INDUSTRY UPDATE
Beards, Assemble!
T
he World Beard and Moustache Championships was held in Antwerp, Belgium in May this year, but you don’t have to travel far to see some top-notch face fuzz! August 10 will see the return of South West Beard Club’s very own competition, at the Lucky 7 Club in Paignton, Devon. The event will feature some of the finest facial hair from around the UK and further afield, from twirled moustaches, to neatly trimmed beards, to the crazy freestyle competitors, where anything goes! There are even handmade categories, so those who aren’t blessed with great facial hair can join in the fun and have a great time too! But don’t worry if your beard isn’t huge, or you’re not a fan of fancy styling and prefer the simple look. Competitors will line up across ten different categories that cover every conceivable style of face fuzz; moustaches, partial beards, and full beards, both styled and natural, plus handmade categories for ladies and children. Proceeds from this year’s event will go to the Lions Barber Collective, a charity founded by star barber, Tom Chapman. Suicide is the number one killer of young men in the UK, and the charity seeks to raise awareness of the issue, and help barbers get involved in
8 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
their BarberTalk scheme. “As Barbers we have a unique relationship, and often a friendship with our clients,” said Tom Chapman. “This creates a lot of trust between the barber and the person in the chair, allowing many people to open up and discuss subjects they wouldn’t talk to friends or family about. We don’t want barbers to become councillors, but we would love to use that trust to make a difference, and to help direct people to
the help that they need.” If you’re the proud owner of an award-winning beard, if you know someone that is, or even if you’re just looking for a day out that’s different from the norm, then book your tickets for the South West Beard and Moustache Competition, and help us to raise money for the Lions Barber Collective!

Online booking improves barbers
W
hilst in the Barber industry walkin appointments predominantly remain, there’s a lot of technology that businesses can be using to further improve their booking rate. So, this being said, Salon Tracker software are discussing the benefits of online booking and how this can advance footfall within your business. By offering a solely walk-in service, you’re only attracting opportunity clients who are passing your business, or who know of your barbers and have therefore travelled there specifically to get their hair cut. On occasions such as these, if and when the client comes in to your salon, say they can’t get an appointment at that particular time, they may then perhaps look elsewhere if they haven’t got long to wait. So, how can online booking help, what are the benefits? If a client walks-in and can’t get an appointment with you right at that moment, with online booking, they can
12 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
register for your app and see when your appointment gaps are later that day. Not to mention, by offering an app, you are then capturing client’s details in the process, to be able to further market to these customers at a later date. Once you then offer an online service continuously at your barbers, this also helps to improve your client retention. As if you have a regular customer and you offer online booking, next time this client needs an appointment, they are able to make a direct booking with you at their preferred time and often with their chosen barber too. So, for any new clients, if you offer this service from the beginning this then helps to hold their custom too. You also start to further attract customers who may want to book in with you via the app at convenient times, for example over lunch breaks if they work close to your premises, or even after work on their way home. If you only offer a walk-in service, a client may be less likely to chance visiting your barbers over their lunch
hour, as they take the risk of you being too busy and then they may have had a wasted journey if they are pushed for time. However, if you have a booking app that clients can use, they then have the confirmation that their booking is made at their chosen time – meaning that they can just nip out over their lunch hour, or other chosen time! By offering an online booking package, as a business you also have much more control over your appointments and you can start to further identify sales information, including peak booking times. Not to mention, your barber booking system is then accessible 24/7 and being productive even when business doors are closed. You may fill an appointment gap that you may not necessarily have done if you didn’t get a walk in at that same time. BARBERSHOP OF THE MONTH
The Roots of Roots The Roots Foundation based in Exeter is owned by PJ Shepherd and Luke Burgon, who believe sustainability goes “hand in hand with quality.”
W
ith barbershops enjoying a boom in Britain, many are setting themselves up as more than just a place to get a haircut. They’re social centres: places to talk, have a coffee or a beer, and even engage with art and music. One of the best examples of this ‘more than just a shop’ ethos is The Roots Foundation. Based in Exeter, Roots – as staff and patrons affectionately call it – is already making a name for itself. Building its brand around inclusivity, one of the most notable things about Roots is its wholehearted commitment to sustainability. It runs on 100% renewable electricity, much of the furniture is homemade from salvaged materials, and everything is completely vegan, from the materials of the chairs to the products

received the best service possible when entering the shop. We had a chat with owners and cofounders, PJ Shepherd and Luke Burgon to learn more. PJ came into the barbering industry relatively late, but he’s been a vegan for a long time. He remembers turning vegetarian at age 17, but unlike many he can’t put his finger on any ‘eureka!’ moment. ‘There was no one ‘thing’ that convinced me’, he says. ‘It was just a feeling’. He spent a lot of time in local punk rock scenes, putting a sustainable DIY ethos to work, and then entered the industry, where he met Luke. Luke had a lot more experience cutting hair. He worked in a salon for well over a decade before switching to barbering six years ago. In between, he had the chance to do a lot of travelling. He was spending a few months in India, living in an Ashram, when he first started thinking properly about vegetarianism. Describing himself as always ‘inquisitive’, Luke recounts
BARBERSHOP OF THE MONTH investigating deeper and deeper into the ethics of what he was eating. “The more I read’” he remembers, ”the more it became apparent that I couldn’t eat meat. I just couldn’t register an animal as something I would eat.” With his eyes opened, Luke moved back to the UK and started barbering, working for an old mate. He soon crossed paths with PJ and the two became fast friends. As they spent more time together and discovered all they had in common, they began to think seriously about opening a business. They’d had good experiences at every shop they’d worked in, but still something didn’t feel quite right. “We felt”, recalls PJ, that there was nowhere “we would feel excited to work at or to be a part of” Or, he adds, “where we’d fit in”. While it may seem unique and even strange to some, PJ and Luke laugh at the idea that they ever sat down and consciously planned to open ‘the vegan barbershop. Instead, in PJ’s words, the whole thing was “pretty darn natural”. Both men were so committed to living sustainably that they barely had to consider how Roots would operate: “that was really the only way we ever would open it”. Perhaps surprisingly, they both note that they’ve had very few difficulties finding ethical sources for their products. Even avoiding ‘accidentally vegan’ items made by bigger suppliers, they’ve had few issues making connections with small scale, independent producers. Some things are simple: using only organic essential oils and glass jars rather than plastic, for instance. Others can be slightly more difficult – common ingredient glycerine, for example, can be sourced from plants or animals, and manufacturers and sellers don’t have to clarify where theirs comes from. Many, meanwhile, are just absurd. Some products, they’ve noted, use emu oil – literally oil made from emus. PJ’s reaction to this pretty much sums it up: “Who even farms emus?!” Both are also keen to stress that their sustainable, vegan approach has benefited their barbers, and Luke is happy to point out that refusing to stock non-vegan products makes
TEMPO MEDIA
TEMPO MEDIA
dealing with reps ‘a bit easier’. The barbershop has benefited from the approach to use vegan products however, this was something discussed between both PJ and Luke to ensure their business remained ethical. “Using these products for us was the only option, it’s hard to source a good vegan
styling product.’” “For us, when we use the vegan products, its natural and we know exactly what’s in the products and who made what, which means we know they are the right products for the clients,” PJ says.

BARBERSHOP OF THE MONTH
MONOBROW DESIGN
ROOTED EXETER
Finally, as PJ puts it, using independently manufactured products made with care has benefits beyond the ethics of their business. Many people, he says, praise Roots’ approach not because their products are vegan, but because they’re “freaking awesome!” Roots focuses on ‘positivity, inclusivity, and compassion’. The shop, PJ and Luke stress, is open to everyone, and the owners go to a lot of effort to reach out and include people. This includes busting the childish and wrong ‘angry vegan’ stereotype. People in Exeter are more likely to ask curious questions than to be unfriendly, and PJ and Luke simply don’t engage with what little hostility comes their way online. They’re also warmly amused at the politeness of some customers. Luke laughs as he remembers one client surreptitiously sneaking a sausage roll outside the shop. “What are you doing!”, he remembers saying, “Just come in!” In fact, “just come in!” pretty much sums up Roots’ attitude to everything. The shop has already been featured in local media and has collaborated productively with the local art and music scene. (It helps that both PJ and Luke have a lot of experience in independent music, with Luke even working as a full-time DJ for a few years.)
16 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Happily, all this seems to be paying off for The Roots Foundation. They hired their first new full-time employee in November 2018, and both PJ and Luke stress how impressed they are with Jake Hobbs’s work. When asked about what might be next for Roots, they’re tantalisingly coy. “We can’t say much right now”, PJ teases, “but watch this space”. Considering how rewarding these two men find their work, and how well people seem to respond, we absolutely will be watching this space. Not least because Roots shows how easy it
can be to find great, ethical products and get them out to the public. Other barbershops could do a lot worse than link up with this exciting new movement. You can contact the Roots Foundation here: info@therootsfoundation.co.uk Call 01392 920839
BARBER CONNECT REVIEW
Barber connect product Round up Editors first Exhibition!
A
s the new Editor it was my first exhibition with The Barber Magazine and what can I say, I was impressed! The weekend gave me many opportunities to meet new faces within the industry and to learn a great deal. Whilst walking around the event it was fascinating to see the different styles portrayed by each barber and the different techniques used to accomplish each style on different stands. It was amazing how much talent was displayed during the event. It wasn’t just my first time at Barber Connect, numerous young companies attended the event.
The Natural Barber Co. Launched their plastic free and vegan/ vegetarian products only three months ago. “Barber Connect was a great success for The Natural Barber Co. It was great to connect with so many upcoming and established barbers and professionals looking for high performance, plastic free and vegan/ vegetarian alternatives for their styling products. We only launched 3 months ago but the feedback on our products has been excellent, and sales far exceeded our expectations for the two days. We will definitely be back next year.” Says Joe Mallory- Skinner, Founder of The Natural Barber Co. I saw many of the attendees of the event gathered around his stand eager to see the ocean safe styling products and hear his fascinating story. The event was a great way for Joe to see the industry as a whole and to understand the company’s competition. Zeus is the King of Pomades. greasy finish. Zeus has a nourishing and mouldable formula with medium hold and all-day rework-ability. It washes out easily too. Fully natural, vegetarian, left naturally fragranced, plastic free and made in the UK. Hades is a Matte Styling Paste like no other. Use for natural no-product matte looks. Hades has a nourishing and mouldable formula which adds light hold and thickness to your hair, without weighing it down or drying it out. Fully natural, vegan, left naturally fragranced, plastic free and made in the UK.
Barber Blades “Barber Connect 2019 was one of our most successful years yet! We were so happy to be joined by the biggest brands in the industry; some exhibiting for the first time, some who have been with us since day one! The education on offer this year was second to none. We had educators from Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, U.S.A to name just a few places, Barber Connect really is a place for barbers to network and meet their peers from all

Graham Hill Graham Hill is named after the thrilling two-time formula One World Champion. He was best known for winning the Indianapolis 500 as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Graham Hill product line hope to pay tribute to a ‘true gentleman.’ The German brand decided to launch their products to the UK during the exciting weekend Barber Connect. “Our exclusive distribution partner Barber Blades and we couldn’t have chosen for a better timing of our official GRAHAM HILL launch in UK. Be it the overwhelming feedback from conversations with potential customers or the recognition from our co-exhibitors, I think one thing is clear: Barber Connect was a huge help to put GRAHAM HILL on the UK map when it comes to exclusive male grooming products at reasonable prices. It is now up to Barber Blades and us to follow up on all our conversations quickly and to take next steps with our future partners.”
Dean Currie, Hard Grind “Barber Connect is always a pleasure. The event brings the best of the industry together under one roof! It’s wonderful to see so many different types of people coming together every year to celebrate barbering. There’s always something interesting going on too, whether you’re new to barbering or an experienced scissor spinner. Cutting and working with The Bluebeards Revenge, along with the other sponsors, is always a dream and they never ever fail to surprise me.”
Colin Petrie, Hard Grind “It’s always good to get down to Barber Connect. For me it’s a great event to meet and network with people, especially as most shows are so far from Scotland. This makes it hard to meet people face to face sometimes. Doing cuts and demos on stands we’re associated with and doing our stage work is a great chance for people attending to see us in action and see our relationship with our linked brands

first-hand. Plus, it gets us inspired and pumped to get cutting when we get back in the shop! It’s always so humbling to meet so many new faces and be shown such love and support for our brand and we are always so blown away each year.”
Matt Pedlar, Mr Barber “Barber Connect 2019 was my first experience of cutting on a stand, and what an epic experience it was! I had the pleasure of cutting on The Bluebeards Revenge stand – using some of their amazing products and equipment – and I’m very thankful to their team for that. The seminars this year were amazing too, featuring some of the best barbers from around the world: Leah Hayden Cassidy, Jarred Liddington and Matty Conrad to name just a few! The turn out this year was great as always and the audience participation was incredible. It’s always good to see barbers getting involved and learning new skills.”

The rotatable 360° cable coupling prevents the 3.5 metre cable from getting tangled during use. This not only eliminates annoying unravelling– working with it is almost as free and smooth as with a cordless device, but without any forced stops for charging nor any loss in performance. Y
uushuu (meaning “Excellence” in Japanese) is pleased to announce the launch of its new ‘PRECISION’ range of professional scissors and thinners. The products have been specifically developed by The AVEC Corporation for today’s barber and are designed to help you master your craft and deliver the perfect end result to clients. Yuushuu ‘PRECISION’ is a high-quality range of professional scissors and thinners that are available in sizes up to 7.0 inch. The scissors and thinners are manufactured using only the finest, high-quality 440C Japanese stainless steel. Every pair of scissors and thinners are hand-made with a convex blade and round tip to give a clean, razor sharp cut on both wet and dry hair.
26 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
All Yuushuu scissors have an in-built silencer providing noise free cutting and a forged finger rest with an ergonomic handle to deliver a comfortable hold and help minimise fatigue. Tension of the blades can be altered via the flat screw system using the included screw tool, which adjusts and creates stable tension and a smooth feel. Add texture and remove bulk from the hair with Yuushuu ‘PRECISION’ thinners. Featuring a straight, sharp blade, each pair of thinners has 30 teeth for a smooth feel that doesn’t pull or catch the hair. Thinners are available in two sizes – 6 inch and 6.5 inch. The new Yuushuu ‘PRECISION’ range has been specially designed to appeal to barbers. The ‘PRECISION’ range has a sleek black titanium coating which,
as well as looking stylish and attractive, enhances durability and helps prevent rusting from contact with styling products or professional disinfectant solution. Every scissor is housed in a stylish ‘oriental’ (traditional Kimono pattern) box with a hidden magnetic closure for storing and keeping your scissors safe. Scissor oil is included in every pack and is a must have accessory to help you care for your Yuushuu purchase. The Yuushuu ‘PRECISION’ range is available this summer and can be purchased from selected professional hair and beauty wholesalers across the UK and Republic of Ireland, including most branches of Capital Hair & Beauty and Aston & Fincher.
HEALTH CARE
Trichologist Top Tips Giovanni De Lellis (MIT) is a trichologist with over 12 years of clinical experience dealing with hair loss and scalp disorders at his private trichology clinic in Ipswich.
G
iovanni initially trained as a barber and began working at his family’s longestablished business Francesco Hair Salon from a young age and now splits his time between the two professions. Francesco Hair Salon has been running for over 22 years. It was founded by the Salon Director Franco De Lellis, who has been in the hairdressing business for over 40 years in Ipswich. Giovanni De Lellis (MIT) is the only fully qualified and insured trichologist in Suffolk, registered with The Institute of Trichologist. I asked Giovanni to give me his top five tips, to ensure barbers understand their clients’ needs
2. SUGGEST REGULAR TRIMS Not only is it good for business but it’s the best way to get rid of damaged hair such as split ends. A clean cut
Excess heat will ultimately damage hair. While it is essential for you to achieve certain hairstyles, I always suggest using the hairdryer on a medium heat setting to prevent heat damage. When shampooing your client’s hair again make sure the water isn’t too hot as this can strip the hair of essential oils.
5. WORK CLEAN
1. GO EASY ON THE PRODUCTS
28 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
When cutting or styling make sure you work with your client’s natural hair growth patterns. For example, suggest your client parts their hair on the same side as the crown, as they will require less heat and product to maintain it not only making life easier but also decreasing the chances of hair damage!
4. GO EASY ON THE HEAT
5 TIPS FOR BARBERS & THEIR CLIENTS
Using too much product can make your clients hair look heavy and unnatural, so use the minimum amount required to get that finished look. This is particularly important for clients with fine hair or greasy scalps. Educate your client on the correct amount to use.
3. WORK WITH YOUR CLIENTS HAIR PATTERNS
will prevent damage from spreading further up along the hair shaft, leaving the hair looking fuller especially for those clients with finer hair types.
Maintaining a high standard of hygiene is essential to minimise the risk of cross-infection. Bacteria, viruses and fungi can easily cause nasty infections of the skin or scalp such as folliculitis. Wash your hands regularly and keep your tools clean and sterilised.

Work under cover! Specialist insurance is a smart choice for barbers…
I
n the barbering business, you’re only as good as your last cut. Which means creative flair, an eye for the latest trends and an absolute obsession for detail are all essentials if you want to maintain your standing with the sharpest customers. Exactly the same qualities that BRIDGE Insurance Brokers called on when designing BarberGuard; as the name suggests, insurance cover specially designed for barbers. They realised that many of you aren’t adequately insured and that standard policies often don’t cover the unique risks that come with the job. Things like waving a cut-throat razor around millimetres from a customer’s neck. What could possibly go wrong? So, they decided to create an insurance product that came with all the cover you need, in one neat package. Then, they made sure they found out the trends of the trade, such as the kit being used, the latest techniques and tricks, and where and when barbers
30 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
carry out their cuts. After that, they applied their attention to detail and made sure the cover was exactly what the modern barber-abouttown needed for peace of mind. They have been insurance brokers for nearly 50 years, after all. Finally, they combed the UK for the most competitive price from their comprehensive roster of highlyspecialised commercial insurers, who don’t deal direct, so you can cover the lot, for a lot less than you think. So, what essential tools does BarberGuard add to your equipment box? First off, Public Liability that provides £5million cover for your business if a member of the public gets hurt; or if their property is damaged in the course of you carrying out your business activities (where it’s proved you’ve been negligent). BarberGuard even includes cover from day one for cut throat shaving, giving keen newly-qualified barbers the opportunity to put their training into action from their
very first day. Next, Employers’ Liability. Not just sensible, but also a legal obligation should you have any employees, covering any injuries they incur during the course of their employment where it’s proved you’re at fault. Then, stock cover. Choose the amount you want to cover and BarberGuard will protect you against any loss so you can to restock fast in the event of a claim. Finally, Business Interruption that covers the loss of income from being unable to work because of events like fire, flood and storm. Whether you’re a busy barber shop, a freelance barber renting a chair, or on the road carrying out home visits, BarberGuard contains some very special product features to cope with the unique demands of your trade. Please call Dean Stevens on 0161 234 9405 to find out how specialist BarberGuard insurance could help you cut the worries while you’re cutting hair.

CHARITY ISSUE
Sugar Beards charity bands Sugar Beard decide to donate 1000 of their custom-made bands to charity via their website for £1 each, hoping to raise £1000 for the Southmead Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
T
he (NICU) provides intensive care, high dependency care, special care and transitional care for hundreds of children each year. As well as caring for children who are born too soon or with health conditions in their first weeks of life, the team of staff support parents through what can be a very difficult journey. CEO’s Rory Woods and Tom Prentice of Sugar Beard explain more about the company’s ethos and why they developed the bands.
The story of SugarBeard Sugar Beard started in an unlikely way with a very random series of events. Tom explains: “Both myself and Rory are part of the biggest beard Club in the world; ‘Bearded Villains’. We are in different chapters; Rory is part of ‘Southwest Kingsman’ and I am the lieutenant of Bearded Villains Welsh Chapter. Early in 2018 the southwest were having a meet in Exeter and although we had not met at this point, the Brotherhood is very tightknit, as such Rory offered me a bed in his room for the night as my attendance was very much a last-minute call.” ‘We are a brotherhood of elite bearded men from all over the world.’ The Bearded Villains were created in hope to ‘Unite bearded men of all cultures, races, creed and sexuality in a Brotherhood devoted to Loyalty, Honour and Respect toward all people, dedicated to the betterment of mankind through fraternity Charity and Kindness ‘. Tom adds: “A big part of being a Bearded villain is doing charity work, so when we became established as Sugar Beard, we wanted this to be part of our company ethos too.”
32 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Creating the Beard Balm Sugar Beard began its journey at that Exeter meet as Rory commented on how nice Toms Beard balm smelled and was keen to buy some. Tom fancies himself as a bit of an ‘engineer’ and decided to make his own balm because, he could never find a balm with a scent that ‘stuck’. “After some trial and error in the kitchen, I felt I had the perfect formula and simply made my own batches. After explaining this to Rory, he was keen that I not only made him some, but that we started making it for the general public. He explained that he had also struggled to find a balm that did what was needed until now and was certain that most bearded men struggled with this issue.” The name ‘Sugar Beard’ was formed due to Tom and Rory staying clear of the ‘traditional’ scents on the market and produced a more sweet and fruity scent, which therefore lead to ‘Sugar Beard’. Sugar Beard has now passed its first 12 months as an established company and contender in the competitive market.
Where the money goes In their first year of trading, Sugar Beard was approached by numerous charities, both inside and external to Bearded Villains, of which Sugar Beard supported with raffle prizes and
publicity. This year Sugar Beard decided to form a tailored plan and support a charity that was close to them. “Rory’s son Brodey was born with a tiny hole in one of his lungs, as such spent time in south mead hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. We decided this year to donate 1000 charity bands from our product model that are available direct on our website www.sugarbeard.co.uk to be sold to raise £1000 to donate to the neonatal unit (we coined the hashtag; #bands4babies)” explains Tom. They aim to hit this goal by the end of the year, with the development of their product line they hope this will be an easy target to reach. “We have our female range launching either late in 2019 or early 2020 all of which we offer a wholesale model for barbers, salons and tattoo studios alike. We are very grateful to our growing customer base; they are the reason we have the scope to raise money and awareness for worthy causes and long may that continue. To close off with our strapline; to all the bearded gents who read this; ‘Before you stroke it, sugar-coat it’ www.sugarbeard.co.uk

RISING STAR
An ongoing passion Charlie Hester is a qualified Barber who works at the Waterman & Webb Barbers in Whitstable When did you know you wanted this as a career? I was in 6th form studying my A-levels when I decided barbering was the career I wanted to go down, for as long as I can remember I’ve been interested and passionate about lads’ haircuts and styles. Including spending time and money on my own. I’ve always been good with people and enjoy social interactions with variations of people.
What was your first job in the industry, and where did you train? I first started as a hairdressing apprentice in Canterbury, I enjoyed the craft and saw it as a great opportunity to broaden my options for the future, however, was always leaning towards the barbering side of things as my passion was for men’s styles. I left and payed for an intensive course at ‘hair for men academy’ in Shoreditch London. Immediately reinforcing my love and interest for barbering, I knew I’d made the right decision. After my course I worked for myself in Canterbury for a year doing mobile cuts and having people over to my house. I liked this because people could play Xbox while waiting and have refreshments. This is when I found out about Waterman & Webb, who bring old school and modern barbering together. Wicked, chilled environment with a barbershop buzz that I lacked before.
What is your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is connecting with my clients and getting to know a variety of different people. I love the smile I receive when I’ve made someone’s day, its genuine. A good haircut can boost someone’s confidence massively. I like listening to
40 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK
the stories of my older clients who have seen a lot and chatting to the young lads about what they’re plans hold for the future.
Any advice to anyone thinking of barbering as a career? My advice for anyone who wants to become a barber is to love their craft, it shows more than you think to others in the shop. When you’re passionate and have a good mindset for continual learning you can go a long way. Also, patience is a must, you’ll always come across difficult clients, learning to develop key people skills such a character judgment is important, then
you can start a conversation that isn’t forced and can draw someone out of their shell. For example, football convos are popular but not everyone likes the same thing. People underestimate the power of real conversations other than small talk, this is essential for a client’s ‘over all experience’.
Plans for the future? I plan to enhance my skills as best I can, knowing that I can always do better, and barbering fashion is always evolving. There is always something to learn.
