Sustainable dog brand, Tangle, is on a mission to put an end to ghost nets, and lost or abandoned fishing nets, from entering our oceans and killing marine life through a range of premium sustainable dog accessories made from recycled fishing nets in the UK.

Named the silent killer of our seas, nearly half of the plastic in the ocean comes from ghost fishing nets that have been discarded in the sea. These nets are often made from harsh plastics that take centuries to degrade and are killing millions of marine species every year.

Sam Cartwright and Xavier Warburton, co-founders of Tangle, started the business in 2022 to counteract the ghost net problem in an innovative way, working to repurpose old fishing nets into long-lasting, premium dog products for environment-conscious dog owners.

Xavier says: “We’re all aware of the impact of plastic bottles and straws, but in reality, ghost nets make up nearly half of all plastics in our oceans and they’re far more deadly to marine life. Lost or discarded nets continue to ‘ghost’ around the ocean entangling and killing marine life so unnecessarily.

“By creating our beautifully made dog products from recycled nets, Tangle stops the ghost net problem and in turn allows animal lovers to help save marine life. We’re on track to stop over 500 tennis courts worth (137,800 sqm) of fishing nets becoming ghost nets this year.”

Sam adds: “By introducing an incentive for fishermen to exchange their old nets through our partnership ports, we’re able to reduce the likelihood of the nets being dumped overboard out at sea and provide people with a unique product. We want to rid our oceans of these deadly nets for good.”
