both interest and value to it, but remember that the stock is the star – it’s easy to get carried away.” The expert maintains that keeping it simple while still creating something visually impressive is the best course of action. “Anything that’s too complicated whether in terms of colour or product will be difficult to keep looking good, so remember that the idea of the display is to sell the product and make it easy for customers to pick it up and actually touch and look at it,” she says. Meanwhile, Sarah Manning, senior course instructor for Visualmerchandisingcourses.co.uk, says having one central walkway will help guide customers through the salon so there’s a clear journey in place to direct them to the reception desk. “Also look at creating zones to help separate types of product or group by collection,” she says. Mixing up display units so there’s a myriad of

eye-catching products on show can help increase interest further. “Use a variety of different equipment to merchandise your stock,” she adds. “For example, use tables together with slat wall equipment, which will help to soften the overall environment.” But one of the most important aspects of visual merchandising is creating a tidy space that doesn’t overwhelm the customer. “Keep product organised and make it easy for customers to find,” says Magkoura. “If you do not have enough space do not try to display everything – it is much more important that the product looks good rather that being able to have on display every single item you have in stock. Overcrowding your shelves does not work. Not replenishing and having empty shelves is just as bad.”

HOW TO CREATE WOW FACTOR WINDOWS Visual merchandising expert Julia Sugden offers her top tips… • Your window should communicate your brand personality. It’s a free billboard to grab people’s attention, generate excitement and entice them inside. It only takes three seconds to make an impression – 80 per cent of that is visual. • Shoppers are attracted to colour as it not only gets their attention but also creates a mood. It’s proven that the eye can only register three colours at once, so bear this in mind when displaying your products. • An effective way of creating seasonal displays is through the colours we associate with those events so think red and pink for Valentine’s Day, and red and gold for Christmas. • If in doubt, display products and props in a triangular formation. It’s proven that the triangular composition is pleasing to the eye. And remember we see things at eye level first. • Create balance and symmetry. Another proven fact is that symmetrical displays are more attractive. • It’s important to remember visual merchandising shouldn’t just finish at the windows. The theme should run throughout the entire inside salon space too.

n any business the practice of sharing is of the utmost importance. But in the salon world, it’s paramount. The industry is a constant evolution, underpinned by its collective creative knowledge, which needs to be shared for the industry to truly flourish. Make sure you are conscious of the people you work with – they are your future so it will pay to make every effort to ensure their journey is as dynamic and fulfilling as possible. We started out with nothing so hope that we have set the benchmark to our staff of what hard work, discipline and dedication can achieve. We began the business without realising we would be creating a long-lasting brand that offers endless opportunities to our staff and this has become a huge motivator for us. At present we have more than 100 people in our team.
