ale grooming has become one of the biggest salon success stories of 2013. It seems that wherever they are in the country, increasing numbers of men are booking in and visiting salons – and not only for traditional haircuts either; they’re becoming progressively open to wet shaves, hair colour, skincare, nail treatments and sunless tanning services too. In line with the rising figures, more and more men-only salons (including Sanrizz’s recent Mr. Rizzo venture in Covent Garden and Hob Man in North London) are also popping up offering specifically tailored services to tap into the burgeoning male grooming market. Father’s Day then seems like an ideal time to attract more men into the salon whether you specialise in the area or not. The savviest unisex salon owners are using their alreadyestablished female clientele to entice in their partners, family and friends through loyalty schemes, direct marketing campaigns and gift vouchers. Find out how you can get in on the act this month in our special feature, Daddy cool, starting on page 44. It may have been a long-time coming, but this month we’ve also been thinking about high summer. And that can only mean one thing: holiday season. While peak summer often means a quiet spell in the salon, masterminding a range of hair and beauty treatments that will get clients ready for their holidays as well as maintaining their look when they return is a great way to ensure a busy few months ahead. That’s why we’ve been hunting down the best summer services for this issue that will inspire your

clients to book in now and keep forever returning. So from the latest in summer hair colour to inch-loss treatments and longlasting manicure and pedicures, turn to page 38 to find out what’s hot for your salon menu now. Speaking of keeping clients coming back for more, this month we’ve also been considering the benefits of introducing a client loyalty scheme. With the rise of social media and online shopping, it’s an area that is most definitely on the rise. And some of the most successful marketing experts – in all sectors including the salon world – are utilising clever strategies to cultivate a staunch following of customers. Sarah Cross of Uber UK, who has multiple years’ experience in this marketing tactic, reveals how to ensure your clients return in her feature Fans for life, starting on page 50. As always we also have an array of business and service ideas throughout this issue to help keep your salon one step ahead of your competitors. Because offering the best service in town alongside a menu of must-have hair and beauty treatments is the only way to succeed. We hope you will find this issue an invaluable tool to plan a long, hot summer. Let the sun shine! GEMMA WARD, EDITOR

St. Tropez supports its partner salons with multi-million pound global marketing campaign starring Kate Moss

S

t. Tropez is gearing up for world domination in the sunless tanning arena following the launch of its first fully integrated 360-degree marketing campaign featuring Kate Moss. The beauty brand kick-started the campaign last month by unveiling new images of the supermodel, shot by Solve Sundsbo – the fashion photographer behind all of its imagery – to the online press. The move provoked an “overwhelming” response from consumers, salon owners and retailers from across the globe with both ‘Kate Moss’ and ‘St. Tropez’ trending almost instantaneously on Twitter. The next phases of the campaign will roll out from the beginning of this month and will include print-based and online

advertising in consumer magazines and websites in the UK, US and Europe. Beauty fans are also being given the chance to win top prizes – including a trip to Saint-Tropez in the South of France – if they tweet about their summer experiences using the hash-tag #OFFTOSTTROPEZ. In addition, the brand’s 3,500 UK salons and stockists will receive a range of POS featuring the new Kate Moss images while beauty professionals will also be given the change to learn how to re-create The Kate Tan. “Salons are the backbone of our brand and we’ve been conscious to ensure that we have all the tools in place to support the professional industry with this amazing campaign,” says Jessica U Finch, St. Tropez’s global executive director. “It’s been a tough year for salons

so we want to support them by putting together all the collateral they need to maximise the success of their business.” As well as being a “genuine” fan of the brand, U Finch says Kate Moss was chosen as St. Tropez’s ambassador because of her global appeal and ability to sell products: “We hope her involvement will create more awareness and enhance our brand position, which can only generate sales. The images used on the POS also give salons an amazing tool to generate interest and encourage customers.” In addition to the new campaign, St. Tropez is gearing up to unveil some new innovations this September in “product genre and application techniques”, which it says will further support its partner salons.

Saks unveils own eyebrow service to rival industry leaders Salon group Saks Hair and Beauty has launched its own eyebrow grooming service that uses a combination of techniques including tinting, waxing tweezing and threading. Company insiders say that Saks Eyes sets itself apart from other eyebrow treatments on the market because its therapists are trained to create a bespoke result tailored to the individual. “Other brow treatments generally provide a very distinctive and defined look,” says Saks beauty expert Kirsty Jewson. “Saks Eyes, meanwhile, is all about achieving a perfectly personalised brow shape, with just the right amount of definition, for each individual client. It’s all about having the expertise to combine the range of techniques differently and our therapists are expertly trained to do just that.” To support the launch Saks has created a how-to video, which is available on its YouTube channel and website. First time clients undergo an introductory half-hour consultation and treatment while the next maintenance appointment slot can be reduced to 15 minutes - depending on the client’s needs.

INDUSTRY UPDATE Anne Veck hosts event to inspire other businesses to ‘go green’ Anne Veck opened her new eco salon’s doors to local businesses in Oxford last month for an event hosted by green technology supplier BlueGen. The salon re-launched at the beginning of the year and is the first in the world to feature BlueGen Ceramic Technology, which slashes energy usage by 50 per cent. Attendees included guests from a range of businesses including Electric Hair, Birmingham University and Goodman International. Veck kicked off the proceedings by revealing her reasons behind the revamp. She then introduced interior designer Charlie Hearn, who explained how he transformed the salon into a greener business while keeping its brand identity. “Inspired by Anne’s quirkiness and love of colour I came up with the design that works well visually while encompassing all of the energy-saving benefits,” he said. “By using LED lighting throughout we were able to achieve high visual impact while saving extensive amounts of energy.” Paddy Thompson from CFCL proceeded to explain the benefits of BlueGen, which include its eligibility in the government’s Feed in Tariff scheme, heat recovery system, filter system that removes OPI sent its nail team to California’s pollution from waste water and its pipe insulation: Coachella last month to offer “BlueGen’s ceramic fuel cell technology can be custom nail designs to VIPs. used by any small business, particularly those with Guests received OPI colour-block large electricity bills,” he said. “Anne Veck’s salon manicures and coordinating is a perfect example of a business that is benefiting bourbon cocktails. from saving energy and reducing its running costs significantly.”

Pure luxury Combining indulgence with a results-driven product line, Jane Scrivner’s facials are a winning salon formula

J

ane Scrivner’s skincare range is focused on creating beautiful, flawless skin – naturally. It has won two Anti-Ageing Beauty Bible Awards for its facial treatment oils and many more across its full range – meaning that it doesn’t have just one champion product: it has a full team. The Jane Scrivner range starts with its

30 | www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk

Nourishing Cleanser – a non-stripping, deep cleaning, cleanser – which yields a result in itself. Combing 100 per cent organic jojoba oil with beeswax and essential oils, it gently melts make-up and purges pores without removing the skin’s own natural defences. Jojoba oil is skin balancing, it will also help replenish collagen and elastin and is easily absorbed deep down into the reparative layers. Just as jojoba oil balances, each product in the rest of the range has its own responsibility. Key formulations include Un Condition Oil for eczema, acne, acne rosacea and psoriasis; Intense Oil for wrinkles, fine lines and scarring; Quartz facial grinds for smooth skin; and Rose Gold for thread veins.

Focusing on using single key ingredients in each product means the brand can target specific skin problems efficiently. It also means that it professional treatments combine the prescriptive with abject luxury. Salon treatments should be about the entire experience. However, if there isn’t a tangible result, then it’s hard for clients to justify a return trip. Using Jane Scrivner’s product warming chamber – The Orb – alongside its range of skincare products means that therapists can offer their clients a unique and luxurious facial or body treatment while addressing their clients’ key skincare concerns. And that really is a true result. Tel: 01789 801 040 Janescrivner.com Spapliance.com

PROFESSIONAL SKINCARE DARPHIN

The results are in... A marriage of visible skincare results and pure indulgence is essential for today’s demanding facial clients

W

ith the jury still out on the safety of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, results-driven facials are becoming increasingly popular riskfree alternatives to Botox and fillers. But unlike their often-painful medically based counterparts, today’s consumers are becoming more demanding when it comes to visiting the salon for a professional skincare service. Because unlike a few years ago when the majority were happy with some pampering and respite, they now expect visible results and the ultimate experience of indulgence. “Customers today want a great experience – but not at the expense of the result,” says Candice Gardner, education curriculum manager for The International Dermal Institute UK, which is responsible for Dermalogica’s research and development as well as its training programmes. “The recession has made the customer assess budgets and has made them more frugal but driven by value for money and quality. Customers are willing to spend on good home care, but need to really justify services such as having a regular skin treatment. “In order to keep using their homecare of choice they will forgo treatments, opt for shorter budget-friendly services or stretch the time between their appointments. If

you cannot offer a skin improvement and result, you will lose the clientele.” Noella Gabriel, director of product and treatment development for Elemis, agrees, adding: “Clients must see an immediate difference after any facial experience, whether it be 15 minutes or an hour. They want to physically see a difference in minimum time at affordable prices. We are in an economy of time and money – the customer is still spending but only on something they trust.” With shorter time scales and smaller wallets in mind, Elemis created its 30-minute Skin Booster Facials as the ideal solution for the modern consumer. Designed to achieve the maximum results in the minimum time, the brand recommends clients return for the quickfix treatment every two weeks – giving salons a regular income and consumers a more manageable commitment to skincare (Elemis.com). French skincare house Guinot also introduced its own 30-minute facial at the end of last year. Hydraclean includes a deep cleanse, use of a patented heated electrode and a relaxing facial massage to leave the skin looking nourished and luminous. And with a price tag of £25 per treatment, it is immediately accessible to the modern woman’s lifestyle and budget (Tel: 0800 590 094 Guinot.co.uk).

Pampering and results But for those willing to invest more time and money into results – clients still expect a pampering aspect too. And responding to demand, new brands have hit the market offering the perfect synergy. “While facials should ultimately be about results, treatments for the skin also need to be combined with quality de-stressing, relaxation and escape from the daily grind,” says Liz Badger, founder of British brand Face the World, which offers a signature facial based on both factors. “Rejuvenation of the skin and soul is the way forward now.” Since its launch in 2011, Face the World’s unique and patented facial is a carefully timed and choreographed experience that uses products, textures, aromas, massage techniques and music representative of different countries from around the globe. “Instead of relying on mechanical gadgetry, it’s the technical competency of the therapists themselves that is key,” says Badger. “The emphasis is on creating a holistic multi-sensory experience. The client is taken on a blissful journey, visiting several different countries within the same treatment, which is memorable, believable and results-driven for the skin and uplifting of the senses. Clients are left feeling energised with radiant skin.”

www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk | 31

PROFESSIONAL SKINCARE Jane Scrivner, who is co-founder of Spapliance – the company behind spa innovation The Orb – as well as the founder her own eponymous line, also believes such facials are a winning combination for today’s clients: “Indulgence is a luxury while tangible differences are a necessity,” she says. “A combination of the two is always going to be a winning formula. If a client takes an hour out of their day then they need to be transported away to deep relaxation and awake with perfect skin.” Her company’s Orb Balance Facial promises to offer exactly that. Merging tradition with technology and science with nature, products – including oils, serums and balms – are heated inside The Orb, which is a potable warming chamber. These are then brushed onto the skin to help promote deep levels of relaxation and product effectiveness. “It brings that partnership of abject luxury and high performance,” says Scrivner. “The treatment delivers on all sensory needs and uses products and appliances to accelerate the effects. Our skincare is award winning and so is our technology, but most importantly our clients leave feeling ‘blissed out’ with beautiful skin.” (Tel: 01789 801 040 Janescrivner.com Spapliance.com).

Non-surgical alternatives Another trend making waves in the results-driven arena is the ‘natural face lift.’ British beauty line Heaven is one brand that makes such a promise. Its Bee Sting Facial – which is reportedly a favourite of Camilla Parker-Bowles and Kate Middleton – claims to ‘delivers the results of Botox without the needles.’ Created by founder Deborah Mitchell, it uses products containing natural ingredients that control the facial muscles for immediate lifting, tightening and firming effects. Products used include Heaven’s Advanced Skin Polish Exfoliator, Divine Cream, Bee Venom Mask and Bee Venom Eyes, which promise to sooth and nourish before revealing a brighter complexion. Japanese cosmeceuticals brand Forlle’d meanwhile is also focused on offering anti-ageing results without surgery or injectables. Its Hyalogy Platinum series boasts a new type of hyaluronic acid with smaller molecules, which are capable of penetrating into deep layers of the skin. This increases the skin’s ability to retain moisture to give a double moisturising

32 | www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk

DERMALOGICA

effect. The range has also been developed to control the photo-ageing process by boosting cellular activity and protecting against free radical damage. Therapists can mix and match its anti-ageing formulas to offer clients customised results-driven facials for instantly visible results (E: A.kamkin@nanocosmetec.com Forlle-d.com). Likewise, skincare pioneer the International Institute for Anti-Ageing is also touting alternatives to surgery as one of the biggest trends in beauty. “Anti-ageing treatments are the most in demand right now and the age at which women are worrying about lines is getting younger,” says training director Tracy Tamaris. “The mature clients who don’t want to go down the surgical route are now demanding more of their facials because they want the equivalent effects to a facelift, without the downsides. They want to walk out of the salon and for people to notice a difference because they look fresher, their skin tone is more even and the texture smoother.” To meet demand, its skincare brand Environ has recently launched the Frown Treatment, a professional facial that uses a trio of penta-peptides to target frown lines. Using its Ionzyme DF machine, the ingredients are driven into the skin to soften lines and reduce muscle tension to help prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming. The company has also carried out its own trials to prove that it can achieve visible results. “People, including celebrities, are turning their backs on toxin injections because they don’t like the unnatural appearance they give the face,” says Tamaris. “The Frown Treatment targets

the same chemical complexes as toxin injections, but without the associated risks. Moreover, it doesn’t completely inhibit natural expressions.”

Medical procedures But for those clients looking for a treatment that’s even closer to a surgical procedure, micro-needle therapy is a popular skin rejuvenation treatment borrowed from the aesthetic industry that offers real results and no downtime. Therapists use a rolling barrel device integrated with micro needles to damage the skin and kick-start collagen production. When it first launched the treatment was the reserve of medical professionals. However, more recently, it was opened up to salons when Boston Medical, a company that specialises in aesthetics, created the first insuranceapproved training for beauty therapists. With a focus on results, it also introduced its SR Serum that can be used before and after micro-needling to boost the treatment’s efficiency. When combined, the service offers reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation as well as a glowing and more even complexion (Tel: 0207 727 110 Boston-medical-group.co.uk). So with the latest innovations in facials available to salons and therapists, it’s possible to offer results that are on a par with Botox and fillers. Because with the long-term safety of injectables in question, offering clients the next best thing is paramount to earning some of the UK’s burgeoning £1billion skincare industry. To succeed, salon owners just need to strike the perfect balance between pure indulgence and tangible results.

Face the future Japanese cosmeceuticals brand Forlle’d has arrived on UK shores offering patented technology and tangible anti-ageing results

E

very salon owner knows that salon business is all about clients. It’s imperative to keep them happy and satisfied so they return. So the question that really has to be answered by every business owner is what do clients want? The answer to this is simple: to see results. And if there is something that can provide positive results in the skincare market, it’s definitely the hi-tech nature of cosmeceuticals.

The science part The skin is a complex organ consisting of several layers, each of them fulfilling a specific function. As the main shield against contamination from the outside environment and climate changes, the skin requires proper maintenance. What you see when you look at your skin is the uppermost layer, the epidermis, which has evolved through the years to be the best protection for the body. This is exactly the reason why it is very difficult to bypass it so it remains the main challenge for skincare developers to deliver active

34 | www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk

components across the skin barrier. A lot of skincare products only operate at the epidermal level, as the molecules of their main ingredients are far too big to penetrate deeper than the epidermis. However, to yield the best results, it is important to cross the epidermis and deliver active ingredients to the lower layer of the skin, the dermis, as this is where wrinkle-causing processes take place. The main cell type of the dermis are called fibroblasts and they produce the structural proteins collagen and elastin as well as hyaluronic acid, which are extremely important giving skin volume and making it look healthy and smooth. With time fibroblasts age and produce less structural proteins, making wrinkles appear. So it’s no wonder that keeping and replacing them is the main concern of many anti-ageing skincare product lines or treatments. While many topical treatments cope quite well with working on the epidermal level, the problem with bypassing it and delivering active ingredients to the dermis

ADVERTORIAL ingredient for skincare results. However, the molecules of the conventional variety are generally too large, which did pose a serious problem for product developers: the acid could not penetrate the skin in any way other than by a popular method of injections. It only covered the skin and could not ensure the desired result to retain moisture. This gives incontestable value then to the debut of a new hyaluronic acid with molecules of unique size – only fivenanometers with high ionization levels. This is a unique patented technology presented by Forlle’d.

Technological breakthrough

still exists. One of the most innovative and effective ways of penetrating through the dermis is presented by Japanese cosmeceuticals Forlle’d.

Wonder ingredient There is one biologically active substance of natural origin that holds a special place among the others – and that is hyaluronic acid. First of all hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold moisture 6,000 times greater than its own weight. One gram can actually hold six litres of

water. Hyaluronic acid is an important component of the matrix of the dermis and plays an important role in cell interactions. The natural regeneration of cells and dermal fibroblasts properties are directly dependent on the concentration of hyaluronic acid, which decreases with age. Hyaluronic acid protects cellular immunity and prevents the appearance of infection. Moreover it prevents the development of allergic reactions and exhibits strong antioxidant activity. Hyaluronic acid is an essential

Based on these scientific achievements and due to a patented manufacturing process, Forlle’d laboratory created a low molecular hyaluronic acid that is capable of penetrating into deep layers of skin. Penetrating through the basal membrane into the dermis, the low molecular ionized hyaluronic acid implements its ability to retain moisture, giving a double moisturising effect from the inside and out. Based on this new technology, Forlle’d presents its anti-ageing skincare line Hyalogy, which consists of cleansers, lotions, creams, masks and serums. Hyalogy by Forlle’d offers a range of benefits such as deep skin hydration that it says is more effective and longer lasting than other skin moisturisers. Meanwhile, Forlle’d skincare products have been designed to be mixed and matched to create customised treatments. Moreover, its highly concentrated formulas are extremely economical and last three times longer than other cosmeceuticals – offering a huge benefit for salon owners. But probably the most important and significant advantages are immediate and visible scientifically proven results, which are something that both salon owner and client are looking for. Forlle’d is now exported to more than 30 countries all over the world and recently landed on our shores as one of the latest cutting edge skincare lines. So if you’d like the opportunity to experience one of the best innovative approaches to anti-ageing available today, don’t miss this hi-tech brand. Forlle’d will be present at Face – the UK’s premier aesthetic conference and exhibition – in London on 21-23 June (Faceconference.com) E: info@ nanocosmetec.com Forlled.com

Laser pointers In light of the recent Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions, Mapperley Park’s Jo Martin explains why salon owners should prepare for the changes expected of a largely unregulated sector

L

ast month saw the publishing of the Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions led by NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh. The report has sent shockwaves through the industry, with many salon owners offering injectables and lasers wondering how it will affect their businesses. The 67-page review considered a wide range of evidence and witness testimony and made some broad-scope recommendations for the future regulation of cosmetic medical industry, which includes surgery, injectables and laser/light treatments.

The purpose of the report is to provide an underpinning for a new legislative framework in both surgical and non-surgical interventions. Key recommendations are that providers should be able to deliver a high standard of expertise and work with an informed and empowered public with access to redress and resolution when things go wrong. Sir Bruce does not say what any new legislation would look like and battle lines are now being drawn between those looking for mandatory regulation and those who would still prefer a selfregulatory approach. Government will

consider its options before responding this summer. However, at the centre of the report is the need for adequate training. Many laser practitioners in the UK have not attained the high standards mentioned in the report – and certainly cannot show that they have done so. All Mapperley Park practitioners are BTEC qualified to deliver laser procedures – and we have delivered training to other laser practitioners to more than 7000 professionals over 10 years. If you want to offer high standard laser and IPL services, we have the experience to help provide evidence of your own expertise and professionalism. Tel: 01159 690 111

SUMMER MENU MINT VELVET

hot summer services

The season’s hottest hair and beauty services to add to your menu now THE HAIR SMOOTHER Keratin-based hair smoothing treatments have come a long way since they first hit the market. And touting the service as the ultimate pre-holiday hair treatment will keep clients’ hair looking its best until autumn. The latest formula innovations mean it’s even easy to offer clients frizzfree hair that’s protected from humidity the harsh summer elements. Brazilian Blowout’s Original Pro service helps improve the hair’s condition by enveloping each strand in a protective protein layer. This eliminates frizz as it smoothes, offering results that last up to 12 weeks when used with the brand’s Acai After Care maintenance products (Tel: 0845 862 5110 Ganeshagroup.co.uk).

38 | www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk

THE INCH-LOSS TREATMENT Most clients want to shed a few pounds before donning their bikinis. In addition to weight-loss programmes, salons can aid their clients’ efforts by offering a holisticbased inch-loss body treatment. Oxyjet’s Body Slim uses pure oxygen alongside red and blue light technology to effectively target excess fat and cellulite. Topical ointment is applied and the problem areas are blasted with oxygen via a small wand applicator, helping the product penetrate deeper into the skin while ridding the body from toxins. Afterwards a light therapy treatment activates the metabolism process to break down fat cells while cooling and tightening the skin (Tel: 01775 722 243 Oxyjetuk.co.uk).

THE PERFECT TAN As more clients worry about the damaging effects of overexposure to UV and UVB rays, sunless tanning is becoming an increasingly popular service for preholiday bookings. But rather than risking looking unnatural, the trend for bespoke tanning services is on the rise. That’s why Australian brand Vani-T has created its Cocktail Tanning Menu offering varying blends of its customisable solutions. Therapists can discuss the options available to the client and then use the menu to mix the correct amount for the desired result. Its solutions contain natural ingredients and adjust to the client’s own skin tone to reveal a completely distinctive result (Tel: 0208 280 1026).

SUMMER MENU THE TWO-WEEK MANI-PEDI An essential pre-holiday service, the latest professional nail colours offer long-lasting results that won’t chip, smudge or peel for a fortnight. The Bio Sculpture ‘everlasting manicure’ was the first of its kind on the market. Today the company offers over 150 core colours alongside trend-led shades each season. Applied like gel using a brush and then cured under a UV or LED lamp, it lasts up to three weeks on fingers and six on toes (Tel: 0845 331 2347 Biosculpture.co.uk). Alternatively, Nail Harmony’s Gelish comes in a polish bottle and is cured under a UV lamp for flawless results that will last all holiday (Tel: 0800 014 8300 Nailharmony.co.uk).

THE HOLIDAYPROOF LASHES Ideal for clients that don’t want to worry about their lashes on holiday, eyelash extensions and semi-permanent mascara offer a more high impact alternative to a traditional tint. Flirties’ Xaggerate professional mascara promises to offer striking results that will last up to three weeks. The product is applied by a salon professional and can be worn over natural lashes or extensions for a smudge-free finish. The company offers therapists a complete range of products as well as training courses to help them make the most out of the service (Tel: 0845 022 2233 Beautytrix.me).

THE CELLULITE BUSTER Services that can help reduce cellulite are always a popular choice for clients in the summer months. And while aesthetic treatments often require a vast investment to set up, it’s still possible to offer results without paying for expensive equipment. Elemis’ Body Sculpting Cellulite and Colon Therapy is a holistic service that harnesses the power of massage. Helping to detox the body, aid digestion and stimulate the colon, the body is brushed and then massaged before the application of Elemis’ Fennel and Birch peel-off body mask. The therapist then applies Body Sculpting Firming Cream using a sweeping massage technique to encourage lymphatic decongestion (Tel: 01278 727 830).

MINT VELVET

THE NEW COLOUR Blonde clients love to lighten their hair for the warmer months so offering a new and exciting colour service is a great way to capitalise on demand. London’s Charles Worthington salon has masterminded the exclusive London Lights service, which combines a pre-balayage primer cut as well as the bespoke application of hand-painted colour. A natural update on the ombre hair trend, it creates a multifaceted, expensive-looking result with a darker shade at the root area and an array of shades and tones at the lightened ends. The cut also maximises the look (RRP £185; Charlesworthington.com).

THE POWER BROWS Perfectly groomed brows have become one of the biggest beauty trends of the year. And the demand for ‘power brows’ is distinctly on the rise. However, with many clients visiting salons with overplucked brows, it hasn’t always been possible to create a fuller look. Luckily eyebrow specialist ILAH has created the 45-minute Red Carpet Brow Treatment, which includes tinting the hair and skin. The service is great for clients with sparse eyebrows and it also removes the need to use pencil to fill in any gaps – making it ideal for holidays. A professional kit costs £99 + VAT while in-salon training for up to eight therapists is £250 + VAT. The price of each service, which commands £25 to £45, works out at £0.08 (Tel: 0844 096 1877 Ilahdistribution.co.uk).

HAIR REMOVAL

Waxing is a beauty salon summer staple and advancements in formulations and technology has meant the service is more efficient than ever. MEN’S HAIRDRESSING

Daddy cool Use this month’s Father’s Day as the perfect opportunity to tap into a new wave of image-conscious male clients

M

Nottingham. “The classic short back and sides is here to stay – especially with further influences coming through from

COURTESY OF H&M

ale grooming has become the salon industry’s biggest success story of 2013. A recent report commissioned by Salon Services has revealed that there’s been an average 53 per cent increase in male custom over the past 12 months. And men aren’t just booking in for haircuts either: in addition to asking for their monthly ‘short, back and sides’ male clients are putting their hands in their pockets to pay for wet shaves and beard trims as well as massage, hair colour and manicures too. So with Father’s Day just around the corner and the first ever National Men’s Grooming Day kicking off on 10 June, there’s never been a better time to reassess your treatment menu and up the ante on male grooming services to cater for this rapidly expanding market.

A close shave

The final cut Haircuts for men will always be popular. However, thanks to fashion trends and well-groomed celebrity icons like David Beckham, experts say that opting for more credible salons over drop-in barbershops is becoming more of a priority for male clients. “Men are demanding the sharp and neat crops as seen on Mad Men and Broadwalk Empire and it takes skilled precision cutting to pull it off,” says Angelo Vallillo, art director for unisex salon Zullo and Holland in

44 | www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk

recently installed a VIP suite to cater for the city’s sports players. However, despite its popularity, it will still use Father’s Day to attract even more clients and has already sent out an email campaign to its entire database shrewdly using fashion trends to hook in more bookings. “We’ve sent out two email campaigns playing on the Great Gatsby theme,” he says. “One has gone out to our male clients offering the polished look of Jay Gatsby while the other went to our female customers offering to restyle the man in their life.”

The Great Gatsby, where the hair is longer and top but heavily groomed to perfection and with obvious product use.” Former professional footballer Vallillo has garnered a large male fan base since he joined his uncle’s salon six years ago – so much so that the business has

But haircuts aren’t the only service enticing a male clientele. Hot towel wet shaves, the traditional haircut and shave service as well as head shaves and waxing are becoming increasingly popular among men. And even better still, they can be offered easily as add-on services at the cutting station. “The beard and moustache trend has really taken off all over the UK,” says Simon Shaw, European artistic director for Wahl UK. “So the best salon owners have been reacting by offering new specialist shaving menus with services such as a full wet shave, hot towels and beard lining.” One company that’s been at the

MEN’S HAIRDRESSING forefront of the trend is The Shave Doctor. According to CEO Mark Sproston, its hot towel wet shave has seen a 40 per cent rise in popularity since its launch in 2010. “More and more barbershops and salons are now introducing this service to their menus,” he says. “Some of this has been through demand of the salon’s clients as their male customers are demanding more services than just a standard haircut.” The brand trains salon professionals how to offer its unique 10-step wet shave, which combines hair removal with a men’s facial (Tel: 01889 882 783 Shavedoctor. co.uk). Meanwhile, it also offers a full retail line for salons that want to maximise sales on the back of bookings.

Spreading the news Even if you don’t already have a strong male client base, Father’s Day can be used as a great hook to expand your target market. Salon owners should take advantage of their female clients this month, as they will undoubtedly be looking for gift ideas for their fathers and husbands too. “All salons that cater for male clients should really take advantage of this time of year,” says Sproston. “This is especially true for unisex salons as female clients will be purchasing gift vouchers or gift sets for the male members of their family. Strong marketing in salon windows and on workstations is fundamental in getting the interest.” Shaw agrees, adding: “Remember to talk about your Father’s Day promotions to your female clients too as they’re the ones that will be spending. Make sure they know that you have products and vouchers available that would make great gifts.” And if you do already attract lots of men, Father’s Day can be a great way to pull in extra numbers. Adam Carvin from men-only salon Hob Man in North London suggests running a ‘recommend a father’ incentive: “If you are stuck for ideas look at successful promotions that you already run and adapt these for the occasion,” he says. “For example, we’ll be encouraging clients to bring their dads along to the salon to receive £5 off their total bill.” Packages can be a great way to encourage a push in services and retail combined. Carvin suggests offering a percentage discount on products with every cut and hot towel shave service. “This doesn’t limit your options on retail and plants the seed that for a little bit extra,” he says. “The client is getting

a great deal, even if the product is for themselves rather than a gift.” Offering packages as Father’s Day gift ideas to your existing clientele is also a great way to drum up new business. New men-only salon Mr. Rizzo, which recently opened its doors in London’s upmarket Covent Garden area offering services including haircuts, colours and wet shaves, has put together a range of gift ideas especially for the occasion. Its first two Father’s Day packages include professional services while the second is a goodie bag containing grooming products. The salon is promoting the offer through menu cards in Sanrizz salons (its parent company) alongside window stickers. “We’ll also be offering these as gifts ideas on Timeout.com where e-vouchers can be purchased as gifts,” says manager Hari Efthymiades. “Other sites such as Lastminute.com are also great platforms to promote male pampering around Father’s Day.”

Going viral So how can you spread the word even further still about your Father’s Day promotions? Vallillo suggests using the power of social media: “About 30 per cent of our Facebook likes are men, and we try to keep that in mind when designing posts,” he says. “It can be tempting to focus on things that interest our female clients. But, as with any offer, you should be pushing across all your communication channels. One easy and topical campaign would be to post pictures of male celebrities to show how their styles have changed over the years, or photos of particular looks with advice on how to achieve them. Link it to your Father’s Day promotions and you’re laughing.” Likewise, Efthymiades also believes that social media is the way forward if you want to appeal to a male audience. “We use Facebook to post lots of men’s fashion and grooming news and our continual updates give people a reason to come back daily,” he says. “We also use Twitter so we can join in conversations with potential clients as well as Instagram to showcase our work.” So whatever your plans are for June, make targeting more men number one on your agenda. The male grooming boom that experts have been promising for the past decade is finally here – and it’s time to capitalise on a new image-conscious society.

BUSINESS Client loyalty, making daily deal sites work and maximising your retail division

Forever friends A

ttracting new customers is a must for all salons. However, retaining loyal fans year after year is every business owner’s Holy Grail. That’s why this month we’ve enlisted the expertise of customer loyalty expert Sarah Cross to find out how salons can make their services truly irresistible. Because when a client walks through your doors for the first time, it should be just the beginning…

Fans for life Customer loyalty expert Sarah Cross reveals how salon owners can adapt some of the tricks used by major retailers to retain a strong base of brand devotees

Y

TONI & GUY

our store’s customer base is without a doubt its most precious business asset. And looking after your regular spenders will help breed staunch supporters while creating your very own brand devotees. As the MD of Uber UK, a company that specialises in the business of retaining customer loyalty, I could write an entire book on facts and figures on this subject. But as time is of the essence for us all, my message is simple: 93 per cent of your clients (or potential ones) are more likely to increase their spending if you have a fantastic loyalty programme in place.

Staying loyal Loyalty programmes have been around for many years and they are increasingly used by businesses to encourage customers to stick with their brand. On the high street the Boots Advantage card is a prime example as is Sainsbury’s Nectar scheme. But as retaining custom in today’s rocky economy becomes even more important, SMEs including salons are also adapting similar techniques to devise their own loyalty programmes. So what makes a loyalty programme truly fantastic? There are four key ingredients that, if used correctly, will conjure one great recipe for success. These include exclusivity (all clients want to feel special), surprise (because everyone loves a surprise), immediate value (reward them straight away and they’ll be back in no time for more), and personalisation (this makes your customers feel even more special). In today’s climate, spending money on hair and beauty is often seen as a

50 | www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk

treat. So to persuade clients to use your services, they need to feel truly pampered everytime. Stamp cards and points-based systems will just make them feel like everyone else. However, personalised and added value extras will enhance their entire shopping experience. Salons need to work at creating a VIP community of loyal clients by offering them little extras to simply show them how much they are valued. A complimentary glass of bubbly or one-to-one shopping experience will promote a feel good factor that will not only make clients want to come back, but also spread the word among their friends too.

Identify your customer In today’s difficult climate, every business needs to ensure they’re winning the hearts, minds and wallets of their customers. But with so much choice, how do you make sure they choose you over competitors?

Firstly, you need to understand your client. Don’t assume you know – do your research. What do they like? Where do they go out? Speak to your staff, hold focus groups and conduct surveys and questionnaires. You need to truly get to know the people that visit your salon and find out what turns them on as well as off. Well-executed research will enable you to fully understand your clientele so you can speak to them personally and relevantly. This will ensure that you’re giving them exactly what they want and will keep them engaging with you more often. Put data collection and usage at the core of your customer relationship management programme. You need each client’s name, address, email and date of birth (for those birthday treats) – the more you can find out the better. You can then overlay this information with your transactional data to communicate effectively, timely and relevantly.

BUSINESS TONI & GUY

TOP LOYALTY TIPS

Be aware, however, that clients are increasingly sceptical about passing on their details, so there has to be a compelling reason for them to share it with you. Make your proposition stand out from the crowd. Highlight the benefits and run an initial competition to get your staff involved; it’s all about building trust. With loyalty, one size doesn’t fit all so don’t offer every client the same thing. Be relevant and offer different customer segments different exclusives and benefits based on their transactions and lifestyles.

Dare to be different When communicating with your clients don’t be afraid to challenge the norm and stand out from the crowd. You could work with other non-competitor brands that they already love and get them excited by offering something relevant as an exclusive benefit of being your client. That will help make them feel exclusive and part of a VIP community – even when they’re not spending with you. Recent research conducted by Uber UK found that a point-based programme excites just 11 per cent of customers. They don’t work for most brands and are often perceived as dull and impersonal – so be brave and get personal. A non-point based loyalty programme is a much more effective way to engage your audience; get it right and you’ll reap the rewards.

An adaptive approach is also an absolute must. Measure the success of every campaign so you can see what works and what doesn’t. The first year of running a programme should be the test and learning phase; many big brands have a failure budget that allows them to experiment and learn more about what motivates their audience. Use your first year to find out what activity you need to do to generate the revenue you need. But one thing I can’t stress enough is that your loyalty activity will live or die with the enthusiasm of your staff. If they don’t believe in it then your customers won’t either. You have to invest time into getting them excited and buying into the programme for its long-term success. If they feel part of it they’ll communicate it more effectively. And don’t expect miracles straight away. Loyalty is not a quick sales fix, but with a strategic and adaptive approach you will create a community of like-minded brand advocates that will visit you more often – and spend more when they do. Sarah Cross has over 16 years’ experience in loyalty and customer retention management. She is the MD for Uber UK, a boutique consultancy that helps brands drive revenue through strategic programmes. Follow @uber_ SarahCross and @uberUK on Twitter for industry tips or visit Uber-uk.com.

• If clients are giving you their data, you need to use it: it’s all about building trust. And once you start communicating, you need to keep doing so regularly to create a community of brand advocates. • Your clients will be happy to hear from you if there’s something of value in your message. This means you need to be capturing the right data so that you can get in touch in a way that’s totally personal to offer them super-relevant treats, rewards and benefits. • You need to create a loyal community around your brand that clients want to be a part of. Forget traditional points-based programmes: your customers will feel much more excited if you get in touch to indulge them with gifts and surprises when they least expect it. • Speak to customers how they like to be spoken to. Email is the cheapest way of getting in touch but some consumers will be more responsive to text messaging – make sure you use your data to evaluate this and act on it. Also, don’t forget social media. • Use your data to get new clients. Encourage your existing fans to shout about you by encouraging them to refer a friend to the loyalty programme. Treat them and their friend to a special gift voucher – but give it an expiry date so that they visit straight away.

BUSINESS TIPS

Deal or no deal? Despite negative feedback from some salon owners, Lorena Oberg from salon group DermaEraze reveals how she’s made Groupon work for her business

W

hen people have less cash to splash, beauty treatments and pampering can take a back seat. But when you’ve got a business to run, you need to encourage both existing and new customers to return. Personally, I love a good bargain and assumed other beauty-lovers would be the same. My instincts were right and I’ve since run 12 very successful features with Groupon, selling over 800 vouchers in total. On average we’ve up-sold to 70 per cent of our discount customers and they keep coming back for more. If it can work for my chain of nationwide salons, then there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work for you. But before taking the leap, there are some things that every business owner should keep in mind…

understand your salon that they can make the deal a success.

Make sure you understand the deal and crunch the numbers Your partner company should talk you through how your deal will work, when it will be online, how long it will run for, the limits on how many deals you can sell and how to ensure you fulfil them. If any of this isn’t clear, make sure you ask them before committing to anything to ensure there’s no confusion. Be realistic about what you can manage. It’s better to start small and ensure the deal is a success than to over

Develop a positive partnership There are loads of daily deals sites out there making similar promises to help your business but what distinguishes one from another? From experience, I’d say some are willing to work with you to develop a positive partnership, while others aren’t. My first dabble into daily deals was disappointing. The company clearly wasn’t interested in helping to make the venture a success. Then I spoke to Groupon whose team impressed me from the get-go. I knew I could trust them because they saw our relationship as a partnership.

Be honest about your business The key to any successful partnership is honesty. As a salon manager or owner the onus is on you to explain to your chosen provider why you’re considering using their site, exactly what it is you want to achieve, any particular issues your business is facing and your goals for the next financial year. It’s only by ensuring they fully

profitable and that the deal works for you.

Ask about additional support Some deal sites offer businesses additional support so make sure you ask what else is on offer. I’ve been able to save time and money by using Groupon’s Scheduler tool. This is a free online booking system that lets my salon managers accept and schedule discount deal bookings directly and manage redemptions effectively. Without it I’d have to hire someone to manage this process, which would cost about £15-20k a year. I can log in to the app on my iPhone to see how things are going at just a glance. There are also apps for voucher redemption – Groupon really does try to make it as easy as possible for small businesses.

Customer service is everything

promise and under-deliver. To really make money from the deals, it’s important that you do all you can to up-sell to encourage repeat custom. Try and think of a unique deal that others can’t replicate. It’s better to start with smaller offers and to have the opportunity once the customers are in the door to talk about additional or follow-up treatments when they’ve seen that they work. I run deals on services that have a very high success rate because of this. It is also important to keep potential problems to a minimum, so that client satisfaction is as high as it can be. Above all, you should never run a deal at a loss for the sake of new people coming through the door. It’s all about being extra careful in the planning stages to make sure your business will remain

Last but not least, treat your discount deal customers in the same way you would treat a full paying customer. At DermaEraze this is a company policy and I’m glad to say that I have never had a complaint about poor service. A discounted treatment will get new clients in the door, but fantastic customer service will keep them coming back again and again. It’s also essential that if you’re using a service like Groupon, you should also make sure that customers can get a booking within two to three weeks of their desired date. Since working with Groupon, the partnership has been so successful that we have grown from one to three clinics. We are also looking to franchise the DermaEraze model in 2014. Lorena Oberg is CEO for DermaEraze, which has salons in Surrey, London and Birmingham. For more information about partnering with Groupon visit Grouponworks.co.uk

MANAGER PRO

Message on a bottle Steve Rowbottom reveals how to make retail a stronger part of your overall salon business

“R

etailing is an integral part of every salon business as it helps build long-standing loyalty between your staff and clientele. Working effectively in an advisory capacity shows clients that your concern for their hair goes beyond the time they are in the chair. Offering professional, prescriptive hair care and aftercare advice and solutions extends to a client’s real life away from the salon and is the area they can benefit from a truly tailored approach. “Retailing is a huge part of the Westrow business both in our seven salons and online, where our e-commerce site Besthairbrands.com offers a vast selection of premium products. We launched this in 2008 to respond to the growing needs of clients who prefer to purchase online. While this has proved to be extremely popular, nothing can truly replace the personal, experiential shopping experience we offer in the salon. “Communication is key in any business but in a client facing industry like ours, it is paramount to ensuring impeccable client relations. At Westrow we constantly reinforce the message that stylists need to fully engage with clients on the products they are using throughout their service. They need to really listen to their clients and let them talk, only offering tailored product suggestions that fully respond to their needs once they are carrying out the salon service. Hair care and styling advice is also encouraged to make each client aware of other salon services and promotions that may be available. “We run monetary retail incentives

every month – sometimes weekly – for our staff across the business as a whole. This works alongside commission and any individual salon incentives that are running, which can prove very lucrative. As a result we have discovered very retaildriven members of staff who consistently reach the top five every month. There is nothing like an incentive to drive your staff to succeed. facts and figures and keep everything out in the open: tailor-made turnover sheets and individual progress reports are placed within each staff room every Monday morning, while every month we detail the top 10 retailers across the company as a whole. “We always recognise and reward our staff for their achievements and have a Retailer of the Year category at our annual awards. In the past we have sent people on holidays and industry trips overseas as prizes. We run collective monthly figures, which is retail percentage against

professional turnover. Everyone knows where they stand, what’s achievable and what the benefits are. As well as group retail incentives, each salon has its own business plan with a retail target as part of that plan. Within each salon individuals have their own targets and incentives, so that every step of the way staff are incentivised to strive harder and reach their potential. “Our retail experts within each salon attend sixweekly courses to develop a clear picture of the mechanics of marketing, merchandising, point-ofsale material, incentives and stock control. Each one has extensive product knowledge that ensures they can respond to every client’s hair care need; and when new products hit the market, their clients are the first to know. Ensure a return on your retail investment by encouraging your retail experts to cascade their knowledge in staff meetings, educating new techniques as well as the hot stock that’s set to launch. This will ensure your team is always one-step ahead. “For Westrow, working in synergy with our preferred product partners means that we can always be assured of the best in product innovation, which means we in turn can offer our clients products that are not only tried and tested, but tried and trusted. Our staff members really are a product of their environment. When they succeed, we succeed – we’re all in this together.” Steve Rowbottom has more than 30 years’ experience in the hairdressing industry and is co-director of the Westrow hairdressing group, which operates seven salons across Yorkshire.

EDUCATION

Winning ways Tina Rook reveals how Saks Education rewards its apprentices through inspirational competitions

“T

he hairdressing industry is renowned for being competitive. Therefore a fantastic way to raise your salon or individual team member’s profile is to gain recognition for entering competitions and winning awards. “Recently the Saks Education Apprentice Awards were held with regional heats taking place at key locations across the country. The competition was divided into three categories: Level Two Hairdressing Apprentices, Level Three Hairdressing Advanced Apprentices and Level Two Barbering Apprentices. Judges were from Saks Education training coordinating team and they awarded marks during each heat based on technique, health and safety and the overall final look.

56 | www.thesalonmagazine.co.uk

The results were announced by post and every entrant received written feedback based on their performance. “All Saks Education apprentices receive recognition for the effort involved in entering. Each entrant receives a certificate of achievement for their participation and publicity of photographs of themselves and their models displayed on Saks Education’s website and social media page. A special competition edition magazine is also produced containing photos and details of each entrant, which is sent to each of the 200+ salons that Saks Education currently visits to deliver in-salon training provision. The winner of each category also receives a Saksessories hairdressing kit, worth over £300. However, while winning can be

a fantastic achievement, the benefits of entering – whether the learner triumphs or not – makes it extremely worthwhile. The experience can not only be character building, but can also help shape the career path of an apprentice, with previous Saks Education competition entrants going on to compete and be successful at industry-wide events such as the L’Oreal Colour Trophy. Running smoothly K Fusion by L’Kerabelle offers clients an easy route to the hair they’ve always wanted

F

ollowing years of extensive research, Lorraine Rose from D&L Hair launched K Fusion by L’Kerabelle in 2011, a revolutionary anti-frizz smoothing treatment. With a safe, effective and unique formula that meets all EU directives coupled with an easy application method, the system has hit the professional hair industry by storm. Lorraine joined forces with iconic hairdresser Robert Shipton – who is now a company director – to work on its development. The pair, who had extensive knowledge of keratin treatments, worked with a team of chemists to develop and launch the new system. K Fusion is packed with proteins and hydrolysed keratin, contains UV protection and is infused with argan oil. It works by

softening and bending the disulphide bonds in the hair, repelling moisture and sealing in the cuticles to help prevent frizz and leave the hair smooth, soft and manageable. Moreover, unlike permanent straighteners that break and re-set the bonds in the hair, leaving the hair full of volume instead of looking poker-straight. The product is 100 per cent formaldehyde free, even when heated, making it perfectly safe for all hair types. The results can last up to four months and can be reapplied as often as required. K Fusion recommends using products from the L’Kerabelle aftercare range to enhance the effects of the treatment. Key products include shampoo and conditioners for regular, fine and coarse hair as well as a Deep Conditioning Mask, Styling Gel and Anti Frizz Serum. Tel: 0208 207 2591 Dnlhair.co.uk

THE FELLOWSHIP

The members’ club New Fellowship for British Hairdressing president Errol Douglas reveals why the association is vital for ambitious salon owners

“I

n last month’s column I mentioned one of the Fellowship’s most premier events: President’s Night. This took place at the end of April at London’s Dorchester Hotel and was an amazing evening (many thanks to past president Mark Creed for making my inauguration so memorable!). “Since then I’ve been working in my new role as president and the hardest part of the job is broadcasting how incredible the Fellowship is and how important it is for ambitious salon owners to join. The member’s list really is like a ‘who’s who’ of hairdressing and the host of activities that are held regularly are absolutely incredible. “In order to maintain its leading position the members of the Fellowship Council and Events Committee meet on a monthly

Have fun with hair extensions

basis to ensure that they continuously forge new boundaries. “Additionally, to support our members, we also publish FM (Fellowship Magazine). This glossy publication ensures members are regularly kept well informed, educated and inspired about everything we do with on the spot reporting of Fellowship events, sponsor’s activities, individual hairdresser profiles and future plans “It’s also vital that The Fellowship has a voice and gets recognition in both hair trade and consumer media. Luckily we have the generous support of the industry’s brilliantly connected PR agencies which cover our activities, bring our efforts to life in the media and help raise our profile along the way. “Finally, you can never overestimate the power of the internet. And when it comes

to being part of the techno world, we’re on it. Visit Fellowshiphair.com anytime to check out up-and-coming events and what’s been happening in Fellowship circles. We hope to see you soon.” Errol Douglas MBE
